A day for the whole team to consider how we manage people admitted to hospital with injuries. Bringing all key contributors together reinforces that this is a shared responsibility. A central theme is equity: patients with similar problems should receive similar care.
The morning sessions will examine current practice across a range of injuries — what works well and what does not. The afternoon session will focus on how care can be improved. Although older patients occupy the greatest number of trauma bed‑days, no boundaries are set for the discussion; the group will consider the full population of patients for whom we collectively hold responsibility.

What About People with Other Injuries?
Professor Antony Johansen has worked as a full-time orthogeriatrician in the trauma wards of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for the last 30 years. He co-authored the 2007 British Orthopaedic Association’s ‘Blue Book’ of Fragility Fracture and the 2011 NICE Hip Fracture Guideline (CG124), and from 2013-2026 was Orthogeriatrician lead for the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) at the Royal College of Physicians.
Bob is the GIRFT National Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Trauma. He was a Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon in Oxford with a trauma only practice for 31 years. He is a Past President of the British Orthopaedic Association and Orthopaedic Trauma Society. He was a member of the NICE guideline development for Hip Fractures co-chaired the two groups for the orthopaedic components of the 2016 NICE Trauma suite. In the past he had wandered; working in Shetland, the Falklands and the Antarctic. He has subsequently been domesticated and now mends toys and attends weddings.
Dr Agwade-Akeru is a consultant ortho-geriatrician at Whipps Cross Hospital and GIRFT clinical adviser for ortho-geriatrics and clinical effectiveness for older person’s services,
She is an enthusiastic proponent of equitable team care of the injured patient. Since her appointment in 2020, she has successfully developed and implemented a centralised integrated ortho-geriatric service for north-east London patients within the Barts Health hip fracture pathway, delivering significant improvements in patient outcomes. She believes in bringing the concepts ERAS (Enhanced recovery after surgery) to her injured patients whether or not an operation is required.
