Obituary by James Metcalfe

Liverpool to the core, John’s orthopaedic journey unconventionally commenced in pharmacology before he saw the true path.

After winning the Professors Medal in MCh Orth, John’s consultant career spanned 27 years at Walton and Fazakerley

John started his career at the forefront of a trauma and arthroplasty revolution. John helped introduce AO principles undoubtedly improving trauma care to the Liverpool population. After a Wrightington fellowship, John was instrumental in setting up the Charnley System of Arthroplasty in Fazakerley. John was also Orthopaedic Surgeon to Liverpool Football Club for a time.

Despite the time constraints of this busy life, John and Jean enjoyed 55 years of marriage and together travelled on adventures over the globe. The final adventure saw John and Jean move to Devon to be close to family.

John will be remembered as a raconteur and for his kindness and humanity to patients and colleagues.  John was loved by all. John was a great believer in family both orthopaedic and at home.

John never walked alone.
