The BOA is the professional association for orthopaedic surgeons in the United Kingdom and those abroad who either have had orthopaedic training in the United Kingdom or maintained an interest in the affairs of the Association. The objectives are the advancement for the public benefit of the Art, Science and Practice of orthopaedic surgery with the aim of bringing relief to patients of all ages suffering from the effects of injury or disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
- In furtherance of these objectives the Association organises annual CPD-accredited scientific congresses to:
- provide a forum for debate by presentation of papers on new techniques and orthopaedic research
- attract eminent speakers to offer “state of the art” lectures
- foster fellowship and encourage social interaction between members
- Members are offered preferential registration rates
- Organises Instructional Courses for members at all levels.
- Organises Instructional Courses and examinations for non-orthopaedic surgeons:
- Plaster Room Technicians (BOA/RCN(SON)/AOT Certificate in Casting Techniques)
- Orthopaedic Clinical Assistants, Theatre Personnel, etc (Certificate of Orthopaedic Medical Technology - COMT)
- Employees of orthopaedic healthcare industries (COMT)
- Includes a discounted subscription to the official organ of orthopaedic surgery, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. This world leading orthopaedic journals package consists of both British and American volumes, 12 issues of each journal and 6-7 free supplements a year PLUS free online access with additional features.
- Provides free access to Association publications:
- An official annual handbook, giving details and contact numbers of all members; topographical breakdown of members; information on Council and Committees, Specialist Societies, representatives on allied bodies, Regional Advisers, Linkmen; Fellowships, Awards and Guest Lectures; Annual Report and Accounts.
- “Blue Books”: reports for members and others on issues of clinical, educational or general orthopaedic relevance
- A thrice-yearly newsletter British Orthopaedic News (BON) as a medium of information on BOA activities, matters of current orthopaedic concern and communication between members
- Information on orthopaedic courses and meetings, in Britain and worldwide
- Offers financial assistance to members in need through the Benevolent Fund
- Holds an Annual General Meeting and, when necessary, Business Meetings for the conduct of formal Association business. (Voting is restricted to Home Fellows)
- Establishes Committees to advance the aims of the Association and to respond to issues raised by members
- Provides financial support for orthopaedic research through the Joint Action appeal.
- Offers information, advice and assistance on Continuing Professional Development and assesses courses for CPD accreditation
- Carries out an annual census and maintains an extensive manpower database to support negotiations with the Department of Health on manpower levels

- Provides access to European orthopaedic surgery through membership of EFORT. Preferential rates for biennial EFORT Congresses.
- Offer access to the International Centre for Orthopaedic Education database on Fellowship opportunities worldwide

- The Royal Colleges of Surgery
- The Federation of Surgical Specialty Associations

The BOA has developed a musculoskeletal portal in association with the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD). The portal at www.bjdonline.org is financed entirely by the BJD and uses simple, up-to-date, and reliable technology. It is expected that more advanced technical features and specific sponsored projects of an international and collaborative nature with the other participating Societies and BJD itself will appear in the future. Income Tax A member assessable for income tax under Schedule E may claim relief in respect of the annual subscription to the Association, under Section 16 of the 1958 Finance Act. Form P358 may be obtained from the relevant tax office and should be returned completed quoting the reference C.I.SUB/254. Further Information Please refer to Strategy Statement document
