Laura Deriu

Children’s Orthopaedic Consultant, Leeds Children’s Hospital

Miss Laura Deriu has been a Children’s Orthopaedic Consultant at Leeds Children’s Hospital since 2015.

She did her higher surgical training in Rome (Italy) and underwent fellowship training in the United States and United Kingdom. She enjoys the generality of paediatric orthopaedics, but has a particular interest in trauma, hip conditions and foot deformities.

Miss Deriu is a keen trainer and is highly involved at regional and national level. She was awarded the BOTA TOTY in 2020-2021.

She is the Chair of the Education Committee of the British Society of Children’s Orthopaedics Surgery and is highly involved in organising and coordinating local and national educational events.

She loves travelling, reading, dancing, cooking and looking after her friends and family.

Emily Baird

Consultant in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgery, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.

She is the Chair of the Education Committee of The British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Faculty Member for Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons and Tutor for the MSc in Patient Safety and Human Factors.

She lives in Edinburgh with her husband and two young boys, and likes to dance and run!

Professor Daniel Perry

NIHR Research Professor, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Dan is Professor of Children's Orthopaedic Surgeon at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and a NIHR Research Professor.

Dan specialises in Children’s Hip Disease and Trauma. He trained in Liverpool and Warwick, before completing a fellowship at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He was the first orthopaedic surgeon to have been awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship.

Dan’s major research interests are in epidemiology and effectiveness research. He has an international portfolio of clinical trials. He has over >£30m (USD $40 million) in research income, including as Chief Investigator on the NIHR British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance (BOSS) Study (Paediatric Hip Disease), NIHR FORCE Study (Simple Wrist Fractures), NIHR SCIENCE Study (Medial Epicondyle Fractures), NIHR CRAFFT Study (Severe Wrist Fractures), NIHR BigBOSS Study (Hip Disease), NIHR BASIS Study (Scoliosis) and the NIHR Odd SOCKS Study (Ankle Fractures). He is currently working Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago (USA) to reproduce UK studies throughout North America, with an NIH R01 grant recently awarded.

Dan supervises several PhD students, and oversees a broad team within the clinical trials unit of biostatisticians, health economists, trial managers and data specialists.

He is a member of the NIHR HTA Commissioning Board and Associate Editor of The Bone & Joint Journal. He also sits on the research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the research committee of BSCOS (British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery).

Anna Clarke

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Anna Clarke is a paediatric orthopaedic consultant in Bristol. She is a keen educator and co-chair of the AO paediatric trauma course. 
She is also the clinical lead for the Bristol paediatric MTC, one of only 5 standalone paediatric centres in the UK. 
Her special interests include all aspects of trauma but particularly upper limb. She has developed a niche practice in managing complex elbows in children which has taught her much about the difficulties in managing the rarer injuries and their consequences. 
Her elective practice is wide ranging but with a focus on cerebral palsy and upper limb conditions.

Anouska Ayub

Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health

Anouska is a Paediatric T&O Consultant at the Royal London Hospital.  She has a particular interest in education, with an MSc (MedEd) and is on the BSCOS Education Committee.

Steph Buchan

Steph is a Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant in Cardiff. She completed her registrar training in Wessex Deanery, then a fellowship in paediatric orthopaedics at Alder Hey Hospital. She has been on BSCOS Education Committee for 3 years and has an MSc in medical education.

Flossie Carpenter

Flossie Carpenter is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellow at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff. She has recently completed her academic surgical training in the Severn Deanery. Having finished her PhD using qualitative methodology, she has developed an interest in randomised controlled trials in Paediatric Orthopaedics.

Sara Gargent

Sara is a Consultant in Children’s Trauma & Orthopaedics at Broomfield Hospital. She completed two prestigious London fellowships at The Royal London Hospital and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Her specialist interests are trauma, clubfoot and neuromuscular conditions. She is a keen medical educator and has completed the BOA Future Leaders Programme.

Vittoria Bucknall

Miss Bucknall trained in Birmingham before further graduating from the University of Dundee with honours in Orthopaedic Sciences. Following this, Miss Bucknall joined the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Programme where she completed her higher surgical training.

 

Miss Bucknall went on to complete her fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Alder Hey where she joined the team as a consultant.

 

During training, Miss Bucknall received a number of national prizes for research and education and was awarded the Scottish national prize for best trainee.  Miss Bucknall has served as President to the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and has sat as council on the boards of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Intercollegiate Royal Colleges of Surgeons and the Joint Committee of Surgical Training. 

 

Miss Bucknall is avid about surgical education and delivers both international and national conferences and teaching as well as being a nationally invited guest speaker. As a member of the Selection Design Group, Miss Bucknall continues to organise national recruitment to orthopaedic training.
