Course Information 
 

Course Aims

The course is designed to deliver teaching on important / Hot topics and clinical examination skills to cover various aspects of the orthopaedic curriculum over a 3-year cycle. The course is aimed at improving orthopaedic knowledge. Keep up to date with Hot topics and newer developments. Learn good examination techniques to improve clinical skill.

Course Delivery

Candidates will circulate in small groups to different stations on the day covering various aspects of the orthopaedic curriculum. There will be ample opportunities to ask questions in the sessions and clear any doubts. Each station will have experts in their fields to help in this education process.

Course Format

Small group teaching sessions

 Each year, there will be trauma stations, a couple of stations to cover ‘Hot Topics’ of the day and Essential CBD stations. There will be small-group teaching with an emphasis on presenting different cases and discussing management strategies.

  • Examination sessions - Each year there will 3 examination stations. This year the emphasis is on Foot & Ankle & Spine and Brachial Plexus). There is small group teaching where candidates will get to learn examination techniques from experts in their field. There will be volunteers in each station for experts to demonstrate and for candidates to practice their skills. In small groups (max 8 per group) candidates will rotate every 30 minutes to practice clinical examination skills over 5 stations – 2 Foot & Ankle, 2 knee and 1 Brachial Plexus. This will give ample opportunity for all candidates to have a practice.
  • Trauma stations - Candidates will rotate every 30 minutes, in small groups (max 8 per group), to 2 separate trauma stations where there will be presentations and discussion on trauma cases similar to the morning trauma meeting. Led by trauma surgeons, the aim is to reenforce the trauma management skills and learning of appropriate management skills.
     
  • Case Based Discussion WBA’s – Each year we will have 2 stations to cover essential CBD’s that are not easily attainable in all hospitals. This year we will concentrate on Spinal Infection and Diabetic Foot. Candidates will rotate every 30 minutes, in small groups (max 8 per group), to 2 separate ‘CBD’ stations where they will discuss cases with spinal surgeons and Foot and Ankle surgeons.

     
  • The Exam- In this section candidates will be made aware of the process of the FRCS (T&O) exam. There will be talks providing and overview of the exam, the application process, the actual exam – section 1 and 2, the marking scheme and how the pass mark is generated.

    Examiners will talk about how the exam material is generated to cover the breadth of orthopaedics. There will be a talk from a trainee who has recently passed the exam to give their top tips.

    This is the time to ask about all the rumours and fallacies that candidates have heard about the exam process!

Any cancellations received in writing at least six weeks before the event date, 23:59 on Saturday, 30th November 2025, will receive a full refund.

Rajesh Nanda is a keen educationist working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospital of North Tees & Hartlepool since 2010. With Subspecialty interest in Shoulder and Elbow surgery. He is, affiliated as an Honorary Professor to the Teesside University. A member of BOA Education & Careers committee.

Has a postgraduate certificate in Clinical Education, Fellowship of Northeast Leadership Academy and completed Education Leadership programme for surgeons (RCS England). He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh. He is on the panel of Examiners for the FRCS(T&O).

Organises annual orthopaedic basic science course; shoulder and elbow symposium for physiotherapists and allied health professionals; joint injection courses for GP’s; invited faculty to Orthopaedic courses. He has been a member of BESS Education committee and a present member of BIOS education committee. Organises the MCh Orthopaedics course from Teesside University.

Rajesh is a college tutor and trainer for ST / CT trainees and offers SSC for medical students. He is involved in local and regional teaching programmes, ARCP panels and regional STC. Rajesh is the Guardian of safe working for doctors in training at his trust and he has an active research interest and is reviewer for BJJ and Shoulder & Elbow Journal.

Council member trustee

Paul is an active member of several orthopaedic associations and societies including the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), British Hip Society (BHS) and British trauma society (BTS). He is fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow

He has a strong commitment to teaching, training and education. He is a member of the regional STC panel; fully accredited ST3+trainer; regularly attend the ARCP process for ST3+ trainees and a regular interviewer for the national appointments process at ST3 level. In addition, he is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators and have a Masters degree in Medical Education.

Paul has been an ATLS instructor for 8 years and regularly instruct on various courses both at a local and regional setting. he is also the main editor and author for three FRCS (Tr&Orth) related exam books. These are international best sellers and were highly commended at the BMA book awards in 2017.

He runs an annual 6-day intensive FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course at Northumbria University and QEH Gateshead and an annual international revision course

Paul is also a visiting professor at Northumbria University which acts as an interface between the academic roles Northumbria University provides and his own clinical oriented background that provides a practical focus for research.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Orthopaedic Trauma and Limb Reconstruction, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham

Deepa Bose is a consultant in orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.  Her practice is exclusively in adults, and includes general trauma, major trauma and post-traumatic limb reconstruction: osteomyelitis, malunion, non-union, limb lengthening & deformity correction.

She is currently Vice Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedics, and the lead for CESR approval process.  She has also contributed to the revision of the curriculum.  She holds an MSc in Medical Education and has been admitted to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh, as well as being a member of the Academy of Medical Educators.  She is involved in national selections for core and orthopaedic surgery, and sits on ARCP panels for both.  She was regional training programme director for core surgery in West Midlands from 2015 – 2019.

She is the Chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern UK, a specialist society of the British Orthopaedic Association, and a charity which focuses on teaching orthopaedics in low resource countries.  She is co-director of the postgraduate orthopaedic training programme in Guyana.  She also visits Gaza as part of the UK limb reconstruction team of the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.

She has been on the Emergency Response Team of UK Med, a first response team for international disaster relief, since 2012.

Alex has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal surgeon since 2011 based at Royal Preston Hospital. The regional Major Trauma Centre and Spinal Hub, the hospital serves a catchment area of over 1.4 million people. He undertook all aspects of adult spinal surgery including deformity (scoliosis) surgery and complex spinal trauma.

Amer Shoaib

Amer Shoaib is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary specialising in Foot and Ankle Surgery and Limb Reconstruction Surgery.
He qualified from St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London, and trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in the Welsh Deanery and Oswestry.
He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, as well as the British Limb Reconstruction Society and the European Foot and Ankle Society.
He has an interest in humanitarian medicine and has worked in several conflicts, and natural disasters, gaining a significant experience in the acute and reconstructive treatment of ballistic injuries. He was involved in the organisation and delivery of the orthopaedic response to the Manchester Arena bomb in 2017. He chairs the Orthocycle Foundation charity, which recycles orthotics and surgical equipment for use in less developed countries.
Amer has taught on many courses, including the BOFAS principles course and the BOA Boot Camp Course, and runs several courses in Manchester on Foot and Ankle Surgery and External Fixation.
He is married with four children, and enjoys fell walking and wild camping with them. He loathes static caravans.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals Manchester, Wythenshaw

Mr Pillai is Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with University Hospitals Manchester, Wythenshaw with a specialist interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery. He trained in Orthopaedic and Foot surgery in the West of Scotland, and has undertaken further sub-specialist fellowships in Adelaide, South Australia and Oxford. Mr Pillai is a member of both the British and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies, AO Trauma UK, Foot & Ankle Scotland and The Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society. He holds honorary academic positions with the Universities of Adelaide , Manchester, Salford and Malaya.

Andrea Sott

Elected Trustee

Andrea Sott is working as a Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant at Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust and the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre SWLEOC since 2004. Andrea leads her Trust’s large planned Care division as Medical Director and is Surgical Director at SWLEOC. In all her roles she strongly promotes excellent surgical care and senior clinical leadership to continuously improve services for our patients.

As a leader Andrea has been instrumental in achieving national top performance in hip fracture care, MSK elective recovery and patient waiting times providing mutual aid to more challenged UK regions.

Andrea maintains a GMC portfolio as an active and enthusiastic Trainer. She is Senior Examiner for the JCIE, past Surgical Tutor and current AAC panel member for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, continuously inspiring students, trainees and colleagues to take up professional and leadership roles in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Andrea is host to a well-established BOA Future Leaders Programme CCT F&A fellowship and has been invited as director/faculty to several BOFAS and BOA courses and meetings.

She has published many papers in her field. As member of the SWL executive R&D committee, she oversees several NIHR studies some as PI, advocating evidence-based surgery at all times.

Married to Simon with three children, Andrea enjoys a busy family life, running, paddle boarding, boating and baking with their own chicken’s eggs.

As the only female surgeon at SWLEOC she is keen demonstrate that a flourishing orthopaedic career, senior leadership positions and happy fulfilling family life are indeed achievable to all.

Grateful to the voting members Andrea wants to bring to the BOA Council her considerable surgical, professional and leadership experience, and strong work ethics to whichever position is allocated to her, promoting diversity and sustainability in surgery.

David Elson

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon, Newcastle Upon Tyne

David Elson is a leading consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in knee conditions and knee surgery. He aims to take time assessing the problem for each individual patient, in order to provide bespoke treatment options, leading to the best possible patient outcomes. David holds private clinics at Cobalt Hospital in Silverlink, Newcastle Upon Tyne. He attends to the needs of adult patients as well as children above the age of 12.

David will explore the possibility of biological alternatives to knee replacement. This joint preserving or biological knee surgery may include knee arthroscopy; meniscal surgery (such as resection or repair, or in some cases meniscal transplantation); knee osteotomy to straighten your leg; ligament reconstruction to stabilise your knee (such as ACL reconstruction or ACL repair), in a few cases knee cartilage replacement surgery may be possible. In advanced arthritis, he performs partial knee replacement and total knee replacement.

David has contributed to his field via medical research, with over 20 publications in the medical literature; the majority concerning knee surgery - particularly knee osteotomy and knee pain. This research has been presented on national and international stages. 

David is the Chairman of the United Kingdom Knee Osteotomy Registry, established to further human understanding of knee osteotomy as a powerful treatment option. He is co-convener of the Northern Osteotomy Masterclass, which has become the largest cadaveric knee osteotomy course in the world, educating other surgeons on the safest and best techniques to perform knee osteotomy.

Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospitals

Chun is a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon with a keen interest in paediatric and adolescent knee pathologies. He practices at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospitals having done the National Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at Sheffield Children's Hospital before completing a knee fellowship in Derby, and completing his fellowship with a stint down in Great Ormond Street Hospitals. He has a keen interest in soft tissue reconstructions particularly in relation to the patello-femoral joint and chondral pathologies around the growing knee, in addition to general paediatric work, and will be looking to develop this practice in the future!

Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Sheffield Children's Hospital

Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee in the adult and the child. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He trained in Sheffield and undertook Fellowships in Newcastle and New York. He is a former TPD for South Yorkshire and is presently the Academic Secretary of BOSTAA. He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.

He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is transated into Chinese . He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.

Fazal was voted regional Orthopaedic ‘Trainer of the Year’ on six occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by South Yorkshire in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner and Board Member for the JCIE in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners. Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries.

Mr Mike Anderton studied medicine at The University of Manchester Medical School (2001-2006). Following this, he completed the North West Deanery Trauma and Orthopaedic registrar program in 2017. Further specialist training was then obtained in Munich and Adelaide, before taking a spinal surgery consultant position at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (November 2018). His practice involves both adult and paediatric spinal surgery.

Rajesh Kakwani

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust

Rajesh Kakwani is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust. He specialises in Foot and ankle disorders including sports injuries.

He studied medicine and then did his post-graduation (Masters Degree) in Orthopaedics from the Mumbai University, India. He completed his MCh Orthopaedics degree from the University of Liverpool in 2006. He did his Higher Surgical Training from the Northern Deanery, gaining the FRCS (Orth) accreditation in 2012.

He was fellowship trained in foot and ankle surgery under Mr Ian Winson, at Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol, United Kingdom, and under Mr Chris Blundell, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. He was awarded the BOFAS (British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society) Travelling fellowship to the

Sigvard Hansen Foot and Ankle Unit in Seattle, USA – May 2014. He has successfully completed the AO Trauma fellowship under Prof. Krettek at Hannover, Germany in June 2011.

He is and has been a Clinical & Educational Supervisor, as well as the Surgical Training committee representative for the Orthopaedic Specialty Trainees and teaches in a variety of national and international courses.

He organised the ‘Foot & Ankle teaching term for the Health Education North East orthopaedic trainees (2017 & 2020) with fantastic reviews. The comments for the term have been ‘outstanding term and, to some extent, a new benchmark’.

He was awarded the ‘Trainer of the Year’ trophy in 2016-17 & again in 2019-20.

He is the Chair for the regional Orthopaedic Teaching Network (ONTEA).

He has served in the Education Committee of the British Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS) and presently is a member of the BOFAS Scientific Committee.

Mr Kakwani is a member of the National Orthopaedic Selection Design group for recruitment of Orthopaedic trainees on to the higher surgical training programme.

He is an examiner for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) examinations.

He has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and has written may book chapters in reputed orthopaedic books.
