Fergal Monsell

President, British Orthopaedic Association

Fergal Monsell graduated without distinction from the Welsh National School of Medicine. He completed higher surgical training at the University of Manchester and has been a Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol since 2004. He is involved in the management of paediatric patients with a special interest in limb deformity and trauma.
He has made a greater than average contribution to the canon of lower-level evidence and has been awarded degrees at Master and Doctorate level.
He has a longstanding interest in education, is Director of the Avon Centre for Musculoskeletal Education and Projector at the Grand Academy.

He is also the current President of the BOA. 

Professor Amar Rangan

Vice President, British Orthopaedic Association

Amar Rangan is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds the Royal College of Surgeons Chair at Health Sciences and Medical School, University of York, where he supports integrated academic training including pre-doctoral and doctoral fellowships. He is a consultant specialising in shoulder & elbow surgery at South Tees Hospitals in Middlesbrough and Director of the South Tees Academic Centre for Surgery. He has held previous appointments as President of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society and surgeon member of the NJR Board.

Amar is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He is committed to promoting evidence-based care for musculoskeletal conditions and trauma and leads a programme of clinical and translational research.  His work is cited widely, has influenced clinical practice globally, and informed national healthcare policy including NICE guidance.

Deborah Alsina MBE

Chief Executive, Arthritis UK

Deborah Alsina MBE is the Chief Executive of Arthritis UK, the UK’s leading arthritis charity. The charity is transforming lives through funding world class research, providing information and support services and campaigning on the issues that matter most to people with arthritis.  With more than 30 years' experience of working in the voluntary sector, Deborah has led major organisations through strategic transformation and growth. Before taking up this role in March 2022, she was Chief Executive of Independent Age and Bowel Cancer UK.

Deborah is a committed advocate for improving musculoskeletal health, reducing health inequalities, and ensuring people with arthritis can access effective care and support, so they can live the lives they choose.

Professor Tim Briggs CBE

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, GIRFT Chair

Chair of GIRFT and NHS England National Director for Clinical Improvement and Elective Recovery

Chair and National Lead of the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) and Honorary Colonel of 202 (Midlands) Field Hospital RAMC

Tim is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and was appointed National Director for Clinical Improvement and Elective Recovery for NHS England in November 2022. He is Chair of the GIRFT programme and leads the roll out of GIRFT methodology across all surgical and medical specialties.

Tim was appointed to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital as a consultant in 1992. His specialist interests are in orthopaedic oncology as well as surgery to the hip and knee. He was medical director at the RNOH for 15 years, ensuring a re-build, and was president of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2014.

He is also chair and national lead of the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) and Honorary Colonel of 202 (Midlands) Field Hospital RAMC.

He was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List for services to the surgical profession.

 

Luke Martin

Luke Martin is an Operational Healthcare Manager with 18 years of NHS experience. He currently supports the GIRFT MSK portfolio including Community MSK, Chronic Pain and Adult / Paediatric Rheumatology

Amy Bond

Amy Bond is Director of Services at Day One Trauma Support, a UK charity supporting people affected by major trauma and life-changing injury. Amy leads the organisation's hospital and community services, working with NHS and charity partners to improve recovery, wellbeing and long-term outcomes for patients and their families.

Ruth Wakeman

Director of Services, Royal Osteoporosis Society

Ruth Wakeman is Director of Services, Influencing and Innovation at the Royal Osteoporosis Society, the patient charity for everyone affected by osteoporosis in the UK. She leads the charity’s work across health information and support, policy and public affairs, research and engagement with healthcare professionals and services. Ruth began her career as a pharmacist and has held senior roles in not-for-profit and regulatory health organisations including the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.

Helen Mankins

Clinical Lead/Consultant in Pain Medicine (Anaesthetics), Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust  

Helen is a consultant anaesthetist specialising in chronic pain and is the National Clinical Lead for the GIRFT Chronic Pain Programme.

Alongside medical interventions, she has a long-standing interest in pain education and the development of biopsychosocial care in community settings for children and adults with chronic pain.
