Hiro Tanaka is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Newport, South Wales. He is passionate about improving the quality of surgical training and promoting clinical leadership in the NHS. He designed the BOFAS Principles Course on behalf of the Education Committee in 2010 and continues to be a member of the committee. He is Chairman of the Education and Revalidation Committee of the BOA and is an examiner for the FRCS (Orth).
Having spent 20 years in clinical practice and 20 years in surgical education, Lisa has been immersed in both cultures and is, therefore, in a unique position to provide educational support. She has managed an orthopaedic/trauma service of a teaching hospital, and has insight into the circumstances and challenges facing surgical teams.

Mike has been involved in leadership roles since graduating. He has seen examples of great leadership whilst a serving office in the British Army and as a trainee on the South East Thames orthopaedic rotation. Conversely he has dealt with failures of individual and corporate leadership as an invited College assessor, external SUI/RCA expert and a National Clinical Assessment Service supervisor. His own leadership journey has included roles as head of service, clinical lead of East Midlands Spinal Network, secretary UK Spine Societies Board and global chair of AOSpine Community Development and Education Commissions. He is currently a Specialist Advisor in spinal surgery for GIRFT.
He has been trained in coaching and mentorship skills.
Professor Xavier Griffin spearheads academic orthopaedics at QMUL and Barts Health, having joined in August 2020 as the inaugural chair of Bone & Joint Health. Xavier’s vision is for worldclass excellence in research and clinical academic training; providing opportunity for the next generation of clinician scientists to realise their aspirations.
Xavier has been awarded over £12m of research funding and over 100 peer reviewed publications. He is a recognised research leader in the management of hip fracture and is excited to have launched the WHiTE PLATFORM study with colleagues at University of Oxford. Xavier is Chief Investigator for a number of National Institute Health Research funded clinical trials, having led 9 in the last 5 years and supported a further 5.
Xavier is driven by having meaningful impact on patient care; his research is focused on the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing treatments to improve bone and joint health and has been cited by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. He has a passion for developing methodologies which harness the speed, power and efficiency of routinely-collected data but are coupled with the great advantages of randomisation.
Xavier’s clinical expertise is orthopaedic trauma surgery specialising in pelvic and acetabular fractures. He enjoys working as part of the team at the busiest orthopaedic trauma hospital in Europe – The Royal London. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1999 before attending medical school at the University of Oxford, Xavier trained in orthopaedic surgery as a National Institute of Health Research integrated clinical academic fellow. Xavier completed a world-renowned clinical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia specialising in complex fractures of the pelvis and hip. Prior to joining Bone & Joint Health Xavier was Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital major trauma centre.
Outside of work Xavier can be found mountain biking or rock climbing usually with his young sons in tow!
Deborah Eastwood is an Associate Professor of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, UCL. She works at Great Ormond St Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Deborah works in the generality of paediatric orthopaedic surgery but has a particular interest in children with overgrowth syndromes, metabolic bone diseases and those with neurological problems. She is also the surgeon for the GOSH Ponseti service.
Deborah is the Immediate Past President of the British Orthopaedic Association, a past president of EPOS (European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society) and a past board member of BSCOS (British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery and the Council of Management for the Bone and Joint Journal .
