As an orthopaedic profession whose practitioners work in multidisciplinary teams it is important that we and our Specialist Societies sustain strong partnerships with other clinicians involved in the treatment of musculoskeletal (MSK) trauma and longer term conditions.
These include most of the other surgical specialty associations, with whom we interact via the Federation of Surgical Specialty Associations, in particular plastic and neurosurgeons for hands and spines respectively. In addition, we have specific relationships with:
The British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) – with whom we have a memorandum of understanding that sets out clearly our joint intent.
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) – with whom we have a strong relationship. With the advent of Clinical Commissioning Groups it will be important for the BOA, the BSR and the CSP to work closely together in order to create and harness MSK networks. The objective of these networks is to ensure consistency of commissioned services that are in patients’ best interests.
Arthritis & Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) – of who we are an active member. ARMA are the umbrella body for the arthritis and musculoskeletal community in the UK and we work with them on various campaigns and policy areas.
The Arthroplasty Care Practitioners Association (ACPA) – with whom we have a formal affiliation. We have also collaborated in the production of national transferrable role specifications for ACPA members.
