Session Title: Trauma Revalidation: The Trauma Meeting: Taking a Different Approach

Session Description: Join us for our annual trauma meeting revalidation session where this year we are focusing on different approaches to common fractures. Our speakers will present cases which could present to any trauma unit across the UK and discuss an alternative approach to management. We hope to show you techniques that you have not seen or used before and give guidance on how these could be utilised in your own trauma practice. Our panel of experienced trauma surgeons will make input on the cases and there will be time for questions from the audience. The session will also include a talk on the use of external fixation in trauma units with helpful tips and tricks on avoiding the pitfalls.

Chris Crome is a Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. His specialist interests consist of hip arthroplasty, revision hip arthroplasty, lower limb trauma and limb reconstruction, including limb lengthening, non-union, deformity correction and orthoplastics.
Chris graduated from St. George’s Hospital Medical School in 2011, before completing Foundation Training in Aberdeen, and Core Surgical Training in Sussex. He completed his higher Orthopaedic Training in the West of Scotland, before undertaking fellowships at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, and the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
Chris is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the British Limb Reconstruction Society and sits on the Surgical Education Board for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He currently coordinates the post CCT Fellowship Programme at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
Howard Davies graduated from Manchester University in 1999 and completed his Orthopaedic training in Leeds and the East of England. He undertook a Foot & Ankle Fellowship in Sheffield and joined the Sheffield Foot & Ankle Unit as a Consultant and honorary senior clinical lecturer to Sheffield University in 2013. He has an interest in medical education and spent seven years on the Education Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS). Through BOFAS he has taught on many courses both in the UK and internationally. When not at work Howard enjoys walking his dogs in the Peak District national park and plays bass guitar in a band.
Mr Shelton Graduated from the University of Dundee in 2010 and after completion of foundation & core training joined the Mersey rotation in 2014 for higher surgical training in trauma & orthopaedics achieving his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2019 and Certificate of Completion of Training in February 2021. The excellent outcomes of joint replacement surgery drove Mr Shelton to seek further fellowship training in arthroplasty and complex trauma, completing The Cavendish revision arthroplasty fellowship here in Sheffield along with fellowships in young adult hip/arthroplasty at Prince of Wales Hospital Sydney and major trauma/metastatic arthroplasty at Royal Prince Alfred Sydney. Mr Shelton was appointed to his NHS role at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in October 2022 and joined the team here in December 2023.
Mr Shelton also has a keen interest in global development of orthopaedics and promoting access to orthopaedic care in low and middle income countries. Mr Shelton was the Kadoorie fellow at The Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh Cambodia and returns annually to provide support and training to the local Khmer surgeons working there. For his work in surgical education he has been awarded membership to the faculty of surgical educators by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Mr Shelton’s research interests focus around efficiency, systems and processes and is actively involved in the development of the South Yorkshire Major Revision Network promoting the best possible care for your patients around the region.
Andrew Duckworth is Professor of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh and is Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. His undergraduate and postgraduate study was undertaken at the University of Edinburgh, with the award of his PhD in 2016. Following completion of his training in Edinburgh, he was an Upper Limb Fellow at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit.
Andrew’s clinical and research interests are in trauma and upper limb surgery, with a focus on injuries around the elbow, wrist and hand. His current research includes multi-centre clinical trials in orthopaedic trauma, large data studies and the efficacy of patient reported outcome measures. He is the Co-CI for the NIHR funded FOREST and MOTION trials and is a co-app and PI on several other NIHR funded clinical trials. He is an Editorial Board Member for the Bone and Joint Journal (BJJ), Bone and Joint Research (BJR), Bone & Joint360 and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma (JOT). He is also on the Research Committees of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) and the Orthopaedic Trauma Society (OTS). He is a co-director of the world-renowned Edinburgh International Trauma Symposium and is a member of the Edinburgh Sports Medicine Research Network and the UKCCIIS IOC Research Centre of Excellence.
Beth is a trauma consultant at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. After graduating in 2010, she undertook her surgical and orthopaedic training in the Yorkshire and Humber deanery.
She has completed fellowships in both trauma & limb reconstruction, with particular focus on open fracture management and the Ilizarov method. Her routine clinical practice involves managing complex fractures, non-union, osteomyelitis and deformity correction.
Sarah Gill is a Consultant Orthopaedic & Major Trauma surgeon at the QEUH, Glasgow. She has a subspecialty interest in Major Trauma care, pelvic, rib and periarticular lower limb fracture fixation. She completed trauma fellowships at Shock Trauma Centre, Baltimore as AO Travelling Fellow and at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. She holds an MD in Medical Education, in which the focus was the role of feedback in psychomotor task learning. She supervises the Pelvic and Orthopaedic Major Trauma Fellowships at QEIH, the West of Scotland Major Trauma centre. Sarah was previous Bone & Joint 360 Journal podcast editor and currently teaches on national and international periprosthetic fracture, IM nailing and chest wall trauma courses.
I am Adelle Fishlock. I am a Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant working at Leeds Children’s Hospital. My practice includes both trauma (MTC) and elective work, with a subspecialist interest in neuromuscular patients. I am the ‘Early Years Representative’ on the BSCOS board, and have recently accepted a position as Co-Academic TPD in the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery.
