Abstracts

Every year, as part of the BOA Annual Congress, healthcare professionals from across the UK and overseas submit abstracts on orthopaedic topics to be judged by experts in the field, with the hope of being able to present their work at Congress. Please see below for more information on the process, as well as the categories available for this year.

Publication

All selected abstracts will appear in full on the Congress website, the BOA App, as well as the abstract booklet.

If you are a BOA member, and would like to submit an abstract, please ensure you register during the Early Bird period beginning on the 12th April for the 100% discounted rate. Terms and conditions apply, see full details on the website here.

Submission Process

In order to submit your abstract, you will need to register an email address with the Oxford Abstracts system. Once you have done so, you will be taken to a dashboard that will allow you to submit or amend your abstract.

Please be aware that some local firewalls may restrict access to the abstract submission website, so if you are experiencing problems, please either try to access the site from another machine, or ensure that you have added Oxford Abstracts as a ‘Trusted Sender’.

There is a maximum word count of 300 words for all abstracts.

It is recommended that abstracts are submitted in the following format for consistency.

  • Background
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusion/Findings
  • Implications ( if applicable )
  • Disclosure

Please note that any incomplete abstract submissions will not be considered for review. All abstracts must be completed and submitted before the deadline.

Review and Selection

The review of abstracts will take place in May. Each abstract will be reviewed by a minimum of three medical professionals who are experts on the specific topic that corresponds to the content of the abstract. Once all abstracts are reviewed and scored, the highest ranking abstracts will be selected to be included in the Congress programme in free paper sessions.

Abstracts selected will either be presented as podium or poster presentations during the Annual Congress in Aberdeen, either in a live or pre-recorded format, to allow a wider potential audience for the papers.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, opportunities for authors to present their work have been severely limited. Once again, an agreement has been made for this year, that while only the highest ranking abstracts will be selected for physical or virtual presentation, other abstracts that reach the standard of quality in the marking criteria will be published on the Congress website and BOA App, and all of these papers will count as a National presentation for portfolio purposes.

While we are planning to host a physical event in Aberdeen, this is subject to government restrictions. In the event that we are prohibited from having a full delegation, we will look to deliver Congress either as a hybrid or fully virtual event. We would therefore recommend that your podium or poster presentations are adaptable to either a physical or virtual format.

Any abstracts submitted that have been published previously may not be selected.

Notification

Abstract authors will receive a notification regarding their submission by mid-July 2021. Please be aware that notifications will be sent to the email address of the presenting author.

All presenting authors must register to attend Congress in order to present their abstract as a Podium or Poster presentation. There is no discounted registration rate for presenting authors, and fees will apply for BOA members registering after the Early Bird discount has expired.
