Session Title: Busting the Myths of Day Case Arthroplasty
Session Description: This session is presented by the BADS Specialist Society and intends to provide some insight and useful information for Day Case Arthroplasty Pathways within a District General Hospital, outside the setting of a formalised Day Case stand-alone Unit. It will consist of presentations from orthopaedics, anaesthetics, senior nurses and orthopaedic trainees with up-to-date experience on delivering appropriate pathways including set up. In addition, there will be significant opportunity to ask direct questions to panel members from the BOA and BADS as well as Allied Health Care Professionals.

Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with subspecialty interest in Hand Surgery and Military Surgery. Qualified from Glasgow University. Joined the Royal Navy in 1987, undertook Surgical Training, obtaining a DM during this period. Fellowship training in Hand Surgery in Wrightington, and Trauma in Toronto, Canada. Accrediting in 2004, before undertaking 6 tours to Iraq and Afghanistan Conflicts. Has used Day Surgery throughout consultant career, and since COVID has assisted in developing pathways for acute trauma to be managed via day surgery. Has a significant interest in training, holding multiple training positions and has supported several trainees through higher degrees. Retired from the MOD in 2021. Currently a visiting Clinical Professor to Loughborough University. Continues to work in the NHS as a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, sitting on BOA Council as BADS representative
Having qualified as a Doctor in 1993 I have over 28 years of Orthopaedic experience.
I trained in at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where I was the Senior Surgical Officer and awarded the Seddon Society Medal for research. There I trained with some of the leading hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK. My fellowship year was spent in London training in minimally invasive techniques and rapid rehabilitation.
In 2008, in Fife, we set up one of Scotland's first Enhanced Recovery Programmes. Since then we have visited several national and international centers, learning new techniques of enhanced recovery including Day Case Arthroplasty Programs. This learning culminated, in August 2018, when we performed the first Day Case Hip Replacement in Scotland. The day case arthroplasty programme has gone from strength to strength and now 25% of all my Total Hip Replacements are successful Day Case discharges. The median LoS for all of my patients is one day and the average LoS <1.5 days.

From 2016 to 2020 I was Chair of the Scottish Committee of Orthopaedics and Trauma and sat on the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association.
Since 2017 I have been the Clinical Lead for Major Trauma in South East Scotland.
Since 2019 I have sat on the council of the British Association of Day Surgery.
Since 2020 I have been Orthopaedic Specialty Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer.
Since 2025 I have been Orthopaedic Specialty Advisor to the Centre for Sustainable Delivery.
Dr Claire Blandford has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Torbay Hospital since 2013 having graduated from St Georges Hospital Medical School and then completed her anaesthetic training in the South West. Her specialist interests are Regional anaesthesia, Day Surgery and Medical Education. She has been leading on improving quality and reducing length of stay in orthopaedic surgery in her trust since 2018, developing innovative new pathways including being the pathway development advisor and authoring the original care pathways for the much respected South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre (SWAOC). More recently she has been the lead author of the 2023 GIRFT Guidelines for Hip & Knee Arthroplasty Surgery which promotes a 0-1 night length of stay as the standard of care for elective hip & knee arthroplasty. She is also the RCOA college tutor for her department as well as the author of several educational texts.
Oliver Adebayo is currently a senior Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist Registrar on the North-East London (RNOH) rotation. He graduated from Kings College London and undertook his foundation training in the South Thames Foundation School region. He was a London School of Surgery Core Surgical Trainee prior to commencing his speciality training in T&O. He has a specialist interest in knee surgery, sports injuries and limb reconstruction.
He is the former President of British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and a founding member of GASOC, the Global Anaesthetic, Surgical and Obstetric Collaboration. In 2023, he became a FMLM National Medical Director Clinical Fellow working at NHS England on Day Case Arthroplasty pathways looking at both clinical outcomes and patient experience as well as being the GIRFT Litigation Fellow working on improving consent practices across the NHS.
Oliver has been passionate about quality improvement and digital transformation throughout his medical career working with companies like Apple and Interneuron on digital platforms. During his Core Surgical Training, he undertook an MSc in Surgical Innovation from Imperial College London which helped to shape his knowledge and values with regards to improving surgical processes and education with technology and is currently a Bitelabs Digital Health, AI and Innovation Fellow.
