Membership at the British Orthopaedic Association comes in many different categories to suit all stages of your career. If you are unsure of the category you should apply for (e.g. if you are a Locally Employed Doctor (LED)), please get in touch with us at [email protected] and we can help.

Your membership fee may be tax deductible!

Did you know that if you pay your membership subscription from your earnings and live in the UK, you may be able to claim tax relief on your membership fees – reducing the cost of your membership! Find out more on the Gov.uk website here. The BOA is listed as an approved professional body under 'Orthopaedic Association British'.

BOA Annual Congress

All active Members are eligible for a 100% discount on registration for the BOA Annual Congress discount during the Early Bird Registration period.

Parental Leave

In 2020 we introduced a new benefit for BOA members to provide free membership during the time they are on Maternity, Paternity, Adoption or Shared Parental Leave. For more information and to apply email [email protected].

Fellowships

If you are undertaking a fellowship either in the UK or abroad, you may be entitled to a reduced membership rate while you are on fellowship. Email [email protected] for more information.

Consultant

Home Fellow Orthopaedic consultants in a substantive post. Must be resident in the UK and Ireland, and on the Specialist Register for T&O Surgery on the GMC or the IMC. £692.40
Home Member Orthopaedic consultants in a locum or temporary post. £456.60
Post CCT Member Those who have been awarded a CCT and have not yet been appointed to a substantive post. Post CCT membership runs by progression per year between grades Y1 to Y3. £456.60
Overseas Fellow Orthopaedic surgeons resident outside the UK and Ireland, and established as consultants or specialists. £358.20
Senior Home Fellow Home Fellow who have fully retired from all NHS and private work. £88.20
Home Fellow Reduced Rate Home Fellow who have partially retired from NHS and private work. £481.20

SAS

Membership Category Eligibility Criteria Annual Subscription Rate
SAS Surgeon Specialty Doctors, Staff Grades and Associate Specialists. You must have completed at least four years of post-graduate training and one year experience in T&O. SAS membership runs by progression per year between grades Y5 up to Y16+.

Affiliate

Membership Category Eligibility Criteria Annual Subscription Rate
Affiliate Medically and non-medically qualified members of professions allied to orthopaedic surgery. Individuals trained or training in T&O Surgery and those working for commercial companies are not eligible to apply under this category. More information is available in our Rules. £94.20

Annual Renewals

Subscription runs from January to December. Renewals are issued in October/November and are payable on demand. Failure to make a payment by the end of January will result in benefits being suspended. Failure to pay within 3 months will result in automatic revoking of membership and a returning fee will be applicable. Members need to inform us of any changes in their membership grade. Payment Method

Direct Debit is the preferred option, overseas members may pay by bank transfer, Cheque, Visa or MasterCard.

Refunds

Refunds are not payable on any part of your subscription except in exceptional circumstances.

Receipts

Receipts are available and issued either in the post or by email.
