Professor Andrew McCaskie

Professor McCaskie is an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in lower limb surgery e.g. hip arthroscopy and related research. His research aims to develop innovative solutions, particularly regenerative, for patient benefit in musculoskeletal disease. One focus is Osteoarthritis (OA), which affects around 8 million people in the UK alone. The research encompasses a greater understanding of the causes of musculoskeletal disease and the mechanisms of action of therapy.
He is the Director of the Arthritis Research UK Tissue Engineering Centre. The £6 million Centre is based at four sites: Newcastle University, the University of Aberdeen, Keele University/the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Oswestry and the University of York. Funded by a core grant of £2.4 million over five years from Arthritis Research UK with a further £3.4 million pledged by the four participating universities, the centre brings together leading clinicians, engineers and biologists from research and clinical groups. The aim and potential clinical impact is to treat early osteoarthritis by introducing stem cells into damaged joints in conjunction with existing surgical procedures. Prof McCaskie leads the Smart Step consortium (£1.1M) as part of Stage II UK Regenerative Medicine Platform. The aim is to develop cell-free approaches to Osteoarthritis and establish a translational pipeline for their development.

Professor Caroline Hing
Professor of Orthopaedics, St George’s University, London
Caroline trained in Medicine at University College London with an intercalated BSc(Hons) in Anatomy & Developmental Biology. She completed her Orthopaedic and Trauma training on the Pott Rotation based at Barts and The London Hospitals with a further period of training at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital whilst completing an MD, doctoral thesis on patellofemoral instability. She also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering awarded by the University of Wales. Her fellowships included trauma at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and knee surgery at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in London.
Caroline has subspecialty interests in knee surgery, especially patellofemoral instability and in trauma. She is a Professor of orthopaedics at St George’s University London with research interests in patellofemoral instability and trauma. She has established a patellofemoral service within St George’s Hospital for local and regional referrals. She was clinical director for corporate outpatients at St George’s Hospital from 2019-2024 and previously lead for research in orthopaedics in the trust, having supervised over 50 orthopaedic trials. She has developed an orthopaedic trauma trials research infrastructure within St George’s including research physiotherapists, clinical trials managers and research fellows. Together with Miss Gelfer she supervises an education foundation year doctor, education fellow and an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow. She is co-editor in chief of The Knee Journal, research chair for the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, immediate past research chair for AOUKI and a previous BOA trustee. She lectures nationally and internationally on patellofemoral instability and trauma.

Professor Daniel Perry
NIHR Research Professor, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
Dan is Professor of Children's Orthopaedic Surgeon at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and a NIHR Research Professor.
Dan specialises in Children’s Hip Disease and Trauma. He trained in Liverpool and Warwick, before completing a fellowship at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He was the first orthopaedic surgeon to have been awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship.
Dan’s major research interests are in epidemiology and effectiveness research. He has an international portfolio of clinical trials. He has over >£30m (USD $40 million) in research income, including as Chief Investigator on the NIHR British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance (BOSS) Study (Paediatric Hip Disease), NIHR FORCE Study (Simple Wrist Fractures), NIHR SCIENCE Study (Medial Epicondyle Fractures), NIHR CRAFFT Study (Severe Wrist Fractures), NIHR BigBOSS Study (Hip Disease), NIHR BASIS Study (Scoliosis) and the NIHR Odd SOCKS Study (Ankle Fractures). He is currently working Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago (USA) to reproduce UK studies throughout North America, with an NIH R01 grant recently awarded.
Dan supervises several PhD students, and oversees a broad team within the clinical trials unit of biostatisticians, health economists, trial managers and data specialists.
He is a member of the NIHR HTA Commissioning Board and Associate Editor of The Bone & Joint Journal. He also sits on the research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the research committee of BSCOS (British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery).

Edward Davis
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Clinical Service Lead for Arthroplasty and Honorary Professor, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham / University of Birmingham
Professor Edward Davis is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Service Lead for Arthroplasty at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, and Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham. He specialises in primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery and is internationally recognised for his expertise in robotic-assisted surgery, computer navigation and advanced joint replacement techniques.
Professor Davis graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School and completed his orthopaedic training in the West Midlands, followed by a specialist fellowship in revision hip and knee arthroplasty in Toronto, Canada. He holds an MSc in Trauma, a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education and FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics).
His clinical and academic interests focus on improving outcomes in hip and knee replacement surgery through the development and application of new technologies, including computer-assisted surgery, robotics and data-driven approaches to patient care. He has played a leading role in the development of navigation and robotic systems within orthopaedics and is widely invited to lecture, teach and demonstrate these techniques nationally and internationally.
Alongside his clinical practice, Professor Davis is actively involved in research, education and training, serving as Head of Academy at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and contributing to the education of medical students, trainees and orthopaedic surgeons.

Hemant Sharma
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Hull University Hospital NHS Trust
"I am a Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics at Hull York Medical School, University of Hull, and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where I work in a tertiary referral unit specialising in limb reconstruction and bone infection.
I completed my initial medical education and orthopaedic training in Gwalior, India, followed by SpR training in Newcastle and the Yorkshire region. I pursued advanced subspecialty fellowship in limb reconstruction at Belfast and Italy.
My clinical and academic work focuses on limb reconstruction and bone infection. I am an active clinical researcher and I have published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to several book chapters. I am regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings, delivering lectures and teaching on specialist courses and at major congresses. I also lead the internationally recognised Hull Deformity Planning Course.
