Session Title: Fracture-Related Infection – An Update

Sesssion Description: This session delivers a comprehensive review of the latest advances in fracture-related infection. The programme starts with an update on FRI, highlighting new diagnostic tools, innovative treatment strategies, and the latest research developments in the field.
Following the lecture, delegates will have the opportunity to engage in case discussions. This interactive session simulates real-world challenging scenarios to highlight lessons learned and provide new insights to delegates. The expert panel will also engage in a Q&A with delegates, providing an opportunity to discuss challenging cases, share experiences, and explore emerging trends.
To finish the session, a guest lecture exploring the challenges of delivering an FRI service will be delivered.

Bilal Jamal
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon & Clinical Director, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow
Bilal Jamal is a trauma, foot, ankle and limb reconstruction surgeon who is based out of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow where, alongside his plastic surgical colleagues, he leads the orthoplastic service for the west of Scotland.
Bilal qualified from the University of Aberdeen in 2006 following which he completed surgical training in Glasgow. Bilal was the recipient of the prestigious European Foot and Ankle Society travelling fellowship in 2015 which led him to visit centres in Heidelberg, Lyon and Verona. Further fellowship experience was gained in Sheffield and Edinburgh.
Bilal was appointed as a consultant in 2017 and was tasked with establishing a limb reconstruction service. He is a member of the executive committee of the British Limb Reconstruction Society as well as being a council member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Since January 2022, Bilal has served on the trauma committee of the British Orthopaedic Association.

Jerry Tsang
Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Surgeon
Jerry is an Consultant Academic Orthopaedic Surgeon, who co-leads the RePAIR (Research in Preservation, Aging, Infection, and Regeneration) group in the Centre for Bone & Joint Health at QMUL. The RePAIR group focuses on improving musculoskeletal outcomes through targeted translational investigation into preservation of bone and muscle in ageing populations, infection, and fracture healing.
He completed both his undergraduate medical training (2009) and postgraduate surgical training (2022) in Edinburgh. During his Orthopaedic training, he was awarded an MSc Surgical Sciences (2013) and the Cutner research fellowship (2016) from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd). He received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh for his thesis on implant-related infections (2021).
He is dual-fellowship trained, having completed world-renowned Limb Reconstruction and Trauma fellowships at the Oxford Bone Infection Unit (2022) and Tygerberg Hospital, University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town (2023).
He has received research prizes from the British Limb Reconstruction Society, Scottish Committee on Orthopaedics and Trauma, Pan-Celtic Orthopaedic Societies, South African Orthopaedic Association, and Orthopaedic Research Society-International Section for Fracture Repair (ORS-ISFR). He is a dual recipient of the JIP James Medal and has been awarded travelling fellowships from the British Orthopaedic Research Society and British Limb Reconstruction Society
He is a consultant reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed microbiology and orthopaedic surgery journals, an Associate Editor for Journal of Orthopaedic Research and Frontiers in Surgery, as well as a Specialty Editor for Bone & Joint Research. He sits on the Executive Committee, as Chair for Data Analysis, for the Bone & Joint Infection Registry; Research Committee for the Bone and Joint Infection Society; and Specialist Advisor for the African Bone and Joint Infection Database Working Group. He is a past-Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association Future Leaders Programme.
His enthusiasm and commitment for academic and surgical training has been recognised by the RCSEd in his election as a Member to their Faculty of Surgical Trainers (2021).

Ross Muir
After studying at Cambridge University Vet School and starting a career in Veterinary medicine, Ross moved careers and returned to study at Oxford University Medical School. He quickly developed an interest in extremity reconstruction and orthoplastic working as a student and then in early years training in the Oxford region. He moved to Yorkshire for his higher surgical training, working in the major trauma centres in Leeds and Hull, before a return to Oxford for a fellowship in Bone Infection and Limb Reconstruction at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. In 2020 he took up his consultant post in Hull Royal Infirmary, and in 2022 became orthoplastic/bone infection lead in the trust. In 2024 he became Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Trauma for the Hull Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and the North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust.
