Fergal Monsell
BOA Session
The Howard Steel Lecture honours American orthopaedic surgeon and philanthropist Howard Steel, who believed that surgeons should take time to appreciate interests and perspectives beyond their professional lives. Reflecting this philosophy, his one stipulation was that the lecture bearing his name should focus on a non-orthopaedic subject.
The Howard Steel Foundation was established in 1981 by a group of grateful former patients and later began supporting annual lectureships for orthopaedic organisations in the USA and UK. The first Howard Steel Lecture at the BOA Annual Congress was delivered in 1998, and the lecture continues to offer delegates an opportunity to hear from distinguished speakers on subjects beyond the world of orthopaedics.

Fergal Monsell graduated without distinction from the Welsh National School of Medicine. He completed higher surgical training at the University of Manchester and has been a Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol since 2004. He is involved in the management of paediatric patients with a special interest in limb deformity and trauma.
He has made a greater than average contribution to the canon of lower-level evidence and has been awarded degrees at Master and Doctorate level.
He has a longstanding interest in education, is Director of the Avon Centre for Musculoskeletal Education and Projector at the Grand Academy.
He is also the current President of the BOA.
