Loan kits – short survey
Loan kit processes can vary significantly between organisations and so NHS Supply Chain's Inventory Management Systems Programme Team wants to hear from BOA Consultant and SAS members from across the UK to support a project to improve the availability and supply of loan kits.
For many surgical specialties, loan kits and implant systems are an essential component of patient care. Effective management and traceability of these products are increasingly important in supporting patient safety, clinical governance, device surveillance, registry reporting and regulatory compliance.
NHS Supply Chain wants to understand what is really happening in practice, in particular what works well, where challenges occur, and where opportunities may exist to improve current processes, in particular:
- The clinical challenges that loan kits help address in different specialities
- How loan kit requirements are identified and communicated
- Current processes for requesting and managing loan kits
- Challenges associated with the availability of instrumentation and implants
- Visibility and traceability of products throughout the patient pathway
- The impact of current processes on clinical workflow and theatre efficiency
- Opportunities to improve patient safety, governance and clinical outcomes through better traceability and information management
Please complete the short survey – 13 questions – here (no later than 20th November 2026)
The longer-term ambition is to support a more consistent and digitally enabled approach to loan kit management across the NHS, helping organisations achieve:
- Improved patient safety through enhanced product traceability
- More reliable identification of implants and instrumentation used during procedures
- Improved and timely capture of implant and device information within the patient record
- Better support for Medical Device Outcome Registry (MDOR) requirements and specialty registries
- Reduced administrative burden for clinical and operational teams
- Improved integration of product information into electronic patient records
- Greater confidence in recall management and regulatory compliance
- Enhanced data quality to support clinical outcomes monitoring, research and service improvement
