Alwyn Abraham

Training Programme Director T&O, Consultant (Adult Trauma / Paediatric Orthopaedics), University Hospitals of Leicester

Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. The highs and lows of working in the NHS notwithstanding he remains a committed clinician, HST TPD for T&O, trainer and FRCS examiner. Clinically, he particularly enjoys the challenge of salvaging infected, traumatised, and deformed limbs in his chosen field of Limb Reconstruction. Unusually for an orthopod, he is committed to quality communication and the acceptance of human factors in medical teams. He lists an eclectic mix of influences in this regard such as Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman's Masterpiece Thinking, Fast and Slow, but equally, The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. His support of the marginalised has driven his enthusiasm for several interesting projects. This has included his advocacy of CSTs as Training Programme Director, the genesis of a Trust Foundation Doctors Programme for Internationals Medical Graduates and the creation of a Trust registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics culminating in CESR. Alwyn is particularly proud of his role as the co-founder of the Leicester Gondar Orthopaedic Partnership, conceived in 2017. This is a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester, University of Leicester, and the University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia). In collaboration with Rotary International USD 200k was raised and has led to a partnership to develop orthopaedic infrastructure in Northern Ethiopia where up to 7 million people are without the very basics of orthopaedic care.Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. Bayode Adisa

Associate Director, Regulatory, ABHI

Bayode has over 17 years' strategic and hands-on experience in the medical devices sector, including 13 years with the UK regulator of HealthTech, MHRA.

Previously, as Head of Regulatory Affairs at Real Digital International Limited, Bayode led the regulatory function for a portfolio of devices including procedure packs, specimen collection devices and kits. She oversaw registrations and post-market surveillance, while acting as the Person Responsible for Regulatory Compliance (PRRC) for the company.

At MCRA, she provided expert regulatory advice on EU and UK legislation, delivered UDI implementation strategies and helped clients meet global UDI requirements. Earlier, as

Devices Data and Surveillance Strategy Manager at the MHRA, she led on UDI requirements for the future UK Medical Devices Regulations and built strategic partnerships with other government agencies, device registries and key industry stakeholders.

Bayode began her career in post-market surveillance, playing a key role in MHRA investigations into BIA-ALCL, PIP breast implants and metal-on-metal hip replacements.

She holds a BSc in Biomedical Materials Science from the University of Nottingham and an MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Irrum Afzal

Irrum Afzal is a graduate of Imperial College London and a recipient of the National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA) Director’s Award. In addition to her academic qualifications, Irrum holds both PRINCE2 Practitioner and Foundation certifications, demonstrating strong project management expertise. With experience in both the NHS and the private healthcare sector, Irrum has contributed to a range of digital health transformation initiatives. She brings a unique blend of research and operational insight, enabling her to effectively manage multidisciplinary teams and deliver high-impact healthcare, research, and quality improvement projects.

Irrum holds multiple positions of national responsibility, reflecting her commitment to healthcare leadership, innovation, and advancing high-quality, patient-centred care. Her positions of responsibility include Vice Chair of Research and Innovation for the NOA, Professional Member of the Research Ethics Committee for the Health Research Authority (HRA), Research Committee Representative for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA), and BOSTAA Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Lead, Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel Member. Irrum is a Non-Executive Board Member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF). She also plays an active role in the Imperial College Alumni Service.

Her interests include Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), Evidence-Based Medicine, and Artificial Intelligence. Irrum has published in various peer-reviewed journals, frequently presents at national and international meetings, and is a reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal.

Nate Ahearn

Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant, Knee Surgery, South Devon and Torbay NHS Trust

Nathanael Ahearn is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Torbay Hospital. His practice encompasses general orthopaedic trauma, with an interest in periarticular and periprosthetic fractures around the knee, and an elective practice focused exclusively in all aspects of knee surgery. He balances a predominantly joint preservation soft tissue knee practice with primary arthroplasty.  
 
He is a keen trainer with an interest in medical education, having completed a PG Cert in Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals, and is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators. He is currently the OTS Education Committee Chair. 
 
After medical school at Imperial College, he completed surgical training in the Severn Deanery. Having completed fellowship in Sydney he enjoys maximising the outdoor lifestyle and work life balance achieved by living in the South West.

I studied medicine at Imperial College, graduating with a Distinction in Surgery. I was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005 and the Fellowship (FRCS) in 2011.

I have undertaken a Masters in Medical Education (for which I was awarded a Distinction) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree. I have given over 100 international presentations, and have received multiple prizes and awards.

I completed my subspecialty fellowship in all aspects of knee surgery (sports injuries, trauma and joint replacement) at the renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

I was also awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship and spent 6 months in international centres of orthopaedic excellence across the USA.

I am appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knees at Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the busiest hospitals in the country, which receives complex tertiary referrals from a broad area.

I am also appointed as a Reader in Orthopaedic Surgery & Surgical Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry. I am an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

I am the Training Programme Director for the prestigious Royal London Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery rotation and a member of the Executive Committees of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the Specialist Advisory Committee to the Joint Committee on Surgical Training.

Oday Al-Dadah

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, South Tyneside Hospital & Newcastle University

Oday Al-Dadah is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tyneside Hospital with a special interest in reconstructive knee surgery and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. He’s from Ayrshire and graduated from Dundee University Medical School. He completed his higher surgical training as a specialist registrar on the Cambridge training programme. He then completed sub-specialist fellowship training at the Professorial Knee Unit in Southampton and also the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol. 

His consultant practice includes all aspects of knee surgery ranging from sports injuries to joint replacement surgery. Arthroscopic cartilage and meniscus surgery ranging from meniscectomy and meniscal repair right through to allograft meniscus transplant and cartilage transplant surgery of the knee. His ligament surgery armamentarium includes anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction as well as medial collateral ligament and postero-lateral corner reconstruction. For young adult patients with arthritis he performs peri-articular knee realignment osteotomies including high tibial osteotomy and distal femoral osteotomy. He performs a high number of partial knee joint replacements using minimally invasive techniques encompassing medial and lateral uni-compartmental knee replacement, patello-femoral joint replacement and segmental bi-compartmental knee replacement. He led and developed the highly successful and innovative day case joint replacement programme at his hospital. He has considerable experience in complex primary and revision knee arthroplasty. He also has an interest in complex knee trauma including peri-articular and peri-prosthetic knee fractures and knee dislocations. He is experienced in paediatric knee surgery too. He also performs surgery for patella instability including medial patello-femoral ligament reconstruction, tibial tuberosity transfer and trochleoplasty. 

Oday Al-Dadah completed his Doctorate Thesis on the topic of cruciate ligament and meniscus surgery during his research fellowship within his time as a specialist registrar. He has presented his research both nationally and internationally and has won numerous prizes and gold medals for best podium presentations. He has many publications in peer reviewed journals. He has successfully supervised many research fellows at Newcastle University most of whom achieve distinctions and merit level awards for their thesis. He is the Editor-in-Chief of The Knee journal where he has the privilege of working with an international editorial board of esteemed academic knee surgeons from all over the world. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and privileged to be an executive board member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK). 

Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital & Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Fazal Ali did his Orthopaedic training in Sheffield, UK with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee, both in adults and in children. He is a consultant at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he has helped set up a national referral service for knee problems in children which is the premier service in the UK that regularly manages sporting injuries and  congenital knee disorders. He co-convenes the biennial International Kids Knee conference which brings together surgeons form all over the world. 

He is a former OrthopaedicTraining Programme Director (TPD) for South Yorkshire and is presently the President of BOSTAA (Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association).  

He has published more than 70 scientific papers and chapters and given numerous invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ (Cambridge University Press) which is a best-selling orthopaedic text in its 3rd edition and was recently published in Chinese. He is co-editing two further textbooks, ‘Postgraduate Orthopaedic Clinics’ (CRC Press), due to be released in 2026 and ‘Child and Adolescent Knee Surgery’ (Springer) which is in progress. 

Fazal Ali was voted ‘Trainer of the Year’ on six occasions across 2 training rotations. As such, he was given a life-time award for training by South Yorkshire in 2014. In 2017 he was again honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation with the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.  

He serves as a senior examiner and assessor for the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examination. He is past-Chair of  Section 1 exam of all ten surgical specialities and sits on the JCIE and T&O Boards. He is also Chair of the International FRCS exam and serves on the board of examiners in multiple developing world countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training and care in those countries.

Deborah Alsina MBE

Deborah Alsina MBE is the Chief Executive of Arthritis UK, the UK’s leading arthritis charity. Abtin Alvand

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC)

Abtin is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford (NDORMS). He graduated from University of London (Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine). After completing basic surgical training on the prestigious Hammersmith surgical rotation, he began higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme in 2008. He took three years out of programme to undertake a PhD (DPhil) as the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit Fellow at the University of Oxford. His DPhil was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”. Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was then appointed in Oxford as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon. Clinically, he has a specialist interest in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, revision knee arthroplasty, and peri-prosthetic joint infection.

Annunziato (Ned) Amendola

Past President, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)

Ned Amendola, MD, is currently the Virginia Flowers Baker Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chief of the Sports Medicine Division, and Executive Director of the James R. Urbaniak Sports Sciences Institute at Duke University. In addition, he is the Head Team physician and Chief Medical Officer for Duke Athletics.

Dr Amendola earned his medical degree and completed his orthopedic residency at the Western University in London, Ontario. He completed post-graduate fellowships in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Foot and Ankle, and Hand Surgery. Dr Amendola is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He began his career on faculty where he trained at Western University in London Canada, where he became Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital, moved to the University of Iowa in 2001 as Director of Sports Medicine, and was a tenured Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery until 2015. While at Iowa, Dr. Amendola received the Kim and John Callaghan Endowed Chair in Sports Medicine in 2009. He has been a tenured Professor of Orthopaedic surgery at Duke University since 2015.

Dr. Amendola has been involved as a member and a leader in many orthopedic and sports medicine organizations, currently the immediate Past President of the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons (AAOS). He is Past President for the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of OREF, AAOS, ABOS, AOSSM, AANA, ISAKOS, and Past President of the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr Amendola has focused on improving the quality of orthopedic care through clinical practice, education, and research. He has always appreciated teaching and learning from many students, residents, and fellows over his career. He has received numerous peer-reviewed grants, and published over 400 peer-reviewed articles, as well as authored an extensive number of book chapters and editor of 8 textbooks in sports medicine, foot and ankle, and arthroscopy. Dr Amendola has participated as a member of the MOON and MARS multicenter research groups. Dr. Amendola has earned numerous research related awards including Kappa Delta Award from the AAOS in 2012 and 2019 and Excellence in Research Award, Cabaud and O’Donohue awards from the AOSSM; The Roger Mann and Leonard Goldner Awards form AOFAS ; ISAKOS Achilles Sports medicine Research Award. In 2025 he was inducted into the AOSSM Sports Medicine Hall of Fame .

Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Anand is a Consultant knee surgeon with a tertiary referral practice at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.  

He is a founder member and Executive Director of the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA), and serves as Executive Editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. He is currently Academic Secretary for BOSTAA, and an Executive Member of the British Patellofemoral Society (BPFS). He is immediate Past-President of BIOS. 

He has played a leading role in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstruction and has contributed to guidance on patellofemoral disorders and arthroscopic meniscal surgery.

Neil Ashwood

Consultant Upper Limb Surgeon, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton

Professor Neil Ashwood is a Consultant Upper Limb Surgeon at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and a dedicated mentor in the orthopaedic community. Holding a Master of Medical Education (MMedEd) alongside his clinical qualifications, he has dedicated much of his 20-year consultant career to training the next generation of surgeons.

Professor Ashwood has previously served as an Associate Medical Director and Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons. He currently shapes training standards as an educational supervisor for the Derby Upper Limb Fellowship, an FRCS (Orth) examiner, and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons Specialty Board in Edinburgh. Based academically at the University of Wolverhampton, his research interests range from ambulatory trauma pathways to bioengineering. He is in the process of undertaking a PhD in trauma registries. He is highly proactive in guiding trainees and budding researchers to bring their clinical and academic ideas to fruition. He sits on the research committee of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and is its current treasurer.

Naomi Assame

Deputy Director of Safety and Learning, NHS Resolution

Naomi joined NHS Resolution in December 2019 and is the Deputy Director of Safety and Learning.

Having graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2000 with a BSc Hons in Human Movement Science and Physical Education she went on to qualify as a nurse in 2003. Naomi started her nursing career in General Surgery at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds where she later became a Surgical Nurse Practitioner based within the hospital’s Emergency Department.

Naomi qualified as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in 2011 and has worked in both General Surgery at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the King Street Walk-in-Centre in Wakefield.

Prior to joining NHS Resolution, Naomi was the Clinical Governance Lead for Local Care Direct, a community owned provider which delivered the Out of Hours GP service for West Yorkshire as well as three Urgent Treatment Centre’s, a Walk-in-Centre and Emergency Department Streaming.

Naomi has always had a passion for patient safety whether it be through development of the workforce, service improvement or extracting learning from patient safety events. Between 2012 and 2022, Naomi taught on the MBChB programme at Leeds University and played a key role in delivering the patient safety strand of the curriculum. Education and research remain Naomi’s special interests. Naomi is currently assisting Loughborough University with the delivery of the patient safety syllabus training and is undertaking a PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Anouska Ayub

Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health

Anouska is a Paediatric T&O Consultant at the Royal London Hospital.  She has a particular interest in education, with an MSc (MedEd) and is on the BSCOS Education Committee.

Morgan Bailey

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Southampton Children's Hospital

Morgan Bailey completed a paediatric orthopaedic fellowship at University Hospital Southampton. She also completed a research fellowship for the British Association for Surgery on the Knee, with a focus on patellofemoral pathology, for which she was awarded the BASK President's Award. She works between University Hospital Southampton and Portsmouth University Hospitals as part of a paediatric orthopaedic hub and spoke practice. She has a special interest in all paediatric and adolescent knee pathology and provides a paediatric acute knee service across both sites. 

She is a Trustee for the injury prevention charity Power up to Play, as well as sitting on a national working group for injury prevention. She is the Chair for the Women’s ACL Orthopaedic Steering Group. She has a passion for injury prevention in children and young women, and gender parity in the diagnosis and management of ACL injuries. 

Emily Baird

Consultant in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgery, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.

She is the Chair of the Education Committee of The British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Faculty Member for Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons and Tutor for the MSc in Patient Safety and Human Factors.

She lives in Edinburgh with her husband and two young boys, and likes to dance and run!

Sunil Bajaj

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust

Mr Sunil Kumar Bajaj is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist expertise in Foot & Ankle Surgery and Paediatric Orthopaedics. He completed his orthopaedic training in London through the South East Thames Orthopaedic Training Programme based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, followed by advanced fellowships at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He has also undertaken international travelling fellowships in Switzerland and the Netherlands, focusing on advanced foot and ankle surgery and arthroscopy.

A Gold Medallist in medical school, Mr Bajaj has combined a distinguished clinical career with a longstanding commitment to orthopaedic education, training, research, and academic publishing, including textbook chapters in leading references such as Mercer’s Textbook of Orthopaedics.

Mr Bajaj has been an active member of the British Indian Orthopaedic Society for over 15 years and has served the Society in several leadership roles, including Education Committee Member, Treasurer, and Education Secretary. He currently serves as President Elect of the Society.

Alex Baker

Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Royal Preston Hospital

Alex has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal surgeon since 2011 based at Royal Preston Hospital. The regional Major Trauma Centre and Spinal Hub, the hospital serves a catchment area of over 1.4 million people. He undertook all aspects of adult spinal surgery including deformity (scoliosis) surgery and complex spinal trauma.

Meg Baker

Meg is a South Yorkshire ST5 in Trauma and Orthopaedics and currently serves as President of BOTA. She has long demonstrated a strong commitment to medical education, beginning with the establishment of a society aimed at supporting local medical students to CSTs aspiring to enter orthopaedics. Her work has spanned exam and interview preparation, as well as broader mentorship initiatives. More recently, she has played a key role in developing the Yorkshire Educational Surgeons Collaborative, a network that brings together surgeons with a shared passion for education to collaborate, support one another, and advance educational programmes and research.

In addition to her regional and national work, Meg is also a Resident Co-Chair for the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE) in Canada, where she contributes to the conference programme development and supports the organization's ongoing work.

Paul Banaszkiewicz

Paul Banaszkiewicz is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty. He graduated from University of Glasgow, completed basic surgical training in the Merseyside Deanery, and undertook specialist registrar training on the North East of Scotland training programme.

He is currently a Trustee of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and Chair of the BOA Education and Careers (EdCar) Committee, leading initiatives focused on professional development, mentoring, workforce support, and equity of opportunity across orthopaedics. He has helped develop national educational programmes including the BOA–BODS Clinical Directors course, UKITE, Ortho Update and Extended Clinical Team initiatives at BOA Congress.

Paul is Editor of the Journal of Trauma and Orthopaedics (JTO) and co-leads the TENDON study evaluating musculoskeletal education within UK medical schools. He has a particular interest in differential attainment, widening participation, and improving access to mentorship and career development within surgical training.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, and holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from Newcastle University. He also serves as an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC) member and Quality Assurance Assessor for the RCSEng.

As Visiting Professor at Northumbria University, Paul helps bridge academic research with practical clinical orthopaedic practice. He has supported the BOA Futures Leadership Programme, BOA Travelling Fellowships, and the educational activities of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA). He is also lead editor and author of three internationally recognised FRCS (Tr & Orth) textbooks, which have received several BMA Book Awards.

Having had Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) for most of her life, Rebecca co-founded the charity ‘Juvenile Arthritis Research’, which supports many families affected by the condition, where she is the lead on family support and communications. Rahul Bhattacharyya

Professor Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at Ross

Hall Hospital, Glasgow. His NHS base is at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals. He is Visiting Professor at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (knee surgery biomechanics research). He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and University of Glasgow. He is member of the executive committee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).
His clinical interests are focused entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries with experience in treating elite level athletes. This includes meniscal repair and meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and knee cap (patella) stabilisation surgery. He also treats patients with arthritis with a focus on knee joint preservation wherever possible.

Prof Bhattacharyya graduated with Honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Sheffield in 2009. He completed specialist training in orthopaedics in the West of Scotland, Glasgow. He then undertook a further sub-specialty fellowship in sports knee surgery with the internationally renowned Mr Tim Spalding and Mr Pete Thompson at Coventry, UK. Here he was trained in all aspects of modern, cutting edge sports knee surgery and is one of the few surgeons in Scotland trained to treat meniscal deficiency with Meniscal Allograft Transplantation. He has been awarded the prestigious British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) travelling fellowship in 2023. With this award, he has visited international centres of excellence in sports knee surgery in London Ontario, Canada and Stanford University, USA. This has enabled him to gain further insight into the latest cutting edge techniques used in knee surgery in world leading centres and being able to offer this to his patients in the UK.

Prof Bhattacharyya pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery which led to multiple academic publications and presentations. He has been nominated by the Royal College of Surgeons, England, for innovation in surgical education and for the president’s medal in teaching innovation by Imperial College London for his work in this field. He also has a keen interest in biomechanics research investigating innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation and clinical research ensuring patient outcomes are evaluated to deliver the highest standards of care.

Tim is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and was appointed National Director for Clinical Improvement and Elective Recovery for NHS England in November 2022. He is Chair of the GIRFT programme and leads the roll out of GIRFT methodology across all surgical and medical specialties.

Tim was appointed to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital as a consultant in 1992. His specialist interests are in orthopaedic oncology as well as surgery to the hip and knee. He was medical director at the RNOH for 15 years, ensuring a re-build, and was president of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2014.

He is also chair and national lead of the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) and Honorary Colonel of 202 (Midlands) Field Hospital RAMC.

He was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List for services to the surgical profession.

Simon Britten

Vitty Bucknall

Miss Bucknall trained in Birmingham before further graduating from the University of Dundee with honours in Orthopaedic Sciences. Following this, Miss Bucknall joined the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Programme where she completed her higher surgical training. 

Miss Bucknall went on to complete her fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Alder Hey where she joined the team as a consultant. 

During training, Miss Bucknall received a number of national prizes for research and education and was awarded the Scottish national prize for best trainee. Miss Bucknall has served as President to the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and has sat as council on the boards of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Intercollegiate Royal Colleges of Surgeons and the Joint Committee of Surgical Training. 

Miss Bucknall is avid about surgical education and delivers both international and national conferences and teaching as well as being a nationally invited guest speaker. As a member of the Selection Design Group, Miss Bucknall continues to organise national recruitment to orthopaedic training.

Helen Chase

Helen studied medicine at UCL, obtaining an intercalated BSc in Physiology and Pharmacology. She was part of the East Anglian region for her speciality orthopaedic training, gaining her FRCS in 2015.

Salma Chaudhury

BOA Council Member, Consultant Shoulder &Elbow Surgeon

Salma is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospital Trust who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow trauma, sports injuries and shoulder replacements. She is triple fellowship trained from international recognised centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, and spent a year during training at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She was awarded the BESS Travelling Fellowship. Her Trauma and Orthopaedics higher surgical training was completed in Oxford, and she studied medicine at Cambridge University. 

Salma is committed to producing the highest quality research to offer patients the best evidence-based, compassionate care. She was awarded a PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery from Oxford University, for her studies of rotator cuff failure and repair strategies to improve healing. To date she has been awarded £450,000 in research grants, including an ORUK early career research fellowship, and has published widely. She is the associate editor for Bone and Joint Journal 360, and was previously the social media editor for Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently sits on the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Research Committee and was previously Executive Committee member for British Orthopaedic Research Society. 

Teaching has always been important to Salma and she was the co-director of orthopaedic teaching for Oxford University undergraduate medical students for 4 years. She has taught widely on courses such as the Oxford University Orthopaedic MSC course, shoulder and elbow cadaveric courses in Cambridge and ORUK FRCS Revision courses. She has regularly lectured internationally and nationally, including teaching in China and Palestine.

Nick Clement is a Consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and is a Visiting Professor at Sunderland University. He is also the network clinical research lead for orthopaedics for the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland and is an NIHR Senior Investigator. Nick's clinical practice focuses on primary hip and knee arthroplasty and hip fracture care. Julie Craig is the SAS representative on the BOA education & careers committee. 

She works as an Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. 

Julie graduated from Queen’s University in Belfast, and has since completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Education at Queen’s University, and a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. She is now an undergraduate educational lead for fractures for Queen’s University Belfast. 

She teaches quality improvement and leadership skills to doctors in the Belfast Trust as part of the QI faculty. 

Julie has a special interest in clinical data analysis and project design and is the Belfast Trust’s specialty improvement lead for their fracture inpatient database. She is also the Northern Ireland representative on the NHFD advisory group and a member of the RCP’s FFFAP committee. 

Julie’s publications include peer-reviewed journals and chapter contributions to a trauma and orthopaedic nursing textbook. She has received prizes for Best Presentation at the British Trauma Society, Best Abstract at the Irish Hip Fracture Database Annual Meeting, the Bone and Joint Journal Prize, and a “highlight paper" at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

Chris Crome is a Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. His specialist interests consist of hip arthroplasty, revision hip arthroplasty, lower limb trauma and limb reconstruction, including limb lengthening, non-union, deformity correction and orthoplastics.

Chris graduated from St. George’s Hospital Medical School in 2011, before completing Foundation Training in Aberdeen, and Core Surgical Training in Sussex. He completed his higher Orthopaedic Training in the West of Scotland, before undertaking fellowships at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, and the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Chris is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the British Limb Reconstruction Society and sits on the Surgical Education Board for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He currently coordinates the post CCT Fellowship Programme at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Sir Paul Curran

Professor Sir Paul Curran

Sir Paul was appointed Chair of the National Joint Registry in May 2022.  President of City, University of London from 2010 to 2021, he served previously as Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton.  A former academic at the Universities of Sheffield, Reading and Swansea, a NASA research scientist at Ames California and advisor to the European Space Agency, his research on environmental Earth observation has focused on climate change.

He is Chair of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a Director of the Universities Superannuation Scheme and President of the Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Society.  He was Chair of the national Review Body on Doctors’ & Dentists’ Remuneration, Universities & Colleges Employers Association and The Conversation UK and was also a Member of the Natural Environment Research Council, Quality Assurance Agency, London Higher and Universities UK.

Sir Paul holds the degrees of BSc (Sheffield), MBA (Southampton), PhD and DSc (Bristol), Honorary DSc (Grand École ESCP, Paris & Peter the Great University, St Petersburg) and was Knighted in the 2016 New Year Honours for ‘services to higher education’.

Professor Edward Davis is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Service Lead for Arthroplasty at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, and Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham. He specialises in primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery and is internationally recognised for his expertise in robotic-assisted surgery, computer navigation and advanced joint replacement techniques.

Professor Davis graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School and completed his orthopaedic training in the West Midlands, followed by a specialist fellowship in revision hip and knee arthroplasty in Toronto, Canada. He holds an MSc in Trauma, a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education and FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics).

His clinical and academic interests focus on improving outcomes in hip and knee replacement surgery through the development and application of new technologies, including computer-assisted surgery, robotics and data-driven approaches to patient care. He has played a leading role in the development of navigation and robotic systems within orthopaedics and is widely invited to lecture, teach and demonstrate these techniques nationally and internationally.

Alongside his clinical practice, Professor Davis is actively involved in research, education and training, serving as Head of Academy at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and contributing to the education of medical students, trainees and orthopaedic surgeons.

Sebastian Dawson-Bowling

Sebastian specialises in all aspects of lower limb surgery, especially primary and revision hip and knee replacement, and sports injuries. He also works within the Royal London Hospital major trauma service.

He was Clinical Network Director for the Barts Hospital group and North East London ICS from 2017-2022, during which time he led development of the regional elective orthopaedic centre, also researching and implementing development of the accelerated post-surgical patient recovery.

Following undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, he undertook specialist surgical training on the Guy's and St. Thomas's rotation, at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore) and the Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). He holds Master’s degrees in Medical Law and Musculoskeletal  Science. He has co-authored three textbooks; as well as has contributing chapters to other volumes on orthopaedics, trauma and medical law. He frequently acts as an expert witness in litigation cases.

He sits on the editorial board for Bone& Joint 360, the National Joint Registry implant scrutiny committee, the Council of the BOA and is an examiner for the FRCS(Tr&Orth). His interest in orthopaedic basic science has led to collaboration with colleagues from across Europe on a novel hip prosthesis design.

Alexander Dodds

Mr Alexander Dodds BSc (Hons), MBBCh, MSc, MD (Res), FRCS (Tr and Orth) is a nationally regarded UK Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, and specialist Knee and Hip surgeon. Mr Dodds has served on the BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) executive team from 2017- 22, responsible for driving best practice in patient care across the UK. His first-class surgical practice is underlined by his world renowned research work, for which he was awarded an MD (Res) from Imperial College London.

Sukhdeep K Dulai

Dr. Dulai is a Full Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta and a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Stollery Children’s and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospitals in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She is a founding member and past president of the Canadian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society, a former Director of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation and the immediate Past-President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.

She completed medical school and a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Alberta followed by fellowships in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (Sydney, Australia) and B.C. Children’s Hospital (Vancouver, BC) and earned a Master of Health Science in clinical epidemiology at the University of British Columbia. She is the Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery fellowship director at the U of A. Her clinical interests are limb deformities, hip dysplasia and neuromuscular disorders.

She is co-chair of the Paediatric Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation medicine Research Team of Alberta (PORRTAL), the orthopaedic lead of the U of A Paediatric Developmental Hip Dysplasia study group and a member of the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI). Along with a focus on improving pediatric orthopaedic care for underserved populations and children with complex orthopaedic conditions such as cerebral palsy, she has a keen interest in the development and advocacy of initiatives which contribute to the development of healthier and more sustainable surgical practices and health systems, thereby improving patient care overall.

I enjoy writing and have contributed to numerous book chapters and authored many papers. As BOA President in 2023, I was at the forefront of developing and maintaining innovative and sustainable solutions for training, research and clinical care with diversity, inclusion and equity at the forefront of our plans: but all these do require engagement! Ananth Ebinesan

Jonathan Evans

Jonathan Evans is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University of Exeter and Consultant hip surgeon at the Exeter Hip Unit. Having completed his doctorate at the University of Bristol, he now works on the data analysis team of the National Joint Registry (NJR). His research interests include Post-operative Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures (POPFF) and he is currently developing a Core Outcome Set for POPFF in preparation for trials in this area. He is working towards securing funding for an international collaborative RCT investigating the management of Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI), the ROADMAP trial. He is also working to develop methods to assess the environmental impact of health technologies and embed this within both trials and observational research such as the NJR.

Mr Luke Farrow is a Clinical Academic and Honorary Senior Orthopaedic Trainee based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Jamie Ferguson

Jamie Ferguson is a highly respected Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Oxford Limb Reconstruction and Infection Clinic, with a specialised focus on limb reconstruction. As a key member of the Bone Infection Unit in Oxford, Mr Ferguson welcomes referrals from across the UK and internationally, bringing his extensive expertise to a diverse patient population. He works as a Limb Reconstruction Consultant, based in the Bone Infection Unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, UK. Here he works as part of a multidisciplinary team managing complex bone infection of various aetiologies, including haematogenous osteomyelitis, fracture related infection, and infected non-union.  The Bone Infection Unit is unique in the UK as it includes a dedicated inpatient ward, admitting cases with bone infection from across the country.  The ethos of the unit is to aim to undertake single stage infection surgery, often including orthoplastic reconstruction as a single operation.  

He previously worked in the Major Trauma Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and continues to support a multidisciplinary team meeting for the discussion of cases suspected of having fracture related infection in the trauma department.  

He undertook his surgical training in Oxford and undertook a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to the Ilizarov Institute in Kurgan, Russia.  He was also awarded the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society 2018 Fellowship to the United States, visiting The Hospital for Specialist Surgery in New York, The Cleveland Medical Center, The Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He spent a year at the Beit Cure International Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi on a Furlong Fellowship treating cases with complex bone infection.  

His main areas of interest include the management of complex long bone infection, fracture related infection diagnosis and treatment, and the management of segmental bone defects. He has published extensively on several aspects of infection management, including Ilizarov limb reconstruction techniques in bone infection, dead space management in osteomyelitis, local antibiotic carriers, and the diagnosis of fracture-related infection. His collaboration on histological diagnosis of infection contributed to the International Consensus Definition of Fracture Related Infection.  

He is a regular invited speaker, both nationally and internationally, on the treatment of bone infection, limb reconstruction techniques and fracture related infection.

Kishan Gokaraju

Kishan Gokaraju is an established trauma and orthopaedic consultant at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with a specialist interest in upper limb surgery. 
He is triple fellowship trained, from shoulder to finger, with specialist training in Brisbane, Sheffield and Coventry, all level-1 trauma centres with high-volume, high-complexity surgery. 
His practice includes general trauma as well as specialising in shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand surgery, treating both trauma and elective pathology.

Mel Grainger

Having graduated from the University of Manchester Medical School in 1992, Mr Grainger undertook basic surgical training in the NorthWest before starting specialist orthopaedic training in the West Midlands where he developed his passion for spinal surgery. A joint neurosurgical/orthopaedic spinal fellowship in Liverpool preceded his appointment as a consultant spinal surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 2004.

In 2018 he moved to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, one of the busiest spinal trauma units in the country. He has a specialist interest in spinal oncology, in particular primary sarcoma surgery on which he has lectured and taught extensively. He was Clinical Service Lead at the ROH for 9 years and is the Clinical Service Lead for spinal neurosurgery at QEHB 

Andrew Gray

President Elect for the UK Orthopaedic Trauma Society, James Cook University Hospital

Andrew Gray's main orthopaedic specialist interest is trauma. He is based at James Cook University Hospital major trauma centre; current president elect for the UK Orthopaedic Trauma Society (Orthopaedic Trauma Society) and a trustee for the British Orthopaedic Association.  He completed his medical and orthopaedic training in Glasgow, Oxford and Edinburgh, finishing an MD and also a year's trauma fellowship in Calgary. Mr Gray has been a major trauma consultant for 17 years and the lower limb trauma editor for the journal 'Injury' 2014-2021.  Over the past 5 years he has worked with the global and UK Fragility Fracture Networks (Home - Fragility Fracture Network) focusing on the 4 pillars of fragility fracture management - acute care, rehabilitation, secondary fracture prevention and policy. He co-chairs the Fracture Liaison Service Academy Network (FLS Academy & Network (FAN) Community - login) and is committed to championing Fracture Liaison Services.

Professor Xavier Griffin

Professor Xavier Griffin spearheads academic orthopaedics at QMUL and Barts Health, having joined in August 2020 as the inaugural chair of Bone & Joint Health. Xavier’s vision is for worldclass excellence in research and clinical academic training; providing opportunity for the next generation of clinician scientists to realise their aspirations.

Xavier has been awarded over £12m of research funding and over 100 peer reviewed publications. He is a recognised research leader in the management of hip fracture and is excited to have launched the WHiTE PLATFORM study with colleagues at University of Oxford. Xavier is Chief Investigator for a number of National Institute Health Research funded clinical trials, having led 9 in the last 5 years and supported a further 5.

Xavier is driven by having meaningful impact on patient care; his research is focused on the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing treatments to improve bone and joint health and has been cited by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. He has a passion for developing methodologies which harness the speed, power and efficiency of routinely-collected data but are coupled with the great advantages of randomisation.

Xavier’s clinical expertise is orthopaedic trauma surgery specialising in pelvic and acetabular fractures. He enjoys working as part of the team at the busiest orthopaedic trauma hospital in Europe – The Royal London. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1999 before attending medical school at the University of Oxford, Xavier trained in orthopaedic surgery as a National Institute of Health Research integrated clinical academic fellow. Xavier completed a world-renowned clinical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia specialising in complex fractures of the pelvis and hip. Prior to joining Bone & Joint Health Xavier was Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital major trauma centre.

Outside of work Xavier can be found mountain biking or rock climbing usually with his young sons in tow!

Professor Amy Grove

Professor of Implementation Science, Centre for Evidence and Implementation Science (CEIS), University of Birmingham

Prof Amy Grove. Professor of Implementation Science and Director of the Birmingham Centre for Evidence and Implementation Science (CEIS). Prof Grove  has built a pioneering and distinct area of scholarship in Implementation Science and Health Technology Assessment. Her interdisciplinary contribution across clinical and organisational science is unique. In organisational science, her independent contribution to theory and methodological development in the field is achieved via her three personal NIHR Fellowships, which explore the implementation of evidence-based interventions in surgery (2013-2025). As a Chartered Psychologist, she spearheads a programme of research on Implementation Science in surgery. 

In clinical science, she specialises in evaluating health technologies (e.g., drugs, medical devices) and public health interventions for policymakers, with expertise in mixed method study design and synthesis. She has an outstanding record of successful funding applications in this space to generate scientific, methodological, and theoretical contributions. Through her research and education, she brings cutting-edge social science theory into the clinical arena, delivering innovative, inclusive, and intellectually challenging education programmes to develop the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Sanjay Gupta

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Sanjay Gupta is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon/MSK Oncologist and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Glasgow.

After graduation he worked in Newcastle upon Tyne, the Central Coast in Australia, Middlesbrough and Northumberland before returning home to complete his specialist orthopaedic training in the West of Scotland. He undertook substantive fellowships at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, with further travelling fellowships across the world.

His practice is focussed on musculoskeletal oncology, hip/knee replacement surgery and osseointegration. He is passionate about tumour research, education and global orthopaedics, focussing on teaching in lower resource settings.

Professor Chinmaye Gupte

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Imperial College London

Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals. 

His main interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of sports knee injuries and knee arthritis, together with trauma and fracture surgery. He performs both arthroscopic (keyhole) and open procedures, in particular cruciate ligament surgery, meniscal repair, patellar stabilisation, children's knee surgery and knee replacement. 

Mr Gupte is a specialist knee surgeon with over 10 years experience as consultant, but also has an active research and teaching interest in knee problems. 

As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also ex President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section having served as President in 2012, and is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the prestigious British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 70 papers in this and other topics which include shoulder and ankle surgery, tuberculosis and training the surgeons of the future. 

He continues his research as a Clinical Reader in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College, with particular emphasis in meniscal surgery and knee ligament reconstruction, and also in arthroscopic simulator training, with the aspiration of improving outcomes in patients with knee problems. He helps train surgeons of the future at Imperial, He is a cofounder for the patient access website www.orthoconsent.com, which provides information on common procedures. 

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into t he unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice. 

Colonel Hugo Guthrie

Colonel Hugo Guthrie is the professional lead for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery across the Ministry of Defence. He works clinically at St George’s Hospital and the South-West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, with a practice that includes Lower Limb Trauma and Knee Surgery. He is Training Programme Director for the Defence Deanery. 

Hugo spent 2 years as a regimental doctor, including 12 months in Iraq. He deployed to Afghanistan as a surgical trainee and briefly worked in Birmingham as Military Registrar. Since being appointed as a consultant in 2015, he has deployed internationally and in 2021 was part of the Military Advisory Team at Nightingale Hospital London. He has served as Clinical Director at 22 Field Hospital, as Consultant Advisor to the Head of the Army Medical Services and in 2024 was appointed to his current position as Defence Consultant Advisor to the Surgeon General. 

Professor Fares Haddad

Fares Haddad is a hip and knee reconstructive surgeon and Professor of Orthopaedics and Sport Surgery at University College Hospitals and The Princess Grace Hospital in London, UK. He is Divisional Clinical Director of Surgical Specialties at UCH, Director of the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health at University College London, past Professor Haddad's clinical and research endeavours have centred around hip and knee reconstruction and sports surgery. He remains a very active high volume surgeon in spite of a broad leadersip, research and editorial portfoio. His interests include enhanced technology in surgery, implant fixation, periprosthetic infection and outcomes assessment in hip, knee, sports and revision surgery.  His broader work also encompasses strategies to preserve and regain musculoskeletal health; he led the musculoskeletal team at the London Olympics 2012, was instrumental in setting up the National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine and gained International Olympic Committee Centre of Excellence status at ISEH. He works with a number of elite sports and was the Chief Medical Officer for the NFL in the UK until 2022.

He was the gold medallist in the FRCS (Orth) exam and has gained a large number of prizes and prestigious academic awards.  He has been an EFORT Travelling Fellow, British Hip Society Travelling Fellow and ABC Travelling Fellow in 2004. He was a Hunterian Professor in 2005. He is past president of the British Hip Society and BOSTAA and has been a council member. He is a member of the Hip Society, the Knee Society, the International Hip Society (currently President) and the International Knee Society . He is also currently President of the European Hip Society.
He has presented and published widely on key aspects of hip, knee and sports surgery including over 700 peer reviewed publications. He leads a clinical research group with interests in the management of soft tissue injuries including hamstrings, prosthetic design and performance, and outcomes measurement after hip / knee injury, degeneration and surgery.

Shahnawaz Haleem

Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham

Mr Haleem is a triple fellowship trained Consultant Spinal surgeon, a specialist whose training fellowships covered the whole breadth of adult and paediatric spinal surgery including deformity, degenerative, tumours, inflammatory and musculoskeletal presentations. His adult degenerative and deformity practice is based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He has performed dual-surgeon paediatric deformity correction operative procedures in the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.  

Mr Haleem completed his Higher Orthopaedic Training Programme obtaining his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) from the prestigious London Deanery where he was inspired to take up a career in Spinal Surgery. He has consequently actively worked towards developing and enhancing his specialist skills in world class training centres both in the United Kingdom and worldwide. He has also gained the EUROSPINE Spine Diploma and the EUROSPINE Advanced Spine Diploma during this process.  

He has travelled overseas on prize-winning fellowships to Hong Kong and Istanbul to improve his spinal and paediatric spinal skills at renowned centres where he gained immensely from leading spinal experts. He is known to be a thinking surgeon who always tries to find a safer and better way of improving patient care and outcomes. This is evidenced in his two eponymous classifications that improve patient safety and care worldwide. 

Mr Haleem is known for his scientific approach and has authored, taught and presented worldwide. He is very active in research and his published research involves both adult and paediatric topics that are extending the boundaries of patient care in general and spinal surgery in particular. He is active with major spinal and orthopaedic societies and holds leadership roles where he enjoys interacting and improving the spread of knowledge in a bid to help patients worldwide.  

He has been an active member of BIOS serving in various roles and is currently serving as the Education Secretary and President Elect of the society.

Bob Handley

Bob is the GIRFT National Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Trauma. He was a Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon in Oxford with a trauma only practice for 31 years. He is a Past President of the British Orthopaedic Association and Orthopaedic Trauma Society. He was a member of the NICE guideline development for Hip Fractures co-chaired the two groups for the orthopaedic components of the 2016 NICE Trauma suite. In the past he had wandered; working in Shetland, the Falklands and the Antarctic. He has subsequently been domesticated and now mends toys and attends weddings.

Karen Harries

Karen is an Australian trained Registered Nurse who has been in the UK since 1995. She is currently the Lead Nurse for Pre-operative Assessment at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Philip Henman has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Newcastle upon Tyne since 2001.  He graduated from St Andrews and Manchester Universities and roamed around the country during his training, loosely based in Dundee for specialist training in orthopaedics.  Fellowship training in children’s orthopaedics was divided between Montpellier, Metz, Paris, Adelaide and London before he finally settled to steady employment in the Northeast of England. His consultant post has been a hybrid commitment to orthopaedic trauma care and children’s orthopaedics which come together in an interest in treating children’s musculoskeletal trauma and infections.  He became involved in teaching with AOUK over ten years ago and has been active in teaching on children’s trauma in the UK and overseas since then.  

Joanna Higgins

Miss Joanna Higgins is a fellowship trained Hand and wrist, Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon. Graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2005, completing Specialist Training in Wessex in 2018, followed by a subspecialist fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. She was appointed to consultant post at University Hospitals Dorset in 2021. 

Joanna has a very varied professional practice. She is a strong advocate of “Getting It Right First Time”, restoring patients back to a good level of function, honest communication and treating patients according to their individual needs. Always looking for Quality and Service Improvement within Hand and Wrist Surgery has joined a national collaborative called HandsFirst, improving hand and wrist trauma across the UK. She has been the driver behind the Hand Hub at University Hospital Dorset, where a procedure room has been utilised to undertake as much Day Case Local Anaesthetic Procedures as possible. 

Joanna was also successful in becoming British Orthopaedic Association Culture and Diversity Champion for the region, improving workforce culture within the specialty and beyond. Professor Caroline Hing

Professor of Orthopaedics, St George’s University, London

Caroline trained in Medicine at University College London with an intercalated BSc(Hons) in Anatomy & Developmental Biology. She completed her Orthopaedic and Trauma training on the Pott Rotation based at Barts and The London Hospitals with a further period of training at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital whilst completing an MD, doctoral thesis on patellofemoral instability. She also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering awarded by the University of Wales. Her fellowships included trauma at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and knee surgery at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. 

Caroline has subspecialty interests in knee surgery, especially patellofemoral instability and in trauma. She is a Professor of orthopaedics at St George’s University London with research interests in patellofemoral instability and trauma. She has established a patellofemoral service within St George’s Hospital for local and regional referrals. She was clinical director for corporate outpatients at St George’s Hospital from 2019-2024 and previously lead for research in orthopaedics in the trust, having supervised over 50 orthopaedic trials. She has developed an orthopaedic trauma trials research infrastructure within St George’s including research physiotherapists, clinical trials managers and research fellows. Together with Miss Gelfer she supervises an education foundation year doctor, education fellow and an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow. She is co-editor in chief of The Knee Journal, research chair for the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, immediate past research chair for AOUKI and a previous BOA trustee. She lectures nationally and internationally on patellofemoral instability and trauma.

Chris Hoffman

Chris Hoffman is an Orthopaedic Spine surgeon. He is the President of the New Orthopaedic Association and has recently retired as RACS Senior Orthopaedic Examiner for New Zealand. He has a long interest in the management of back pain, both non-operative and operative having completed Fellowships in Trauma and

Spine at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto in 1994 and 1995. He established The Back Institute (now TBI Health Group) in 2001, it is now a nationwide programme of 52 clinics and as the Medical Director, he has overseen the development of pathways for assessment and management of back pain in the community. Riki works Less Than Full Time to play a niche sport called fives. This is "like squash with your hands", and the name of the sport originates from there being five digits (for most) on each hand. Since going LTFT he has won the Kinnaird Cup three times, equivalent to Wimbledon for the sport, and is currently ranked number 1.  

He studied medicine at Cambridge University, where he developed his passions for fives, orthopaedics, and medical education. He completed a Masters in Medical Education at the University of Dundee during his Foundation and Core Training years and continues to facilitate teaching for Cambridge undergraduate students in Surgery, Clinical Ethics & Law, and Professionalism. He has set up and runs the departmental orthopaedic teaching for postgraduate learners at his trust. I am the Head of Specialist Applications for the Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST), having taken on this role in October 2024 after my predecessor’s retirement. My responsibilities include managing a team of Specialist Applications Casework Managers who assist evaluators in assessing Portfolio Pathway applications (formerly known as the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) and making recommendations for applications seeking entry to the General Medical Council’s (GMC) specialist register.

Previously, I worked as the Invited Review Programme Manager for the Invited Review Mechanism at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where I drafted invited review reports for healthcare organisations.

He is actively involved in the education and mentorship of orthopaedic surgeons, particularly in arthroscopic techniques and modern shoulder surgery. His comprehensive surgical training includes extensive experience in primary and revision joint arthroplasty, having trained with Professor B.G.P. Lindeque and Professor T.L.B. le Roux across the fields of shoulder, knee, hip, and hand surgery. His practice integrates contemporary evidence-based techniques with advanced technologies to optimise patient outcomes.

An early adopter of robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, Dr Julyan has more than three years' experience in robotic knee arthroplasty and completed advanced MAKO robotic shoulder arthroplasty training in the United States in 2025. He currently practises at Pretoria East Hospital, which has been established as a recognised training centre for MAKO robotic shoulder arthroplasty and augmented reality (ARVIS)-assisted surgical procedures.

Mr Khakha’s NHS practice is based in central London teaching hospital Guy’s and St Thomas’. He has been in consultant practice since 2017 dealing with all elements of knee related injuries ranging from children’s knee injuries right the way through complex redo surgery. 

His philosophy is based on joint preservation surgery, where he routinely performs ligament repairs and reconstructions, meniscal repairs and osteotomy surgery. He regularly accepts referrals from other orthopaedic centres to manage complex primary and redo knee reconstructive surgery. 

Following his successful completion of fellowship in the US at Massachusetts General Hospital in trauma surgery and knee fellowship at North Hampshire Hospitals, Mr Khakha embarked on his consultant career at Guy’s and St Thomas’. Prior to this, he trained on the South-East London Training Rotation. 

He is also Knee Lead Tutor for South London and KSS Trauma and Orthopaedic training programme and is Honorary clinical lecturer at Kings College London, where he is also Patron of the Orthopaedic Society. He has a passion for research as well as education and training, and regularly speaks at international and national meetings on modern minimally invasive knee surgical techniques. 

Mr Khakha completed his medical degree at St Georges University Hospital in 2006. He was awarded a BSc with honours at University College London in Orthopaedics and went to complete a Masters in the same field at the University of Brighton. He is an honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London and oversees surgical fellows looking to refine their skills in knee surgery.

Om Lahoti

Mr Om Lahoti is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in children and adult lower limb surgery based at King’s College Hospital where he treats patients with complex lower limb fractures, deformities, limb length difference (limb lengthening and growth modulation), children’s hip and foot disorders. He have specialist interest in complex deformities including a wide range of foot and ankle conditions.

After completing a Master of Surgery (Orthopaedics) at the prestigious Osmania University/Hospital, Hyderabad, Telangana State, India, he moved abroad for further education and training. He worked in Ireland, England (South East Thames Deanery) and was awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1989 and Intercollegiate Board Exam (FRCS Orth) in 1996. Mr Lahoti undertook advanced training in children’s orthopaedic disorders at the prestigious Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, as a National Fellow in Paediatric Orthopaedics. He completed a diploma course in gait analysis to study lower limb mechanics and complex interaction between hip, knee and foot and ankle, at the Strathclyde University. Mr Lahoti pursued advanced training in circular frame treatment at the world famous Ilizarov Institute, Kurgan, Siberia, Russia. He was also awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons Canada in 2001 after examination. He was appointed to a consultant post at the University Hospital Lewisham in 1998 and then moved to King’s College Hospital in 2003 to pursue specialist interest in adult and paediatric lower limb disorders.

Mr Lahoti is very passionate about undergraduate and postgraduate education and conducts teaching courses regularly. He co-organised the very first King’s College FRCS (Orth) revision course and Paediatric Orthopaedic FRCS Orth Revision Course in 2008. He then became an examiner for the Intercollegiate Board Examination in Orthopaedics – FRCS Orth Examiner- in 2011.

Mr Lahoti also has a keen interest in orthopaedic clinical research, and he has presented his research widely. He is regularly invited to speak at the national and international conferences. He also conducts training workshops for the postgraduate trainees and junior consultants in the field of Lower Limb Reconstruction. Mr Lahoti is also a faculty at various paediatric and adult orthopaedic courses in the UK and abroad. He is also past President of British Limb Reconstruction Society (2020-2022).

Ajay Malviya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in the North-East of England and at Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital. He trained in the Northern Deanery and has done specialist fellowships in hip preservation and joint replacement surgery in Cambridge, London and Switzerland.

He specialises in periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia using a minimally invasive approach and hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement. In his routine practice, he deals with sports injuries of the hip and has published and presented widely on the results of hip arthroscopy and pelvic osteotomy in athletes and the general population. 

He has completed a PhD on the role of hip arthroscopy in femoroacetabular impingement. Preservation of the hip joint is his principal philosophy but he has a wide experience of joint replacement surgery catering to the young population, if necessary.

In his routine practice, he does more than 150 hip and knee replacements annually for all age groups. He also performs around 150 hip arthroscopies and more than 75 pelvic osteotomies for hip dysplasia annually; making him the highest volume hip preservation surgeon in the North East and amongst the top in the country.

Professor Andy Metcalfe

Andy Metcalfe is a Professor at Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). His clinical practice is in knee surgery including patellofemoral problems, sports surgery, osteotomy and arthroplasty. 

He leads multiple high-impact clinical trials, including RACER-Knee, START:REACTS (both published in The Lancet) as well as currently running trials such as METEOR2 and REPPORT. He was Research Lead for the British Association for Surgery of the Knee 2019-2023, is Secretary of the British Patellofemoral Society, and has been involved in multiple NICE guidelines. He has led the clinical academic training in T&O at Warwick and UHCW for many years, taking people through foundation training, academic clinical fellow posts and PhD fellowships through to Clinical Lecturer posts and beyond. 

Andy now leads a body of work focused on delivering effective innovations to patient care, and is the Chief Medical Officer of a spin-out company supported by Orthopaedic Research UK delivering research on new medical devices called Veriq.

Yusuf Michla

Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon, South Tyneside & Sunderland Foundation Trust

Mr Michla is a consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon at the South Tyneside & Sunderland Foundation Trust. His specialist interest is in shoulder & elbow surgery with complex shoulder & elbow trauma being a particular interest. Mr Michla was appointed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as the Deputy National Director of the Foundation Trainees’ Surgical Societies in 2024. He also acts as a Regional Surgical Advisor for the College.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Michla has a strong interest in undergraduate & postgraduate training and medical education. He has been nominated as the Northern Deanery’s “Trainer of the Year” three times, winning the title once.

For local postgraduate trainees he is a current academic mentor for Northern Deanery core and specialist trainees as well as for the Northern Foundation School, as well as sitting as a committee member of ONTEA, the Northern Deanery specialist training education steering group. At undergraduate level, he holds an honorary senior lecturer post with the University of Newcastle school of medicine, as well as an honorary lecturer role with the University of Sunderland school of medicine.

He was appointed the honorary chair of the University of Newcastle’s Surgical Society in 2016 & he also serves as the current co-chair of AO UK & Ireland’s undergraduate courses.

Rhidian Morgan-Jones

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Rhidian trained in Cardiff at the University of Wales, College of Medicine as it was then, qualifying in 1989. His training rotation was between Oswestry and Stoke-on-Trent and included fellowships in Johannesburg and Sydney. 

Rhidian has spent his Consultant career working on orthopaedic infection and revision knee replacements in Cardiff. He recently ‘transferred’ across the border to work in Colchester and help establish the Regional Revision Knee Network. 

Rhidian has a strong interest in education at all levels and continues to lecture widely. He has had the pleasure of founding and running national knee infection meetings from which he continues to learn from his peers. A personal philosophy, when possible, has always been to organise cross-speciality meetings, which broadens one’s perspective and heightens respect for colleagues in other medical and non-medical areas. This led to being a co-founder of the Bone & Joint Infection Society (BAJIS) and the inaugural President. BAJIS is a true cross-speciality society for all healthcare workers, scientists and industry partners interested in managing orthopaedic infection. 

Now living in Essex, he remains as Welsh as ever but perhaps a little less partisan than before. Professionally and personally, although life continually changes, he could not be happier than at present.

Surgeon in Ipswich, Queensland since 1999 maintaining a general practice but with a paediatric interest in the public and private sectors. He has always been committed to registrar teaching having been a past Chair of Training for Queensland. He served as an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for 9 years and is a past Secretary of the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland where he also serves on the Board of Fellows at King’s College.

Mark is passionate about Orthopaedic Outreach, maintaining a strong affiliation with the surgeons in Fiji via annual visitations and regular communications. He has previously served on the Outreach Board as an AOA appointment. His hobbies include ornithology, origami, snow skiing and when time allows, he enjoys trekking with his family which has taken them to places such as Mt. Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp, Langtang (Nepal) and Kokoda (New Guinea). Dr Heidi Mounsey is a medicolegal consultant and provides advice and support with a variety of medicolegal matters, including clinical negligence claims, inquests, complaints, disciplinaries, and regulatory proceedings. She joined Medical Protection in 2016 and has previously worked in anaesthesia and also in palliative medicine. Since joining Medical Protection she has written a variety of articles and case studies, and is the author of a number of Learning from Cases publications, looking at common themes and issues arising in cases and claims. She is also the editor in chief of Practice Matters UK, focusing on advice and information for the general practice team, and has given a number of presentations to a range of audiences covering common medicolegal problems and concerns.

Sunil Nedungayil

Senior Clinical Lead, Falls and Fragility Fracture Audit programme (FFFAP), Royal College of Physicians

Dr Sunil Nedungayil, is the Senior Clinical Lead for the Falls and Fragility Fracture Audit programme (FFFAP). He is a GP in the North-West, the Clinical Director & GPwER in Musculoskeletal Medicine, at East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust. He trained as an Orthopaedic Surgeon, before becoming a GP.

With over 25 years of NHS experience across primary, community, and secondary care, he has served as the Medical Director for the Northern Health Science Alliance and as a member of the NHSE, Best MSK Health Osteoporosis Falls and Fragility Fracture Working Group. He is a Clinical Advisor to the Royal Osteoporosis Society, a GP Educator & Appraiser and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer.

His expertise centers on holistic patient management, quality improvement, and bone health. He has pioneered national and local initiatives to enhance osteoporosis detection and fragility fracture management in primary care, contributing to benchmarking, research, and clinical innovation.

Professor Rob Nelissen

Chairman and Professor Department of Orthopaedics Rehabilitation, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC)

Professor Rob Nelissen is Professor of Orthopaedics at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), where he served as Chairman and Professor of the Department of Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy from 2006 to 2026. He has also held senior academic and educational roles at Delft University of Technology and within the Leiden–The Hague Orthopaedic Residency Programme.

His research relates to “optimising clinical outcome” and “prediction modelling of outcome”. The latter relates both to fundamental research on Orthopaedic implant migration (i.e. implant-bone fixation with RSA / V3MA as 1 year predictor for 10 year implant loosening) as well as implant related infections (e.g. induction heating). Next to this, healthcare evaluation and quality of care research using large registry data  is done (e.g. choosing wisely program, value-added health care and predictors of outcome after total knee and hip arthroplasty) has his attention of research with direct (de)implementation in clinical practice. 

He successfully supervised about 80 PhD students on these topics. He published more than 600 peer-reviewed articles on these topics

Professor Nelissen has supervised approximately 80 PhD students and has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications.

Alongside his academic work, he has held numerous national and international leadership positions. He is a Board Member of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT), serving in roles including Secretary General, Vice-President and President for 2026–2027. He also chairs the European Thematic Expert Panel for Orthopaedics, Trauma, Rehabilitation and Rheumatology under the Medical Device Regulation.

He was a co-founder of the Dutch Arthroplasty Register (LROI), one of the world's largest implant registries, and served as Chair of its Registration Council. Nick is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He trained on the South-East Thames Orthopaedic Circuit and completed Fellowship training at Sheffield Children’s, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital as well as completing a travelling fellowship at Inselspital, Berne prior to becoming a Consultant in 2010.

His clinical interest is the Paediatric Knee and he treats the whole spectrum of pathology from cruciate and meniscal injuries to congenital ligament deficiency and complex patellofemoral problems. He also maintains a clinical interest in management of Osteogenesis Imperfecta and clinical research.

He is the chair of the recent BASK/BSCOS steering committee on soft tissue knee pathology in children and the current BSCOS/BASK paediatric patellofemoral steering committee chair, both of which aim to improve national standards of care, and academic secretary of BOSTAA.

Nick was a founding member of the annual International Kids Knee Conference. In 2018 he connected with the Ambassador Programme to help progress his plans for this event and find a suitable venue. With a venue secured, we then introduced him to a local Event Management Company, Event Management Direct to oversee the delivery of the event. The first conference was hosted in 2019. 

Anastasios P Nikolaides

Consultant Femoral Fragility Trauma and Lower Limb Arthroplasty Specialist, NHFD Orthopaedic Clinical Lead, Chair European Committee Fragility Fracture Network

Dr Anastasios P. Nikolaides is an internationally recognised Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip trauma, lower limb periprosthetic fractures, fragility fractures, arthroplasty, and complex reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Medical School in 1990, obtained his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Orthopaedics and Trauma in 1998, and completed a PhD in 2008 focusing on polyethylene wear in total knee arthroplasty.

Since January 2020, Dr Nikolaides has served as Consultant Hip Trauma and Lower Limb Arthroplasty Specialist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He led the Birmingham Heartlands Femoral Fragility Fracture Service, one of the largest services of its kind in the UK, managing approximately 1,200 hip and periprosthetic fractures annually. Under his leadership, the service was shortlisted for the 2024 HSJ Award for Clinical Redesign, recognising its innovative approach to fragility fracture care.

A highly respected clinical leader, educator, and researcher, Dr Nikolaides was appointed Co-Chair of the European Committee of the Fragility Fracture Network in 2024 and will become National Hip Fracture Database Orthopaedic Lead for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland from July 2026. He is also Director of the UK’s only Senior Femoral Fragility Fellowship.

Dr Nikolaides holds the position of Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Birmingham and plays a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, trainee supervision, and examiner activities. He became a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators in 2023.

His clinical interests include minimally invasive fracture fixation, complex revision arthroplasty, kinematic alignment and augmented reality navigation in knee replacement surgery. He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in research, editorial work, and international professional education in orthopaedic trauma and arthroplasty.

Olivia O’Malley

Trauma & Orthopaedic Registrar, North West Thames Deanery

Miss Olivia O’Malley is a Trauma & Orthopaedic Registrar in the North West Thames Deanery and is in the final year of her PhD at Imperial College London. She is a former Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellow, with a clinical and academic interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Her PhD research focuses on the increasing use of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in the UK, with much of her work using linked National Joint Registry data to evaluate contemporary practice and outcomes. Her research has explored changing indications for RSA, outcomes and revision surgery, as well as surgeon decision-making when choosing between arthroplasty options. Through this work, she has developed a particular interest in the use of national registry data to understand real-world surgical practice, evaluate outcomes and inform clinical decision-making.

Nick Ohly

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Golden Jubilee University National Hospital

Nick completed postgraduate training in Glasgow and Edinburgh, followed by a hip and knee fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He was appointed as a consultant at the Golden Jubilee in 2014. He runs a specialised elective-only practice focused exclusively on hip and knee arthroplasty, with sub-specialist interests in robotic and computer-assisted surgery, and complex and revision knee arthroplasty.

Professor Ben Ollivere

Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Chair of Orthopaedic Trauma, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham & Nottingham University Hospital

Ben OIIivere is a clinical academic trauma surgeon (one of just a handful in the UK) working at Nottingham University where he is Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma, Head of Department. He is Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor where he leads on Academic Performance and Reputation for the University. He trained in Oxford, London and later Cambridge before coming to Nottingham as a clinician in 2011 and then moving to the University in 2016. He was subsequently appointed to a Chair in 2020.

Professor Ollivere works at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham with a special interest in trauma, non-union and complex peri-articular work. He is a limb reconstruction surgeon and undertakes over 100 limb reconstruction cases for infection, bone defects, deformity and complex injuries a year.

He is a world leader in his field and has achieved a total personal research portfolio of £59M (>£8M as CI) with research funding from the MRC, NIHR (HTA, EME, DRF, RfPB and BRC programmes) and InnovateUK. He takes a big picture approach to research with themes established in injury and recovery, frailty and decline and chest injury. During the Covid-19 pandemic the MRC funded Panther programme for which he was CI generated the data responsible for introduction of booster vaccine doses.

Dr. Panourgia graduated in Medicine from the University of Bologna and trained in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Verona. She later earned a PhD in the study of healthy ageing and longevity from the University of Bologna.

Since 2013, she has worked as a Consultant in Geriatric and Orthogeriatric Medicine at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where she has led transformative improvements in the care of older patients with hip fractures. She is Clinical Lead for the hospital’s Fracture Liaison Service, for the inpatient falls and Orthogeriatric Lead.

She is a member of the Executive Board of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN) – Greece and co-Chair of the EuGMS of the Urinary Incontinence Group of the EuGMS.

She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Buckingham Medical School and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

From January 2026 she has been appointed Orthogeriatric Lead of the NHFD.

Kavi Patel

Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma & Limb Reconstruction Surgeon

Kavi is a consultant orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction surgeon at The Royal London Hospital specialising in adult complex trauma, orthoplastics, bone infection, failed fixation, non-union and deformity correction. Having graduated from the Royal Free and University College Medical School, he completed his higher surgical training on the Cambridge rotation following which he undertook two post-CCT fellowships at King’s College Hospital and St George’s Hospital.

Kavi has authored a textbook chapter, multiple peer-reviewed articles, contributed to national guidelines and delivered international podium presentations in his field. He has also completed a full-time Masters in Surgical Science at UCL which culminated in the publication of basic science research.

A keen educator, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, is regular faculty on limb reconstruction/trauma courses and is a Senior Clinical Lecturer/co-director on the Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc at the Blizard Institute. He is the fracture-related infection lead on the UK Bone & Joint Infection Registry and sits on the OTS education committee.

As an Army Reservist, Kavi has an interest in conflict surgery and orthopaedic trauma care in the austere environment having deployed to Ukraine and volunteered in Gaza.

Giles Pattison

Giles graduated from University College London in 1991. His higher surgical training was in Bristol and the Southwest. After completing his fellowship training at SickKids in Toronto he was appointed to a consultant post at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire in 2005. He completed a masters in medical education at the University of Warwick. Giles has been TPD of the Warwick programme and served on the SAC from 2019- 2025, latterly as Vice Chair. Giles has been a member of BOA council. He has served as departmental chair and Head of Surgery at the trust. Giles has a wide-ranging paediatric orthopaedic practice, which includes a baby clinic, trauma, and an on-call commitment.

His development as a leader started with an interest in medical education and this has been the major focus of his career. His initial experience in clinical management was as audit lead and subsequently chair of the department. At this time, he developed an understanding of the complexities of change in the NHS. His leadership roles also engendered an interest in behaviours and the management of colleagues. Giles teaches on the British Orthopaedic Association’s new consultants’ course on the subject of communication and how to be an effective consultant colleague. Most recently he has developed an interest in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. Giles was a founding member of the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance and help write the BOA’s first E, D and I strategy. He is married to a surgeon, and he has three grown up children, one of whom is a doctor.

Anthony Perera is a Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon with over 20 years' experience and more than 5,000 procedures performed — one of the most experienced foot and ankle surgeons in the United Kingdom. He qualified from the University of Birmingham and undertook fellowship training with some of the most prominent foot and ankle surgeons in the world across the USA, Ireland, South Africa and Australia. He was awarded the top prize by the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society in 2008 for this work. 

An international leader in minimally invasive bunion surgery and one of the longest-established practitioners of this technique in the world, Anthony holds patents in surgical technique, has developed original procedures published in the international medical literature, and teaches this technique to surgeons across the UK and the United States.

The first orthopaedic surgeon in Wales to transition to full-time private practice, Anthony has operated a fully paperless private practice for nineteen years — at a time when the NHS's own National Programme for IT, launched in 2002 with a budget of over £6 billion to digitise healthcare records across England, was closed down in 2011 having failed to deliver its core objectives. With artificial intelligence now reshaping orthopaedic imaging, clinical decision support and practice management, he brings a perspective grounded not in theory with a university position in the AI but also in nearly two decades of building and running technology-enabled clinical infrastructure in the real world. 

Yet for all that, Anthony's central conviction is not about technology. It is about people. The tools that transform private practice — the automation, the AI, the digital infrastructure — matter because they return time and clarity to surgeons who are currently overwhelmed by systems that should never have required their attention. What you do with that time is what counts. And what he believes you should do with it is turn towards your colleagues: share what you know, build the networks your training never gave you, and recognise that the success of the surgeon beside you is not a threat to your own. In a profession that has too long mistaken isolation for independence, learning to work together is not a soft ideal. It is the most practical strategy available to us.

She is Secretary of The British Limb Reconstruction Society.

She was in the Army Reserves for over 30 years retiring in 2021. She deployed  in March 2003 for Op Telic 1 (2nd Gulf War).

IDEALS was established in 2000 by John Beavis.  Its mission: to relieve poverty, distress and suffering in any part of the world affected by conflict and/or natural disaster.  It has worked in Bosnia-Herzegovia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Lebanon and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Sarah has been involved in helping to establish a Limb Reconstruction Service in Gaza since 2013. IDEALS provided training for orthopaedic surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists as well as providing specialist orthopaedic equipment.  The charity has helped in the treatment of war wounded patients and those injured in 2018-19 border demonstrations.

Since December 2023 IDEALS has been recognised as a specialist Emergency Medical Team (Orthoplastics) and has regularly sent surgical teams to Gaza to treat those injured in the present conflict.  Sarah has made 2 visits during the present war  - her most recent visit was in January 2026.

Rob Pollock

An experienced and highly regarded surgeon, Mr Rob Pollock specialises in knee and hip surgery and the management of bone and soft tissue tumours throughout the body. Andrew has been a Consultant Specialist Knee Surgeon at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre(AOC) in Bristol, UK for over 23 years. He holds a number of roles within the National Joint  Registry including: Chair of the Editorial Committee, Vice-chair of the Surgical Performance Committee, Member of the NJR Board and the Executive Committee.

Andrew is a Past President of the British Assoc for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and served on the BASK Executive Committee for 12 years. Mr Prem graduated from Madras Medical College, India and started his orthopaedic training in 1987 at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. After completing the M.S.Orth. course in 1990, he returned home to Vellore to work as a consultant at Christian Medical College with a special interest in paediatric surgery and limb reconstruction. In 1995 he moved to Australia for advanced training and fellowships and in 1998 he arrived in England with the aim of qualifying for the FRCS Orth, which he completed through training based at the Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals. He completed a Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship at Manchester and a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Wrightington.

He started work at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and the Birmingham Children's Hospital in 2005 where he continues at present as a Foot and Ankle surgeon. He has a special interest in Flatfeet in Children and Adults and the Biology and Biomechanics of surgical complications. Professor Andrew Price

Professor Andrew Price studied medicine at the University of Cambridge (Gonville and Caius College) before completing his clinical studies at St.Thomas' Hospital in London. For his Orthopaedic training he joined the Oxford training programme in 1997, becoming a Clinical Lecturer in NDORMS in 2001.

He was awarded a DPhil in 2003 through the University of Oxford (Worcester College), studying the Oxford partial knee replacement. He then completed a year of specialist Knee Fellowship training in Melbourne, returning to NDORMs and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in 2004, where he was subsequently appointed Reader and Honorary Consultant in Knee Surgery.

In 2011, through the University of Oxford Recognition of Distinction exercise, he was made a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NDORMS. His clinical work as a Consultant Knee Surgeon is based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, where he has recently been appointed to Clinical Director T&O. His research is based in NDORMS at the Botnar Centre, where he Leads the Knee Research Group.

Professor Mike Reed

Professor Mike Reed is a full-time trauma and hip and knee joint replacement surgeon. He trained in the North of England and did fellowships in New Zealand. He leads Trauma and Orthopaedics at Northumbria Healthcare, working with a team of 31 talented colleagues. His research focuses on clinical outcomes particularly around short stay surgery as well as infection prevention, diagnosis and management. He has co-developed and commercialised a validated medical device to predict perioperatice risk. Lynne’s career began as an Operating Department Practitioner, where she gained experience across a wide range of surgical specialities at North Tees. Over the past 18 years, her SCP role has continued to evolve, developing her practice and enabling her to take on an increasingly autonomous role within orthopaedic care.

For the last five years, Lynne has specialised in the orthopaedic aspect of the High-Risk Diabetic Foot MDT service, working as the surgical liaison at North Tees and Hartlepool. Her role also includes providing a laser wound treatment service and running independent foot and ankle follow-up clinics.

Lebur Rohman
