SAS Representative on BOA Council

The BOA strongly supports the critical role of SAS surgeons in caring for patients as part of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgical Team.

The SAS term is used to include all those in Specialty and Associate Specialist posts, Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (Ireland) and LED type posts including Trust Grades, Clinical Fellows, Clinical Assistants, and other non-standard posts across the UK.

The BOA believes that meeting the professional development needs of our SAS colleagues is essential at both an organisational and individual level. SAS are a diverse group with excellent knowledge and a wide range of surgical skills and experience which are fundamental to the successful delivery of T&O services in the UK.

Building on work already undertaken in the BOA this role will take forward the delivery of activities and initiatives which will continue to support our SAS workforce to develop in their roles and to be recognized and valued for their contributions.

Appointment

The postholder must be a current member of BOA and in active clinical practice. As an appointed member of the BOA Council (non-trustee) the commitment will be the four regular meetings of the BOA Council, usually held on a Wednesday (February, April, October and December), plus attendance at the BOA Annual Congress. Involvement in other ad hoc committees may be required.

The post is open to all SAS grades but applicants will need to be able to commit to attending Council meetings usually face to face, leading the delivery of SAS support activities and supporting or participating in ad hoc meetings and initiatives.

It is recommended therefore that the post holder has support for the role from their Trust.

The duties fall within those normally supported by the NHS and the post does not carry any remuneration either for sessional reimbursement to the employer or as a personal honorarium.
