Professor Xavier Griffin

Professor Xavier Griffin spearheads academic orthopaedics at QMUL and Barts Health, having joined in August 2020 as the inaugural chair of Bone & Joint Health. Xavier’s vision is for worldclass excellence in research and clinical academic training; providing opportunity for the next generation of clinician scientists to realise their aspirations.

Xavier has been awarded over £12m of research funding and over 100 peer reviewed publications. He is a recognised research leader in the management of hip fracture and is excited to have launched the WHiTE PLATFORM study with colleagues at University of Oxford. Xavier is Chief Investigator for a number of National Institute Health Research funded clinical trials, having led 9 in the last 5 years and supported a further 5.

Xavier is driven by having meaningful impact on patient care; his research is focused on the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing treatments to improve bone and joint health and has been cited by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. He has a passion for developing methodologies which harness the speed, power and efficiency of routinely-collected data but are coupled with the great advantages of randomisation.

Xavier’s clinical expertise is orthopaedic trauma surgery specialising in pelvic and acetabular fractures. He enjoys working as part of the team at the busiest orthopaedic trauma hospital in Europe – The Royal London. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1999 before attending medical school at the University of Oxford, Xavier trained in orthopaedic surgery as a National Institute of Health Research integrated clinical academic fellow. Xavier completed a world-renowned clinical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia specialising in complex fractures of the pelvis and hip. Prior to joining Bone & Joint Health Xavier was Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital major trauma centre.

Outside of work Xavier can be found mountain biking or rock climbing usually with his young sons in tow!

Professor Daniel Perry

Dan is Professor of Children's Orthopaedic Surgeon at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and a NIHR Research Professor.

Dan specialises in Children’s Hip Disease and Trauma. He trained in Liverpool and Warwick, before completing a fellowship at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He was the first orthopaedic surgeon to have been awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship.

Dan’s major research interests are in epidemiology and effectiveness research. He has an international portfolio of clinical trials. He has over >£30m (USD $40 million) in research income, including as Chief Investigator on the NIHR British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance (BOSS) Study (Paediatric Hip Disease), NIHR FORCE Study (Simple Wrist Fractures), NIHR SCIENCE Study (Medial Epicondyle Fractures), NIHR CRAFFT Study (Severe Wrist Fractures), NIHR BigBOSS Study (Hip Disease), NIHR BASIS Study (Scoliosis) and the NIHR Odd SOCKS Study (Ankle Fractures). He is currently working Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago (USA) to reproduce UK studies throughout North America, with an NIH R01 grant recently awarded.

Dan supervises several PhD students, and oversees a broad team within the clinical trials unit of biostatisticians, health economists, trial managers and data specialists.

He is a member of the NIHR HTA Commissioning Board and Associate Editor of The Bone & Joint Journal. He also sits on the research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the research committee of BSCOS (British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery).

Paul Tornetta

President, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons ( AAOS)

Dr. Tornetta is the director of orthopaedic trauma at Boston Medical Center, and professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine of Boston University. He describes himself as a “blue-collar surgeon” who takes pride in promoting a shared decision-making model with patients and fostering lifelong professional learning for surgeons.

Dr. Tornetta is a highly respected professor known for his passion for teaching and efforts to advance orthopaedic education, training, and surgical techniques. His reputation for fairness and transparency has earned him numerous recognitions. At Boston University, orthopaedic residents selected him four times to receive the annual Robert E. Leach, MD, Resident Teacher of the Year Award. He earned distinction as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor every year since 1999 and a Boston Magazine Top Doc since 2006. He is past president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) and served on the executive committee of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) for more than a decade.

Among his many AAOS volunteer positions, he previously served as a member-at-large on the Board of Directors, chaired the Education Council for four years, was past chair of the Annual Meeting Committee and former Evaluations Committee. In 2022, his leadership in the collaboration between the AAOS, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), the Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) and AAOS Resident Assembly was instrumental in launching the AAOS Resident Orthopaedic Core Knowledge (ROCK) Curriculum.

Dr. Tornetta has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers and leads the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Consortium. The consortium focuses on large-scale studies to improve surgical best practices for some of the most common musculoskeletal diseases. He has been a steering committee member for trials that were recognized with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Clinical Research Award (2010) and the Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award (2020, 2023). He is also the recipient of multiple Bovill Awards, given to the top paper at the OTA annual meeting.

Dr. Tornetta earned his medical degree and completed his internship and orthopaedic residency training at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, N.Y. After a fellowship at Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles, he was appointed director of orthopaedic trauma at Kings County Hospital Center and the University Hospital of Brooklyn before moving to Boston Medical Center.

Hemant Sharma

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Hull University Hospital NHS Trust

I am Professor in trauma and Orthopaedics at Hull York medical school, University of Hull. I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Hull University teaching hospitals, where I lead a tertiary unit in Limb reconstruction and bone infections.

I had my initial training in India and further training in Newcastle and the Yorkshire region. I did my limb reconstruction fellowship at Belfast.

I am keen researcher and working on developing PROMS for limb reconstruction. Apart from other studies, I am CI of multiple trials including multi-centre (and International) ACTIVE trial on Pilon fractures. I am recipient of total research grants worth over £4.3 million.

I have published widely in peer review journals and multiple book chapters.

I am an invited speaker travelling extensively within the UK and internationally, delivering lectures and teaching at various courses, national meetings, and world congresses. I run internationally renowned Hull deformity Planning Course at Hull.

I am; President for British Limb reconstruction society (BLRS), Chair of Limb reconstruction committee of SICOT (International Society of Orthopaedic surgery and Traumatology), and Member BOA research committee

 

I strongly believe in “Free / affordable education for all”. I am working with multiple international agencies, developing orthopaedic training program, running courses and teaching in LMIC countries
