Alwyn Abraham

Training Programme Director T&O, Consultant (Adult Trauma / Paediatric Orthopaedics), University Hospitals of Leicester

Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. The highs and lows of working in the NHS notwithstanding he remains a committed clinician, HST TPD for T&O, trainer and FRCS examiner. Clinically, he particularly enjoys the challenge of salvaging infected, traumatised, and deformed limbs in his chosen field of Limb Reconstruction. Unusually for an orthopod, he is committed to quality communication and the acceptance of human factors in medical teams. He lists an eclectic mix of influences in this regard such as Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman's Masterpiece Thinking, Fast and Slow, but equally, The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. His support of the marginalised has driven his enthusiasm for several interesting projects. This has included his advocacy of CSTs as Training Programme Director, the genesis of a Trust Foundation Doctors Programme for Internationals Medical Graduates and the creation of a Trust registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics culminating in CESR. Alwyn is particularly proud of his role as the co-founder of the Leicester Gondar Orthopaedic Partnership, conceived in 2017. This is a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester, University of Leicester, and the University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia). In collaboration with Rotary International USD 200k was raised and has led to a partnership to develop orthopaedic infrastructure in Northern Ethiopia where up to 7 million people are without the very basics of orthopaedic care.Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. Nate Ahearn

Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant, Knee Surgery , South Devon and Torbay NHS Trust

Nathanael Ahearn is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Torbay Hospital. His practice encompasses general orthopaedic trauma, with an interest in periarticular and periprosthetic fractures around the knee, and an elective practice focused exclusively in all aspects of knee surgery. He balances a predominantly joint preservation soft tissue knee practice with primary arthroplasty.  
 
He is a keen trainer with an interest in medical education, having completed a PG Cert in Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals, and is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators. He is currently the OTS Education Committee Chair. 
 
After medical school at Imperial College, he completed surgical training in the Severn Deanery. Having completed fellowship in Sydney he enjoys maximising the outdoor lifestyle and work life balance achieved by living in the South West.

Muhammad Adeel Akhtar

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, NHS Fife

Mr. Akhtar is a fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon at NHS Fife, specializing in lower limb arthroplasty, arthroscopy, trauma, and sports injuries. He undertook his higher surgical training in Orthopaedics in the Northeast of England followed by an "Australian Orthopaedic Association" recognised Lower limb arthroplasty fellowship from Sydney. He was awarded an MD by the University of Edinburgh and completed a post-graduate diploma in Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery. He recently completed an "NRS fellowship" studying the role of Digital Health in Obese patients undergoing lower limb arthroplasty. He is currently the "Research and Innovation champion" at NHS fife and a Principal Investigator for an international trial on the "MobileLink uncemented acetabular cup".

Oday Al-Dadah

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, South Tyneside Hospital. Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, Newcastle University

Oday Al-Dadah is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tyneside Hospital with a special interest in reconstructive knee surgery and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. He’s from Ayrshire and graduated from Dundee University Medical School. He completed his higher surgical training as a specialist registrar on the Cambridge training programme. He then completed sub-specialist fellowship training at the Professorial Knee Unit in Southampton and also the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol. 

His consultant practice includes all aspects of knee surgery ranging from sports injuries to joint replacement surgery. Arthroscopic cartilage and meniscus surgery ranging from meniscectomy and meniscal repair right through to allograft meniscus transplant and cartilage transplant surgery of the knee. His ligament surgery armamentarium includes anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction as well as medial collateral ligament and postero-lateral corner reconstruction. For young adult patients with arthritis he performs peri-articular knee realignment osteotomies including high tibial osteotomy and distal femoral osteotomy. He performs a high number of partial knee joint replacements using minimally invasive techniques encompassing medial and lateral uni-compartmental knee replacement, patello-femoral joint replacement and segmental bi-compartmental knee replacement. He led and developed the highly successful and innovative day case joint replacement programme at his hospital. He has considerable experience in complex primary and revision knee arthroplasty. He also has an interest in complex knee trauma including peri-articular and peri-prosthetic knee fractures and knee dislocations. He is experienced in paediatric knee surgery too. He also performs surgery for patella instability including medial patello-femoral ligament reconstruction, tibial tuberosity transfer and trochleoplasty. 

Oday Al-Dadah completed his Doctorate Thesis on the topic of cruciate ligament and meniscus surgery during his research fellowship within his time as a specialist registrar. He has presented his research both nationally and internationally and has won numerous prizes and gold medals for best podium presentations. He has many publications in peer reviewed journals. He has successfully supervised many research fellows at Newcastle University most of whom achieve distinctions and merit level awards for their thesis. He is the Editor-in-Chief of The Knee journal where he has the privilege of working with an international editorial board of esteemed academic knee surgeons from all over the world. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and privileged to be an executive board member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).

Abtin Alvand

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC)

Abtin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford (NDORMS). He graduated from University of London (Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine). After completing basic surgical training on the prestigious Hammersmith surgical rotation, he began higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme in 2008. He took three years out of programme to undertake a PhD (DPhil) as the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit Fellow at the University of Oxford. His DPhil was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”. Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was then appointed in Oxford as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Clinically, he has a specialist interest in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, revision knee arthroplasty, and peri-prosthetic joint infection.

Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Anand is a Consultant knee surgeon with a tertiary referral practice at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.  

He is a founder member and Executive Director of the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA), and serves as Executive Editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. He is currently Academic Secretary for BOSTAA, and an Executive Member of the British Patellofemoral Society (BPFS). He is immediate Past-President of BIOS. 

He has played a leading role in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstruction and has contributed to guidance on patellofemoral disorders and arthroscopic meniscal surgery.

Antonio J (Tony) Andrade

Consultant Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgeon, The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation

Consultant Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgeon with a specialist focus on young adult hip pathology, hip preservation and arthroscopic hip surgery. His practice includes the assessment and treatment of hip and groin pain, femoroacetabular impingement, labral pathology, lower limb malrotation, hip preservation procedures, hip replacement and revision surgery. He has played a leading role in developing hip arthroscopy and labral reconstruction techniques in the UK, alongside training and mentoring other surgeons in hip preservation surgery.

Elizabeth Ashby

Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant, Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge

Elizabeth Ashby is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant. She attended medical school in Cambridge, did her orthopaedic training in London and completed a fellowship in Montreal, Canada. She worked as a consultant at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital before returning to where she started – Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. She is Clinical Lead for Paediatric Orthopaedics and regional lead for children with clubfeet. She is also on the board of The Bone & Joint Journal. Elizabeth enjoys all aspects of Paediatric Orthopaedics with a particular interest in limb and foot deformity.

Anouska Ayub

Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health

Anouska is a Paediatric T&O Consultant at the Royal London Hospital.  She has a particular interest in education, with an MSc (MedEd) and is on the BSCOS Education Committee.

Morgan Bailey

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Southampton Children's Hospital

Morgan Bailey completed a paediatric orthopaedic fellowship at University Hospital Southampton. She also completed a research fellowship for the British Association for Surgery on the Knee, with a focus on patellofemoral pathology, for which she was awarded the BASK President's Award. She works between University Hospital Southampton and Portsmouth University Hospitals as part of a paediatric orthopaedic hub and spoke practice. She has a special interest in all paediatric and adolescent knee pathology and provides a paediatric acute knee service across both sites. 

She is a Trustee for the injury prevention charity Power up to Play, as well as sitting on a national working group for injury prevention. She is the Chair for the Women’s ACL Orthopaedic Steering Group. She has a passion for injury prevention in children and young women, and gender parity in the diagnosis and management of ACL injuries.

Paul Banaszkiewicz

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead

Paul Banaszkiewicz is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty. He graduated from University of Glasgow, completed basic surgical training in the Merseyside Deanery, and undertook specialist registrar training on the North East of Scotland training programme.

He is currently a Trustee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and Chair of the BOA Education and Careers (EdCar) Committee, leading initiatives focused on professional development, mentoring, workforce support, and equity of opportunity across orthopaedics. He has helped develop national educational programmes including the BOA–BODS Clinical Directors course, UKITE, Ortho Update and Extended Clinical Team initiatives at BOA Congress.

Paul is Editor of the Journal of Trauma and Orthopaedics (JTO) and co-leads the TENDON study evaluating musculoskeletal education within UK medical schools. He has a particular interest in differential attainment, widening participation, and improving access to mentorship and career development within surgical training.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, and holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from Newcastle University. He also serves as an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC) member and Quality Assurance Assessor for the RCSEng.

As Visiting Professor at Northumbria University, Paul helps bridge academic research with practical clinical orthopaedic practice. He has supported the BOA Futures Leadership Programme, BOA Travelling Fellowships, and the educational activities of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA). He is also lead editor and author of three internationally recognised FRCS (Tr & Orth) textbooks, which have received several BMA Book Awards.

Paul has undertaken humanitarian orthopaedic work in Northern Iraq and remains committed to international collaboration, diversity, and inclusion within orthopaedics. Outside work, he enjoys running, skiing, gardening, and supporting Burnley F.C..

Joanne Banks

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals, Mersey Deanery Training Programme Director

Jo is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with specialist interests in sports knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma. She trained at Liverpool University Medical School and completed her surgical training in the Mersey region. She has also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff. She works at the Liverpool University Hospitals, a large city centre teaching hospital, MTC and tertiary referral centre.

She is passionate about education and is an Honorary Lecturer with the University of Liverpool. She is a regular faculty member on national and international courses and is the Training Programme Director and Education Director for the Mersey Orthopaedic and Trauma Training Programme. Outside of work Jo loves most sports, enjoys being out in the fells and is an avid Newcastle United fan. She is the Chief Medical Officer for British Judo, travelling with the squad to competitions all over the World. She is looking forward to being part of Team GB for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where Judo will be coming home.

Dan Barnabas Inja

Associate Professor Orthopaedic Surgery, Christian Medical College, Vellore, India

Dr.Dan Barnabas Inja is a very committed Orthopaedic surgeon, who has been a permanent employee at the Christian Medical College, Vellore , a tertiary care hospital in the Southern Part of India , for the past 1 1/2 decades . He has special interests in Adult Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Surgery with expertise in both primary and revision joint replacement surgery, and also in Adult Trauma care , both acute as well as chronic neglected scenarios.

He is an integral part of a team that strives hard to deliver excellent and holistic care to patients, including to the poor and marginalised , inspite of many challenges including but not limited to their financial and economic constraints .

Except for a 2 year stint in the NHS, UK , Dan has been working full-time in India

David Beard

Professor of Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences, NDORMS, University of Oxford

David Beard is an internationally recognised expert in the evaluation of surgical innovation, holding roles as Professor of Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences, and Rosetrees RCS Eng Oxford (Surgical Trials Centre) Chair at the University of Oxford, and Professor and Director of Research Partnerships at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, University of Sydney, with a specialist role as Surgical & Complex Intervention Trials Lead. He is Co-Chief Investigator of the NIHR REINFORCE study, a large-scale evaluation of the safety, effectiveness, implementation and health economics of robotic surgery across multiple specialties.

Reshid Berber

Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Reshid Berber is a hip and knee reconstructive surgeon based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.  After graduating from University College London, he undertook specialist training on the highly regarded training programmes across London, Leicester and Nottingham.  Mr Berber was awarded a PhD from University College London, for his internationally recognised research based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He has published several scientific articles and has received numerous awards for his research activities.  On completion of training, he went on to highly regarded national and international fellowships, including a BOA travelling fellowship to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, USA. Mr Berber has a hip and knee reconstructive practice, including robotic arthroplasty and revision knee surgery. Mr Berber is a consultant member of the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network. He is also a dedicated faculty member on several national and international teaching courses.

Rahul Bhattacharyya

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals, Imperial College London

Professor Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at Ross

Hall Hospital, Glasgow. His NHS base is at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals. He is Visiting Professor at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (knee surgery biomechanics research). He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and University of Glasgow. He is member of the executive committee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).
His clinical interests are focused entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries with experience in treating elite level athletes. This includes meniscal repair and meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and knee cap (patella) stabilisation surgery. He also treats patients with arthritis with a focus on knee joint preservation wherever possible.

Prof Bhattacharyya graduated with Honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Sheffield in 2009. He completed specialist training in orthopaedics in the West of Scotland, Glasgow. He then undertook a further sub-specialty fellowship in sports knee surgery with the internationally renowned Mr Tim Spalding and Mr Pete Thompson at Coventry, UK. Here he was trained in all aspects of modern, cutting edge sports knee surgery and is one of the few surgeons in Scotland trained to treat meniscal deficiency with Meniscal Allograft Transplantation. He has been awarded the prestigious British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) travelling fellowship in 2023. With this award, he has visited international centres of excellence in sports knee surgery in London Ontario, Canada and Stanford University, USA. This has enabled him to gain further insight into the latest cutting edge techniques used in knee surgery in world leading centres and being able to offer this to his patients in the UK.

Prof Bhattacharyya pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery which led to multiple academic publications and presentations. He has been nominated by the Royal College of Surgeons, England, for innovation in surgical education and for the president’s medal in teaching innovation by Imperial College London for his work in this field. He also has a keen interest in biomechanics research investigating innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation and clinical research ensuring patient outcomes are evaluated to deliver the highest standards of care.

Leela Biant

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon & Immediate Past President, BASK

Professor Leela Biant is the immediate past President of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the King James IV Professor, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is Academic Head of Dept Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Manchester, Honorary Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manchester University Hospitals an is Co-Director of the regional North West Joint Preservation Service, serving a a poulation of over 7 million patients for Cartilage Repair and Regeneration. Leela trained in London and completed specialist fellowships in Sydney and London.

Karina Elisabeth Bohlen

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Elbe Klinikum Buxtehude

Ms Karina Elisabeth Bohlen is Head of Department of Orthopaedics, Trauma, and Sports Surgery at Elbe Klinikum Buxtehude (Germany). While overseeing the full clinical spectrum of her department, her personal practice is primarily focused on specialized knee arthroplasty, including primary and revision procedures as well as robot-assisted surgical techniques.

She began working with computer navigation systems in 2005 and further advanced her expertise during a dedicated Fellowship at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow. Prior to her current role, she served as Leading Senior Physician in Hamburg and held an additional position as a medical management consultant for the Schön Klinik administration. In this dual capacity, she was instrumental in developing group-wide enhanced recovery protocols and same-day surgery pathways. Ms Bohlen is a frequent international speaker on robotics and digitalization in orthopaedics, combining nearly two decades of navigated surgical experience with strategic clinical process management.

Simon Booker

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (Shoulder & Elbow) , Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Having completed prestigious fellowships in Derby and Exeter, Simon Booker was appointed as a shoulder and elbow consultant at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2017. 
Working in a major trauma centre, his practice involves managing complex shoulder and elbow trauma, including fixation and arthroplasty of both. 
At the exceptional Sheffield Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SEOC), he offers a full shoulder and elbow arthroscopy and arthroplasty service. 
In addition to being clinical lead for an extensive orthopaedic department, he is well published and his knowledge, skill and experience means he is a regular on the upper limb teaching circuit.

Steve Borland

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Steven Borland is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he specialises in complex orthopaedic trauma, pelvic and acetabular fractures, post trauma limb reconstruction, deformity correction, and hip and knee arthroplasty. 

Mr Borland graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2005 and completed his higher surgical training in the North-East and where he developed an interest in orthopaedic trauma.  
 
He completed the Ilizarov limb reconstruction fellowship in Kurgan, Russia. He then spent a year in Toronto, Canada at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and St Michael’s Hospital gaining experience of complex trauma, pelvis and acetabular (hip socket) injuries and hip and knee replacement.

Deepa Bose

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Trauma and Limb Reconstruction, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

Deepa Bose is a consultant in orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.  Her practice is exclusively in adults, and includes general trauma, major trauma and post-traumatic limb reconstruction: osteomyelitis, malunion, non-union, limb lengthening & deformity correction.

She is currently Hono0rary Secretary of the BOA and has previously been Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedics and the lead for CESR approval process.  She has also contributed to the revision of the curriculum.  She holds an MSc in Medical Education and has been admitted to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh, as well as being a member of the Academy of Medical Educators.

Mark Bowditch

BOA President, Consultant and Divisional Clinical Director MSK & surgical specialties, ESNEFT (Ipswich & Colchester Hospitals)

Mark is a Consultant and Divisional Clinical Director MSK & surgical specialties at ESNEFT (Ipswich & Colchester Hospitals) since 2000. Mark’s specialist interests are in surgery of the knee and all levels of surgical education.

He was Chair of the SAC 2017-2020 leading the new curriculum changes, East of England Training Programme Director for 11 years, and is currently Head of School of Surgery.  Following three years on BOA Council and one year on the Orthopaedic Committee he joined the Executive as Honorary Treasurer in 2020/21 and is Immediate Past President.

Vitty Bucknall

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Alderhey Children's Hospital Trust

Miss Bucknall trained in Birmingham before further graduating from the University of Dundee with honours in Orthopaedic Sciences. Following this, Miss Bucknall joined the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Programme where she completed her higher surgical training. 

Miss Bucknall went on to complete her fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Alder Hey where she joined the team as a consultant. 

During training, Miss Bucknall received a number of national prizes for research and education and was awarded the Scottish national prize for best trainee. Miss Bucknall has served as President to the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and has sat as council on the boards of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Intercollegiate Royal Colleges of Surgeons and the Joint Committee of Surgical Training. 

Miss Bucknall is avid about surgical education and delivers both international and national conferences and teaching as well as being a nationally invited guest speaker. As a member of the Selection Design Group, Miss Bucknall continues to organise national recruitment to orthopaedic training. 

Miss Bucknall has a specialist interest in paediatric hip surgery from birth to adolescence.

Pranai Buddhdev

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mid & South Essex NHS Trust

Mr. Pranai Buddhdev is an internationally fellowship-trained and recognised specialist in paediatric orthopaedic surgery and young adult hip preservation working at Mid & South Essex NHS Trust. He’s on the Executive board of the Hip Hope Network, an international organisation promoting paediatric hip health worldwide and on the education committee for BSCOS.

Clare Carpenter

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

Clare has been a Paediatric Orthopaedic consultant at the Noah's ark Children's Hospital for Wales in Cardiff, since 2012. There is no greater job satisfaction than the generality of paediatric orthopaedics and trauma, coupled with the reward of treating children. Cardiff has been a major trauma centre for children since September 2020.
She has been actively involved in education since a junior trainee and this has culminated in her appointment as Training Programme Director in August 2023 to the Welsh Deanery. A role which she finds a privilege and energising to constantly be in touch with training and the trainees.
Recently she has become the BSCOS Secretary and contributes to the Paediatric Orthopaedic community across the UK.

Anna Chapman

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire

Anna Chapman is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire, with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle surgery.

She qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals School of Medicine in London and completed her Orthopaedic training on the Warwick rotation. She undertook Fellowship training in Bournemouth and Bristol, and was appointed as a Consultant in 2012. She completed a Masters Degree in Medical Education at the University of Warwick in 2010 and continues to pursue her interest in all things educational.

Anna is currently the Lead Training Programme Director for the West Midlands and is the Portfolio Pathway Lead for the T&O Specialist Advisory Committee. She has served two terms on the BOFAS Education Committee (2015-2023) and a term as BOFAS EDI Lead (2023-2025). She is currently the Chair of the BOFAS Education Committee. 

Salma Chaudhury

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Cambridge University Hospital Trust

Salma is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospital Trust who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow trauma, sports injuries and shoulder replacements. She is triple fellowship trained from international recognised centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, and spent a year during training at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She was awarded the BESS Travelling Fellowship. Her Trauma and Orthopaedics higher surgical training was completed in Oxford, and she studied medicine at Cambridge University. 

Salma is committed to producing the highest quality research to offer patients the best evidence-based, compassionate care. She was awarded a PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery from Oxford University, for her studies of rotator cuff failure and repair strategies to improve healing. To date she has been awarded £450,000 in research grants, including an ORUK early career research fellowship, and has published widely. She is the associate editor for Bone and Joint Journal 360, and was previously the social media editor for Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently sits on the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Research Committee and was previously Executive Committee member for British Orthopaedic Research Society. 

Teaching has always been important to Salma and she was the co-director of orthopaedic teaching for Oxford University undergraduate medical students for 4 years. She has taught widely on courses such as the Oxford University Orthopaedic MSC course, shoulder and elbow cadaveric courses in Cambridge and ORUK FRCS Revision courses. She has regularly lectured internationally and nationally, including teaching in China and Palestine.

She has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to improving training for all doctors as well as patient outcomes, reflected in her wide-ranging work on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives. Some of her key previous roles include:

Nick Clement

Orthopaedic Consultant, NHS Lothian Hospital Trust

Nick Clement is a Consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and is a Visiting Professor at Sunderland University. He is also the network clinical research lead for orthopaedics for the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland and is an NIHR Senior Investigator. Nick's clinical practice focuses on primary hip and knee arthroplasty and hip fracture care. His clinical research has focused upon both arthroplasty and trauma to date, and he hopes to continue this broad research interest. However, he aims to focus on improving patient-reported outcomes after knee arthroplasty, with the implementation of new technologies.

Professor Matthew Costa

Matt was appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma, University of Oxford in 2015. He was previously Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics at University of Warwick. Matt is also Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

Matt's research interest is in clinical and cost effectiveness of musculoskeletal interventions and he is Chief Investigator for a series of randomised trials and associated studies supported by grants from the UK National Institute of Health Research. His work has been cited widely, and informs many guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)

Julie Craig

Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast

Julie Craig is the SAS representative on the BOA education & careers committee. 

She works as an Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. 

Julie graduated from Queen’s University in Belfast, and has since completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Education at Queen’s University, and a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. She is now an undergraduate educational lead for fractures for Queen’s University Belfast. 

She teaches quality improvement and leadership skills to doctors in the Belfast Trust as part of the QI faculty. 

Julie has a special interest in clinical data analysis and project design and is the Belfast Trust’s specialty improvement lead for their fracture inpatient database. She is also the Northern Ireland representative on the NHFD advisory group and a member of the RCP’s FFFAP committee. 

Julie’s publications include peer-reviewed journals and chapter contributions to a trauma and orthopaedic nursing textbook. She has received prizes for Best Presentation at the British Trauma Society, Best Abstract at the Irish Hip Fracture Database Annual Meeting, the Bone and Joint Journal Prize, and a “highlight paper" at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

Joanna Craven

Orthopaedic Registrar

Joanna Craven is an ST5 Trauma and Orthopaedic Registrar in Wales and an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool, where she is completing a funded PhD investigating Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip. Joanna’s research focuses on clinical trial design, patient-reported outcomes, and family-centred care in paediatric orthopaedics. Her work includes the development of a parent-reported outcome measure and the delivery of a multicentre feasibility trial, aimed at strengthening the evidence base for the management of developmental dysplasia of the hip in infants. She is the Academic Representative for the British Orthopaedic Trainee Association and Founder and President of the Welsh Orthopaedic Research Trainee Hub (WORTH), a trainee-led research collaborative supporting orthopaedic research across Wales.

Pallavi is a consultant anaesthetist , based in London at St Georges Hospital since 2013. She is the Clinical Lead for Day surgery and the Day Surgery team has incorporated short acting spinals , day case mastectomies , laryngeal and mastoid surgery into ambulatory pathways

Laura Deriu

Miss Laura Deriu has been a Children’s Orthopaedic Consultant at Leeds Children’s Hospital since 2015.

She did her higher surgical training in Rome (Italy) and underwent fellowship training in the United States and United Kingdom. She enjoys the generality of paediatric orthopaedics, but has a particular interest in trauma, hip conditions and foot deformities.

Miss Deriu is a keen trainer and is highly involved at regional and national level. She was awarded the BOTA TOTY in 2020-2021.

Deborah Eastwood is an Associate Professor of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, UCL. She works at Great Ormond St Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Deborah works in the generality of paediatric orthopaedic surgery but has a particular interest in children with overgrowth syndromes, metabolic bone diseases and those with neurological problems. She is also the surgeon for the GOSH Ponseti service.

Jamie Ferguson

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Oxford University Hospitals

Jamie Ferguson is a highly respected Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Oxford Limb Reconstruction and Infection Clinic, with a specialised focus on limb reconstruction. As a key member of the Bone Infection Unit in Oxford, Mr Ferguson welcomes referrals from across the UK and internationally, bringing his extensive expertise to a diverse patient population. He works as a Limb Reconstruction Consultant, based in the Bone Infection Unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, UK. Here he works as part of a multidisciplinary team managing complex bone infection of various aetiologies, including haematogenous osteomyelitis, fracture related infection, and infected non-union.  The Bone Infection Unit is unique in the UK as it includes a dedicated inpatient ward, admitting cases with bone infection from across the country.  The ethos of the unit is to aim to undertake single stage infection surgery, often including orthoplastic reconstruction as a single operation.  

He previously worked in the Major Trauma Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and continues to support a multidisciplinary team meeting for the discussion of cases suspected of having fracture related infection in the trauma department.  

He undertook his surgical training in Oxford and undertook a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to the Ilizarov Institute in Kurgan, Russia.  He was also awarded the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society 2018 Fellowship to the United States, visiting The Hospital for Specialist Surgery in New York, The Cleveland Medical Center, The Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He spent a year at the Beit Cure International Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi on a Furlong Fellowship treating cases with complex bone infection.  

His main areas of interest include the management of complex long bone infection, fracture related infection diagnosis and treatment, and the management of segmental bone defects. He has published extensively on several aspects of infection management, including Ilizarov limb reconstruction techniques in bone infection, dead space management in osteomyelitis, local antibiotic carriers, and the diagnosis of fracture-related infection. His collaboration on histological diagnosis of infection contributed to the International Consensus Definition of Fracture Related Infection.  

He is a regular invited speaker, both nationally and internationally, on the treatment of bone infection, limb reconstruction techniques and fracture related infection.

Nicola Fine

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon

Nicola is a consultant orthopaedic hand surgeon at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. She completed her medical degree at Bristol University, going onto core and higher surgical training in the South West Peninsula Deanery. She passed her FRCS in 2018 and won the Sir Walter Mercer gold medal. Following registrar training she completed a TIG fellowship in Swansea and an International fellowship in Melbourne both in orthoplastic hand surgery. She has completed the British Hand Diploma and is now a tutor for this. She is part of an orthoplastic hand unit, practicing in all aspects of hand surgery but with specialist interest in arthritis and is part of the tertiary referral centre for total wrist replacements in the Southwest.

Muthu Ganapathi

Mr Muthu Ganapathi MBBS, MS(Ortho), FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, North Wales, specialising exclusively in hip and knee arthroplasty.
He has a particular interest in personalised joint replacement and robotic-assisted knee arthroplasty. He has developed the Restricted Adaptive Kinematic Alignment (raKA) philosophy, a personalised alignment strategy designed to restore native knee biomechanics while respecting safe alignment boundaries. To simplify the complex interactions between implant positioning, soft tissue balance and joint biomechanics, he has been using a pragmatic Rubik's Cube Concept based on a hierarchy of compromises pyramid.

Sarah Gill is a Consultant Orthopaedic & Major Trauma surgeon at the QEUH, Glasgow. She has a subspecialty interest in Major Trauma care, pelvic, rib and periarticular lower limb fracture fixation. Kishan Gokaraju

Kishan Gokaraju is an established trauma and orthopaedic consultant at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with a specialist interest in upper limb surgery.

Sanjay Gupta

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Sanjay Gupta is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon/MSK Oncologist and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Glasgow.

After graduation he worked in Newcastle upon Tyne, the Central Coast in Australia, Middlesbrough and Northumberland before returning home to complete his specialist orthopaedic training in the West of Scotland. He undertook substantive fellowships at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, with further travelling fellowships across the world.

His practice is focussed on musculoskeletal oncology, hip/knee replacement surgery and osseointegration. He is passionate about tumour research, education and global orthopaedics, focussing on teaching in lower resource settings.

Chinmay Gupte

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Imperial College London

Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals. 

His main interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of sports knee injuries and knee arthritis, together with trauma and fracture surgery. He performs both arthroscopic (keyhole) and open procedures, in particular cruciate ligament surgery, meniscal repair, patellar stabilisation, children's knee surgery and knee replacement. 

Mr Gupte is a specialist knee surgeon with over 10 years experience as consultant, but also has an active research and teaching interest in knee problems. 

As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also ex President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section having served as President in 2012, and is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the prestigious British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 70 papers in this and other topics which include shoulder and ankle surgery, tuberculosis and training the surgeons of the future. 

He continues his research as a Clinical Reader in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College, with particular emphasis in meniscal surgery and knee ligament reconstruction, and also in arthroscopic simulator training, with the aspiration of improving outcomes in patients with knee problems. He helps train surgeons of the future at Imperial, He is a cofounder for the patient access website www.orthoconsent.com, which provides information on common procedures. 

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into t he unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.

Colonel Hugo Guthrie

Colonel Hugo Guthrie is the professional lead for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery across the Ministry of Defence. He works clinically at St George’s Hospital and the South-West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, with a practice that includes Lower Limb Trauma and Knee Surgery. He is Training Programme Director for the Defence Deanery. 

Hugo spent 2 years as a regimental doctor, including 12 months in Iraq. He deployed to Afghanistan as a surgical trainee and briefly worked in Birmingham as Military Registrar. Since being appointed as a consultant in 2015, he has deployed internationally and in 2021 was part of the Military Advisory Team at Nightingale Hospital London. He has served as Clinical Director at 22 Field Hospital, as Consultant Advisor to the Head of the Army Medical Services and in 2024 was appointed to his current position as Defence Consultant Advisor to the Surgeon General.

His interests include enhanced technology in surgery, implant fixation, periprosthetic infection and outcomes assessment in hip, knee, sports and revision surgery.  His broader work also encompasses strategies to preserve and regain musculoskeletal health; he led the musculoskeletal team at the London Olympics 2012, was instrumental in setting up the National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine and gained International Olympic Committee Centre of Excellence status at ISEH. He works with a number of elite sports and was the Chief Medical Officer for the NFL in the UK until 2022.

He was the gold medallist in the FRCS (Orth) exam and has gained a large number of prizes and prestigious academic awards.  He has been an EFORT Travelling Fellow, British Hip Society Travelling Fellow and ABC Travelling Fellow in 2004. He was a Hunterian Professor in 2005. He is past president of the British Hip Society and BOSTAA and has been a council member. He is a member of the Hip Society, the Knee Society, the International Hip Society (currently President) and the International Knee Society . He is also currently President of the European Hip Society.
He has presented and published widely on key aspects of hip, knee and sports surgery including over 700 peer reviewed publications. He leads a clinical research group with interests in the management of soft tissue injuries including hamstrings, prosthetic design and performance, and outcomes measurement after hip / knee injury, degeneration and surgery.

Bob Handley

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, GIRFT Clinical Lead for Adult Orthopaedic Trauma, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Bob Handley is currently National Clinical Lead for GIRFT Adult Orthopaedic Trauma. Bob was a Consultant on the Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford from 1994-2025. He is a Past President of the British Orthoapedic Association President, the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and AOUKI. He co-chaired the NICE guideline development groups on fractures and was a member of the group for hip fractures. He was also an examiner for FRCS T&O for ten years. 

Bob trained in Sheffield, Newcastle, Sunderland and Seattle. After qualifying he worked for the British Antarctic Survey for 3 years.

Karen Harries

Lead Nurse Day Surgery and Pre-operative Assessment, Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Karen is an Australian trained Registered Nurse who has been in the UK since 1995. She is currently the Lead Nurse for Pre-operative Assessment at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Karen has worked in a range of day surgery/23 hour and theatre settings for over 30 years and is passionate about educating and empowering day surgery nurses to be knowledgeable and expert in their extended role. 

Karen is delighted to be part of BADS Council and to be involved in driving and promoting the profile and importance of day surgery. 

Philip Henman

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Philip Henman has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Newcastle upon Tyne since 2001.  He graduated from St Andrews and Manchester Universities and roamed around the country during his training, loosely based in Dundee for specialist training in orthopaedics.  Fellowship training in children’s orthopaedics was divided between Montpellier, Metz, Paris, Adelaide and London before he finally settled to steady employment in the Northeast of England. His consultant post has been a hybrid commitment to orthopaedic trauma care and children’s orthopaedics which come together in an interest in treating children’s musculoskeletal trauma and infections.  He became involved in teaching with AOUK over ten years ago and has been active in teaching on children’s trauma in the UK and overseas since then.

Joanna Higgins

Miss Joanna Higgins is a fellowship trained Hand and wrist, Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon. Graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2005, completing Specialist Training in Wessex in 2018, followed by a subspecialist fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. She was appointed to consultant post at University Hospitals Dorset in 2021. 

Joanna has a very varied professional practice. She is a strong advocate of “Getting It Right First Time”, restoring patients back to a good level of function, honest communication and treating patients according to their individual needs. Always looking for Quality and Service Improvement within Hand and Wrist Surgery has joined a national collaborative called HandsFirst, improving hand and wrist trauma across the UK. She has been the driver behind the Hand Hub at University Hospital Dorset, where a procedure room has been utilised to undertake as much Day Case Local Anaesthetic Procedures as possible. 

Joanna was also successful in becoming British Orthopaedic Association Culture and Diversity Champion for the region, improving workforce culture within the specialty and beyond. This has led to Joanna developing and sitting on various working groups within surgery. These include Ergonomics in Surgery, Parents in Surgery, BSSH Patient Information Group and International Medics in Trauma and Orthopaedic 

Aanchal Jain

Consultant Hand & Wrist Surgeon, Epsom & St Hellier

Aanchal Jain is a dual fellowship trained Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with extensive subspecialty training in hand, wrist and upper limb surgery. After graduating with distinction from Imperial College London, Aanchal obtained her BSc in Management and Medical Sciences with First Class Honours. She completed higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics across major London teaching hospitals. She went on to complete prestigious Hand Fellowships at both the Pulvertaft Hand Unit in Derby and Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, gaining expertise in complex trauma, reconstructive, and wrist arthroscopy procedures. Her clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of hand and wrist pathology, including trauma, degenerative and inflammatory conditions.

A passionate educator, Aanchal has a substantial teaching portfolio. She serves as faculty on national and regional FRCS preparation courses and registrar training sessions across the UK. She has set up highly successful pan-London courses for trainees and has organised registrar teaching programmes, mock viva exams and cadaveric workshops. Professor Antony Johansen

Professor Antony Johansen has worked as a full-time orthogeriatrician in the trauma wards of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for the last 30 years. He co-authored the 2007 British Orthopaedic Association’s ‘Blue Book’ of Fragility Fracture and the 2011 NICE Hip Fracture Guideline (CG124), and from 2013-2026 was Orthogeriatrician lead for the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) at the Royal College of Physicians.

Nick Johnson

Consultant Hand Surgeon

Mr Nick Johnson graduated from the University of Leicester in 2005. He underwent his higher surgical training in the East Midlands South region before obtaining his FRCS (Tr&Orth) in 2014. Following a Fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, he was appointed as a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Derby in 2019.
Mr Johnson has a strong interest in research and teaching and completed a PhD about wrist fracture epidemiology during his higher surgical training along with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. He has published many scientific papers and several textbook chapters, supervises students carrying out research degrees and has been involved with writing national guidance for wrist fracture treatment.

Sarah Johnson-Lynn

Senior Lecturer, Hull York Medical School

Sarah Johnson-Lynn is a Senior Lecturer with Hull York Medical School and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at the James Cook University Hospital, with interests in diabetic foot surgery, foot and ankle trauma and limb reconstruction. She graduated from Newcastle University and completed specialty orthopaedic training in the North East. Fellowships in foot and ankle surgery at Addenbrookes Hospital and in trauma and limb reconstruction at Leeds General Infirmary followed, as well as a British Orthopaedic Research Society travelling fellowship in Asia and Australia. She completed a PhD at Newcastle University, continues to lead clinical and qualitative research projects and teaches on the faculty of several national courses.

Anton Julyan

SAOA President

Dr Anton Julyan is an orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty interest in shoulder surgery and 
reconstructive procedures. He obtained his undergraduate medical degree from the University of 
Pretoria in 1996 and completed his Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery (MMed (Orth)) at 
the same institution in 2006.
Following specialist qualification, Dr Julyan served as a consultant in the Upper Limb Unit at 1 
Military Hospital, where he underwent advanced fellowship-style training under the mentorship 
of Professor Theo le Roux. In 2008, he established his full-time private practice and has since 
accumulated more than 18 years of specialist experience, with a clinical focus on shoulder 
reconstruction, arthroscopy, and joint replacement surgery. He also maintained an active role in 
orthopaedic trauma services for many years.
Dr Julyan has remained committed to academic and professional development through regular 
participation in international congresses, advanced surgical workshops, and international 
observerships focused on shoulder pathology and reconstructive surgery. He is actively involved 
in the education and mentorship of orthopaedic surgeons, particularly in arthroscopic 
techniques and modern shoulder surgery.
His comprehensive surgical training includes extensive experience in primary and revision joint 
arthroplasty, having trained with Professor B.G.P. Lindeque and Professor T.L.B. le Roux across 
the fields of shoulder, knee, hip, and hand surgery. His practice integrates contemporary 
evidence-based techniques with advanced technologies to optimise patient outcomes.
An early adopter of robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, Dr Julyan has more than three years' 
experience in robotic knee arthroplasty and completed advanced MAKO robotic shoulder 
arthroplasty training in the United States in 2025. He currently practises at Pretoria East Hospital, 
which has been established as a recognised training centre for MAKO robotic shoulder 
arthroplasty and augmented reality (ARVIS)-assisted surgical procedures.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr Julyan has made substantial contributions to the advancement of 
orthopaedic surgery in South Africa through professional leadership and service. He currently 
serves as President of the South African Orthopaedic Association (SAOA), having previously 
served on its Executive Committee for eight years. In this capacity, he has played a key role in 
promoting excellence in orthopaedic education, professional standards, and the advancement of 
patient care nationally.

Raghbir Singh Khakha

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Khakha’s NHS practice is based in central London teaching hospital Guy’s and St Thomas’. He has been in consultant practice since 2017 dealing with all elements of knee related injuries ranging from children’s knee injuries right the way through complex redo surgery. 

His philosophy is based on joint preservation surgery, where he routinely performs ligament repairs and reconstructions, meniscal repairs and osteotomy surgery. He regularly accepts referrals from other orthopaedic centres to manage complex primary and redo knee reconstructive surgery. 

Following his successful completion of fellowship in the US at Massachusetts General Hospital in trauma surgery and knee fellowship at North Hampshire Hospitals, Mr Khakha embarked on his consultant career at Guy’s and St Thomas’. Prior to this, he trained on the South-East London Training Rotation. 

He is also Knee Lead Tutor for South London and KSS Trauma and Orthopaedic training programme and is Honorary clinical lecturer at Kings College London, where he is also Patron of the Orthopaedic Society. He has a passion for research as well as education and training, and regularly speaks at international and national meetings on modern minimally invasive knee surgical techniques. 

 

Mr Khakha completed his medical degree at St Georges University Hospital in 2006. He was awarded a BSc with honours at University College London in Orthopaedics and went to complete a Masters in the same field at the University of Brighton. Professor Andrew McCaskie

BOA Research Committee Chair, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Interim Deputy Head of School of Clinical Medicine, Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University of Cambridge & Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation

Professor McCaskie is an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in lower limb surgery e.g. hip arthroscopy and related research. His research aims to develop innovative solutions, particularly regenerative, for patient benefit in musculoskeletal disease. One focus is Osteoarthritis (OA), which affects around 8 million people in the UK alone. The research encompasses a greater understanding of the causes of musculoskeletal disease and the mechanisms of action of therapy. 
 
He is the Director of the Arthritis Research UK Tissue Engineering Centre. The £6 million Centre is based at four sites: Newcastle University, the University of Aberdeen, Keele University/the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Oswestry and the University of York. Funded by a core grant of £2.4 million over five years from Arthritis Research UK with a further £3.4 million pledged by the four participating universities, the centre brings together leading clinicians, engineers and biologists from research and clinical groups. The aim and potential clinical impact is to treat early osteoarthritis by introducing stem cells into damaged joints in conjunction with existing surgical procedures. Prof McCaskie leads the Smart Step consortium (£1.1M) as part of Stage II UK Regenerative Medicine Platform. The aim is to develop cell-free approaches to Osteoarthritis and establish a translational pipeline for their development.

Clare McNaught

President, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

Dr Clare McNaught is President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Harrogate District General Hospital.

Clare graduated from Aberdeen University in 1996 and completed her higher surgical training in Yorkshire. During this time, she was awarded an MD for her research into the impact of probiotics on gut function and aspects of enhanced recovery after surgery.  She was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in 2008. Her clinical interests include colorectal cancer, IBD and the impact of frailty on surgical outcomes. She has always been passionate about training and supporting the next generation of surgeons through her roles as educational supervisor, research mentor and MRCS examiner. In 2014, Clare founded the Younger Fellows' Committee to support surgeons in their transition from Registrar to Consultant practice. She is also the past Editor of Surgeons' News. Clare was elected to RCSEd Council in 2014, was Honorary Secretary from 2020-2022 and Vice President from 2022-2025. She was elected to the office of President in 2025, the first woman to hold this role since 1505

Professor Andy Metcalfe

Professor at Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Andy Metcalfe is a Professor at Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). His clinical practice is in knee surgery including patellofemoral problems, sports surgery, osteotomy and arthroplasty. 

He leads multiple high-impact clinical trials, including RACER-Knee, START:REACTS (both published in The Lancet) as well as currently running trials such as METEOR2 and REPPORT. He was Research Lead for the British Association for Surgery of the Knee 2019-2023, is Secretary of the British Patellofemoral Society, and has been involved in multiple NICE guidelines. He has led the clinical academic training in T&O at Warwick and UHCW for many years, taking people through foundation training, academic clinical fellow posts and PhD fellowships through to Clinical Lecturer posts and beyond. 

Andy now leads a body of work focused on delivering effective innovations to patient care, and is the Chief Medical Officer of a spin-out company supported by Orthopaedic Research UK delivering research on new medical devices called Veriq.

Yusuf Michla

Mr Michla is a consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon at the South Tyneside & Sunderland Foundation Trust. His specialist interest is in shoulder & elbow surgery with complex shoulder & elbow trauma being a particular interest. Mr Michla was appointed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as the Deputy National Director of the Foundation Trainees’ Surgical Societies in 2024. He also acts as a Regional Surgical Advisor for the College.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Michla has a strong interest in undergraduate & postgraduate training and medical education. He has been nominated as the Northern Deanery’s “Trainer of the Year” three times, winning the title once.

For local postgraduate trainees he is a current academic mentor for Northern Deanery core and specialist trainees as well as for the Northern Foundation School, as well as sitting as a committee member of ONTEA, the Northern Deanery specialist training education steering group. At undergraduate level, he holds an honorary senior lecturer post with the University of Newcastle school of medicine, as well as an honorary lecturer role with the University of Sunderland school of medicine.

Piers Mitchell

Mr Piers Mitchell is a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon with qualifications in medicine, biological anthropology, and medical history. He has taught at Imperial College London and the University of Sydney before moving to the University of Cambridge in 2009. From 2011 to 2020, he taught the course Human Evolution and Health in the Department of Archaeology.
He is Co-Editor of the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, serves on the editorial board of Parasitology, and is the founding editor of the Cambridge University Press book series Cambridge Texts in Human Bioarchaeology and Osteoarchaeology. He served as President of the Paleopathology Association from 2015 to 2017, the international organisation for the study of ancient disease.
As a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon , he has made significant contributions to clinical research and guideline development. He has served as Chair of the Research Committee of the British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery, led the BSCOS Consensus Project on Paediatric Musculoskeletal Infection, and has published extensively on the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of paediatric musculoskeletal infections. Fergal Monsell graduated without distinction from the Welsh National School of Medicine. He completed higher surgical training at the University of Manchester and has been a Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol since 2004. He is involved in the management of paediatric patients with a special interest in limb deformity and trauma.
He has made a greater than average contribution to the canon of lower-level evidence and has been awarded degrees at Master and Doctorate level.
He has a longstanding interest in education, is Director of the Avon Centre for Musculoskeletal Education and Projector at the Grand Academy.

Alexander Sheriff Montgomery

Consultant Spine Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust, Spinal Clinical Director at the Royal London

Mr Montgomery set up and led the Spinal Unit at Barts Health for 10 years, turning it in to one of the largest Spinal trauma Unit in the U.K. He has gained a wealth of experience and expertise in this field working in conjunction with the Royal London Trauma, and Orthopaedic teams.
He is now Chair of Spinal Surgery for North East London and Essex region, having set up the Network, and it's team 2 years ago. They have set the standards and governance for the whole region, and continue to grow in influence. Alongside this he and the team at Barts treat patients with common degenerative and complex deformity conditions, as well as TB of the Spine .
Mr Montgomery performs surgery using minimally invasive techniques for anterior, posterior and lateral lumbar and thoracic approaches, as well as anterior and posterior cervical surgery. Mr.Montgomery is honorary senior lecturer at Queen Mary University, and has presented nationally as well as across the globe from the USA to Europe and Australasia. He has regularly been faculty for AO Spine Middle East. He won the best presentation poster at the International Society for Study of the Lumbar Spine, and has featured in Spine News International. He was invited to both the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, and Harborview Hospital in Seattle to present papers.

Rhidian Morgan-Jones

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Rhidian trained in Cardiff at the University of Wales, College of Medicine as it was then, qualifying in 1989. His training rotation was between Oswestry and Stoke-on-Trent and included fellowships in Johannesburg and Sydney. 

Rhidian has spent his Consultant career working on orthopaedic infection and revision knee replacements in Cardiff. He recently ‘transferred’ across the border to work in Colchester and help establish the Regional Revision Knee Network. 

Rhidian has a strong interest in education at all levels and continues to lecture widely. He has had the pleasure of founding and running national knee infection meetings from which he continues to learn from his peers. A personal philosophy, when possible, has always been to organise cross-speciality meetings, which broadens one’s perspective and heightens respect for colleagues in other medical and non-medical areas. This led to being a co-founder of the Bone & Joint Infection Society (BAJIS) and the inaugural President. BAJIS is a true cross-speciality society for all healthcare workers, scientists and industry partners interested in managing orthopaedic infection. 

Now living in Essex, he remains as Welsh as ever but perhaps a little less partisan than before. Professionally and personally, although life continually changes, he could not be happier than at present. 

Rhidian is delighted to be elected as Honorary Treasurer and hopes to contribute and support our Association and the profession in any way he can.

Mark Moroney

President, Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA)

Mark is married to Paula with two sons. He has worked as an Orthopaedic

Surgeon in Ipswich, Queensland since 1999 maintaining a general practice but with a paediatric interest in the public and private sectors. He has always been committed to registrar teaching having been a past Chair of Training for Queensland. He served as an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for 9 years and is a past Secretary of the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland where he also serves on the Board of Fellows at King’s College.

Mark is passionate about Orthopaedic Outreach, maintaining a strong affiliation with the surgeons in Fiji via annual visitations and regular communications. He has previously served on the Outreach Board as an AOA appointment.

His hobbies include ornithology, origami, snow skiing and when time allows, he enjoys trekking with his family which has taken them to places such as Mt. Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp, Langtang (Nepal) and Kokoda (New Guinea). Mark and Paula look forward to catching up with old friends and meeting new ones during their time in London at the British Orthopaedic Association Congress.

Emily Mounsey

Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthoapedic Surgeon , Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Emily is a Consultant at Somerset Foundation Trust. Over the past eight years, she has led the development of the paediatric orthopaedic service across Somerset and works with a brilliant multidisciplinary team. She has a broad elective paediatric practice, including neuromuscular disorders, developmental hip dysplasia, and foot deformities, with a particular interest in neurofibromatosis. She is also a general trauma surgeon with a specialty interest in paediatric fractures, which she honed during a fellowship at SickKids in Toronto.

Alongside her clinical work she is actively involved in national research recruitment and the implementation of evidence-based practice.

Emily attended Cardiff University and completed her orthopaedic surgical training in Peninsula. She holds a higher qualification in patient safety and simulation and continues to place patients at the centre of the care she provides.

Emily is passionate about encouraging diversity and kindness in orthopaedics and holds a role with Bristol University, supporting fifth-year medical students through their final year. She is delighted to be involved with The British Orthopaedic Association.

Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, horse riding, teaching yoga, and spending time outdoors with her husband and three children.

Rajpal S. Nandra

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, specialising in hip preservation, hip arthroscopy and complex hip reconstruction. His practice focuses on the assessment and treatment of hip and groin pain, including sports-related hip injuries, femoroacetabular impingement, labral pathology, hip dysplasia, arthritis and failed hip replacements. He has a particular interest in preserving the native hip joint through arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures, with the aim of delaying or avoiding progression to end-stage arthritis and joint replacement.

Dinesh Nathwani

Mr Dinesh Nathwani is the current President of CAOS UK. He is a Consultant and Hon Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Robotics Lead at Cleveland Clinic London. He has a keen clinical and research interest in technology assisted knee surgery and has used Navigation and Robotics for all his partial and Total knee replacements since being appointed as a substantive Knee Consultant at Imperial College Healthcare in 2004. This was following a fellowship in Knee Navigation techniques in Perth, Western Australia. He is involved in international trials for novel cartilage resurfacing implants, customised and robotically assisted knee replacements. He is a programme committee member of Computer assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) International. He is an Orthopaedic research advisor for the Hamlyn Centre of Robotics at Imperial College and faculty member on several national and international knee reconstruction course teaching surgeons of all grades in Robotic Knee Surgery. He is a reviewer for several Orthopaedic Journals including British Bone & Joint Journal, American Journal of Sports Medicine, The Knee, and Injury.

Paul Nesbitt

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon , Manchester Royal Infirmary

Mr Paul Nesbitt is a Consultant Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Surgeon at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, based at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He graduated MBChB from the University of Manchester in 2010.
His clinical expertise spans circular frame surgery (Ilizarov and hexapod systems), limb lengthening, bone infection, open fractures, non-union and deformity correction, and complex peri-articular trauma. He leads the Transverse Tibial Transport (TTT) service at Manchester and serves as Governance Lead and Regional Unit Lead for Trauma and Limb Reconstruction.
Paul is committed to teaching and research, contributing to the peer-reviewed literature and co-authoring textbook chapters in his field. He teaches on the Manchester Trauma, Orthofix TL Elevate, and Ilizarov courses, helps run the North West Deanery Mock FRCS, and serves as an ARCP panellist.
Outside surgery, Paul is a former competitive junior GB swimmer who remains active in the health and fitness field. Alongside his NHS work, he runs a private clinic with his wife at Etherow Health near Glossop, dedicated to a more holistic approach to patient care. Paul and Olivia live near Manchester with their five children, who keep life busy!

Stephen Ng Man Sun

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Stephen is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, specialising in complex foot disorders, DDH and neurodisability. He studied medicine at University College London and underwent training on the North-west London rotation before completing a paediatric orthopaedic fellowship at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He has also undertaken the Fred Deitz Clubfoot Fellowship. He was appointed as a consultant in 2019.

Anastasios P Nikolaides

Consultant Femoral Fragility Trauma and Lower Limb Arthroplasty Specialist, NHFD Orthopaedic Clinical Lead, Chair European Committee Fragility Fracture Network

Dr Anastasios P. Nikolaides is an internationally recognised Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip trauma, lower limb periprosthetic fractures, fragility fractures, arthroplasty, and complex reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Medical School in 1990, obtained his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Orthopaedics and Trauma in 1998, and completed a PhD in 2008 focusing on polyethylene wear in total knee arthroplasty.

Since January 2020, Dr Nikolaides has served as Consultant Hip Trauma and Lower Limb Arthroplasty Specialist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He led the Birmingham Heartlands Femoral Fragility Fracture Service, one of the largest services of its kind in the UK, managing approximately 1,200 hip and periprosthetic fractures annually. Under his leadership, the service was shortlisted for the 2024 HSJ Award for Clinical Redesign, recognising its innovative approach to fragility fracture care.

A highly respected clinical leader, educator, and researcher, Dr Nikolaides was appointed Co-Chair of the European Committee of the Fragility Fracture Network in 2024 and will become National Hip Fracture Database Orthopaedic Lead for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland from July 2026. He is also Director of the UK’s only Senior Femoral Fragility Fellowship.

Dr Nikolaides holds the position of Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Birmingham and plays a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, trainee supervision, and examiner activities. He became a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators in 2023.

His clinical interests include minimally invasive fracture fixation, complex revision arthroplasty, kinematic alignment and augmented reality navigation in knee replacement surgery. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in research, editorial work, and international professional education in orthopaedic trauma and arthroplasty.

Nick Ohly

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Golden Jubilee University National Hospital

Nick completed postgraduate training in Glasgow and Edinburgh, followed by a hip and knee fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He was appointed as a consultant at the Golden Jubilee in 2014. He runs a specialised elective-only practice focused exclusively on hip and knee arthroplasty, with sub-specialist interests in robotic and computer-assisted surgery, and complex and revision knee arthroplasty.

Kavi Patel

Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma & Limb Reconstruction Surgeon

Kavi is a consultant orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction surgeon at The Royal London Hospital specialising in adult complex trauma, orthoplastics, bone infection, failed fixation, non-union and deformity correction. Having graduated from the Royal Free and University College Medical School, he completed his higher surgical training on the Cambridge rotation following which he undertook two post-CCT fellowships at King’s College Hospital and St George’s Hospital.

Kavi has authored a textbook chapter, multiple peer-reviewed articles, contributed to national guidelines and delivered international podium presentations in his field. He has also completed a full-time Masters in Surgical Science at UCL which culminated in the publication of basic science research.

A keen educator, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, is regular faculty on limb reconstruction/trauma courses and is a Senior Clinical Lecturer/co-director on the Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc at the Blizard Institute. He is the fracture-related infection lead on the UK Bone & Joint Infection Registry and sits on the OTS education committee.

As an Army Reservist, Kavi has an interest in conflict surgery and orthopaedic trauma care in the austere environment having deployed to Ukraine and volunteered in Gaza.

Professor Daniel Perry

Dan is Professor of Children's Orthopaedic Surgeon at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and a NIHR Research Professor.

Dan specialises in Children’s Hip Disease and Trauma. He trained in Liverpool and Warwick, before completing a fellowship at SickKids Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He was the first orthopaedic surgeon to have been awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship.

Dan’s major research interests are in epidemiology and effectiveness research. He has an international portfolio of clinical trials. He has over >£30m (USD $40 million) in research income, including as Chief Investigator on the NIHR British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance (BOSS) Study (Paediatric Hip Disease), NIHR FORCE Study (Simple Wrist Fractures), NIHR SCIENCE Study (Medial Epicondyle Fractures), NIHR CRAFFT Study (Severe Wrist Fractures), NIHR BigBOSS Study (Hip Disease), NIHR BASIS Study (Scoliosis) and the NIHR Odd SOCKS Study (Ankle Fractures). He is currently working Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago (USA) to reproduce UK studies throughout North America, with an NIH R01 grant recently awarded.

Dan supervises several PhD students, and oversees a broad team within the clinical trials unit of biostatisticians, health economists, trial managers and data specialists.

He is a member of the NIHR HTA Commissioning Board and Associate Editor of The Bone & Joint Journal. He also sits on the research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the research committee of BSCOS (British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery).

Sarah Phillips

Sarah is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Limb Reconstruction.  She was appointed as consultant at King’s College Hospital in 1998.

She is Secretary of The British Limb Reconstruction Society.

She was in the Army Reserves for over 30 years retiring in 2021. She deployed  in March 2003 for Op Telic 1 (2nd Gulf War).

She is on the Faculty of the Diploma in Medicine in Conflict and Catastrophe (DMCC)

Sarah is a Trustee of 2 charities – IDEALS and Rebuild. (www.IDEALS.org.uk and www.rebuildcharity.org )

IDEALS was established in 2000 by John Beavis.  Its mission: to relieve poverty, distress and suffering in any part of the world affected by conflict and/or natural disaster.  It has worked in Bosnia-Herzegovia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Lebanon and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Sarah has been involved in helping to establish a Limb Reconstruction Service in Gaza since 2013. IDEALS provided training for orthopaedic surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists as well as providing specialist orthopaedic equipment.  The charity has helped in the treatment of war wounded patients and those injured in 2018-19 border demonstrations.

Since December 2023 IDEALS has been recognised as a specialist Emergency Medical Team (Orthoplastics) and has regularly sent surgical teams to Gaza to treat those injured in the present conflict.  Sarah has made 2 visits during the present war  - her most recent visit was in January 2026.

Greg Pickering

Consultant Hand & Orthopaedic Surgeon

Greg Pickering is a Consultant Hand & Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, including at the National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases.
Mr Pickering completed his higher specialist training in Trauma & Orthopaedics on the Severn (Bristol) Rotation, followed by a National Training Interface Group Fellowship in Hand Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. Mr Pickering was the British Delegate to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand International Travelling Fellowship, a BSSH delegate to the BOA Future Leaders Programme, and has completed the British Diploma in Hand Surgery. Mr Pickering has a particular interest in medical education, and has multiple formal qualifications in this field. He regularly develops and delivers cadaveric surgical training courses, is a sitting member of the BSSH Education Committee, as well as being Specialty Tutor and a named supervisor and trainer of future orthopaedic and hand surgeons.

Rob Poulter

Consultant Hand & Wrist Surgeon, Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr. Rob Poulter is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a decade of experience in the treatment of hand and wrist conditions that impact bony and soft tissues, including carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, skin cancer, and entrapment. He sees private patients at the Ramsay Health Duchy Hospital.

Mr. Poulter graduated from the Royal Free Hospital, School of Medicine, and went on to undertake his basic and specialist orthopaedic training in the Southwest of England. He later gained the opportunity to undertake various sought-after national and international hand and peripheral nerve fellowships, in Nottingham, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Since his Consultant appointment in 2011, Mr. Poulter has centred his practice around clearly communicating with his patients and his colleagues, to ensure patients receive an excellent standard of care from the team, as a whole. Hari Prem

Consultant Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeon, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

Mr Prem graduated from Madras Medical College, India and started his orthopaedic training in 1987 at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. After completing the M.S.Orth. course in 1990, he returned home to Vellore to work as a consultant at Christian Medical College with a special interest in paediatric surgery and limb reconstruction. In 1995 he moved to Australia for advanced training and fellowships and in 1998 he arrived in England with the aim of qualifying for the FRCS Orth, which he completed through training based at the Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals. He completed a Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at Manchester and a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Wrightington.

He started work at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and the Birmingham Children's Hospital in 2005 where he continues at present as a Foot and Ankle surgeon. He has a special interest in Flatfeet in Children and Adults and the Biology and Biomechanics of surgical complications. He enjoys teaching with a focus on patient safety and the well being of surgeons.

Sultan Qasim

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Sultan Qasim is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery in Newcastle. He completed his orthopaedic training in the East Midlands and fellowship training at Wrightington Hospital.

He leads a tertiary service for Charcot Reconstruction and tertiary referral service for complex neurological foot and ankle deformities at Freeman Hospital.

Professor Amar Rangan

Vice President, British Orthopaedic Association

Prof Amar Rangan holds the Mary Kinross Trust and Royal College of Surgeons Chair at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Department of Health Sciences, University of York.

He is a specialist shoulder and elbow surgeon at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Middlesbrough, providing district and tertiary services in his specialty.

He also holds a full professorship with the faculty of medical sciences and NDORMS, University of Oxford.

Amar has held key national leadership roles: President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, trustee of the British Orthopaedic Association, and surgeon member of the National Joint Registry Steering Committee.

Amar is a designated supervisor for HYMS integrated academic training and supervises pre-doctoral and doctoral studentships.

He is fellowship director for the nationally accredited shoulder and elbow fellowship at South Tees Hospitals and is course director for the postgraduate MCh(Orth) programme in Teesside.

Amar leads a programme of clinical and translational research, including NIHR funded multi-centre clinical trials.

He has published widely in trauma and orthopaedics, particularly in shoulder and elbow surgery, where his work has influenced clinical practice, national guidelines, and policy.

He is chair of MedConnectNorth and is a member of the NIHR i4i Challenge Awards Committee.

Janardhan Rao

Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Countess of Chester Hospital, Chester

Mr Janardhan Rao was the Lead Orthopaedic Examiner for the National and International Exam, Chair JCIE T&O since 2020 taking the exam throughout covid. He has been a Senior Intercollegiate Examiner for more than half of his 21 years as a consultant. Also acting as an assessor of all the surgical exams to promote fairness.

He is on the board of the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel which scrutinises orthopaedic implants published data for survival, this ensures a quality rating for implants. He has been the Lead Clinician and Divisional Medical Director in his Trust, innovating the use of a neighbouring hospital spare operating theatre capacity and promoting day case hip and knee replacement. Continuing elective cases during the COVID lockdown.

He is a Senior Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, moving the teaching online and continuing lectures on a weekly basis throughout covid. He also provided teaching for nursing and paramedics via the University of Chester. He is the President of the Chester and North Wales Medical Society, originally founded in 1883.

Mr Rao, originally went to a Quaker school in York before graduating with an intercalated honours degree from the University of St. Andrews. He completed his post graduate surgical training in Cambridge and Norwich. He completed his fellowship at the Rocky Mountain Trauma Centre in Denver before taking up the post of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Chester. He is a Regional Surgical Ambassador for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Sachin Rastogi

Consultant in Pain Management & Anaesthesia, Great North Children’s Hospital

Sachin Rastogi is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne with a specialist interest in paediatric pain management. He trained in Manchester and completed postgraduate anaesthesia and pain training in the North West Deanery, followed by fellowships in paediatric pain and paediatric anaesthesia at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, and a regional anaesthesia fellowship at Sunnybrook Hospital, Canada. He returned to Newcastle in 2013 and went on to establish and lead the paediatric complex pain clinic at the Great North Children’s Hospital, a multidisciplinary service for children and young people with persistent pain. Professor Mike Reed

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Chair, NJR Surgical Performance Committee, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust,

Professor Mike Reed is a full-time trauma and hip and knee joint replacement surgeon. He trained in the North of England and did fellowships in New Zealand. He leads Trauma and Orthopaedics at Northumbria Healthcare, working with a team of 31 talented colleagues. His research focuses on clinical outcomes particularly around short stay surgery as well as infection prevention, diagnosis and management. He has co-developed and commercialised a validated medical device to predict perioperatice risk. Professor Reed is on the steering committee and executive of the National Joint Registry (NJR) and Chaired the Annual Report from 2019-2024. He now leads on Surgical Performance for the NJR, is a trustee for the Orthopaedic Research UK charity and is on the grant awards committee for the National Institute Health and Care Research (NIHR) (i4i PDA). He has led clinical trials for industry and NIHR, and works academically with the University of York.

Benedict Rogers

Orthopaedic Consultant & Honorary Clinical Professor, University Hospitals Sussex

Professor Benedict Rogers is a Consultant in Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery consulting in Surrey and Sussex, with clinical and academic interests on hip and knee surgery, including robotic-assisted sports injuries and trauma. 

A graduate of University of Oxford (Christ Church), St George’s Hospital Medical School (University of London), UCL, University of Portsmouth and University of Toronto. 

Awarded PhD (2017) with thesis entitled “Optimising the Outcomes of Hip and Knee Replacements” 

He is an NHS Consultant at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and an Honorary Clinical Professor at Brighton & Sussex Medical School (University of Sussex).

A keen sportsman, Benedict was awarded an Oxford Blue (Rugby League) and has completed five Ironman Triathlons. He now regularly runs half/full marathons for local charities. 

Benedict undertook two clinical fellowships at world-renowned academic units at University of Toronto: Mount Sinai Hospital & Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. 

He was trained by several eminent surgeons including Professor Allan Gross, Professor Hans Kreder, Professor Marvin Tile, Dr Joseph Schatzker. 

He was awarded the Zane Cohen Fellowship Achievement Award by the University of Toronto; the first time this had been awarded to an orthopaedic surgeon. 

With an extensive and ongoing research portfolio covering basic science and clinical practice, he currently has over 120 publications, over 10 book chapters and over 80 presentations; including several at the British Orthopaedic Association and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, with a number awarded prizes.

Nigel Rossiter

Nigel Rossiter is the President of the Combined Services Orthopaedic Society.  He spent half his career as a Trauma Orthopaedic surgeon in the Army and half in the NHS.  He was one of the people who helped set up England’s Trauma networks, he was the founding President of the OTS, he is a founding fellow of the International OTA and an Emeritus International Member of the OTA.  He has addressed the UN General Assembly on global Trauma issues, has sat on the WHO committee for Trauma, has sat on NICE and the NIHR, and has Chaired an international Trauma charity.  He received an Honorary Fellowship of the BOA in 2023.

Jo Round

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Southampton

Jo Round is a Consultant at University Hospital Southampton, where she specialises in Trauma and Limb Reconstruction.

Alasdair Santini

Alasdair Santini is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Liverpool University Hospitals FT where he specialises primary and revision knee arthroplasty, arthroscopic surgery to the knee and hip arthroplasty. He lives in Cheshire and is married with three sons. He was educated at The Edinburgh Academy and then at The University of Sheffield. His higher training in orthopaedics was on the Mersey Orthopaedic Rotation and involved a year at Wrightington Hospital and a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow sponsored travelling fellowship to visit Dr Leo Whiteside in St Louis, USA. He is the current Treasurer for BASK as well as the President of the Grosvenor Orthopaedic Club and Managing Partner of the Bone and Joint Centre. He is an honorary clinical lecturer at The University of Liverpool and has a number of peer reviewed publications. Alasdair Santini was a keen fencer, having been captain of The University of Sheffield team but currently keeps fit by skiing and coaching junior rugby. Mr Akash Sharma is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, and the current President of CAOS-UK (Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery UK).

Mr Sharma specialises in all aspects of knee arthroplasty, including unicompartmental knee replacement, total knee replacement and complex revision knee reconstruction. He has a particular interest in technology-enabled surgery, personalised alignment strategies and the application of robotics, computer-assisted surgery and artificial intelligence to improve patient outcomes. 
He is an experienced robotic knee surgeon with expertise across multiple robotic and computer-assisted platforms and has performed more than 1,200 robotic knee arthroplasties. Jawad Sultan

I am a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, who specialises in the management of disorders of the knee. My clinical practice encompasses all aspects of knee surgery including the treatment of sports injuries, ligament injuries, arthritis and patella instability. 

I specialise in all aspects of arthritis and joint degeneration, including nonoperative treatment (injections, orthotics, rehab), cartilage regeneration procedures, kKnee re-alignment osteotomies, total and partial knee replacement, customised patient-specific knee (ConforMIS) and robotic knee replacement (Mako). 

For sports knee injuries I offer knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), meniscus repair / transplant, ligament reconstruction, patella (kneecap) dislocation & instability, chondral (joint surface) injuries and cartilage regeneration procedures and overuse conditions eg tendinitis. 

Since completing my training in 2016, I have performed hundreds of knee arthroscopies, replacements (partial and total), ligament reconstructions and osteotomies. I perform complex multi-ligament knee and joint reconstruction surgery at Manchester Royal Informary Major Trauma Centre, and lead the Soft Tissue Knee MDT. 

I completed my specialist surgical training in the North West of England, and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS T&O) in 2016. I undertook prestigious knee fellowships in Harrogate, Cardiff and France, where I worked with world-renowned knee surgeons specialising in partial knee replacements, knee ligaments reconstruction, osteotomies and patellofemoral joint surgery. Following five years as a consultant at Royal Bolton Hospital, I was selected in 2021 to lead the acute knee services at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - Manchester Royal Infirmary, Trafford General Hospital. 

I am experienced in clinical and laboratory research, including the use of gait analysis. I completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University. My dissertation, A New Approach to Prevention of Knee Osteoarthritis, was presented at national and international conferences, and awarded Sir John Charnley and the British Association of Surgeons of the Knee prizes. I have several publications, and numerous presentations at national and international conferences. 

I lead the Soft Tissue Knee MDT at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where I perform complex multi-ligament knee and joint reconstruction surgery. I am the Clinical Governance Lead at Manchester Royal Infirmary Major Trauma Centre. I sit on national BASK committees to produce national guidance for knee surgery. 

I teach medical students at the University of Manchester, as well as on ATLS and knee replacement and trauma courses, and train junior doctors as part of the North Western Deanery Orthopaedic Rotation. Tim Theologis

Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon , Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences / University of Oxford

Mr Tim Theologis has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Oxford since 1996 and a Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford since 1999. His clinical and research work focuses on children with cerebral palsy and neuromuscular disorders.
Tim’s previous research has led to the development of the Oxford Foot Model, a biomechanical model for the study of foot motion during walking. This has been adopted internationally by researchers, clinicians and the motion analysis industry as the standard tool for analysis of foot motion in children and adults. The development of the Oxford Foot and Ankle Children's Questionnaire, a validated measure of foot-related disability, was also an important milestone in the understanding of paediatric foot conditions and their impact on lifestyle.
The 'keyhole' or 'minimally-invasive' technique in performing both bony and soft tissue procedures as part of multi-level surgery in children with cerebral palsy has been developed through research at the Oxford Gait Laboratory. It involved surgical techniques which were used in other conditions in children but had not previously been used in the context of surgery in cerebral palsy.
In 2016 Tim led the development of a Research Committee under the auspices of BSCOS, the British Society of Children's Orthopaedic Surgery. He has led the development of research priorities in children’s orthopaedics at national level, including a James Lind Alliance priorities setting project on lower limb surgery in children with orthopaedic conditions.
Since 2017 Tim has dedicated more time in clinical research in paediatric orthopaedics, focusing on cerebral palsy, clinical outcomes and paediatric osteoarticular infection. He completed the CPinBOSS study and is Chief Investigator in 3 other HTA/NIHR funded multi-centre studies, namely PICBone, SPELL and ROBUST. Tim is also supervising the development of a core outcome set in paediatric orthopaedics, the CELLOS study.

Professor Alex Trompeter

Alex Trompeter works at St George’s University Hospital in London and holds the position of Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at City St George’s University of London. His specific clinical interests are the management of complex fractures, bone infection, non-union, deformity correction and limb lengthening, orthoplastic surgery and delivering the region’s amputation service.

Alex graduated from Guy’s and St Thomas’ medical school in 2003. He completed his specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics in the South West Thames rotation in 2012. He won the Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal for the FRCS examinations in 2011. Alex undertook specialist fellowship training in trauma and limb reconstruction in the UK (Liverpool and Chertsey) and overseas (Calgary, Canada). He was awarded the Braun travelling fellowship to the Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, by the British Orthopaedic Association, and a travelling fellowship to the Oxford Bone Infection Unit by the British Limb Reconstruction Society.

Alex is  actively involved in academic research and is widely published in his field, as well as being a keen surgical educator teaching locally, nationally and internationally. He was previously Training Program Director for the South West London Orthopaedic Rotation. Alex chairs the BLRS Research Committee and is vice chair of the BOA trauma committee and co-chair of the BOA Clinical Standards Committee (responsible for producing BOASTS). In his spare time he enjoys ultra running, gardening, cooking and making salami.

His clinical practice includes caring for elite athletes including Premiership football teams, professional rugby league and union players and Olympic athletes.

Philip Turner has been a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport since 1990 having trained in Manchester and spent time studying in centres in America and Europe.. He was the senior surgeon in the department and continues to specialise in all aspects of knee surgery, having established a tertiary referral unit for complex knee problems from across the North West of England and beyond. His main clinical interests are outcome measures, arthritis of the knee in the younger patient and sports injuries of the knee. He is a founding Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

He was a Council and Executive member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and served as President from 2018 to 2019. He was previously the North West Orthopaedic Training Programme Director, Head of the North West School of Surgery, founding Chair of the Confederation of Post-Graduate Schools of Surgery and Chair of the BOA Training Standards and Curriculum Committee. Philip has been a key member of the Joint Intercollegiate Committee for Examinations where he has been an examiner, assessor and quality assurance lead. He has been involved in surgical education and assessment throughout his career and was awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCS Edinburgh in 2016.

He has been domain clinical lead in the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and founding Chair of the Greater Manchester Orthopaedic Alliance. He holds an Honorary Professorship in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Salford and was elected as a Council member and Trustee of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2019 where he chaired the Professional Standards Committee. Philip was appointed as the Deputy Dean for Accreditation in 2025 and Chairs the Joint Specialty Examinations Committee.

He is proud to have been appointed as a founding trustee of the “DayOne Trauma” charity supporting the care of patients and families who have suffered catastrophic injuries.

Philip was elected as Vice President of the College in 2025.

Professor Henning Windhagen

Henning Windhagen (born 4 March 1965 in Essen) is a German orthopaedic surgeon and trauma surgeon. Since 2006, he has been Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic at the Hanover Medical School (Medizinische Hochschule Hannover) in the Annastift, and in 2014 he served as President of both the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) and the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU). 

Henning Windhagen studied human medicine from 1984 to 1991 at the Philipps University of Marburg and the University of Bern (Switzerland). In 1992, he earned his doctorate at the University of Marburg with a dissertation entitled: 

“Biomechanical Investigations into Acromioclavicular Joint Stabilisation: PDS Fixation versus Wire Cerclage.” 

He subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomechanical Sciences at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, and was a recipient of scholarships from the Else Kröner Fresenius Foundation and the B. Braun Foundation. 

After serving as a resident physician in the Department of Trauma Surgery at Humboldt University Berlin and at the Virchow Hospital of the Charité, Windhagen became a board-certified orthopaedic specialist in 1996 and joined the Orthopaedic Clinic of Hanover Medical School (MHH) as a research associate. He completed his habilitation there in 2001. 

In 2004, he received an additional teaching appointment in biomedical engineering at the University of Hanover. Since 2006, Windhagen has held a full professorship in orthopaedics at MHH and has served as Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic and the Laboratory for Biomechanics and Biomaterials. 

In 2007, he became co-director of the CrossBIT Research Center (Center for Biomaterials, Implant Immunology, and Medical Technology), and in 2008 he took over leadership of OrthoGO (Institute for Orthopaedic Gait and Movement Analysis). 

Since 2009, he has served as Medical Managing Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic of MHH at the Annastift. In addition, since 2012 he has been a member of the board of the Lower Saxony Center for Implant Research and Development (NIFE).

Professor Karina Wright

Professor in Orthopaedics and Tissue Engineering at Keele University, based within The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. She is Director of Keele University’s Centre for Regenerative Medicine Research and leads translational research focused on developing and evaluating biological therapies for orthopaedic patients.
