Research Initiatives
The UK has a proud history of research and innovation in trauma and orthopaedics, and the BOA has been a long-standing supporter of this.
Our fundraising for research (through Joint Action and our membership) allows us to provide direct support to a number of strategic research initiatives.
BOA Clinical Trials Units
The BOA is delighted to announce that grants have been awarded to two centres: Exeter Clinical Trials Unit and Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit. Find out a little more about each clinical trials unit (CTU) and their exciting plans.
James Lind Alliance
The BOA is pleased to have been involved in several research priority setting projects. In 2018, a joint survey was undertaken between the NIHR, the BOA and Arthritis UK relating to elective orthopaedics. This has begun to lead to commissioned calls for research funding in several of the areas identified.
Surgical Specialty Leads for Clinical Trials
The BOA is, for the first time, sponsoring ‘Surgical Specialty Leads’ for trauma and orthopaedics and three excellent candidates have been appointed to these roles and take up these positions as 1st November 2019.
Research Fellowships
The BOA & Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) are pleased to announce that applications for the joint research fellowship are now open.

Joint Action: The Orthopaedic Research Appeal of the BOA
Through Joint Action, the orthopaedic research appeal of the BOA, we help patients by raising funds for and promoting research into MSK disorders and to improve orthopaedic treatment, restoring mobility and giving people back their freedom and independence.
