The BOA is the professional association for orthopaedic surgeons in the United Kingdom and those abroad who have had orthopaedic training in the UK.

Its objectives are the advancement for the public benefit of the Art, Science and Practice of Orthopaedic Surgery with the aim of bringing relief to patients of all ages suffering from the effects of injury or disorders of the musculo-skeletal system.

In furtherance of these objectives, the BOA

• organises annual CME-accredited scientific conferences
• organises Instructional Courses for members at all levels
• organises Instructional Courses and Examinations for non-orthopaedic surgeons
• promotes the official organ of orthopaedic surgery, the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, by its inclusion as an entitlement of membership
• provides free access to Association publications (BOA Handbook; "Blue Books" for members and others on issues of clinical, educational, or general orthopaedic relevance; a biannual newsletter "British Orthopaedic News"; information on orthopaedic courses and meetings worldwide)
• and more (see "Benefits of Membership" below)

Please Note: with the introduction of run-through training, the Membership Criteria are in the process of change, particularly as they relate to the Home Associate grade. We hope to have revised the downloadable documents and the online membership registration system on this page as soon as the new training arrangements have been clarified in detail. Meanwhile, applications from trainees in orthopaedic surgery at ST1 level and above will be considered.
