Participation in high-level sport among athletes over 40 years has increased markedly, creating new challenges for orthopaedic surgeons. Veteran athletes frequently present with injuries that combine acute trauma with early degenerative joint change. Management requires careful balance between maintaining sporting activity and protecting long-term joint health.
This BOSTAA/BASK session will explore contemporary management of common sporting knee injuries in veteran athletes through focused talks and interactive case-based discussion highlighting practical decision-making in challenging clinical scenarios.
The aim is to provide evidence-based guidance to help surgeons optimise outcomes while enabling veteran athletes to remain active.

Professor Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at Ross
Hall Hospital, Glasgow. His NHS base is at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals. He is Visiting Professor at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (knee surgery biomechanics research). He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and University of Glasgow. He is member of the executive committee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).
His clinical interests are focused entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries with experience in treating elite level athletes. This includes meniscal repair and meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and knee cap (patella) stabilisation surgery. He also treats patients with arthritis with a focus on knee joint preservation wherever possible.
Prof Bhattacharyya graduated with Honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Sheffield in 2009. He completed specialist training in orthopaedics in the West of Scotland, Glasgow. He then undertook a further sub-specialty fellowship in sports knee surgery with the internationally renowned Mr Tim Spalding and Mr Pete Thompson at Coventry, UK. Here he was trained in all aspects of modern, cutting edge sports knee surgery and is one of the few surgeons in Scotland trained to treat meniscal deficiency with Meniscal Allograft Transplantation. He has been awarded the prestigious British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) travelling fellowship in 2023. With this award, he has visited international centres of excellence in sports knee surgery in London Ontario, Canada and Stanford University, USA. This has enabled him to gain further insight into the latest cutting edge techniques used in knee surgery in world leading centres and being able to offer this to his patients in the UK.
Prof Bhattacharyya pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery which led to multiple academic publications and presentations. He has been nominated by the Royal College of Surgeons, England, for innovation in surgical education and for the president’s medal in teaching innovation by Imperial College London for his work in this field. He also has a keen interest in biomechanics research investigating innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation and clinical research ensuring patient outcomes are evaluated to deliver the highest standards of care.
Mr Anand is a Consultant knee surgeon with a tertiary referral practice at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
He is a founder member and Executive Director of the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA), and serves as Executive Editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. He is currently Academic Secretary for BOSTAA, and an Executive Member of the British Patellofemoral Society (BPFS). He is immediate Past-President of BIOS.
He has played a leading role in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstruction and has contributed to guidance on patellofemoral disorders and arthroscopic meniscal surgery.
Mr Yasen specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including ligament reconstruction, meniscal transplantation, realignment osteotomy and arthroplasty. Major interest in sports injuries and joint preservation. Published widely in the fields of ligament surgery and knee osteotomy.
He trained at King's College London, graduating with Triple Distinction in undergraduate medicine and a First-Class Honours for a BSc in physiology. He was awarded the Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal in Trauma & Orthopaedics in 2014 and subsequently appointed as the BOA Young Ambassador. He was also awarded the McLeod Medal in Sports and Exercise Medicine in 2015 and is a Member of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine.
Mr Yasen holds additional degrees in Engineering (Masters - MSc - with distinction) from Cardiff University, and Teaching (Bristol University- PGCE - again with distinction). He has a national appointment as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has a broad experience of teaching from undergraduate level to international lecturing and presentations.
Mr Yasen additionally hosts a surgical visitation program in Basingstoke Hospital for surgeons interested in joint preservation.
Mr Thomas is an NHS consultant and Hon Senior Lecturer at Imperial College NHS Trust, specialising in knee shin ankle and foot problems. He did a Specialist Sports Medicine Fellowship at Duke University North Carolina USA. He helped establish the training programme for Sports and Exercise Medicine in the London Deanery and was the training programme director for many years.
Has been the match-day orthopaedic Surgeon for English RFU for over 20 years. He was one of the senior Medical team leaders for the London Olympics 2012. He is currently President of the British Orthopaedic and Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association.
Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.
His main interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of sports knee injuries and knee arthritis, together with trauma and fracture surgery. He performs both arthroscopic (keyhole) and open procedures, in particular cruciate ligament surgery, meniscal repair, patellar stabilisation, children's knee surgery and knee replacement.
Mr Gupte is a specialist knee surgeon with over 10 years experience as consultant, but also has an active research and teaching interest in knee problems.
As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also ex President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section having served as President in 2012, and is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the prestigious British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 70 papers in this and other topics which include shoulder and ankle surgery, tuberculosis and training the surgeons of the future.
He continues his research as a Clinical Reader in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College, with particular emphasis in meniscal surgery and knee ligament reconstruction, and also in arthroscopic simulator training, with the aspiration of improving outcomes in patients with knee problems. He helps train surgeons of the future at Imperial, He is a cofounder for the patient access website www.orthoconsent.com, which provides information on common procedures.
His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into t he unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.
Paul Jermin is an elective knee surgeon working in the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation Trust (Oswestry). He has a special interest in early OA and regenerative procedures.
Paul is also an honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Keele, Director of Medical Education at Oswestry. Paul has recently founded and runs the monthly National Complex Cartilage meeting. He is also a current Christan Bezenar Fellow.
Mr Neil Jain is a specialist in the treatment of sports injuries & joint preservation with a particular interest in knee and shoulder arthroscopy. He has a tertiary referral practice relating to knee ligament reconstruction and cartilage and meniscal injury particularly within active sports participants, along with treating many retired professional sports men and women more relating to joint preservation. He is actively involved in teaching having lectured to the University of Manchester, University of Liverpool and University of Lancaster about Orthopaedic and Sports Injuries. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Salford.
Having gained his medical degree from the University of Southampton Mr Jain then completed his further Orthopaedic surgical training on the North West Orthopaedic rotation. He completed a Sports Injuries and Reconstructive Arthroscopy Fellowship at the world-renowned University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He is published in many peer-reviewed journals and continues to present at National and International meetings.
With a keen interest in sport Mr Jain has worked with a number of sports clubs and associations both amateur and professional including working with the Football Association (The FA) and the England National Football team, along with many professional football clubs, rugby clubs, county cricket teams and international world champion boxers and mixed martial artists. Outside of Orthopaedic Surgery he is heavily involved in delivery of medical care within sports medicine having contributed medical care at the Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. He is the current Vice-President of BOSTAA.
Abtin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford (NDORMS). He graduated from University of London (Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine). After completing basic surgical training on the prestigious Hammersmith surgical rotation, he began higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme in 2008. He took three years out of programme to undertake a PhD (DPhil) as the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit Fellow at the University of Oxford. His DPhil was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”. Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was then appointed in Oxford as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Clinically, he has a specialist interest in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, revision knee arthroplasty, and peri-prosthetic joint infection.
