Session description: This session will explore multidisciplinary strategies aimed at preventing musculoskeletal (MSK) diseases, minimising harm and promoting long-term health. The focus will be on early identification of risk factors, evidence-based interventions and public health approaches that integrate clinical practice with lifestyle modification and system-wide change.

Mark is a Consultant and Divisional Clinical Director MSK & surgical specialties at ESNEFT (Ipswich & Colchester Hospitals) since 2000. Mark’s specialist interests are in surgery of the knee and all levels of surgical education.
He was Chair of the SAC 2017-2020 leading the new curriculum changes, East of England Training Programme Director for 11 years, and is currently Head of School of Surgery. Following three years on BOA Council and one year on the Orthopaedic Committee he joined the Executive as Honorary Treasurer in 2020/21 and is now Vice President.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
Fergal Monsell graduated without distinction from the Welsh National School of Medicine. He completed higher surgical training at the University of Manchester and has been a Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol since 2004. He is involved in the management of paediatric patients with a special interest in limb deformity and trauma.
He has made a greater than average contribution to the canon of lower-level evidence and has been awarded degrees at Master and Doctorate level.
He has a longstanding interest in education, is Director of the Avon Centre for Musculoskeletal Education and Projector at the Grand Academy.

National Clinical Director, MSK
Dr Lesley Kay is a Consultant Rheumatologist in Newcastle upon Tyne, the joint National Clinical Lead for Rheumatology in the Getting It Right First Time Programme, Vice Chair of the Northern Clinical Senate Council and a trustee of the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society. She was previously acting Medical Director and deputy Medical Director at the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch, Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal Services and for Patient Safety and Quality in her trust, and Chair of the British Society for Rheumatology’s Clinical Affairs committee. She has master’s degrees in public health and in Leadership and Quality Improvement.

Associate Professor of Orthopaedics, Harvard Medical School
Dr. Tanaka is the Director of the Women’s Sports Medicine Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Her primary research focus is on the biomechanics, imaging and anatomy of the patellofemoral joint. She serves as head team physician for the New England Revolution MLS team, and as a team physician for the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Ballet. She additionally has interest in improving the understanding of treatment outcomes and injury prevention in female athletes. She serves on the Board of Directors for AOSSM, as Chair of Learning Innovation for AAOS, Associate Editor for AJSM, editorial board for the Arthroscopy Journal, Associate CME Editor Panel for JBJS, and has been the founder and Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Women’s Sports Medicine.
Tim Spalding is a knee surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic London and also in the Midlands near Coventry at Nuffield Health Warwick. His focus is on ligament reconstruction and knee preservation covering meniscal repair and meniscal transplantation, articular cartilage repair, osteotomy, and novel ortho-biologics. He is past president of the International ACL Study Group.
Following Fellowship in Toronto, consultant career started in the Royal Navy in 1995, pursuing specialisation in the sporting knee. In 2000 he moved to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, initiating meniscal transplantation and developing a well-respected fellowship and research program before leaving in 2021.
He has pioneered several new techniques, has over 120 publications and 12 book chapters. He leads the UK National Ligament Registry for ACL surgery, now transitioning into a mandatory national registry. Internationally, he co-leads the International Meniscal REconstruction Forum (IMREF) and the ICRS Cartilage Foundation. He is member-at-large on the ISAKOS Board and Associate Editor at the KSSTA Journal. Since 2003 he is co-organiser of the Sports Knee Surgery biannual conference, universally regarded as one of the top education conferences in UK due to the renowned international faculty.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust
Rhidian has been involved in infection management for over 30 years. After a long career in Cardiff establishing a Revision Knee Practice, he moved to Colchester in 2023 to lead the Major Revision Centre for Knees in the region. He is currently the inaugural BAJIS President.
