The Changing Face of Trauma and Orthopaedics in Modern Conflict: The Emerging Role of Digital Health Solutions

Modern conflict environments are increasingly characterised by complex injury patterns, disrupted healthcare infrastructure, and limited access to specialist surgical expertise. These challenges demand innovative approaches to delivering safe, effective, and timely trauma and orthopaedic care.

This session will explore how emerging digital health technologies are transforming the management of musculoskeletal trauma in conflict and resource-constrained settings. In particular, it will examine the growing role of artificial intelligence, telemedicine, remote surgical guidance, and digital decision-support systems in improving diagnostic accuracy, surgical planning, and real-time clinical collaboration across geographically dispersed teams.

The discussion will highlight how these technologies can support frontline clinicians, enhance triage and imaging interpretation, enable remote specialist input, and facilitate knowledge transfer in environments where traditional healthcare systems are disrupted. The session will also consider the practical, ethical, and logistical challenges associated with implementing digital health solutions in austere and high-risk settings.

Through real-world examples and emerging evidence, this session aims to provide insight into how digital innovation is reshaping trauma and orthopaedic care in modern conflicts and how these developments may influence future civilian trauma systems and global surgical practice.
