Ghulam Abbas

Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Ghulam Abbas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a fellowship trained spinal surgeon. After completing his higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in Yorkshire, he sub-specialised in spinal surgery. Abbas did his spinal surgery training at Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield spinal units.

Abbas is currently President of British Pakistani Orthopaedic Society (BPOS)

Alwyn Abraham

Training Programme Director T&O, Consultant (Adult Trauma / Paediatric Orthopaedics), University Hospitals of Leicester

Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. The highs and lows of working in the NHS notwithstanding he remains a committed clinician, HST TPD for T&O, trainer and FRCS examiner. Clinically, he particularly enjoys the challenge of salvaging infected, traumatised, and deformed limbs in his chosen field of Limb Reconstruction. Unusually for an orthopod, he is committed to quality communication and the acceptance of human factors in medical teams. He lists an eclectic mix of influences in this regard such as Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman's Masterpiece Thinking, Fast and Slow, but equally, The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. His support of the marginalised has driven his enthusiasm for several interesting projects. This has included his advocacy of CSTs as Training Programme Director, the genesis of a Trust Foundation Doctors Programme for Internationals Medical Graduates and the creation of a Trust registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics culminating in CESR. Alwyn is particularly proud of his role as the co-founder of the Leicester Gondar Orthopaedic Partnership, conceived in 2017. This is a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester, University of Leicester, and the University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia). In collaboration with Rotary International USD 200k was raised and has led to a partnership to develop orthopaedic infrastructure in Northern Ethiopia where up to 7 million people are without the very basics of orthopaedic care.Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. Oliver Adebayo

Specialist Registrar, North East and Central London, Stanmore (RNOH) rotation

Oliver Adebayo is currently a senior Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist Registrar on the North-East London (RNOH) rotation. He graduated from Kings College London and undertook his foundation training in the South Thames Foundation School region. He was a London School of Surgery Core Surgical Trainee prior to commencing his speciality training in T&O. He has a specialist interest in knee surgery, sports injuries and limb reconstruction.

He is the former President of British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and a founding member of GASOC, the Global Anaesthetic, Surgical and Obstetric Collaboration. In 2023, he became a FMLM National Medical Director Clinical Fellow working at NHS England on Day Case Arthroplasty pathways looking at both clinical outcomes and patient experience as well as being the GIRFT Litigation Fellow working on improving consent practices across the NHS.

Oliver has been passionate about quality improvement and digital transformation throughout his medical career working with companies like Apple and Interneuron on digital platforms. During his Core Surgical Training, he undertook an MSc in Surgical Innovation from Imperial College London which helped to shape his knowledge and values with regards to improving surgical processes and education with technology and is currently a Bitelabs Digital Health, AI and Innovation Fellow. 

Irrum Afzal

Irrum Afzal is an Imperial College London graduate and a recipient of the National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA) Director’s Award. In addition to her academic qualifications, she holds both PRINCE2 Practitioner and Foundation certifications, demonstrating strong project management expertise.

With experience spanning both the NHS and private healthcare sectors, she brings a unique blend of research and operational insight, effectively delivering and managing numerous healthcare and research projects. Irrum has supported and overseen the delivery of multiple studies in compliance with regulatory frameworks and governance requirements. Her work is underpinned by a strong commitment to Good Clinical Practice (GCP). As a Professional Member of the Research Ethics Committee for the Health Research Authority (HRA), she holds a nationally significant role in safeguarding the ethical and scientific integrity of clinical research in the UK. Drawing on her extensive experience in the practical application of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles, she provides reviews clinical and non-clinical research ethical applications involving human participants, tissues, or data ensuring that all studies are ethically and methodologically robust, and that the rights, safety, and dignity of participants are fully protected. Irrum has published in various peer-reviewed journals, frequently presents at national and international conferences, and serves as a reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal.

Irrum holds multiple positions of responsibility, including Vice Chair of Research and Innovation for the NOA, Board Member for OrthoAI (ORAIA), Research Committee Representative for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA), and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Lead for BOSTAA. She is also a Non-Executive Board Member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), and plays an active role in the Imperial College Alumni Service.

Anup Agrawal

Dr Anup Agrawal is the current President of the Indian Orthopaedic Association and a former President of the Asia Pacific Trauma Society. He will share his extensive experience managing complex trauma cases.

Judith Agwada-Akeru

Dr. Judith Agwada-Akeru is a Consultant Orthogeriatrician at Whipps Cross Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, and the NHS E GIRFT National Orthogeriatrics Advisor. She holds dual CCT qualifications in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine. As Clinical Lead for Orthogeriatrics and Clinical Effectiveness for Older Person’s Services at Whipps Cross hospital, she has contributed to developing and improving pathways for managing hip fractures and older patients.

Dr. Agwada-Akeru has led initiatives to enhance coordinated care for patients with fragility fractures, including the implementation of a centralized orthogeriatric service and a collaborative project with Johnson & Johnson MedTech to establish the BARTS NOF ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Protocol. She also developed a bone health service integrated within falls prevention efforts, promoting increased initiation of bone protection therapy for primary and secondary prevention.

Her work focuses on improving recovery and outcomes for older adults with fractures through evidence-based and patient-centered approaches.

 She joined GIRFT Musculoskeletal (MSK) Portfolio as the Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery

 National clinical Advisor in 2025, supporting national efforts to optimize care for this patient group.

Raju Ahluwalia

Consultant Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Surgeon, King's College Hospital, London

Raju  is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Department of Orthopaedics, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London the King’s STAR Academic Group. He is a member of the Faculty of Sports Medicine of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He has received NIHR, ORUK, ECTB grants, and BOFAS & AO awards, and apartakes as a RCS Eng Mentor. His interests include limb reconstruction and joint salvage, including arthroplasty, deformity correction, and Charcot Reconstruction. Utilising stable osteotomies and angular correction for definitive fixation and with his colleagues established the red, amber and green debridement technique. His research has focused on understanding and improving outcomes of foot surgery.  

Usman Ahmed

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon, MBBS PhD FRCS(Tr&Orth) FRCS(Ed), Head of Virtual Learning, Postgraduate Virtual Learning Environment NHSE Midlands

Mr Usman Ahmed is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, where he also serves as Clinical Director for Trauma & Orthopaedics. His clinical interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, alongside a wider commitment to improving patient care through service development and collaborative leadership. 

Usman has a strong interest in education and workforce development. He is the founder of the Postgraduate Virtual Learning Environment (PGVLE) – an NHS digital learning platform initially created to support core surgical trainees during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has since expanded to support learners across multiple specialties, with national-level implementation underway.

Oday Al-Dadah

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, South Tyneside Hospital. Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, Newcastle University

Oday Al-Dadah is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tyneside Hospital with a special interest in reconstructive knee surgery and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. He’s from Ayrshire and graduated from Dundee University Medical School. He completed his higher surgical training as a specialist registrar on the Cambridge training programme. He then completed sub-specialist fellowship training at the Professorial Knee Unit in Southampton and also the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol. 

His consultant practice includes all aspects of knee surgery ranging from sports injuries to joint replacement surgery. Arthroscopic cartilage and meniscus surgery ranging from meniscectomy and meniscal repair right through to allograft meniscus transplant. His ligament surgery armamentarium includes anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction as well as multi-ligament reconstruction. For young adult patients with arthritis he performs peri-articular knee realignment osteotomies. He performs a high number of unicompartmental knee replacements using minimally invasive techniques. He led and developed the highly successful and innovative day case joint replacement programme at his hospital. He has considerable experience in complex primary and revision knee arthroplasty. He also has an interest in complex knee trauma including peri-articular and peri-prosthetic knee fractures and knee dislocations. He is experienced in paediatric knee surgery too. He also performs surgery for patella instability including trochleoplasty.

Oday Al-Dadah completed his Doctorate Thesis on the topic of cruciate ligament and meniscus surgery during his research fellowship within his time as a specialist registrar. He has presented his research both nationally and internationally and has won numerous prizes and gold medals for best podium presentations. He has many publications in peer reviewed journals. He has successfully supervised many research fellows at Newcastle University most of whom achieve distinctions and merit level awards for their thesis. He is the Editor-in-Chief of The Knee journal where he has the privilege of working with an international editorial board of esteemed academic knee surgeons from all over the world. He is an Executive Board member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK). 

Skaria Alexander

Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust; Honorary Assistant Professor, University of Nottingham

Skaria studied at the University of Edinburgh, did Basic Surgical Training in London and Higher Surgical Training in Yorkshire. He did two years of fellowships in Melbourne, in Burns and Microsurgery, before starting in Nottingham as a consultant in 2018. His main subspecialty interests are Burns and Orthoplastic Surgery. He is the plastics clinical lead for Governance and for Orthoplastics.

Susan Alexander

Ms Susan Alexander is a Consultant Shoulder Surgeon at Fortius Clinic in London. 

As current President of the Independent Doctors' Federation (IDrF), she is a leading advocate for clinician-led independent healthcare reform, championing the interests of doctors working in the private sector and promoting excellent standards of patient care.

Alongside her surgical work, Susan is a qualified professional coach, dedicated to helping clinicians navigate the human side of medicine, including managing difficult people and complex workplace dynamics that often fall outside the scope of formal training. She supports individuals and teams in finding clarity, building confidence, and performing at their best in high-pressure environments.

Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital & Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Honorary Senior Lecturer, University of Sheffield

Fazal Ali did his MBBS in Jamaica and Orthopaedic training in Sheffield, UK with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee, both in adults and in children. He is a consultant at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he has helped set up a national referral service for knee problems in children which is the only service in the UK that regularly manages sporting injuries and  congenital knee disorders.

He is a former OrthopaedicTraining Programme Director (TPD) for South Yorkshire and is presently the Vice President of BOSTAA (Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association).

He has published more than 70 scientific papers and chapters and given numerous invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ (Cambridge University Press) which is a best-selling orthopaedic text in its 3^rd edition and was recently published in Chinese. He is co-editing two further textbooks, ‘Postgraduate Orthopaedic Clinics’ (CRC Press), due to be released in 2025 and ‘Child and Adolescent Knee Surgery’ (Springer) which is in progress.

Fazal Ali was voted ‘Trainer of the Year’ on six occasions across 2 training rotations. As such, he was given a life-time award for training by South Yorkshire in 2014. In 2017 he was again honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation with the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner and assessor for the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examination. He is Chair of  Section 1 exam of all ten surgical specialities and sits on the JCIE and T&O Boards. He is also Chair of the International FRCS exam and serves on the board of examiners in multiple developing world countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training and care in those countries.

Abtin Alvand

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC)

Abtin Alvand is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) in Oxford. He is one of the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England based on the National Joint Registry. He graduated from University of London and completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme. He also completed a PhD (DPhil) at the University of Oxford which was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”.

Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook  post-CCT fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford (NOC) and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) Travelling Fellow in 2017 and also completed a fellowship focusing on peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, USA). He is a member of the Bone and Joint Infection Registry (BAJIR) steering committee as well as the Executive Committee member for the 2025 International Consensus Meeting for Prosthetic Joint Infection.  Abtin's clinical and research interests focus on peri-prosthetic joint infection and revision knee arthroplasty.

Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Sanjeev Anand works in the specialist knee unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a tertiary-level practice in Soft tissue knee and knee reconstructive surgery including paediatric knees.

He is a founder member and Academic chair for the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA) and is the Executive Editor for Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. Mr. Anand has led in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstructions. He has also contributed to the development of national guidelines for arthroscopic knee surgery and patellofemoral problems.

He is currently the Education secretary for the British Indian Orthopaedic Society and an executive member of the BOSTAA and British Patellofemoral Society.

Tony Andrade

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Berkshire Hospital

Mr Tony Andrade is a fellowship trained consultant Orthopaedic, Hip and Knee surgeon with a special interest in Hip preservation surgery and arthroscopic hip surgery.

He set up the hip preservation service at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2002 and it rapidly evolved into a tertiary referral centre. He has been at the forefront of the evolving surgical techniques in arthroscopic and other hip preservation procedures. This led to establishing a visiting surgeon program where surgeons from the UK and across the world were able to join him to learn these surgical techniques. He also then later established a hip arthroscopy fellowship program in 2016. He has also been fellowship director for a lower limb arthroplasty fellowship at the Royal Berkshire Hospital since 2004.

He is current chair of the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR) user group for the British Hip Society. This registry captures outcomes from hip preservation surgery nationally. 

He has been a member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) since it was founded in 2008, and was the 2020-21 president, of what is now known as ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society. 

Mateen Arastu

Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire

Mr Mateen Arastu is an orthopaedic and trauma consultant with special interests in complex trauma care of multiple injured patients at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire. He regularly performs complex trauma surgery, orthoplastic work, fracture non-union and revision fracture fixation and lower limb arthroplasty (primary hip and knee replacement surgery).

Mr Arastu is the education and hip fracture lead for the trauma & orthopaedic department at UHCW. He also teaches regularly as national faculty on several orthopaedic trauma courses.

He has completed his trauma fellowship training at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Canada. He has worked during this year with Professor Rick Buckley and has a specialist interest in the treatment of calcaneal fractures.

Vipin Asopa

Mr. Vipin Asopa PhD FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a consultant hip and knee surgeon at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre and Senior Clinical Lecturer at St. George’s and City, University of London. He has completed a PhD in Articular Cartilage Biology at the Kennedy Institute, before completing his higher orthopaedic surgical training in North West London and fellowship training at Sportsmed.SA, Adelaide and The Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has received Orthopaedic Research UK funding for a study titled, ‘The use of Machine Learning in the early detection of failing total hip replacements’. He is also a computer programming coder an associate editor for AI submissions to The Knee Journal.

William Guy Atherton

Guy has been a Consultant in Children’s Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children since 2004. He maintains a wide –ranging practice in all aspects of children’s trauma and orthopaedics with a particular interest in neuromuscular conditions and paediatric foot & ankle (in particular clubfeet). He is an experienced Examiner (and Examiner Assessor) for the FRCS (T & O) examination in the UK and internationally. He has been an examiner for COSECSA (sub-Saharan Africa) since 2018 and is the External Examiner for the COSECSA FCS (Paed Orth) Exam. He is the current President of the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery.

Olufemi Ayeni

Dr. Ayeni is a Professor and Academic Division Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University, Canada. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health Research Methodology, Evidence and Impact and Medical Director for the Hamilton Tiger Cats (Canadian Football League) and Forge FC (Canadian Premier League). Dr. Ayeni has been named a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Joint Preservation Surgery (2022-2027) by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and a University Scholar (2022-2026) at McMaster University. He is the Past-President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and was named a Member of the Royal Society of Canada, Class of 2025.

He has published over 400 academic publications in sports medicine and related research, as well as edited several textbooks. Dr. Ayeni is the Co-Chair for the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Scientific Committee (2023) and Research Committee Chair for the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (2021). Recently, he completed roles as Deputy Editor in Chief for the journal of Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy (KSSTA) and Scientific Editor for the Canadian Orthopaedic Association Bulletin and is now the Editor-in Chief for the Journal of ISAKOS. His clinical practice and research focus on minimally invasive orthopaedic interventions that treat joint injuries with the aim to prevent degenerative joint disease.

Anouska Ayub

Anouska is a Paediatric T&O Consultant at the Royal London Hospital.  She has a particular interest in education, with an MSc (MedEd) and is on the BSCOS Education Committee.

Armughan Azhar

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon, Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital, Manchester

Mr A. Azhar is a Consultant in Hand and wrist surgery at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), a major trauma centre where he handles complex cases in Hand and Wrist surgery alongside other specialities.

Throughout his career, he has cultivated a strong passion for teaching and research, contributing significantly to the academic and clinical development of future orthopaedic surgeons.

Mr. Azhar serves as a Speaker, Mentor, and Faculty member for the British Orthopaedics Association's FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) Clinical Examination Course, where he plays a crucial role in preparing candidates for the rigorous FRCS examination. His commitment to education extends further as a Course Faculty member for the Postgraduate Orthopaedics FRCS (Tr & Orth) Revision course at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, affiliated with Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In addition to his roles at these prestigious institutions, Mr Azhar is also a Faculty member for the Chesterfield, Sheffield, and Derby FRCS Clinical Examination Course, a program that offers high-quality clinical examination teaching to senior orthopaedic trainees. Neel Badhe

Morgan Bailey

Morgan Bailey completed a paediatric orthopaedic fellowship at University Hospital Southampton. She also completed a research fellowship for the British Association for Surgery on the Knee, with a focus on patellofemoral pathology, for which she was awarded the BASK President's Award. She works between University Hospital Southampton and Portsmouth University Hospitals as part of a paediatric orthopaedic hub and spoke practice. She has a special interest in all paediatric and adolescent knee pathology and provides a paediatric acute knee service across both sites.

She is the Hampshire ambassador for the injury prevention charity Power up to Play, as well as sitting on a national working group for injury prevention. She is the Chair for the Women’s ACL Orthopaedic Steering Group. She has a passion for injury prevention in children and young women, and gender parity in the diagnosis and management of ACL injuries.

Emily Baird

Consultant in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgery, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.

Paul Banaszkiewicz

Paul graduated from Glasgow University, completing his basic SHO surgical training in the Merseyside Deanery and then undertook specialist registrar training on the North East of Scotland training programme.  He was appointed as Hip and Knee arthroplasty surgeon at Queen Elizabeth hospital Gateshead in 2004.

He is passionate about training and medical education being a fellow of Higher Education Academy, fellow Academy of Medical Educators and has a Master’s degree in Medical Education.

He is an RCSEng member for the appointments accreditation committee (AAC) and RCSEng quality assurance and accreditation assessor for courses seeking RCSEng course accreditation. 

Paul is visiting professor at Northumbria University this role acts as an interface between the academic roles Northumbria University provides and his own clinical oriented background that provides a practical focus for research.

He has been a strong supporter of the BOA Futures Leadership Programme and the BOA annual Travelling Fellowships.  He is a keen supporter of BOTA being regularly involved with their annual instructional course and sponsor of BOTA travelling fellowships. 

Paul is the main editor and author for three FRCS (Tr&Orth) related exam books that are international best sellers and have won several BMA book awards.  He co-ordinates an annual six-day intensive FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course at Newcastle. In recent years Paul has run its international equivalent for overseas trainees with courses taking place in Dubai, India, Singapore and Jordan. 

For many years Paul was involved in humanitarian work in Northern Iraq regularly visiting the region to undertake neglected hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.  This gave him a greater appreciation and understanding of our own health care system.  Many patients would have continued to struggle due to a lack of local expertise and resources to pay for expensive surgery.

Through the contacts he has made overseas Paul is keen to develop the international profile of the BOA.

Joanne Banks

Jo is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with specialist interests in sports knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma. She trained at Liverpool University Medical School and completed her surgical training in the Mersey region. She has also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff. She works at the Liverpool University Hospitals, a large city centre teaching hospital, MTC and tertiary referral centre.

She is passionate about education and is an Honorary Lecturer with the University of Liverpool. She is a regular faculty member on national and international courses and is the Training Programme Director and Education Director for the Mersey Orthopaedic and Trauma Training Programme. Rahul Bhattacharyya

Mr Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals, Glasgow and at Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow. He is also Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He is currently member of the executive committee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).

Mr Bhattacharyya has extensive training and experience from world leading centres in the UK, USA and Canada which he now offers to his patients in the UK. His clinical interests are focused entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries with experience in treating elite level athletes. This includes meniscal repair and meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and patella stabilisation surgery. He also treats patients with arthritis with a focus on knee joint preservation wherever possible.

Mr Bhattacharyya is a keen academic. He has two higher degrees in research, having completed an MSc in orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh and an MD (Res) from Imperial College London. Here, he pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery which led to multiple academic publications and presentations. He has been nominated by the Royal College of Surgeons, England, for innovation in surgical education and for the president’s medal in teaching innovation by Imperial College London for his work in this field. He continues to work in this area in his current role as Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London collaborating nationally and internationally. He also has a keen interest in biomechanics research investigating innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation and clinical research ensuring patient outcomes are evaluated to deliver the highest standards of care. Leela Biant

Leela Biant is the President of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the King James IV Professor, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is Academic Head of Dept Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Manchester, Honorary Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manchester University Hospitals an is Co-Director of the regional North West Joint Preservation Service, serving a a poulation of over 7 million patients for Cartilage Repair and Regeneration. Leela trained in London and completed specialist fellowships in Sydney and London.

She was Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Edinburgh for 8 years before moving to Manchester. Her thesis was entitled ‘Articular Cartilage Injury and Repair in the Young Adult Knee’ and her research focus includes biological regenerative surgery and advanced joint replacement. She has won multiple awards for research, and now leads a strong research team that includes academic clinicians, biomedical engineers, materials scientists and cell biologists. Leela is an elected ICRS Senior Fellow, and founded the ICRS Global patient registry. She is a Lifetime Honorary Fellow of the UK Biological Knee Society in recognition of her work in this field. She has won awards for teaching, and is a clinician advisor to NICE. She was an ABC Travelling Fellow in 2010 and BASK Travelling Fellow in 2014.

Claire Blandford

Dr Claire Blandford has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at Torbay Hospital since 2013 having graduated from St Georges Hospital Medical School and then completed her anaesthetic training in the South West. Milos Brkljac

Milos is a Clinical Research Fellow at the MSK Lab, Imperial College London, where he is undertaking a PhD under the supervision of Justin Cobb and Kartik Logishetty. His research focuses on optimising hip arthroplasty through gait analysis, examining how surgical approach and implant design affect proximal femoral elasticity under physiological loading. He is also investigating periprosthetic femoral fractures, exploring the influence of stem design using a biomechanical model. In parallel, he studies physical activity after hip and knee replacement through remote monitoring. Peter Brownson is recognised for his expertise in arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

Vittoria Bucknall

Miss Bucknall trained in Birmingham before further graduating from the University of Dundee with honours in Orthopaedic Sciences. Following this, Miss Bucknall joined the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Programme where she completed her higher surgical training.

Miss Bucknall went on to complete her fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Alder Hey where she joined the team as a consultant.

Lt Col Caesar qualified as a doctor in 1998 and set out to pursue a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics from his time as a junior house officer in London. He undertook basic surgical training in Edinburgh and higher surgical training in Oswestry, during which time he was BOTA President, obtained his doctorate from Imperial College, his fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, and membership of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Whilst he was on his post-CCT fellowship year training in Derby and London, he joined 256 City of London Field Hospital as a Reservist and passed out from RMAS in January 2012 before starting as a Consultant at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. He was appointed as a substantive consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital from where he deployed on Herrick 18 with 33 Field Hospital. Upon his return, he applied for a transfer of commission and returned to RMAS in 2015 before being posted to 33 Field Hospital and was posted to Brighton for his clinical placement, where he remains today. His interest in burnout was triggered by the foundation of the Chavasse Clinic in Brighton for Service Personnel and Veterans, and his subsequent exposure to numerous patients with PTSD, anxiety and depression, and a realisation that a similar but subtly different issue was affecting his colleagues and himself. Upon further research, he discovered the literature around burnout and moral injury in healthcare workers and has published and presented his work both nationally and internationally in this field. He has just completed work with colleagues from the Compassionate Leadership Academy and Mindalpha delivering a research driven programme, Compassion for Healthcare Workers, which has demonstrated statistically significant improvement in participants Compassion Index (CI) and statistically significant decreases in their Brighton Burnout Inventory (BBI) scores, which he co-developed, which is unique in including psychological safety as part of its analysis of burnout.

James Calder

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Fortius Clinic and Dept Bioengineering Imperial College London

James Calder is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Fortius Clinic London and Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College. His main area of interest is the management of foot and ankle injuries in athletes. He looks after the English Premier League Clubs, many of the European football clubs, England and Irish Rugby, Indian and England cricket team and the GB Olympic teams. Donald Campbell

Donald Campbell was born in Vancouver Island, Canada and emigrated to Scotland where he spent his formative years. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1993 and trained around most of Scotland, including his Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) rotation in the East of Scotland. He completed two years of fellowships in paediatric T&O in Glasgow and Sheffield. He was appointed as a consultant in Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Dundee in 2007, where he treats a broad range of paediatric conditions with a particular interest in the foot and the ankle, including some adult F&A work. Charlie Chan

Charlie Chan is a photographer and cancer surgeon practising in Cheltenham. He was a Consultant in General surgery with a specialist interest in breast and sarcoma in 1999 initially at Bournemouth but later at Cheltenham, but left the NHS to enter full time private practice in 2013. Now he mostly treats breast cancer patients, but was previously the vice chair of the South West Sarcoma panel.

He has held a number of posts in BASO (British Association of Surgical Oncology) and ABS (Association of Breast Surgery) and was the senior author for the 2005 & 2009 “BASO Guidelines” on the surgical management of breast disease & cancer. He has contributed to the UK guidelines on breast radiotherapy, and is also on the Trials Management Committee for 3 large UK breast radiotherapy trials.

He has been acting as an expert witness on breast medical negligence cases for nearly 20 years and was instructed as the NHS surgical defence witness in the Paterson Class Action, which was settled pre-trial in 2017 for £37.3m. Subsequently he was appointed by the Bishop of Norwich to act as a Professional Clinical Adviser to the Independent Inquiry.

During his time in private practice, he became one of the longest serving MAC Chairs at Nuffield Health. Over 10 years ago, he helped to establish the only quorate independent private sector MDT within Nuffield Health and established a cosmetic breast MDT meeting 10 years ago.

He originally joined FIPO 18 years ago, initially representing Nuffield MAC Chairs. FIPO represents specialist medical organisations and societies in private practice, as well as promoting the interests of private patients. In 2007, FIPO launched a Patient Charter, which defined the principles governing medical practice in the independent sector. The Charter was supported by the GMC, Patients Association and the various Royal Colleges. It underpinned the principles of appropriate GP referral, patient choice and consultants working within their scope of practice.

Away from the day job, you will find him at his night job, photographing rock and jazz bands. He was particularly good friends with the late Wilko Johnson, who sadly passed away in late 2022.

Helen Chase

Salma Chaudhury

To date she has been awarded £450,000 in research grants, including an ORUK early career research fellowship, and has published widely. She is the associate editor for Bone and Joint Journal 360, and was previously the social media editor for Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently sits on the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Research Committee and was previously Executive Committee member for British Orthopaedic Research Society. 

Teaching has always been important to Salma and she was the co-director of orthopaedic teaching for Oxford University undergraduate medical students for 4 years. She has taught widely on courses such as the Oxford University Orthopaedic MSC course, shoulder and elbow cadaveric courses in Cambridge and ORUK FRCS Revision courses. She has regularly lectured internationally and nationally, including teaching in China and Palestine.

Anna Clarke

Anna Clarke is a paediatric orthopaedic consultant in Bristol. She is a keen educator and co-chair of the AO paediatric trauma course. 
She is also the clinical lead for the Bristol paediatric MTC, one of only 5 standalone paediatric centres in the UK. 
Her special interests include all aspects of trauma but particularly upper limb. She has developed a niche practice in managing complex elbows in children which has taught her much about the difficulties in managing the rarer injuries and their consequences.

Robert Clayton

Robert Clayton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a major specialist interest in all aspects of Foot and Ankle surgery. He moved to Edinburgh in 1994 and graduated in 2000. Nick Clement

Mr Nick Clement is an orthopaedic consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (UK), and his clinical practice focuses on hip and knee arthroplasty.

He has been awarded a PhD for his work looking at the outcome of total knee arthroplasty, and an MD for his research defining fracture epidemiology and outcomes in elderly and super-elderly patients.

He has recently been appointed as the Clinical Lead for orthopaedics for the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland, and is Chair for research for the Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma (SCOT). In these positions he hopes to help to promote and support research projects across Scotland, and to establish national and international collaborations.

He is the author of over 350 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters, and believes that only through collaboration can true orthopaedic science progress.

His recent publications in relation to robotic assisted surgery suggest that patient outcomes following hip and knee arthroplasty may be improved with the adoption of such technology. Whether this is a cost effective intervention in the NHS is however not clear.

Julie graduated from Queen’s University in Belfast, and has since completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Education at Queen’s University, and a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. She is now an undergraduate educational lead for fractures for Queen’s University Belfast.

She teaches quality improvement and leadership skills to doctors in the Belfast Trust as part of the QI faculty.

Julie has a special interest in clinical data analysis and project design and is the Belfast Trust’s specialty improvement lead for their fracture inpatient database. She is also the Northern Ireland representative on the NHFD advisory group and a member of the RCP’s FFFAP committee.

Dr Creaney qualified from Sheffield in 2001 and was the first registrar in the country to qualify as a Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine in 2009. Since then he has worked as an NHS Consultant (substantive) at QEH Birmingham, with fixed-term posts in Sheffield, Manchester and Warrington.

He has served as Chief Medical Officer for 4 different Olympic Sports – British Athletics, Football (LFC Women), GB Taekwondo and GB Gymnastics, and now works exclusively privately in Manchester with all major hospital groups (HCA, Circle, Spire, Nuffield).

Upon qualifying as a consultant in 2009 Dr Creaney took a 12 month secondment to the Department of Health (DH) where he worked 2 days per week on the NHS Business Case for Sport & Exercise Medicine, authoring and publishing the document “Exercising Healthy Outcomes” a guide for NHS Commissioners, which was published by DH in 2010.

In 2022 Dr Creaney joined the BMA Private Practice Committee where he is the lead for negotiations with Private Medical Insurers. He also leads on the ‘BMA Health’ project and will chair the BMA Private Practice Conference in November.

Sebastian Dawson-Bowling

Sebastian specialises in all aspects of lower limb surgery, especially primary and revision hip and knee replacement, and sports injuries. He also works within the Royal London Hospital major trauma service.

He was Clinical Network Director for the Barts Hospital group and North East London ICS from 2017-2022, during which time he led development of the regional elective orthopaedic centre, also researching and implementing development of the accelerated post-surgical patient recovery.

Following undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, he undertook specialist surgical training on the Guy's and St. Thomas's rotation, at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore) and the Hospital for Special Surgery (New York). He holds Master’s degrees in Medical Law and Musculoskeletal  Science. He has co-authored three textbooks; as well as has contributing chapters to other volumes on orthopaedics, trauma and medical law. He frequently acts as an expert witness in litigation cases.

Professor Cosimo De Bari

Professor Cosimo De Bari is a Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Edinburgh. He is a practising rheumatologist and a translational scientist, and has expertise in musculoskeletal regenerative medicine and the pathophysiology of arthritis. His research focuses on joint health and disease, with a particular emphasis on cell-based therapies for cartilage repair and osteoarthritis.

Cosimo earned his medical degree summa cum laude from the University of Bari (Italy), where he also completed specialist training in rheumatology. He obtained his PhD from the University of Leuven (Belgium) before moving to King’s College London in 2003. In 2005, he was awarded an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship. Professor Francesco Dell'Accio

Professor Dell’Accio is a clinical rheumatologist and a scientist whose interest is focused on regenerative medicine and osteoarthritis. He qualified as a clinical rheumatologist in Bari, Italy. He obtained his PhD in Belgium where he contributed to the R&D of ChondroCelect, the first EMEA-approved cell product for cartilage Repair. Since then he studied the molecular mechanism of cartilage healing and he has identified several potential therapeutic targets for cartilage Regeneration. Jugdeep’s clinical work focuses on improving outcomes for older people undergoing elective and/or emergency surgery. Over the past 20 years, she has led the development and evaluation of the innovative and award-winning Perioperative medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) service in the United Kingdom. This model of care first established at GSTT has been shown to deliver better outcomes for older people undergoing surgery, with value for the NHS. Jugdeep has published widely on preoperative assessment and optimisation, perioperative approaches to frailty and delirium, and health services research examining perioperative pathways. She has a wide education and training portfolio, having established the first medical, nurse and allied health professional training programmes in perioperative medicine for older people. She has co-authored e-learning modules, MSc modules and multiple textbook chapters.

Mr Alexander Dodds BSc (Hons), MBBCh, MSc, MD (Res), FRCS (Tr and Orth) is a nationally regarded UK Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, and specialist Knee and Hip surgeon. Mr Dodds has served on the BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) executive team from 2017- 22, responsible for driving best practice in patient care across the UK. His first-class surgical practice is underlined by his world renowned research work, for which he was awarded an MD (Res) from Imperial College London.

Mr Dodds specialises in the diagnosis and management of knee and hip related conditions, treating joint pain, instability and sports injuries to get you back to your best. Eva Doherty

Eva is a practising Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Associate Professor and Director of the Human Factors in Patient Safety (HFPS) training, research and assessment programmes at the National Surgical Training Centre, Department of Surgical Affairs, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dublin, Ireland. The HFPS training is a mandatory component of the postgraduate professional training for surgical, emergency medicine, radiology and ophthalmology trainees. Each year over 100 interactive workshops and high fidelity simulation training courses are delivered to trainee doctors, doctors not currently in training and consultants on topics which include medical error, risk management, communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, decision-making, open disclosure, emotional intelligence, crisis management, stress and well-being, professionalism and leadership. Eva pioneered and directs the academic Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Human Factors in Patient Safety which is an inter-professional one/two year part-time online programme. Eva has over 50 peer reviewed publications on topics relevant to clinical communication issues, curriculum development and personality factors in medical education and assessment. Eva acts as advisor to the National Healthcare Communication Programme in Ireland, HSE. She is a member of the ISQUA Expert Panel and the Independent National Patient Safety Council in the Department of Health. He has spent 2 years as VSO volunteer in Malawi 2010-2012 and been actively involved with WOC UK since. He was BOTA linkman, then trainee representative and now is chairman of WOC UK. He is an alumni of BOA Future Leaders Programme. He has run a yearly surgical camp in Malawi for the past 3 years under the banner of Feet First. He has trained LMIC surgeons with AO alliance and observed the COSECSA fellowship exams.

He is enthusiastic about teaching and training. He is engaged with BOFAS through their mentorship programme and as international education committee member. He is the current education and governance lead for his department. He is past president Mersey 58 society for regional trainees.

Holly Soper-Doyle is the clinical lead Physio for the Young Adult Hip team at Cambridge University Hospitals, where she works as an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist. She previously worked for 8 years at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital-Stanmore as a Specialist hip physio. She has extensive experience comprising of 13 years NHS service, military rehabilitation at Headley court dealing with complex trauma injuries, and sports physiotherapy for premiership hockey, rugby, cricket and football teams, including both Chelsea football club and Queens Park Rangers football club. Her clinical interests include: hip dysplasia and young adult hip conditions, metal on metal hip replacements and rehabilitation post-hip surgery.

Holly is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer on the ‘Physical Therapy in Musculoskeletal Healthcare and Rehabilitation’ Msc at University College London. She has contributed to the writing of “Early Rehabilitation in Conflicts and Disasters Field Handbook”, commissioned by the World Health Organisation, Humanity and Inclusion and AO Foundation and in 2022 she co-authored a chapter on Hip Dysplasia in the book: HIP AND KNEE PAIN DISORDERS: Integrating manual therapy and exercise.

In 2018, she completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy from the University of Liverpool gaining a distinction.

As well as working for the NHS, Holly has her own veterinary and human physiotherapy business ‘Integrum Physiotherapy’ based in North London. She has a website dedicated to hip dysplasia and enjoys mentoring and lecturing on hip dysplasia rehabilitation and treating patients from all over the world.

Professor Andrew Duckworth

Andrew Duckworth is Professor of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh and is Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.  His undergraduate and postgraduate study was undertaken at the University of Edinburgh, with the award of his PhD in 2016.  Following completion of his training in Edinburgh, he was an Upper Limb Fellow at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit. 

Andrew’s clinical and research interests are in trauma and upper limb surgery, with a focus on injuries around the elbow, wrist and hand. His current research includes multi-centre clinical trials in orthopaedic trauma, large data studies and the efficacy of patient reported outcome measures.  He is the Co-CI for the NIHR funded FOREST and MOTION trials and is a co-app and PI on several other NIHR funded clinical trials.  He is an Editorial Board Member for the Bone and Joint Journal (BJJ), Bone and Joint Research (BJR), Bone & Joint³⁶⁰ and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma (JOT). He is also on the Research Committees of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) and the Orthopaedic Trauma Society (OTS).  He is a co-director of the world-renowned Edinburgh International Trauma Symposium and is a member of the Edinburgh Sports Medicine Research Network and the UKCCIIS IOC Research Centre of Excellence.

Having qualified as a Doctor in 1993 I have over 28 years of Orthopaedic experience.  

I trained in at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where I was the Senior Surgical Officer and awarded the Seddon Society Medal for research. There I trained with some of the leading hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK. My fellowship year was spent in London training in minimally invasive techniques and rapid rehabilitation.   

In 2008, in Fife, we set up one of Scotland's first Enhanced Recovery Programmes. Since then we have visited several national and international centers, learning new techniques of enhanced recovery including Day Case Arthroplasty Programs. This learning culminated, in August 2018, when we performed the first Day Case Hip Replacement in Scotland. The day case arthroplasty programme has gone from strength to strength and now 25% of all my Total Hip Replacements are successful Day Case discharges. The median LoS for all of my patients is one day and the average LoS <1.5 days.

Claire Edwards is Head of the School of Surgery East of England. Professor Lars Engebretsen

Professor Engebretsen is currently the Professor Emeritus of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Oslo University Clinic and stepped down Dec 31 2024 as Head of Medical Sciences in the International Olympic Committee. Professor Engebretsen has published over 500 articles and book chapters, with a citation index (H-index) of 118. He is among the world’s most productive in clinical, epidemiological and basic science research in the areas of general sports medicine, knee ligaments, cartilage and prevention of sports injuries and illnesses. He has received research grants and awards from many agencies and associations, including the National Institutes of Health, the Norwegian Council for Research in Science and Humanities, the Norwegian Ministry of Health, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the International Olympic Committee. He and his group have won several research awards around the world, and he was inducted into the AOSSM Hall of Fame in July 2015 and became an ESSKA Honorary member in 2016 and ISAKOS Honorary member in 2017 and EFFORT Honorary member in 2022. He received the Nordic Prize in Medicine in 2016.

Engebretsen is involved with three research groups: Knee ligaments together with May Arna Risberg in Oslo and Robert Laprade in Vail, Colorado, now in Minnesota, the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center co-chaired with professor Roald Bahr and emphasizing prevention of injuries and diseases in sports, and the Oslo Cartilage Group, which encompasses research from the cell to rehab after surgery, involving molecular biologists, pathologists, radiologists, physiotherapists and orthopedic surgeons. In 1997, the cartilage group performed the first knee joint chondrocyte transplantation in Norway. Since then, the group has had major emphasis on translational research. The group works closely with the Stem Cell group led by dr Brinchmann and has optimized chondrocyte and stem cell cultivation while at the same time developing surgical techniques for implantation. Professor Engebretsen has been the President of the Norwegian Sports Medicine Society, the Scandinavian Foundation of Sports Medicine and European Society of Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). Dr Engebretsen is or has been a board member of many other societies including, but not limited to, the Norwegian Society of Sports Medicine, the Scandinavian Foundation of Medicine & Science in Sports, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the Orthopedic Research Society and International Knee Society. Dr Elodie Gloria Ewolo Sike is a trainee in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Yaoundé I, Cameroon. She is actively involved in the management of musculoskeletal conditions in both children and adults. Her main areas of interest include Bone and Joint infections, on which she has published, as well as growth-related disorders and lower limb deformities.

He returned to Tasmania where his practice initially was quite general in nature, but in the last ten years has been focused on hip and knee arthroplasty. He has been the President of the Australian Arthroplasty Society and has had numerous leadership roles at local, state and national levels.

He was the Head of Orthopaedics in his local hospital for 25 years and for 15 years was the Director of Surgery.  He has dual fellowships, being a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators (2017) and Associate Professor with the University of Tasmania.

Thayasivam Gobyshanger

Dr. Thayasivam Gobyshanger, MBBS, MS, FCSSL, FICS, FRCS (Edin), is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka and current President of the Sri Lanka Orthopaedic Association (SLOA). With over 18 years of clinical experience, he has played a pivotal role in advancing trauma care, sports medicine, and rehabilitation in Sri Lanka. 
 
A graduate of the University of Jaffna, Dr. Gobyshanger ranked among the top of his class, receiving multiple gold medals including the Professor Milroy Paul Gold Medal for Clinical Surgery and the Dr. Varasapillai Gabriel Memorial Gold Medal. He later earned his MS in Surgery, MRCS (Edinburgh), FCSSL, FICS, and most recently, FRCS (Edinburgh). Simon Graham

Simon is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma at the University of Oxford and a Limb Reconstruction Consultant Surgeon at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust.

Simon's research focuses on advancing higher standards of care in musculoskeletal trauma in low- and middle-income countries. He completed a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research PhD Fellowship at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the University of Edinburgh. His project investigated fracture healing in HIV positive patients and was awarded the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons Hunterian Professorship and Syme Medal. He also holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Leeds.

Alberto Gregori

Alberto has been involved in LMIC activity since he worked as a Mission General Officer in Zimbabwe in 1985. He worked in Lebanon during the 2nd Camp War in the 80s and in Zambia on Fellowship before a career as an NHS Arthroplasty and Trauma Surgeon. In his NHS post he taught and helped develop both navigation and robotic knee surgery and has over 27 years experience in the field with many books and papers. Since leaving full time NHS practice he has worked on several projects, in Malawi both with Feet First and the developing SCOT project along with being a Visiting surgeon and Trustee for FlySpec Zambia. He coordinates equipment collection in Scotland and distribution to enable young surgeons to ply their trade mainly in Zambia but also in other LMIC environments. He is passionate about teaching and the "right operation in the right place at the right time by the right team" philosophy.

Michael Grevitt

Mike has been involved in leadership roles since graduating. He has seen examples of great leadership whilst a serving office in the British Army and as a trainee on the South East Thames orthopaedic rotation. Professor Xavier Griffin

Professor Xavier Griffin spearheads academic orthopaedics at QMUL and Barts Health, having joined in August 2020 as the inaugural chair of Bone & Joint Health. Xavier’s vision is for worldclass excellence in research and clinical academic training; providing opportunity for the next generation of clinician scientists to realise their aspirations.

Xavier has been awarded over £12m of research funding and over 100 peer reviewed publications. He is a recognised research leader in the management of hip fracture and is excited to have launched the WHiTE PLATFORM study with colleagues at University of Oxford. Xavier is Chief Investigator for a number of National Institute Health Research funded clinical trials, having led 9 in the last 5 years and supported a further 5.

Xavier is driven by having meaningful impact on patient care; his research is focused on the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing treatments to improve bone and joint health and has been cited by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. He has a passion for developing methodologies which harness the speed, power and efficiency of routinely-collected data but are coupled with the great advantages of randomisation.

Xavier’s clinical expertise is orthopaedic trauma surgery specialising in pelvic and acetabular fractures. He enjoys working as part of the team at the busiest orthopaedic trauma hospital in Europe – The Royal London. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1999 before attending medical school at the University of Oxford, Xavier trained in orthopaedic surgery as a National Institute of Health Research integrated clinical academic fellow. Xavier completed a world-renowned clinical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia specialising in complex fractures of the pelvis and hip. Prior to joining Bone & Joint Health Xavier was Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital major trauma centre.

Outside of work Xavier can be found mountain biking or rock climbing usually with his young sons in tow!

Graeme Groom

Graeme Groom is an orthopaedic surgeon at King's College Hospital. He came to medicine late with the Army funding his studies.

An interest in trauma was almost inevitable as he has been involved in the care of the wounded from 15 wars or civil disasters. He set up a Limb Reconstruction Service at Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital, joined the fledgling Circular Frame Users Group, and was a founder member of the BLRS.

The service moved with him to King's in 1993 and has developed into a specialised team, boasting ready access to both mental health and Citizens Advice support, funded by the Rebuild charity. It plugs the many gaps in NHS provision.

He joined IDEALS in 2009, when it first began working in Gaza, and is now Co-Chair. The focus there has been principally on Limb Reconstruction. The consistent objectives, with brilliant NHS colleagues, were treatment, training, building capacity, and delivering equipment. The team has been thoroughly embedded in the excellent local service. The project was to end, "job done", in October 2023. The subsequent humanitarian catastrophe has involved 14 Missions from IDEALS; he has been on 4 and denied once. The need continues, and the work intensifies.

Graeme was appointed CMG in the New Year Honours 2025.

Chinmay Gupte

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Imperial College London

Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.  Chinmay is a member of the BASK executive committee and BASK lead in research, as well as NIHR clinical research network NW London lead. He is also clinical director of the 30 yr established Wellington knee unit and CEO of Sportshealing ltd.

His main clinical interests are in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus root repairs, multiligment injuries, adolescent knee injuries, patellofemoral instability, osteochondral injuries and robotic knee unicompartmental and total knee replacement.

As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 100 papers in his research interests which include lateral tenodesis in ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, MPFL reconstruction, joint fluid analysis, chondral replacement and  simulation training of knee surgeons.

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into the unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.

Enis Guryel

Enis is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon working at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust in the Major Trauma Centre since 2011.

His specialist interest is in the management of acute complex trauma in both the upper and lower limbs in adults and pediatrics.  Enis’ sub-specialty interests are the management of bone infection, non-union, deformity correction and limb lengthening and works with plastic surgeons performing combined operating lists and MDT clinics.

Colonel Hugo Guthrie

Colonel Hugo Guthrie is the professional lead for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery across the Ministry of Defence. He works clinically at St George’s Hospital and the South-West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, with a practice that includes Lower Limb Trauma and Knee Surgery. He is Training Programme Director for the Defence Deanery. 

Hugo spent 2 years as a regimental doctor, including 12 months in Iraq. He deployed to Afghanistan as a surgical trainee and briefly worked in Birmingham as Military Registrar. Shahnawaz Haleem

David Hamilton

Zaid Hamoodi

Mr Zaid Hamoodi is a Trauma and Orthopaedics Specialty Registrar (ST8) in the Northwest (Mersey) Deanery with a specialist interest in upper limb surgery. He is a former NJR/RCSEng Research Fellow and a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester, where his research explores the predictors of failure in total elbow replacement.

He led the NJR Data Quality Audit (NJRDQA) for elbow arthroplasty alongside Professor Adam C Watts. This was a national collaborative initiative involving the NJR, BOTA, BOA, BESS, and RCSEng. Professor Caroline Hing

Caroline trained in Medicine at University College London with an intercalated BSc in Anatomy & Developmental Biology. She completed her Orthopaedic and Trauma training on the Pott Rotation based at Barts and The London Hospitals with a further period of training at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital whilst completing an MD, doctoral thesis on patellofemoral instability. She also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering awarded by the University of Wales. I joined the GMC in May 2022, having previously been head of medico-legal services for part of the government. I spent a lot of my time advising healthcare professionals who were involved in clinical negligence claims, inquests and regulatory matters. 

Prior to my full-time appointment to the GMC, I sat as a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) tribunal member and a Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board examiner.

Mr Neil Jain is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and the founder of UK Sports Medicine, a private practice focused on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries through innovation. He is able to offer keyhole surgery for a wide range of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries, in addition to administering non-operative treatments such as injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Mr Jain originally graduated from the University of Southampton before undergoing basic surgical training in Plymouth. Bilal Jamal

Bilal Jamal is a trauma, foot, ankle and limb reconstruction surgeon who is based out of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow where, alongside his plastic surgical colleagues, he leads the orthoplastic service for the west of Scotland.

Bilal qualified from the University of Aberdeen in 2006 following which he completed surgical training in Glasgow. Bilal was the recipient of the prestigious European Foot and Ankle Society travelling fellowship in 2015 which led him to visit centres in Heidelberg, Lyon and Verona. Further fellowship experience was gained in Sheffield and Edinburgh.

Bilal was appointed as a consultant in 2017 and was tasked with establishing a limb reconstruction service. He  is a member of the executive committee of the British Limb Reconstruction Society as well as being a council member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Since January 2022, Bilal has served on the trauma committee of the British Orthopaedic Association.

Raveen Jayasuriya

Rav completed his intercalated BMedSci in Medical Research in 2009 and his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Sheffield in 2012. Since then, he has worked in NHS hospitals across the Yorkshire region and, in 2014, became the first appointed NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow (ST1) in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery in South Yorkshire. 

In 2020, he undertook a Health Education England Leadership Fellowship, and in 2022 completed an MSc in Surgical Innovation at Imperial College London. Rav has contributed to several areas of the University of Sheffield, including the Academic Unit of Medical Education, the Mellanby Bone Centre, the Department of Oncology and Metabolism, and, most recently, the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) as a PhD student and Co-Applicant on the NIHR BASIS Study RCT. 

Rav recently achieved his CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, having trained on the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Rotation. During his Out-of-Programme training, he completed a two-year pre-CCT Paediatric Spinal Deformity Fellowship at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He currently serves as the Trainee Representative on the British Scoliosis Society Executive Committee. 

The Leeds Spinal Fellowship is Rav’s first post-CCT fellowship, where he aims to further develop expertise in adult and paediatric spinal deformity, acute on-call spinal pathology, and lumbar and cervical degenerative spinal conditions. Following this, he will undertake his second post-CCT fellowship in Brisbane, Australia. 

Lee Jays

Prof Lee Jeys is an Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in Orthopaedic Oncology and complex lower limb arthroplasty including periprosthetic joint infection from Birmingham, UK. He is clinical lead of the Oncology & Complex Arthroplasty unit at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, honorary Professor of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University and president elect of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society.

He obtained a MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering and a DSc with his thesis ‘Improving Patient Outcomes by Innovation and Collaboration in Orthopaedic Oncology &amp; Complex Arthroplasty’. He has over 300 publications on oncology, arthroplasty, infection and basic science. He is a Board Member of International Society of Limb Salvage and has been a former Chair of National Cancer Research Institute Sarcoma Clinical Studies Group and board member of European Society of Musculoskeletal Oncology. He lectures internationally on both Oncology and Arthroplasty, a visiting Professor in many units and has on average published a paper per month since being appointed as a consultant.

He recently organised a global consensus meeting in controversial aspects of Orthopaedic Oncology to wide acclaim. He lives on a farm in rural Worcestershire with his partner and young daughter, whilst his 3 grown up children study Law, Engineering and Philosophy at university. Once a decent high jumper, water polo player and marathon runner, he now mainly contemplates his growing navel but can be stirred into sporting action occasionally.

Kyle Jeray

Dr Kyle Jeray is a graduate of the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Greenville Health System, now Prisma Health–Upstatein Greenville, South Carolina and, subsequently did his Orthopedic Traumatology fellowship at the Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte, North Carolina under the direction of Drs. James F. Kellam and Michael Bosse. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Jeray joined the faculty of Prisma Health–Upstate. Dr. Jeray is currently the Chair of for the Department of Orthopedics Surgery at Prisma Health–Upstate. He is a clinical professor in the Clemson University School of Health Research and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University.

Dr. Jeray's research has focused upon the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries. His clinical interests include the management of open fracture wounds, osteoporosis, complex upper extremity fractures, fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum and motor vehicle and motorcycle accident related injuries. He has also collaborated with a number of basic science researchers on multiple projects related to orthopedic biomaterials, biomechanics and driving performance after injury.

Professor Rebecca Kearney

Rebecca is Professor and Director of Bristol Trials Centre, within Bristol Medical School. She is a NIHR Senior Investigator and academic physiotherapist leading in the design and delivery of clinical trials. Her primary focus is pragmatic multi centre randomised controlled trials that evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions in the area of trauma and orthopaedics. Mr Cronan Kerin is a Consultant Knee & Trauma Surgeon in the Liverpool University Hospital Teaching Hospital Major Trauma Centre. After graduating from St Andrews and Manchester Universities medical programme Mr Kerin spent his early medical career in the Lancashire region. He then undertook his Higher Surgical Training on the prestigious Oswestry Orthopaedic Training programme. Following his Higher Surgical Training Mr Kerin undertook fellowship training in knee surgery at Aintree University Hospital and Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. His training was further enhanced by fellowships in America, Germany and Northern Ireland.

Mr Kerin is recognised an excellent trainer and is currently an honorary senior lecturer post at the University of Liverpool and the regional Training Programme Director. He is current  Chair of Selection Design Group Trauma & Orthopaedics National Selection and an examiner for the FRCS (Tr & Orth). Mr Kerin is regularly invited to teach at national and international meetings, training juniors and other Consultants on arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction of the knee and knee replacement and trauma surgery.

Raghbir Khakha

Dr Raghbir Khakha is a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in joint preservation, ligament reconstructions and arthroplasty. He is based at Guys and St Thomas Hospitals in central London where he has a fellowship programme. His training involved a fellowship in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Basingstoke in Hampshire focusing on complex osteotomy and paediatric knee surgery. He did his basic science degree in trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, followed by a Masters in the same subject.

Raghbir has taken an active role in multiple international scientific initiatives. Vikas Khanduja is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in both preservation and arthroplasty aspects of hip surgery and has a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery of the hip. He has been instrumental in setting up the tertiary referral service for Young Adult Hip Surgery in Cambridge for East of England.

Complementing his clinical practice, he also leads the Cambridge Young Adult Hip Research Group and is Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge. The focus of his research group centres around optimisation of conservative and surgical management of femoroacetabular impingement with the help of technology. Mr. Khanduja has authored over 200 peer reviewed articles and 3 books.

Mr. Vineet Kurisunkal is a Consultant Orthopaedic Oncologist at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham, one of Europe’s foremost centres for bone and soft tissue tumour management. His clinical practice is dedicated to the treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours (sarcomas) as well as metastatic bone disease. He is highly experienced in performing complex Sacro-pelvic and extremity resections and reconstructions, including the use of advanced navigation-assisted techniques for pelvic and sacral tumour surgery.

Mr. Kurisunkal graduated with his medical degree and completed his postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery in India. He went on to pursue advanced subspecialty fellowship training in orthopaedic oncology at the world-renowned Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, one of the largest sarcoma referral centres globally, under the mentorship of Professor Ajay Puri and Professor Ashish Gulia. He subsequently refined his expertise in computer-assisted and navigation-guided tumour resections during his fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, under Professor Lee Jeys, in a program certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
