Session Title: Bone and Joint Infection – The Great Debates
Session Description: This session covers some of the key areas of debate in bone and joint infection. The session starts with a 10-minute opening lecture providing a concise update on the latest developments in bone and joint infection. Each debate will feature expert speakers presenting for and against the statement, facilitating discussion into current controversies and evolving practices. The session concludes with a 5-minute panel Q&A and wrap-up, offering delegates the chance to engage with the faculty.

Consultant Revision Arthroplasty/trauma Surgeon, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust







Mr Petheram is an experienced hip and knee replacement surgeon, being in consultant practice since 2014. He has a specialist interest in complex hip and knee replacement and revision (re-do). Following training in Exeter, London and the North East he undertook specialist fellowship training in the world famous Exeter Hip unit. He has undertaken a prestigious AAHKS travelling fellowship to Mayo clinic and Rothman Institutes in North America.
With a high volume practice Mr Petheram is a busy joint replacement surgeon. He is heavily involved in several national projects, including roles on the executive committee of the British Hip Society, the UK Bone and Joint Infection Society, and helps lead the UK Bone and Joint Infection Registry. He has received National recognition of his surgical training as National Trainer of the Year in 2023. He has published and presented several papers on hip and knee replacement surgery, attends meetings across the UK and world to stay up to date, often as faculty, and has led various large multicentre studies in Northumbria, such as the RACER Hip robotic hip replacement research project.

Consultant Revision Arthroplasty/trauma Surgeon, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Mr Shelton Graduated from the University of Dundee in 2010 and after completion of foundation & core training joined the Mersey rotation in 2014 for higher surgical training in trauma & orthopaedics achieving his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2019 and Certificate of Completion of Training in February 2021. The excellent outcomes of joint replacement surgery drove Mr Shelton to seek further fellowship training in arthroplasty and complex trauma, completing The Cavendish revision arthroplasty fellowship here in Sheffield along with fellowships in young adult hip/arthroplasty at Prince of Wales Hospital Sydney and major trauma/metastatic arthroplasty at Royal Prince Alfred Sydney. Mr Shelton was appointed to his NHS role at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in October 2022 and joined the team here in December 2023.
Mr Shelton also has a keen interest in global development of orthopaedics and promoting access to orthopaedic care in low and middle income countries. Mr Shelton was the Kadoorie fellow at The Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh Cambodia and returns annually to provide support and training to the local Khmer surgeons working there. For his work in surgical education he has been awarded membership to the faculty of surgical educators by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Mr Shelton’s research interests focus around efficiency, systems and processes and is actively involved in the development of the South Yorkshire Major Revision Network promoting the best possible care for your patients around the region.

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Ayrshire
Peter Young is a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics in the West of Scotland. He undertook the BOA Travelling Fellowship in adult reconstruction and has subspecialty interests in revision hip and knee arthroplasty, bone and joint infection and the management of metastatic bone disease. He supports stem cell research with the University of Glasgow, Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment (CeMi).

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust
Enis is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon working at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust in the Major Trauma Centre since 2011.
His specialist interest is in the management of acute complex trauma in both the upper and lower limbs in adults and pediatrics. Enis’ sub-specialty interests are the management of bone infection, non-union, deformity correction and limb lengthening and works with plastic surgeons performing combined operating lists and MDT clinics.
Enis enjoys teaching at local, regional, national and international courses and is an honorary senior lecturer at the Brighton & Sussex Medical School. He is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the British Limb Reconstruction Society and the Royal Society of Medicine.
In his spare time, apart from skiing, running and cycling, you will mostly find him grilling away at his bbq!



Dr Neil Ritchie is a consultant in infectious diseases and acute medicine at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He has an interest in management of acute infections in ambulatory care and attends the orthopaedic implant infection MDT.
