BOA Committees

The BOA operates and develops its strategy through a number of committees, each with their own distinct specific remit. Executive Group 

The Executive Group's primary purpose is to develop strategy, manage financial and other risks, and oversee internal controls on behalf of Council – including verification that our insurance cover is sufficient for physical assets, employer and public liability. It carries out a rolling critical assessment of the structure and functions of the BOA, both internally and externally; monitors membership attitudes closely; and exercises in year budgetary control focused on delivery of our core objectives.

Medicolegal Committee

The aim of the Committee is to focus on the BOA role in providing medicolegal assistance in all aspects of trauma and orthopaedic practice. Its role is to maintain an oversight of legal matters in relation to the safe practice of orthopaedic and trauma surgery the preparation of reports for the Courts.

The medicolegal committee also has a responsibility to inform members of the Association of the changes in law relating to the practice of trauma and orthopaedic surgery, report writing and giving evidence.  

It co-ordinates the position of the BOA in response to Government and legal profession changes in policy in relation to medicolegal expert and professional witness practice. The Medicolegal Committee also gives advice to external agencies regarding appropriate expertise to deal with medicolegal questions, both nationally and internationally.

Professional Practice Committee 

Developing and sustaining excellence in professional practice is a core objective of the BOA’s overall strategy. The PPC is charged by the BOA Council with maintaining a clear focus on all aspects of professional practice, including essential linkages with the BOA’s other core objectives related to training, education and research

Patient Liaison Group 

The PLG was formed in 2004 and comprises orthopaedic surgeons and lay membersThe Council of the British Orthopaedic Association considered it valuable to have the advice and input from patients when the BOA is planning orthopaedic care, guidelines and responding to changes in healthcare systems, including training and education. Therefore in March 2004 a Patient Liaison Group was formed, comprising orthopaedic surgeons and lay members. Following open advertisement in national newspapers, lay members were appointed to the Patient Liaison Group, together with three orthopaedic surgeons. The group meets at regular intervals with a Lay Chairman, who now attends Council meetings as an ex officio member

Trauma Group

The Trauma Group is responsible for covering all aspects of trauma care within the BOA's remit.  These include:  

  • Developing the BOA professional guidance on Major Trauma Centres

  • Producing BOA Standards for Trauma (BOAST) guidelines

  • Contributing to the trauma component of the emergent BOA research strategy

  • Developing policies and standards of care for fragility fractures

  • Co-ordination of unit reviews triggered by National Hip Fracture Database reports

Research Committee

The Research Committee owns and drives forward the Association’s Research Strategy and constructs, reviews and prioritises the BOA Research Agenda, copies of which can be found on the Joint Action website as it is the primary driver for our 'pump-priming' research grants.
