Session Title: The National Hip Fracture Database Congress Session
Session Description: Antony and Will as Clinical Leads for the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD), will in this session launch the 2025 NHFD Annual Report and update on several areas key to hip fracture care. In addition the team will reflect and inform on key areas common to hospitals in difficulty when looking after older patients with hip fracture as well as proven simple and easy wins to initiate to improve care and performance.
The team are joined by Judith Agwada-Akeru who will explore the enhancement of patient care and experience and Bob Handley who will provide insight from the GIRFT platform.
This session is of interest to all orthopaedic surgeons and especially those operating on patients and / or leading hip fracture care in UK hospitals.

Will is an academic orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in trauma surgery and fracture fixation failure, nonunion and osteomyelitis.
Will is responsible for hip fracture care in England and Wales as the Orthopaedic Clinical lead for the National Hip Fracture Database.
Will is involved in benchmarking surgical quality as vice-chair of the Specialty Surgical Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Will helps coordinate United Kingdom Orthopaedic Trauma and co-author BOAST guidelines as vice-chair of the
British Orthopaedic Association Trauma Committee. Will is involved in benchmarking Major Trauma Care and open fracture data collection nationally through the Major Trauma Registry audit committee. Will has recently become an examiner for the FRCS(Orth).
Bob Handley is currently National Clinical Lead for GIRFT Adult Orthopaedic Trauma. Bob was a Consultant on the Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford from 1994-2025. He is a Past President of the British Orthoapedic Association President, the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and AOUKI. He co-chaired the NICE guideline development groups on fractures and was a member of the group for hip fractures. He was also an examiner for FRCS T&O for ten years.
Bob trained in Sheffield, Newcastle, Sunderland and Seattle. After qualifying he worked for the British Antarctic Survey for 3 years.
Professor Antony Johansen has worked as a full-time orthogeriatrician in the trauma wards of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for the last 30 years. He co-authored the 2007 British Orthopaedic Association’s ‘Blue Book’ of Fragility Fracture and the 2011 NICE Hip Fracture Guideline (CG124), and from 2013-2026 was Orthogeriatrician lead for the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) at the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr. Judith Agwada-Akeru is a Consultant Orthogeriatrician at Whipps Cross Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, and the NHS E GIRFT National Orthogeriatrics Advisor. She holds dual CCT qualifications in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine. As Clinical Lead for Orthogeriatrics and Clinical Effectiveness for Older Person’s Services at Whipps Cross hospital, she has contributed to developing and improving pathways for managing hip fractures and older patients.
Dr. Agwada-Akeru has led initiatives to enhance coordinated care for patients with fragility fractures, including the implementation of a centralized orthogeriatric service and a collaborative project with Johnson & Johnson MedTech to establish the BARTS NOF ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Protocol. She also developed a bone health service integrated within falls prevention efforts, promoting increased initiation of bone protection therapy for primary and secondary prevention.
Her work focuses on improving recovery and outcomes for older adults with fractures through evidence-based and patient-centered approaches.
She joined GIRFT Musculoskeletal (MSK) Portfolio as the Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery
National clinical Advisor in 2025, supporting national efforts to optimize care for this patient group.
