Agenda

15.00-15.30: William Allum BSc MD FRCS (Eng) Hon FRCS (Edin), Council member RCSEng,
                        Chair The Intercollegiate EST Board
Royal  College of Surgeons New Curriculum Clinical Framework
The talk will focus on the evolving role of Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) within modern
surgical teams. It will outline the need for a structured, nationally recognised competency
-based curriculum to support safe and effective task-sharing in theatre. As chair of the
                        Intercollegiate EST Board,
Mr Allum will discuss the importance of professional standards, assessment frameworks, and
credentialing pathways to ensure SCPs are trained to a level that supports consultant-led
                        service delivery.

15.30-16.00: Sebastian Dawson-Bowling MA, MSc, LLM, FRCS(Tr&Orth),  Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon,
Barts Health NHS Trust, Council Member and Elected Trustee, British Orthopaedic Association
                       Consent
This session outlines the consent process in orthopaedics and what the Extended Clinical Team
must have in place to obtain valid consent safely: defined scope of practice, procedure-specific
training and assessment, and demonstrable competence in communicating material risks,
alternatives (including non-operative options), and expected outcomes. It will cover the
safeguards required—formal local authorisation, supervision and escalation routes, use of
standardised information resources, and robust documentation and audit—to ensure consent
is patient-centred, legally defensible, and aligned with governance and medico-legal
                       expectations.

16.00-16.30: Juliette Murray, National Clinical Director, Centre for Sustainable Delivery
Chair Faculty of Perioperative Care, RCSEd
Role-specific appraisal for members of the Extended Surgical Team
Being able to act as an appraiser and assessor involves evaluating the performance of other
healthcare professionals, particularly SCPs and ACPs and providing feedback to support their
professional development and ongoing competence. This includes assessing clinical skills,
knowledge and professional behaviour, as well as ensuring adherence to established standards
                       and guideline.
