Update regarding surgeons who have elected not to publish their surgeon-level data

There has been a development in the arrangements for handling the situation where surgeons who have elected not to release their surgeon-level data in the outcomes publication initiative.

These surgeons are to be named publicly online on the HQIP website as non-consenting surgeons when the data is published later this month. This includes orthopaedic surgeons who have consented to the publication of activity data only, not mortality data, although the fact that activity data on their practice is available will be made clear. All the surgeons in this situation will be provided an opportunity to state the reason for deciding not to allow publication of their information, which will be displayed online alongside their name. HQIP and the BOA will be contacting the surgeons affected by this as soon as possible.

The BOA appreciates that some surgeons may have legitimate reasons for withholding consent. We feel it is important that any surgeon who does not consent is given the opportunity to give reasons for this, and would encourage them to do so. The BOA will support any surgeon in this position.

If any surgeon wishes to change their consent preference, they are still able to do so. The consent options available are:
1. I grant consent to publication of my consultant-level activity and mortality data
2. I consent to publication of my consultant-level activity data only (not mortality)
3. I do not consent to publication of my consultant-level activity and mortality data
