16:10 - 16:40 Principles of surgical fixation of fragility fractures Peter Giannoudis
Objectives:
a) Aim to establish principles of management for fractures of long bones, femur, tibia, humerus, forearm. Nail/plate/external fixator. Type of plate, type and number of screws. Role of cement augmentation
b) Joint fractures, quite disabling discussion fix or replace. For fixation there is a vast increase in hardware
For replacement improved prosthesis eg shoulder, reversed polarity allows almost immediate use of the arm, irrespective of the state of rotator cuff
For knee joint fractures full weight bearing as soon as soft tissue injury settled
In the elbow early mobilisation and return to function
c) Ankle fractures surgical tactic to permit full weight bearing as soon as possible-im nail or ex-fix
16:40 - 17:05 Management of long bone fractures in a District General Hospital Usman Ahmed
Objectives:
The session should include long bone fractures in both non-polytrauma patients and in polytrauma patient. The aim is to allow delegates, particularly senior members to openly discuss their concerns as they feel deskilled to manage these injuries. The discussion should include traction, both skin and skeletal, IM nail, plate, and external fixator.

a) To highlight the absence of a centralised trauma registry in Sri Lanka and its impact on trauma care planning and policy development.
b) To present a stepwise model of trauma data collection and analysis from hospital-based studies in the Northern Province as a scalable national framework.
c) To demonstrate regional variations in trauma patterns and injury types through real-world data from road traffic accidents and falls.
d) To advocate for data-driven trauma prevention and response systems by showcasing the social, economic, and functional consequences of injuries.
e) To propose a sustainable national trauma registry model that supports public health policy, emergency preparedness, and injury prevention strategies.
17:20 - 17:40 Clinical case presentation FRCS (Orth) Ansar Mahmood and Anna Clark
'Impartial' arbitrator Janardhan Rao (Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon and examiner)
Clinical case presentation by the Chairman and co-chairman for discussion with the delegates and the guest speakers.
Included will be a FRCS examiner as 'impartial' arbitrator who will see fair play and also summarise sessions and tease out learning points.
