Emerging Treatments in Frailty: Orthopaedic Consensus Day
Friday 27th November 2026 | Nottingham
Face-to-face | Multidisciplinary consensus event
About the event
The BOA Trauma Committee is convening a multidisciplinary consensus day to explore emerging treatments, interventions and approaches for frail patients presenting to orthopaedic services.
The event will bring together approximately 30 - 40 professionals from across orthopaedics, geriatrics, rehabilitation, nursing, anaesthetics and related services to share experience, identify promising approaches and agree areas of emerging practice that have the potential to improve patient care.
The focus will be on approaches that are evidence-informed or already showing promise in clinical practice, but which may not yet be included in national guidance or established standards of care.
This will be an interactive, facilitated event rather than a traditional programme of lectures and presentations. Participants will work together to identify key priorities and develop a series of consensus statements that can support future service improvement, policy development and further research.
What will the day cover?
The consensus day will focus on acute presentations of frailty to orthopaedic services, including both patients admitted to hospital and ambulatory or "walking wounded" patients who may be managed through fracture clinics or other outpatient pathways.
Areas for discussion are expected to include:
- Frailty assessment and scoring
- Orthopaedic pathways, systems and patient flow
- Nutrition, metabolic health and sarcopenia
- Physiotherapy and occupational therapy
- Inpatient and community rehabilitation
- Improving discharge planning and reducing length of stay
- Ensuring frail patients presenting through ambulatory pathways are appropriately identified and supported
- Emerging interventions and approaches that could be implemented in routine practice
Who should attend?
The event will be multidisciplinary, recognising that improving care for frail orthopaedic patients requires input from the whole clinical pathway.
Participants are expected to include:
- Orthopaedic and trauma surgeons
- Ortho-geriatricians
- Physiotherapists and occupational therapists
- Nurses and Advanced Clinical Practitioners
- Trauma coordinators
- Anaesthetists involved in trauma care
- Trainees
- Community nursing and rehabilitation professionals
- Other relevant healthcare professionals involved in the care of frail orthopaedic patients
The event will aim to include representation from different types and sizes of units and from across the UK, ensuring that the discussion reflects both established models of care and the practical challenges faced by services where access to specialist support may be more limited.
What will the event produce?
The principal output will be a concise, single-page consensus statement setting out the key emerging approaches identified and agreed by the group.
The statement will be designed to be accessible and practical, providing a resource for clinicians and services considering how they can improve the care of frail patients presenting to orthopaedic services.
