Programme
The Training Orthopaedic Trainers programme has been established to improve the standard of teaching for those in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) training and practice. The underlying premise is that if T&O trainers understand how people learn and how the T&O curriculum works, by translating that understanding into action, they should improve their teaching.
An established T&O surgical trainer and our educational advisor, Lisa Hadfield-Law, facilitate each course. Over the last 15 years, Lisa has trained over 4000 T&O surgeons to teach, from 57 countries within Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia Pacific.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Identify personal learning needs
• Focus on relevant issues arising from the T&O curriculum
• Outline principles of learning including feedback
• Apply these principles to strategies for improving their own teaching
• Formulate basic learning outcomes
• Identify appropriate opportunities for small group teaching
• Discuss techniques for facilitating the group process
• Outline the purpose of lecturing
• Plan and structure a teaching session.
• Propose strategies for lecturing
• Discuss how to optimize opportunistic teaching and learning in:
Operating theatre
Bedside
Outpatients and the Emergency Department
Simulated situations
• Evaluate the use of reflective practice.
• Demonstrate a four stage approach to the teaching of skills.
• Evaluate the application of this framework to operative training.
• Describe the role of assessment in T&O training
• Formulate principles of effective assessment
• Evaluate methods of assessing competence in knowledge, skills, judgement and professionalism
• Consider how to manage challenges in their own teaching practice
• Develop an action plan for change in practice.
Assessment
There will be 10 participants on each course and although TOTs is not formally assessed, we offer peer and educator led feedback. ISCP Workplace Based Assessments can be completed incorporating this feedback.

Course Fees
We have made every attempt to keep the course fee to the minimum and will hold the programme at the BOA. The course fee is £400 for BOA members for the two days (£700 for non members). This covers lunch and refreshments on both days.
