Session Title: T&O Portfolio Pathway (TOPP) session
Session Description: The introduction of the Portfolio Pathway, as a replacement for the CESR process for membership of the specialist register, has brought with it the benefit of less restrictive criteria. However, the wider options for evidence came mean less clarity for some who want to pursue this route. This session offers expert advice from the leaders in the field including the SAC lead for the portfolio pathway.
A wider panel of portfolio pathway experts will also be providing a Q&A session, with an excellent opportunity to clarity any queries and address any uncertainties.
For those interested in the T&O Portfolio Pathway (TOPP), the “GMC Specialty Specific Guidance (SSG) for the Portfolio Pathway” is available on the BOA SAS webpage (search BOA SAS), along with other important GMC. Make the most of this session but reviewing the SSG before the session, as this clear and helpful document answers most of the common questions for applicants.

Rajesh Nanda is a keen educationist working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospital of North Tees & Hartlepool since 2010 with Subspecialty interest in Shoulder and Elbow surgery. He is affiliated as an Honorary Professor to the Teesside University. A member of BOA Education & Careers committee – Fellowships and Courses Lead.
He has a postgraduate certificate in Clinical Education, Fellowship of Northeast Leadership Academy and completed Education Leadership programme for surgeons (RCS England). He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh. He is on the panel of Examiners for the FRCS(T&O) and Section 1 lead.
He has been a member of British Indian Orthopaedic Society and BESS Education committees.
Organises the MCh Orthopaedics course from Teesside University. Organises annual orthopaedic basic science course; shoulder and elbow symposium for physiotherapists and allied health professionals; joint injection courses for GP’s. He is an invited faculty to Orthopaedic courses and invited to speak at International and National conferences
He has an active research interest and reviewer for BJJ and Shoulder & Elbow Journal.
Is a college tutor and trainer for ST / CT trainees and offers SSC for medical students. Is involved in local and regional teaching programmes, ARCP panels and regional STC. He is the Guardian of safe working for doctors in training at his trust.
Avinash is currently senior trauma fellow at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital having finished his upper limb fellowship in August. He did his medical school and early postgraduate training in orthopaedics in India before moving to the UK in 2017. He worked in Aberdeen and Stockton on tees rotating through different subspecialities and submitted his application for speacialist registration via portfolio pathway in January this year. He is passionate about service improvement and has completed multiple projects leading to improvement in quality of patient care.
Anna Chapman is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire, with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle surgery.
She qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals School of Medicine in London and completed her Orthopaedic training on the Warwick rotation. She undertook Fellowship training in Bournemouth and Bristol, and was appointed as a Consultant in 2012. She completed a Masters Degree in Medical Education at the University of Warwick in 2010 and continues to pursue her interest in all things educational.
Anna is currently the Lead Training Programme Director for the West Midlands and is the Portfolio Pathway Lead for the T&O Specialist Advisory Committee. She has served two terms on the BOFAS Education Committee (2015-2023) and a term as BOFAS EDI Lead (2023-2025). She is currently the Chair of the BOFAS Education Committee.
Julie Craig is the SAS representative on the BOA education & careers committee.
She works as an Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Julie graduated from Queen’s University in Belfast, and has since completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Education at Queen’s University, and a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. She is now an undergraduate educational lead for fractures for Queen’s University Belfast.
She teaches quality improvement and leadership skills to doctors in the Belfast Trust as part of the QI faculty.
Julie has a special interest in clinical data analysis and project design and is the Belfast Trust’s specialty improvement lead for their fracture inpatient database. She is also the Northern Ireland representative on the NHFD advisory group and a member of the RCP’s FFFAP committee.
Julie’s publications include peer-reviewed journals and chapter contributions to a trauma and orthopaedic nursing textbook. She has received prizes for Best Presentation at the British Trauma Society, Best Abstract at the Irish Hip Fracture Database Annual Meeting, the Bone and Joint Journal Prize, and a “highlight paper" at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
