BOA statement on implant retrieval and analysis

In the absence of a national strategy for the systematic analysis of retrieved orthopaedic implants the BOA has produced guidance for members. 

For any coordinated approach across the UK—within both the NHS and independent sector—there is a need for greater clarity on how a national service would be organised, and the practical and financial implications of commissioning it. A Short Life Working Group was convened to review the clinical context and indications for implant analysis, informing an Implant Retrieval and Analysis Service position statement.

Recommendations have been shared with NHS England to consider approaches for implant analysis and implant banking services. Although initially focused on England, this could provide a framework extendable to the devolved nations.
