Neil Jain

Consultant Orthopaedic Sports Surgeon, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Neil Jain is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and the founder of UK Sports Medicine, a private practice focused on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries through innovation. He is able to offer keyhole surgery for a wide range of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries, in addition to administering non-operative treatments such as injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Mr Jain originally graduated from the University of Southampton before undergoing basic surgical training in Plymouth. After graduating from a sports injuries and reconstructive arthroscopy fellowship at the world-renowned University of British Columbia in Canada, Mr Jain was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mr Jain is widely published in peer reviewed journals and medical textbooks, and has given over 100 presentations at national and international conferences. He has worked with a number of sports clubs and associations including Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Barrow Raiders RLFC, Bury FC, University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Vancouver Canadians (Baseball), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (American Football) and Vancouver Canucks (Ice Hockey). Mr Jain is actively involved in teaching and is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Salford. He is the current treasurer for BOSTAA

Joanne Banks

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals, Mersey Deanery Training Programme Director

Jo is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with specialist interests in sports knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma. She trained at Liverpool University Medical School and completed her surgical training in the Mersey region. She has also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff. She works at the Liverpool University Hospitals, a large city centre teaching hospital, MTC and tertiary referral centre.

She is passionate about education and is an Honorary Lecturer with the University of Liverpool. She is a regular faculty member on national and international courses and is the Training Programme Director and Education Director for the Mersey Orthopaedic and Trauma Training Programme. Outside of work Jo loves most sports, enjoys being out in the fells and is an avid Newcastle United fan. She is the Chief Medical Officer for British Judo, travelling with the squad to competitions all over the World. She is looking forward to being part of Team GB for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where Judo will be coming home.

John Rogers

I am a Consultant Physician in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine (SEM) specialising in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal problems. My work involves treating children and adults with upper and lower limb injuries, spinal problems and medical problems related to physical activity, sport and exercise e.g. Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), concussion, cardiac and respiratory problems with exercise, vascular disease related to sport, mental health problems and various nutritional deficiencies.

I work as a Team Physician for British Athletics, and acted as Team Doctor to the British Athletics team at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, and at the last two World Athletics Championships in 2022 and 2023. I work each year providing medical care for the Elite Athlete field at the London Marathon.

I am actively involved in the education and training of junior doctors and physiotherapists in sport and exercise medicine, through my role as a Visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University, where I lead on the team physician module of the MSc course in SEM. I worked as Training Programme Director for SEM in NW England from 2019 to 2022, overseeing training of junior doctors in SEM regionally, and I continue to work as an Educational Supervisor. 

I work as Honorary Treasurer to the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine FSEM (UK), which oversees examinations, professional standards, development and governance for our specialty. I sit on the board and council of FSEM (UK), and on the clinical governance committee to British Athletics. My previous positions include Chief Medical Officer to British Triathlon, Institute Medical Officer to British Athletics, Consultant SEM Physician at the Defence Military Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court and as Chief Medical Officer to Team GB at Youth Olympic Games.

Lennard Funk

Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder Surgeon, Wrightington Hospital

Professor Lennard Funk is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in shoulder surgery. After qualifying in medicine in 1990, Professor Funk pursued specialist orthopaedic training in clinics across the north of England, and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons in Glasgow in 1995. He was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Wrightington Hospital in 2006.

Professor Funk regularly works with professional athletes and rugby players in particular. In addition to his surgical qualifications, he is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine UK and holds a BSc in Sports Physiology and an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering. He lectures nationally and internationally on shoulder surgery and sports injuries, established the most popular shoulder injury website in the UK, and holds Honorary Professorships at Salford University and the University of Bolton.

Shamim Umarji

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon, St George’s University Hospital, London

Miss Umarji is Clinical Director for Surgery at St. George's Hospital, London. She qualified from Oxford University and has undertaken super Specialist fellowships in hand /wrist surgery. She publishes regularly , presents work nationally and internationally and was previously the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Tutor .
As a sportswoman (former national representation for cricket and rugby) she understands the importance of getting patients back to sport . Many of Miss Umarji's patients are high demand tennis players , rowers and rugby players . She also has a research interest in Dupuytren's disease , arthritis in the hand , wrist trauma especially fractures .
