New Government Coalition agreement - Health

David Cameron and Nick Clegg yesterday published the full details of the coalition agreement between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. This agreement includes specific sections on the NHS, public health and social care and disability.

For ease of reference we have included the sections relating to health below. The pledges set out within the document include giving greater power to GPs, stopping top-down reorganisations of the NHS, and ensuring a stronger patient voice through locally elected PCT boards. It also sets out an increasing role for the CQC and Monitor.

It is likely that Andrew Lansley will make reference to more details in his expected announcement later today, Friday 21 May.

MHRA has appointed Mr Timothy Wilton to the Committee on the Safety of Devices

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Appointments Commission have announced the appointment of two new members to the Committee on the Safety of Devices (CSD).

Mr Timothy Wilton has been appointed as an expert member of orthopaedics and is currently a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.

He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Association of Surgery of the Knee, the British Hip Society as well as the European and International Knee Societies.

The MHRA has also appointed Mr Adrian Harris as an expert member of accident and emergency medicine.

BOA President Mike Bell responds to GMC's consultation on Revalidation

Mike Bell has responded on behalf of the BOA to the General Medical Councils consultation on Revalidation.

Attached below are both the completed consultation response form and Mike Bell's letter to Professor Rubin expressing the BOA's support of revalidation along with some concerns with the proposed Revalidation process.

The consultation, titled ‘Revalidation: the way ahead’ began on the 1 March and will end on Friday 4 June.
