BOA 2021 Election - nominations now open
Nominations are now open for the BOA 2021 Election. We believe that Trauma and Orthopaedics should be an inclusive surgical profession that inspires, attracts and retains the best talent from a wide variety of backgrounds. One of the ways we can make that a reality is by ensuring we elect a Council that fully represents all our members and better reflects the population we serve.
You have the opportunity to bring your skills and expertise to help us grow and develop the BOA and Trauma and Orthopaedics as a whole. A more diverse BOA, and a broader range of voices, better serves our patients and best supports our colleagues and we welcome all applications.
This year there are vacancies for the four trustees and the President.
The trustee positions are for a three year term with active participation in Council and other BOA activities. These are busy but rewarding roles. They include attending five Council meetings per annum, as well as meetings usually for at least one Committee or Working Party, and other occasional ad hoc meetings and events.
At present all meetings are virtual but in future there is expected to be a mixture of virtual and face-to-face, with most meetings in London but occasionally held in Birmingham or elsewhere. Active participation requires reading of meeting papers ahead of attendance, and taking on follow-up actions and tasks in between meetings. We expect that Council members will attend Congress as much as possible, and will be involved in aspects such as judging of posters and other supportive activities but there is also time to network and build connections with specialist societies and other stakeholders.
Each year, the four incoming elected members of Council are given specific responsibilities, either as a member of one of our Committees and/or representing the BOA with an external organisation or forum. These are important components of the Council roles. This year for the first time we are publicising the responsibilities that we will be looking to fill, to help inform potential applicants:
- One person to be member of Medico-legal Committee and BOA liaison with CORESS
- One joint position on both Orthopaedic Committee and Trauma Committee and providing liaison between the two.
- One person on Orthopaedic Committee
- One UEMS rep (https://www.uems.eu/ome)
Once the election takes place, the four successful candidates will be allocated to these roles as best suits their combined skills and experience. It isn’t always possible for everyone to be appointed to their preferred role.
Applicants must be a current Home Fellow.
The role of President is a significant undertaking and requires a four year commitment. The successful candidate will hold the roles of Vice-President Elect, Vice-President, President and Immediate Past President and for the period April 2022-September 2023 will take up the position of Editor of the JTO.
Applicants must be a current Home Fellow and should hold or have previously held an elected position on the BOA Council.
How to Apply
If you are eligible to apply and would like to be considered for one of the roles above, we would love to hear from you. The BOA is fully committed to equality of opportunity and we particularly welcome applications which will increase the diversity of Council.
