Paediatric trauma remains a core component of emergency orthopaedic practice in every UK hospital. Although most injuries are easily managed, certain fracture patterns and clinical scenarios present unique challenges that require an understanding of paediatric anatomy, growth-related considerations and contemporary evidence. This revalidation course is designed specifically for general orthopaedic consultants who encounter children with traumatic injuries as part of routine on-call practice. Focusing on common high-stakes presentations involving the elbow, forearm, femur and proximal femur, the programme combines expert-led lectures with interactive case discussions to explore practical decision-making, operative techniques, complication avoidance and referral thresholds. Through real-world cases and audience participation, delegates will examine areas of controversy and uncertainty, including management of vascular compromise in supracondylar Nfractures, late presentations of lateral condyle fractures, Monteggia injuries, femoral fracture treatment at age boundaries, and the acute management of slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE). Particular emphasis will be placed on recognising situations where specialist paediatric orthopaedic input is required, whilst maintaining confidence in managing injuries safely within the DGH setting. The course aims to support professional revalidation by updating participants on current evidence, reinforcing safe practice principles and providing practical strategies that can be applied immediately in the emergency department, fracture clinic and operating theatre.

Please note that all Friday sessions are face-to-face sessions and run concurrently; you will only be able to attend one event.

  • Manage common paediatric trauma presentations safely and effectively within the DGH setting.
  • Recognise injuries that require urgent treatment, specialist referral or transfer to a tertiary paediatric orthopaedic centre.
  • Apply current evidence and best practice to decision-making in paediatric elbow, forearm, femoral and hip trauma.
  • Avoid common diagnostic, technical and management pitfalls associated with paediatric trauma.
  • Make safe and confident out-of-hours decisions when managing injured children.
  • Reflect on personal practice and identify learning
