Ghulam Abbas

Mr Ghulam Abbas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a fellowship trained spinal surgeon. After completing his higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in Yorkshire, he sub-specialised in spinal surgery. Abbas did his spinal surgery training at Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield spinal units.

Alwyn Abraham

Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. The highs and lows of working in the NHS notwithstanding he remains a committed clinician, HST TPD for T&O, trainer and FRCS examiner. Clinically, he particularly enjoys the challenge of salvaging infected, traumatised, and deformed limbs in his chosen field of Limb Reconstruction. Unusually for an orthopod, he is committed to quality communication and the acceptance of human factors in medical teams. He lists an eclectic mix of influences in this regard such as Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman's Masterpiece Thinking, Fast and Slow, but equally, The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. His support of the marginalised has driven his enthusiasm for several interesting projects. This has included his advocacy of CSTs as Training Programme Director, the genesis of a Trust Foundation Doctors Programme for Internationals Medical Graduates and the creation of a Trust registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics culminating in CESR. Alwyn is particularly proud of his role as the co-founder of the Leicester Gondar Orthopaedic Partnership, conceived in 2017. This is a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester, University of Leicester, and the University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia). Joy Adamson

RCS Chair in Surgical Trials & Health Sciences, University of York

Professor Joy Adamson is RCS Chair of Surgical Trials and Health Research at one of the nice RCS Clinical Trial Centres at University of York. Joy is an experienced methodologist with a broad range of methodological expertise, encompassing trials; epidemiology; qualitative methods and mixed method research. She has been applying this skill set to a range of applied health research projects over a number of years. Her current role is to work with surgeons to generate high quality research evidence, with a focus on orthopaedic surgery. 

Irrum Afzal

Irrum graduated with a distinction from Imperial College London. Irrum is MICR, MRQA, and a Master of Public Health qualified researcher. Irrum has both research and management experience. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Sustainability Studies and has successfully completed both the PRINCE2 Practitioner and Foundation exams.

Irrum holds multiple positions of responsibility, including being a professional member of the Research Quality Association (RQA) and a professional member of the Research Ethics Committee for the Health Research Authority (HRA). Irrum regularly attends HRA meetings, actively providing her expert opinion and guidance on research ethics and governance.

Irrum is an honorary lecturer at Imperial College London, an active member of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma & Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA) Committee, BOSTAA Research Committee in line with the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), and is the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Lead for BOSTAA. Additionally, Irrum is a Non-Executive Board Member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).

Irrum has published in various peer-reviewed journals and frequently presents at national and international meetings. Irrum most recently received the National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA) Director’s Award.

I completed my subspecialty fellowship in all aspects of knee surgery (sports injuries, trauma and joint replacement) at the renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

I was also awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship and spent 6 months in international centres of orthopaedic excellence across the USA.

I am appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knees at Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the busiest hospitals in the country, which receives complex tertiary referrals from a broad area.

I am also appointed as a Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery & Surgical Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry. I am an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

I am the Training Programme Director for the prestigious Royal London Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery rotation and a member of the Executive Committees of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the Specialist Advisory Committee to the Joint Committee on Surgical Training.

Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Mr Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee both in adults and in children. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he is helping to set up a national referral service for these problems in children. He trained in Sheffield with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He is a former Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire and is presently the Vice-President of BOSTAA ( Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association) . He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.

He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is recently published in Chinese. He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.

Fazal was voted ‘South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year’ on five occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by the South Yorkshire training scheme in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2018 he was again voted Trainer of the Year, this time by East Midlands. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner for the Intercollegiate Board in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners (FRCS International). Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training worldwide.

Sanjeev Anand

Mr Sanjeev Anand works in the specialist knee unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a tertiary-level practice in Soft tissue knee and knee reconstructive surgery including paediatric knees.

He is a founder member and Academic chair for the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA) and is the Executive Editor for Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. Mr. Anand has led in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstructions. He has also contributed to the development of national guidelines for arthroscopic knee surgery and patellofemoral problems.

Adrian Andronic

Adrian is an ST8 on the Yorkshire and Humber rotation and is the current BOTA Vice-president. Throughout his training Adrian’s focus has been on promoting and developing educational and mentorship opportunities for trainees.

Adrian was the T&O Core Trainee Representative for North West in 2017-2018, North Yorkshire BOTA Regional Representative North Yorkshire in 2019-2021 and was elected BOTA Education Representative in 2021, BOTA Treasurer in 2022 and more recently BOTA Vice-president in 2023.

Adrian sits on multiple committees, including JCST, ISCP, and BOA Orthopaedic Committee. He has also served on the BOA Education and Careers Committee, the Royal College of Surgeons Learning Committee, and the HEE Training in the Independent Sector Committee.

Adrian is passionate about medical education and is actively engaged in supporting trainees to achieve the highest standards of both training and clinical care, especially in light of recent challenges to training.

My professional practice is in pelvic and acetabular trauma surgery and primary, complex and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. I have an interest in unusual or challenging hip and knee replacement surgery and arthroplasty as an immediate solution for traumatic injuries and fractures.

I graduated from Cambridge University and trained on the prestigious Percivall Pott Rotation.
Completed revision hip fellowship in Norfolk, working with John Nolan, and fellowships in Germany with Professor Michael Raschke, Head of AO, and in Denmark with Professor Kjeld Sobelle who pioneered minimally invasive periacetabular osteotomy.

Current ATLS instructor, teaching also on the national instructor’s faculty course and an active recruiter of new faculty. Also teaches as faculty for AO, the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and the London Pelvic Course.

Emily Baird

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.

Sunil Bajaj

Leila Benyounes

Leila is ranked as a leading barrister in Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for Inquests and Inquiries and Clinical Negligence. She represents both Claimants and Defendants which include private clients, public authorities and government departments. Leila has a special interest in coronial law and regularly acts for interested persons in high profile, media sensitive Article 2 jury inquests. Maneesh Bhatia

Maneesh Bhatia is a senior Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester.  He enjoys teaching and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester. He is the founder and director of  British European Foot Ankle Academy (BEOFAA) that aims at educating young orthopaedic surgeons globally. Miss Blakey is an Orthopaedic Consultant at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.  She trained in Edinburgh and London before beginning her higher surgical training in Sheffield.  Having completed fellowships in Melbourne, at both the Royal Children's Hospital, and with John O'Donnell at Hip Arthroscopy Australia, she returned to Sheffield for a further six months of training in hip preservation surgery.  She joined as a consultant in 2019.  Miss Blakey's practice includes management of the paediatric and young adult hip, including periacetabular surgery, safe surgical dislocation and hip arthroscopy.  Her adult practice is in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw hospitals NHS trust.

Benjamin Bloch

Mr Benjamin Bloch is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee surgery.

He studied medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine in London and qualified in 2003, going on to complete his orthopaedic training in the East Midlands Deanery in Leicester and Northamptonshire.  He then completed a further 18 months subspecialist training in hip and knee surgery in Nottingham and Coventry.

Benjamin Bloch has been working as an NHS and private Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Nottingham since 2016.  He performs a large number of hip and knee replacements – over 250 per year.  He has an interest in revision hip and knee replacements and the treatment of the young patient with an arthritic knee.  He can offer treatments suitable for the younger patient including cartilage regeneration techniques, knee osteotomy, unicompartmental knee replacement and patell-femoral joint replacements where clinically appropriate.

He is actively involved in research into hip and knee surgery.  He has published in respected orthopaedic journals and presented work at international meetings.  He also peer-reviews articles for the Bone and Joint Journal.

He is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).

Benjamin Bloch is one of the Consultants responsible for running the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network meeting and maintains a keen interest in monitoring the outcomes of surgery. This experience ensures that he stays up to date and practices evidence-based medicine – particularly important when choosing implants and when offering new treatments.

With his background and interests, Benjamin Bloch is a keen and able educator.  He regularly gives lectures to medical students, doctors in training and allied health professionals.  He is keen to share best, evidence-based practice and work with innovative technologies to advance orthopaedic care.

Mark Blyth

Mr Blyth was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 2001. His elective practice is weighted heavily toward all forms of knee surgery including arthroscopy, soft tissue ligament reconstruction, arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty. In addition to this he deals with a number of late reconstruction problems following trauma.

He has an interest in partial knee replacement surgery and has run clinical trials on the use of robotics in knee surgery.

He is the Director of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Orthopaedic Research Unit with a research portfolio of knee and trauma studies. He is also the current Chair of the Scottish Orthopaedic Services Delivery Group which promotes service redesign in Orthopaedics and including same day discharge following lower limb arthroplasty.

Tim Board

Tim works at the Centre for Hip Surgery, Wrightington Hospital where he is lead for Lower Limb Research. He is also a Visiting Professor in Orthopaedics at the University of Leeds, Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Manchester and Honorary Professor at Salford University. His clinical interest is complex primary and revision hip arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy. He has developed a collaboration with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, performing THR in children.

He has a strong interest in research and undertook an MD at the University of Manchester investigating bone grafting techniques in revision hip surgery. He has presented at many national and international meetings and has published more than 140 papers and contributed to many textbooks. His main fields of research interest include improving the outcomes of primary and revision hip replacement, hip impingement modelling, hip arthroscopy and paediatric hip replacement. He holds a number of research grants from NIHR, EPSRC and industry. As BHS member at large he suggested the formation of a BHS research committee to help drive the hip research agenda. As the founding chair of that committee, he has steered the development of the Revision Hip Complexity Classification and more recently is chairing the James Lind Alliance/BHS priority setting partnership on problematic and revision hip replacements. Tim is Greater Manchester NIHR lead for Orthopaedics. Outside of work he is a keen fell runner, cyclist and sailor.

Qualifying 20 years ago in Nottingham, she has worked in various hospitals in acute settings. Kevin Bozic

Dr. Bozic is the inaugural Chair of Surgery and Perioperative Care at the Dell Medical School at UT Austin. He is an internationally recognized leader in orthopaedic surgery and value-based health care payment and delivery models. Tim was appointed to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital as a consultant in 1992. His specialist interests are in orthopaedic oncology as well as surgery to the hip and knee. He was medical director at the RNOH for 15 years, ensuring a re-build, and was president of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2014.

Donald Campbell was born in Vancouver Island, Canada and emigrated to Scotland where he spent his formative years. Mr Nick Clement is an orthopaedic consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (UK), and his clinical practice focuses on hip and knee arthroplasty.

He has been awarded a PhD for his work looking at the outcome of total knee arthroplasty, and an MD for his research defining fracture epidemiology and outcomes in elderly and super-elderly patients.

He has recently been appointed as the Clinical Lead for orthopaedics for the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland, and is Chair for research for the Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma (SCOT). In these positions he hopes to help to promote and support research projects across Scotland, and to establish national and international collaborations.

He is the author of over 350 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters, and believes that only through collaboration can true orthopaedic science progress.

His recent publications in relation to robotic assisted surgery suggest that patient outcomes following hip and knee arthroplasty may be improved with the adoption of such technology. Whether this is a cost effective intervention in the NHS is however not clear.

I am the course convenor and organiser of Miller UK (www.millerfrcs.co.uk) an international course to prepare candidates for the FRCS (Tr & Orth). This draws on the skills of 75 world famous surgical tutors. I am the course lead for the Anatomy Section of the course and have already taught over 1,000 surgeons on the course.

I have established the Oxford Anatomy Library of 3d Anatomical Models and 3d printing hub at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. I have raised in excess of £100k towards this aim from Nuffield Hospitals Fund. Three primary models have so far been developed; the retroperitoneum, the renal tract and the upper GI tract. These are proving extremely popular with our medical students and junior doctors. We are progressively extending the range of models to cover the entire human body and are currently working on a highly accurate model of the Base of Skull. This is ground-breaking science which combines CT, MRI and cutting edge 3d-printing. It is a hugely innovative and important project.

I am actively implementing Hololens Augmented Reality software in partnership with Case Western Reserve University at the University of Oxford. The first headsets are scheduled to arrive shortly following a successful grant from the Nuffield Hospitals Fund and we will work to test this material and innovate new learning modules with our senior medical students and surgical trainees. This will be a first in the UK and will help reinforce the importance of Anatomy for our future surgeons. We are currently developing modules specifically aimed at sarcoma tumour pathology which will educate medical students and allied healthcare professionals as well as potentially act as a surgical adjunct in theatre

Having qualified as a Doctor in 1993 I have over 25 years of Orthopaedic experience. I trained in at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where I was the Senior Surgical Officer and awarded the Seddon Society Medal for research. There I trained with some of the leading hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK. My fellowship year was spent in London training in minimally invasive techniques and rapid rehabilitation.  In 2008, in Fife, we set up one of Scotland's first Enhanced Recovery Programmes. Since then we have visited several national and international centers, learning new techniques of enhanced recovery including Day Case Arthroplasty Programs. This learning culminated, in August 2018, when we performed the first Day Case Hip Replacement in Scotland. The Day Case Arthroplasty programme has gone from strength to strength and now 25% of all my Total Hip Replacements are successful Day Case discharges. The median LoS for all of my patients is one day and the average LoS <1.5 days.

From 2016 to 2020 I was Chair of the Scottish Committee of Orthopaedics and Trauma and sat on the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association. 

Since 2017 I have been the Clinical Lead for Major Trauma in South East Scotland. 

Since 2019 I have sat on the council of the British Association of Day Surgery. 

Since 2021 I have been specialty adviser to the CMO of Scotland.

Jonathan Evans is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University of Exeter and Consultant hip surgeon at the Exeter Hip Unit. Having completed his doctorate at the University of Bristol, he now works on the data analysis team of the National Joint Registry (NJR). His research interests include Post-operative Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures (POPFF) and he is currently developing a Core Outcome Set for POPFF in preparation for trials in this area. He is working towards securing funding for an international collaborative RCT investigating the management of Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI), the ROADMAP trial. He is also working to develop methods to assess the environmental impact of health technologies and embed this within both trials and observational research such as the NJR.

Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.  Chinmay is a member of the BASK executive committee and BASK lead in research, as well as NIHR clinical research network NW London lead. He is also clinical director of the 30 yr established Wellington knee unit and CEO of Sportshealing ltd.

His main clinical interests are in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus root repairs, multiligment injuries, adolescent knee injuries, patellofemoral instability, osteochondral injuries and robotic knee unicompartmental and total knee replacement.

As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 100 papers in his research interests which include lateral tenodesis in ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, MPFL reconstruction, joint fluid analysis, chondral replacement and  simulation training of knee surgeons.

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into the unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.

Simon has worked in a regional centre for over 25 years, with a practice spanning hip and knee replacement, trauma and spine surgery in public and private practice. He has been the Orthopaedic Head of Department at Taranaki Base Hospital, Trainee Supervisor and Chair of the Credentialling Committee. Prior to the Presidency, Simon was engaged with the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association Council for many years in his role as a Councillor, Chair of the Education and Training Committee and in the Presidential Line. Simon Hodkinson

Simon trained in London at St Bartholomew’s Hospital from 1977-82.

He was a Royal Naval cadet as a medical student so after house jobs in London and the Navy he spent the next two and a half years on General Duties in the Royal Navy.

After a crash course in all sorts of medical disasters he might face at sea, he went to the Falklands and Antarctica for the best part of a year before spending the second year in general practice in a Naval base.

Simon started his surgical training within the Navy in 1986 and in 1990 joined the fledgling HEMS project at the London as one of the original three Drs flying on the helicopter.

His higher training took him out of the Navy to Edinburgh and Leeds before being appointed a Consultant in the Navy in 1995.

Deployments to Cyprus, Bosnia and the Gulf intermingled with his early career and he then left the Navy in 1999 to join the NHS in Portsmouth.

In the NHS he developed his fledgling interest in foot and ankle surgery, which rapidly became him chosen speciality as the department expanded.

After a period as clinical director in Portsmouth his interest in education started as the RCS Tutor and progressed to being the Training Programme Director for T&O in Wessex for 8 years and membership of the SAC for 5 years.

His involvement with the BOA began with being elected to the Training Standards Committee, as was and then the Education committee.

Kate has worked in sports and exercise medicine for 20 years training initially as a GPSI then as a SEM specialist in 2013. She’s worked in many areas of sport and exercise medicine including NHS MSK clinics, the English Institute of Sport, the MOD, team travel with England Netball and England Hockey and at London 2012. Kate was a Bath University SEM examiner and a clinical researcher in SEM at Oxford University for 5 years. Most recently she was the Academy and Women’s Doctor at Oxford United Football Club where she saw first-hand the physical, psychological and social impact of ACL ruptures in youth players. This sparked her interest in ACL injury prevention and in particular in the widespread use of a structured, evidence-based, injury prevention warm-up to reduce ACL injuries at all levels of sport. 

Power Up To Play is a charity initiative (Charity registration 1182851). Set up in 2019 with the aim of providing free education and injury prevention training to coaches in grassroot sports clubs. We now have over 120 ambassadors/trainers across the UK and would love to have more! We would ultimately like to see a generational shift in injury prevention warm-up at grassroot level where it is the norm rather than the exception! Bilal Jamal is a trauma, foot, ankle and limb reconstruction surgeon who is based out of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow where, alongside his plastic surgical colleagues, he leads the orthoplastic service for the west of Scotland.

Bilal qualified from the University of Aberdeen in 2006 following which he completed surgical training in Glasgow. Michael Johnson gained his fellowship of the Australasian College of Surgeons in 1986.

Sarah Johnson-Lynn is a Senior Lecturer with Hull York Medical School and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at the James Cook University Hospital, with interests in diabetic foot surgery, foot and ankle trauma and limb reconstruction. Mr. Ewan Kannegieter is a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon and currently serves as the Dean of Podiatric Surgery at the Royal College of Podiatry (2024-2026), after previously holding positions as Vice-Dean and Chair of the Southern Deanery. He co-chaired the Annual Scientific Conference for Podiatric Surgery (FOPS Conference) in 2022 and 2023.

Mr. Kannegieter is a Fellow of both the Faculty of Podiatric Surgery at the Royal College of Podiatry and the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.

Mr Majed specialises only in shoulder and elbow conditions and is an expert in the management of all acute and chronic shoulder and elbow conditions, including complex revision and reconstructive surgery. Vipul Mandalia obtained his orthopaedic training with the Wessex Deanery. Len Marais

Len Marais undertook his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He specialised in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pretoria qualifying in 2007. Following his training he pursued a career in orthopaedic oncology, musculoskeletal infections and limb reconstruction. In 2009 he joined the Department of Orthopaedics at Grey’ Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where he established the bone tumour, sepsis and reconstruction unit. He completed his PhD on risk stratification and treatment strategy selection in chronic osteomyelitis in 2015. This is a senior leadership role in NHS-England, working within the National Health Service (NHS) and across government to direct and coordinate the national response to the pandemic and also the recovery of health services. He was a founding member and later chair of the National Hip Fracture Database and was National Clinical Director for Trauma, leading the National Trauma System in England for 7 years from 2013-2020. During this time, he was involved in the leadership of the response to a number of major incidents and also developed the national peer review system for all Major Trauma Centres and Trauma Units. Prof Moran is a long-standing member and ex-chair of the BOA trauma group and co-authored many of the British Orthopaedic Association Standards for Trauma.

He is Honorary Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at Nottingham University Hospital having trained in Cardiff and Newcastle with fellowships at the Mayo Clinic, USA and the University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland. He is still a practicing trauma surgeon, continues to do emergency on-call and has a special interest in surgery for polytrauma, complex articular fractures and the treatment of nonunion.

Prof. Moran is international adviser on trauma to a number of Governments. His research portfolio includes over 175 published scientific papers and abstracts with over 10,000 citations, mainly in the field of trauma. He continues in active research in this field. He is editor of a major textbook, the AO Principles of Fracture Surgery and has also authored multiple book chapters. Prof. Moran is Honorary Colonel to 144 Medical Parachute Squadron, 16 Regiment and also Civilian Adviser on Orthopaedic Surgery to the Royal Air Force. He enjoys running and still runs to work!

Prof Moran was awarded OBE for services to trauma surgery in 2021.

Mr Rishi Navsaria Qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2003/4 and completed his core rotational training in orthopaedics, musculoskeletal, neurological and medical respiratory at the Royal Free Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital, and Imperial College Healthcare Trust. In 2013 he began his Advanced Orthopaedic Practitioner role within Spinal Orthopaedic Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare, assessing patients with acute spinal trauma and those with degenerative spinal conditions.

He won the prestigious National Health Service Journal award for innovation for the work in this area. Sarah is a Trauma Nurse Specialist at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough. 

She has many years of nursing experience in providing care for trauma and orthopaedic patients. Beginning her career as a Healthcare Assistant on the Trauma Ward at Middlesbrough General Hospital in 1993 before qualifying as a registered nurse in 1998, progressing to Trauma Ward Manager at James Cook Hospital in 2012. 

Since 2016, after achieving MSc Advanced Clinical Assessment and Non-Medical Prescribing qualifications, Sarah has advanced her role to that of Trauma Co-ordinator / Trauma Nurse Practitioner.  

The role involves working with the on-call team organising the daily running of the trauma service combined with providing clinical care for injured patients within the ward and outpatient settings.  

Sarah runs a twice weekly nurse-led out-patient clinic for review of patients including those attending for their initial post-operative assessment, for follow up after non-operatively managed fractures with X-Ray surveillance or provide rapid access clinical assessment for patients contacting with concerns or complication after discharge. 

As a BOA qualified casting practitioner Sarah works with her plaster room colleagues in providing teaching sessions to Emergency Department staff on the principles and practice of safe and effective cast application. 

Having a special interest in limb reconstruction Sarah works closely with her Ortho-plastics and Microbiology colleagues to co-ordinate and provide continuity of care for patients receiving complex, multidisciplinary care following trauma, deformity correction and infection.

Mr. Frédéric Picard, MD, MSc, FRCS a.k.a Fred Picard has been Orthopaedic Consultant at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow since July 2005 and served as its Director of Orthopaedic Research for 10 years. He worked in Orthopaedic units in Grenoble, Lyon, Paris in France and Chicago, Pittsburgh in the United States of America and has been involved in Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) since its inceptions. He is member of several national and international orthopaedic societies and is past president of the CAOS UK society. He has more than 180 peer reviewed publications, more than ten book chapters, was editor of two books on Computer Assisted Technology and registered six patents.

The basic research of Dr. Picard at the University of Grenoble in the nineties have been the fundamentals for the technical constructions of the first routine CT-free knee navigation system for Total Knee Arthroplasty. On January 21, 1997, he performed the first ever knee replacement in the world with this technology.  He has been recognized as a “Lead User Developer of Radical Innovation in the Field of Medical Equipment Technology”. He is Professor Associate at the biomedical engineering department of Strathclyde University of Glasgow. Kim Russon

Dr Russon is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for Day Surgery at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and a past president (2019-2021) of the British Association of Day surgery (BADS). She was a member of BADS Council 2016-2023.

She is  passionate about helping progress day surgery locally and nationally and has given many presentations and has co-authored a number of BADS booklets and the BADS/CPOC/GIRFT National Day Surgery Delivery pack. Opinder Sahota is Professor of Ortho-Geriatric Medicine, and the clinical lead of the Nottingham Ortho-Geriatric Unit, providing specialist care to older people presenting to the regional trauma and spine centre and the Nottingham Trauma and Orthopaedic Unit.

Nationally, he has served as a committee member on a number of NICE guidelines and is currently a member of the Fracture Liaison Services RCP Database Advisory and the RCP Academic and Research Committee. Karen Smith is the Director of Strategy, Workforce and Training at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and has worked at the College and with Heath Education England (HEE) on a wide range of issues relating to surgical training for over 25 years. I served with the Royal Navy for 33 years, frequently leading health care delivery in isolated and extreme locations with limited resources. I understand how education, and the effect a good mentor has on an individual, and this has continually driven me to encourage trainees of all levels to seek their potential. I have undertaken roles as Surgical Tutor, Training Programme Director at both core and higher specialty level, and as Defence Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I have undertaken several unusual leadership roles, as a Deployed Medical Director (Camp Bastian Hospital) in Afghanistan, Consultant Advisor in Trauma and Orthopaedics to the Royal Navy and as the UK Representative on the NATO COMEDS futures advisory panel. I have also sat on the National Selection Design panel for ST3 interviews which has been a challenge during the COVID pandemic for all and still interview regularly for both levels of trainee.

A member of the BOA since I was a trainee, I have sat on the Education Committee, as a Council Member and now as the Council member for BADS. I am the co-opted BADS council member from the BOA.
Since Covid Trauma and Orthopaedics has had to change, particularly with refence to in-patient stays. The huge backlog of “non urgent” MSK surgery and the limited beds available throughout the NHS has required the specialty to move forward and look at pathways to shorten hospital stays even further. As a consultant with a subspecialty of hand surgery, I have been fortunate enough to undertake most surgeries as Day cases for the last 20 years. Very few patients have had to stay overnight. Along with the multidisciplinary teams it is possible to engage further and widen the breadth of intervention that can be delivered. This is now one of my areas of interest as well as maintaining my education roles for registrar training.

Having developed a keen interest in perioperative care during her pre-registration training and she spent the early part of her career working within all phases of surgical care, gaining experience in multiple specialties.

Her career moved into advanced perioperative practice in 2003 when she was appointed as a Surgical Care Practitioner in General Surgery at Salford Royal. Her main interest was developing laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the mid noughties.

Following the launch of the 2014 SCP curriculum she successfully completed the MSc in Surgical Care Practice at Edge Hill University. Sally’s experience in developing SCPs in both in practice and in the classroom led her to become a senior lecturer on the SCP programme at Edge Hill University in 2019 and in May 2021 become the programme’s lead. From this position she supported the development of the new bi-colligiate SCP curriculum and is in the process of revalidating the programme.

Clare’s experience in developing an ACP service led her to engaging with multiple arms lengths bodies and she supported HEE with their first Multiprofessional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (HEE 2017) as well as the toolkit that facilitated implementation of the framework. Alex Trompeter works at St George’s University Hospital in London and holds the position of Honorary Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery at St George’s University of London. Ann Van Heest

President, The American Orthopaedic Association

Ann Van Heest MD is Professor and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Van Heest trained at the University of Minnesota for medical school and orthopedic surgery residency, followed by completion of the Harvard Hand and Upper extremity fellowship. 

Dr. Van Heest presently serves in a number of national leadership positions.  She is presently the President-elect for the American Orthopedic Association (AOA), a Director at the ABOS, and a member of the ACGME orthopedic RRC.  She is past president of Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society, and on the BOD for Perry Initiative. 

Dr. Van Heest has a strong interest in orthopedic education.  She served as the University of Minnesota Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program Director for over 20 years.  She also has over 20 publications on orthopedic surgery education, with a focus on innovations in surgical simulation. After moving to the United Kingdom in 1996, I completed my Basic surgical training at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds and completed my Higher surgical training on the East Anglian orthopaedic rotation (Cambridge) in 2005. I undertook a fellowship predominantly in trauma at the Alfred hospital, Melbourne, Australia in 2006.

My particular areas of interest are disorders of the shoulder and elbow. I undertake arthroscopic and open shoulder and elbow surgery. Doing joint replacements of both the shoulder and elbow. I have been operating predominantly on the shoulder and elbow since 2006.
Trauma care is a particular area of interest, having established the Addenbrookes orthopaedic trauma unit a collaboration of orthopaedic surgeons dedicated to the care of the multiply severely injured patient.

Aswinkumar Vasireddy

Mr Aswinkumar Vasireddy is a fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon specialising in the management of complex upper limb, lower limb, pelvic and acetabular fractures. He works at King’s College Hospital (Major Trauma Centre) in London. At King's, he is also the Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship. He completed further specialist Orthopaedic Trauma training at The Royal London Hospital, as well as Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowships at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and King’s College Hospital in London. In addition, Mr Vasireddy has also completed travelling fellowship visits to multiple major trauma centres in America, including the Shock Trauma Centre in Baltimore and Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle. Mr Vasireddy also has extensive experience in Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care and Anaesthesia. As a result, he is also a Consultant in Prehospital Care with the Air Ambulance Service.

Kevin Wembridge

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Training Programme Director, Yorkshire and the Humber Training Programme

Kevin Wembridge is Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Rotherham General Hospital, specialising in lower limb arthroplasty. He trained in Sheffield with Fellowship training in London.

He is actively involved in medical student education through roles as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, which has led to him being voted clinical trainer of the year five times in a row. He has been a faculty member for the Chesterfield Clinical examination course since 2007 and fulfilled the same role for the BOA for ten years.

He is a former Training Programme Director for T&O Yorkshire and the Humber Training Programme, SAC Liaison member for Ireland and LTFT Lead for the SAC. He examines for the FRCS Tr & Orth and the JCSFE. He is the Members’ Representative to the Advisory Board, Faculty of Surgical Trainers.

Mark Wilkinson

Professor of Orthopaedics, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Professor Wilkinson's principal research interests are in the genetic and metabolic aspects of joint replacement, osteoarthritis, and other associated diseases. Professor Wilkinson is a key clinical collaborator in the Genetics of Osteoarthritis initiative. He and his collaborators have been instrumental in determining our current understanding of the genetic architecture of osteoarthritis. He conducted the first genome-wide scan into hip dysplasia, and into osteolysis and heterotopic ossification after hip replacement, He published the first study in humans to show that bisphosphonates may suppress bone loss after hip replacement and the first clinical trial to show that the human monoclonal antibody denosumab can inhibit osteolysis lesion activity. Other areas of research include exploration of the molecular mechanisms that underpin osteoarthritis development and identifying potential novel pharmacological strategies for its treatment. He has worked on the genetics of osteoarthritis has uncovered novel gene associations with severity and pattern of hip and knee OA, bone remodelling responses to disease, and hip shape. He also studied the systemic health effects of metal ion exposure after hip resurfacing has demonstrated effects on bone cells, cardiovascular, and other systems.

Professor Wilkinson’s principal funding sources are Versus Arthritis, NIHR, Wellcome, MRC, Royal College of Surgeons of England, Cavendish Foundation, John Charnley Trust and industry.

Paul Williams

Paul qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1990. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995, obtained the Intercollegiate examination in 1999, and became a substantive full-time consultant in March 2002 with interests in Paediatric and Foot and Ankle surgery.

He was the Clinical Director for Trauma, Orthopaedic & Spinal surgery at the Swansea Bay University Health Board for 4 years until August 2022; then continued in management as a Clinical Adviser to the Neath Port Talbot (HVLC) Elective surgical centre development that was completed in 2023. He is currently an Associate Medical Director in the Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Tim Wilton

Medical Director, NJR

Tim Wilton trained at Oxford and at UCH medical school and in Orthopaedics at Nottingham, Harlow Wood, Derby and South Wales with travelling fellowships in N America, Strasbourg, Bern and Ljubljana. He has an entirely elective practice in lower limb arthroplasty and has specialised in knee replacement and knee revision surgery for the last 30 years. He has a lifetime personal experience of over 2500 hip and 3500 knee replacements.

Tim teaches widely on technical aspects of knee replacement and has been invited lecturer throughout the world and at the major European, North American and International Knee Surgery organisations.

Tim has been President of the BOA and of BASK, and Chairman of the Bone and Joint Journal.

Peter Young

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Ayrshire,

Peter Young is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon primarily based in the West of Scotland. His practice includes the management of metastatic bone disease, general trauma, primary and revision lower limb arthroplasty, prosthetic joint infection and salvage orthopaedics. 

Peter undertook fellowship training as the ZimmerBiomet Adult Reconstruction Travelling Fellow in Vancouver in 2016 and in the Sarcoma and Infection Unit of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.

Peter has a keen research interest having undertaken a BMedSci during his undergraduate training, and was the Robertson Trust Fellow in 2015 undertaking a postgraduate PhD in nanoscale surface modification and bone marrow stem cell response.  He supports stem cell research as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment, University of Glasgow.
