Through our policy and engagement activities, we:
- Develop guidance on policy issues that affect our members and the patients they care for, including initiatives such as GIRFT implementation guidance.
- Informing policy by providing high quality evidence and expertise on trauma and orthopaedic issues through:
- consultation responses and position statements;
- engagement with policymakers through correspondence and meetings; and
- representation across a broad range of national bodies and committees.
- Championing important policy issues that support our renewed vision 'Relieving pain, restoring function, transforming lives.'
- Collaborating with partners and stakeholders to maximise the impact and effectiveness of our policy and engagement activities.

Policy and Position Statements
A chronological list of the BOA’s policy and position statements on a number of topical issues facing trauma and orthopaedics, including engagement with key stakeholders such as the Department of Health and NHS, and joined up working with other partners such as the GMC, ARMA and ARUK.

GIRFT Implementation Guidance
The GIRFT programme in T&O has been adopted by the Department of Health and NHS England. The report identified both variation and scope for quality improvement in terms of procedure volumes, implant selection and infection rates.
Journal of Trauma & Orthopaedics
The JTO has a dedicated news section with the latest in the world of trauma and orthopaedics. The JTO also comprises of a Features section containing interesting articles on various themes, a Subspecialty section and a Medico-Legal section.
Specialist Societies
We are proud to list our 24 affiliated Specialist Societies. Each of these societies operates autonomously from the BOA but which are brought together in a symbiotic relationship by our Board of Specialist Societies (BSS) to advance our collective understanding of knowledge.
Committees

BOA Orthopaedic Trauma Exchange
The BOA Orthopaedic Trauma Exchange has been established to encourage discussion and the sharing of information and experience through a dedicated link between the BOA and each Trauma network, as well as between networks.
Workforce Surveys
Post COVID the BOA undertook a survey of the workforce and of trainees, to help recognise the workforce factors involved in tackling waiting lists. We wanted to better understand their current work and training situations and future intentions to represent the views of our members at the highest levels driving strategies.
International Engagement
The BOA engages widely on the international stage. This is a reflection of the global nature of trauma and orthopaedics. Our principal links are with The European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology – EFORT and The Carousel.
