Dealing with negative attitudes

This can vary from ‘jokes’ and throw away comments to systemic bullying and denial of training.

It is vital for all to be vigilant of how our words and actions affect others and to make a stand when we see others are being marginalised or discriminated.

Challenging behaviour requires bravery. The insidious comment or joke can be challenged well by using:

  • ‘I think I just head you say “ ….”
  • Did you mean it like that?’

If you are the victim it is important to remember that it is not your fault and to find support where it is available (as a trainee this is the job of your educational supervisor, if this attitude is coming from them try your clinical supervisor or training programme director).

Persistent behavour should be challenges - you will need evidence. If you are being subject to continuing negative behaviours it is important to keep a diary of exactly what was said/done and when, with a note of who else may have been present. An easy way to do this is to send an email to yourself with a certain keyword in the title.
