Innovations in trauma are occurring rapidly with emphasis on multidisciplinary management. This session is designed to update surgeons of all grades with an interactive session on all fields of everyday trauma.

Sam Vollans
Consultant Shoulder/Elbow Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
|
Sam is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with a specialist practice focused primarily on complex elbow and upper limb surgery in both adults and children. Known for high volume elbow arthroplasty practice and advanced reconstructive procedures, including use of custom implants and patient specific instrumentation, Sam manages tertiary and quaternary referrals from across the North of England for some of the most challenging upper limb conditions.
As part of the regional GIRFT specialist network, Sam has played a key role in establishing and developing the North Yorkshire Elbow Hub, improving access to expert elbow care and streamlined referral pathways for patients with complex conditions and elbow arthroplasty. His collaborative approach brings together trauma, plastic surgery, rehabilitation and paediatric expertise to optimise patient outcomes across all age groups.
Sam works very closely with The Leeds Hand & Arm Transplant Team and has been honoured to part of this service now for 10 years, having carried out many double arm transplants. His love of complex trauma is the most important thing to him; “trying to help solve patients’ elbow problems that have no off-the-shelf solution” is a real passion of his. This has driven his experience and knowledge around decision making in elbow trauma; what can and cannot be replaced, what should and should not be replaced, and also what should always be fixed if at all possible.
