Session Title: The Medico legal consideration in Sports

Session Description: The treatment of elite athletes and those who earn their living form spots requires special consideration compared to non athletes. It is important that appropriate insurance in place. The different needs of elite athletes will need to be considered. We have two surgeons speaking about their experience over the last 20 years of dealing with professional sports players. They will highlight the joys, pressures and perils of dealing with athletes and the steps that need to be taken if involved with athletes and aspiring sports people.

We also will be hearing from the legal profession of the steps that need to be taken when dealing with individually who earn a living from sport – this will have cross over to regular clinical practice and define material risk which is important following Montgomery vs Lanarkshire Health Board.

For the final talk we will be hearing about drug use in sports and the use of performance enhancing supplements.

The session will be useful to all grades of Orthopaedic Surgeons in improving their understanding and knowledge of dealing with athletes and promote safe practice when dealing with sports injuries.
