Ghulam Abbas

Mr Ghulam Abbas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a fellowship trained spinal surgeon. After completing his higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in Yorkshire, he sub-specialised in spinal surgery. Abbas did his spinal surgery training at Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield spinal units.

Alwyn Abraham

Alwyn has spent 17 years on the Trauma and Orthopaedics front line as a Consultant. The highs and lows of working in the NHS notwithstanding he remains a committed clinician, HST TPD for T&O, trainer and FRCS examiner. Clinically, he particularly enjoys the challenge of salvaging infected, traumatised, and deformed limbs in his chosen field of Limb Reconstruction. Unusually for an orthopod, he is committed to quality communication and the acceptance of human factors in medical teams. He lists an eclectic mix of influences in this regard such as Nobel Laureate, Daniel Kahneman's Masterpiece Thinking, Fast and Slow, but equally, The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey. His support of the marginalised has driven his enthusiasm for several interesting projects. This has included his advocacy of CSTs as Training Programme Director, the genesis of a Trust Foundation Doctors Programme for Internationals Medical Graduates and the creation of a Trust registrar programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics culminating in CESR. Alwyn is particularly proud of his role as the co-founder of the Leicester Gondar Orthopaedic Partnership, conceived in 2017. This is a partnership between University Hospitals of Leicester, University of Leicester, and the University of Gondar (Northern Ethiopia). Irrum Afzal

Irrum Afzal is an Imperial College London graduate and a recipient of the National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA) Director’s Award. In addition to her academic qualifications, she holds both PRINCE2 Practitioner and Foundation certifications, demonstrating strong project management expertise.

With experience spanning both the NHS and private healthcare sectors, she brings a unique blend of research and operational insight, effectively delivering and managing numerous healthcare and research projects. Irrum has supported and overseen the delivery of multiple studies in compliance with regulatory frameworks and governance requirements. Her work is underpinned by a strong commitment to Good Clinical Practice (GCP). As a Professional Member of the Research Ethics Committee for the Health Research Authority (HRA), she holds a nationally significant role in safeguarding the ethical and scientific integrity of clinical research in the UK. Drawing on her extensive experience in the practical application of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles, she provides reviews clinical and non-clinical research ethical applications involving human participants, tissues, or data ensuring that all studies are ethically and methodologically robust, and that the rights, safety, and dignity of participants are fully protected. Irrum has published in various peer-reviewed journals, frequently presents at national and international conferences, and serves as a reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal.

Irrum holds multiple positions of responsibility, including Vice Chair of Research and Innovation for the NOA, Board Member for OrthoAI (ORAIA), Research Committee Representative for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA), and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Lead for BOSTAA. She is also a Non-Executive Board Member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), and plays an active role in the Imperial College Alumni Service.

Raju Ahluwalia

Consultant Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Surgeon, King's College Hospital, London

Raju  is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Department of Orthopaedics, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London the King’s STAR Academic Group. He is a member of the Faculty of Sports Medicine of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He has received NIHR, ORUK, ECTB grants, and BOFAS & AO awards, and apartakes as a RCS Eng Mentor. His interests include limb reconstruction and joint salvage, including arthroplasty, deformity correction, and Charcot Reconstruction. Fazal Ali

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Mr Fazal Ali has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee both in adults and in children. He works at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he is helping to set up a national referral service for these problems in children. He trained in Sheffield with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He is a former Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire and is presently the Vice-President of BOSTAA ( Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association) . He is Head of the Question Writing committee of the Intercollegiate Board.

He has published his work, written chapters and given invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is recently published in Chinese. He is the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course.

Fazal was voted ‘South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year’ on five occasions. He was given a life-time award for training by the South Yorkshire training scheme in 2012. He was twice shortlisted by BOTA as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2018 he was again voted Trainer of the Year, this time by East Midlands. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner for the Intercollegiate Board in the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examinations. In 2017 he was elected to the panel of international examiners (FRCS International). Mr Ali also serves on the board of examiners in other countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training worldwide.

Abtin Alvand

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC)

Abtin Alvand is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) in Oxford. He is one of the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England based on the National Joint Registry. He graduated from University of London and completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Oxford programme. He also completed a PhD (DPhil) at the University of Oxford which was titled “Improving Surgical Learning and Performance at Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty”.

Abtin was appointed as NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook  post-CCT fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford (NOC) and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) Travelling Fellow in 2017 and also completed a fellowship focusing on peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, USA). He is a member of the Bone and Joint Infection Registry (BAJIR) steering committee as well as the Executive Committee member for the 2025 International Consensus Meeting for Prosthetic Joint Infection.  Abtin's clinical and research interests focus on peri-prosthetic joint infection and revision knee arthroplasty.

Sanjeev Anand

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Sanjeev Anand works in the specialist knee unit at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a tertiary-level practice in Soft tissue knee and knee reconstructive surgery including paediatric knees.

He is a founder member and Academic chair for the International Society for Knowledge for Surgeons on Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty (ISKSAA) and is the Executive Editor for Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery. Mr. Anand has led in developing national guidelines for ACL reconstructions. He has also contributed to the development of national guidelines for arthroscopic knee surgery and patellofemoral problems.

He is currently the Education secretary for the British Indian Orthopaedic Society and an executive member of the BOSTAA and British Patellofemoral Society.

Tony Andrade

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Berkshire Hospital

Mr Tony Andrade is a fellowship trained consultant Orthopaedic, Hip and Knee surgeon with a special interest in Hip preservation surgery and arthroscopic hip surgery.

He set up the hip preservation service at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2002 and it rapidly evolved into a tertiary referral centre. He has been at the forefront of the evolving surgical techniques in arthroscopic and other hip preservation procedures. This led to establishing a visiting surgeon program where surgeons from the UK and across the world were able to join him to learn these surgical techniques. He also then later established a hip arthroscopy fellowship program in 2016. He has also been fellowship director for a lower limb arthroplasty fellowship at the Royal Berkshire Hospital since 2004.

He is current chair of the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR) user group for the British Hip Society. This registry captures outcomes from hip preservation surgery nationally. 

He has been a member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) since it was founded in 2008, and was the 2020-21 president, of what is now known as ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society. 

Mateen Arastu

Mr Mateen Arastu is an orthopaedic and trauma consultant with special interests in complex trauma care of multiple injured patients at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire. He regularly performs complex trauma surgery, orthoplastic work, fracture non-union and revision fracture fixation and lower limb arthroplasty (primary hip and knee replacement surgery).

Mr Arastu is the education and hip fracture lead for the trauma & orthopaedic department at UHCW. He also teaches regularly as national faculty on several orthopaedic trauma courses.

Morgan Bailey

Morgan Bailey completed a paediatric orthopaedic fellowship at University Hospital Southampton. She also completed a research fellowship for the British Association for Surgery on the Knee, with a focus on patellofemoral pathology, for which she was awarded the BASK President's Award. She works between University Hospital Southampton and Portsmouth University Hospitals as part of a paediatric orthopaedic hub and spoke practice. She has a special interest in all paediatric and adolescent knee pathology and provides a paediatric acute knee service across both sites.

She is the Hampshire ambassador for the injury prevention charity Power up to Play, as well as sitting on a national working group for injury prevention. She is the Chair for the Women’s ACL Orthopaedic Steering Group. She has a passion for injury prevention in children and young women, and gender parity in the diagnosis and management of ACL injuries.

Emily Baird

Consultant in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgery, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh.

Emily Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh, with an interest in paediatric trauma, and congenital conditions of the hip and foot. She trained primarily in the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Edinburgh and Toronto.

Emily is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion in the workforce and broadening access to orthopaedics through mentorship and medical education. She is heavily involved in providing medical student education as an Undergraduate Lead, and Post Graduate Education as Training Programme Director for Orthopaedic Trainees in South East Scotland and examining for FRCS Tr & Orth.

She is the Chair of the Education Committee of The British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Faculty Member for Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons and Tutor for the MSc in Patient Safety and Human Factors.

Sunil Bajaj

Mr Bajaj completed his orthopaedic training in London (Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital South East Orthopaedic Training Programme). Mr Bajaj has written textbook chapters, some of which feature in prominent orthopaedic textbooks, such as Mercer’s textbook of Orthopaedics. He is a very keen teacher and has been invited as faculty to many popular orthopaedic training courses.

Paul Banaszkiewicz

Paul graduated from Glasgow University, completing his basic SHO surgical training in the Merseyside Deanery and then undertook specialist registrar training on the North East of Scotland training programme.  He was appointed as Hip and Knee arthroplasty surgeon at Queen Elizabeth hospital Gateshead in 2004.

He is passionate about training and medical education being a fellow of Higher Education Academy, fellow Academy of Medical Educators and has a Master’s degree in Medical Education.

He is an RCSEng member for the appointments accreditation committee (AAC) and RCSEng quality assurance and accreditation assessor for courses seeking RCSEng course accreditation. 

Paul is visiting professor at Northumbria University this role acts as an interface between the academic roles Northumbria University provides and his own clinical oriented background that provides a practical focus for research.

He has been a strong supporter of the BOA Futures Leadership Programme and the BOA annual Travelling Fellowships.  He is a keen supporter of BOTA being regularly involved with their annual instructional course and sponsor of BOTA travelling fellowships. 

Paul is the main editor and author for three FRCS (Tr&Orth) related exam books that are international best sellers and have won several BMA book awards.  He co-ordinates an annual six-day intensive FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course at Newcastle. In recent years Paul has run its international equivalent for overseas trainees with courses taking place in Dubai, India, Singapore and Jordan. 

For many years Paul was involved in humanitarian work in Northern Iraq regularly visiting the region to undertake neglected hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.  This gave him a greater appreciation and understanding of our own health care system.  Many patients would have continued to struggle due to a lack of local expertise and resources to pay for expensive surgery.

Through the contacts he has made overseas Paul is keen to develop the international profile of the BOA.

In his spare time, Paul is a keen runner, skier, gardener and Burnley FC fan.

Joanne Banks

Jo is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with specialist interests in sports knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma. She trained at Liverpool University Medical School and completed her surgical training in the Mersey region. She has also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff. She works at the Liverpool University Hospitals, a large city centre teaching hospital, MTC and tertiary referral centre.

She is passionate about education and is an Honorary Lecturer with the University of Liverpool. She is a regular faculty member on national and international courses and is the Training Programme Director and Education Director for the Mersey Orthopaedic and Trauma Training Programme. Outside of work Jo loves most sports, enjoys being out in the fells and is an avid Newcastle United fan. She is the Chief Medical Officer for British Judo, travelling with the squad to competitions all over the World. She is looking forward to being part of Team GB for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where Judo will be coming home.

Leila Benyounes

Leila is ranked as a leading barrister in Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for Inquests and Inquiries and Clinical Negligence. She represents both Claimants and Defendants which include private clients, public authorities and government departments. Leila has a special interest in coronial law and regularly acts for interested persons in high profile, media sensitive Article 2 jury inquests. Leila is appointed as an Assistant Coroner and as a Recorder in Crime and sits on a part-time basis in these roles alongside her practice as a barrister.  She has been appointed to the Attorney General’s Treasury Counsel Panel A since 2010. Reshid Berber

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Mr Reshid Berber is a hip and knee reconstructive surgeon based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.  After graduating from University College London, he undertook specialist training on the highly regarded training programmes across London, Leicester and Nottingham.  Mr Berber was awarded a PhD from University College London, for his internationally recognised research based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He has published several scientific articles and has received numerous awards for his research activities. 

On completion of training, he went on to highly regarded national and international fellowships, including a BOA travelling fellowship to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, USA. Mr Berber has a hip and knee reconstructive practice, including robotic arthroplasty and revision knee surgery. Mr Berber is a consultant member of the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network. He is also a dedicated faculty member on several national and international teaching courses.

Rahul Bhattacharyya

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals, Imperial College London

Mr Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals, Glasgow and at Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow. He is also Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He is currently member of the executive committee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).

Mr Bhattacharyya has extensive training and experience from world leading centres in the UK, USA and Canada which he now offers to his patients in the UK. His clinical interests are focused entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries with experience in treating elite level athletes. This includes meniscal repair and meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and patella stabilisation surgery. He also treats patients with arthritis with a focus on knee joint preservation wherever possible.

Mr Bhattacharyya is a keen academic. He has two higher degrees in research, having completed an MSc in orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh and an MD (Res) from Imperial College London. Here, he pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery which led to multiple academic publications and presentations. He has been nominated by the Royal College of Surgeons, England, for innovation in surgical education and for the president’s medal in teaching innovation by Imperial College London for his work in this field. He continues to work in this area in his current role as Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London collaborating nationally and internationally. He also has a keen interest in biomechanics research investigating innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation and clinical research ensuring patient outcomes are evaluated to deliver the highest standards of care. He is a keen teacher and trainer, faculty in various national courses, and involved in training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

 

Leela Biant

Leela Biant is the President of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the King James IV Professor, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is Academic Head of Dept Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Manchester, Honorary Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manchester University Hospitals an is Co-Director of the regional North West Joint Preservation Service, serving a a poulation of over 7 million patients for Cartilage Repair and Regeneration. Leela trained in London and completed specialist fellowships in Sydney and London.

She was Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Edinburgh for 8 years before moving to Manchester. Her thesis was entitled ‘Articular Cartilage Injury and Repair in the Young Adult Knee’ and her research focus includes biological regenerative surgery and advanced joint replacement. She has won multiple awards for research, and now leads a strong research team that includes academic clinicians, biomedical engineers, materials scientists and cell biologists. Leela is an elected ICRS Senior Fellow, and founded the ICRS Global patient registry. She is a Lifetime Honorary Fellow of the UK Biological Knee Society in recognition of her work in this field. She has won awards for teaching, and is a clinician advisor to NICE. She was an ABC Travelling Fellow in 2010 and BASK Travelling Fellow in 2014.

Steve Borland is a Consultant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. He specialises predominantly in orthopaedic trauma, pelvic and acetabular fractures and limb reconstruction. Deepa Bose is a consultant in orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.  Her practice is exclusively in adults, and includes general trauma, major trauma and post-traumatic limb reconstruction: osteomyelitis, malunion, non-union, limb lengthening & deformity correction.

She is currently Vice Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedics, and the lead for CESR approval process.  She has also contributed to the revision of the curriculum.  She holds an MSc in Medical Education and has been admitted to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh, as well as being a member of the Academy of Medical Educators.  She is involved in national selections for core and orthopaedic surgery, and sits on ARCP panels for both.  She was regional training programme director for core surgery in West Midlands from 2015 – 2019.

She is the Chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern UK, a specialist society of the British Orthopaedic Association, and a charity which focuses on teaching orthopaedics in low resource countries.  She is co-director of the postgraduate orthopaedic training programme in Guyana.  She also visits Gaza as part of the UK limb reconstruction team of the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.

She has been on the Emergency Response Team of UK Med, a first response team for international disaster relief, since 2012.

Lt Col Caesar qualified as a doctor in 1998 and set out to pursue a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics from his time as a junior house officer in London. He undertook basic surgical training in Edinburgh and higher surgical training in Oswestry, during which time he was BOTA President, obtained his doctorate from Imperial College, his fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, and membership of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Whilst he was on his post-CCT fellowship year training in Derby and London, he joined 256 City of London Field Hospital as a Reservist and passed out from RMAS in January 2012 before starting as a Consultant at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. He was appointed as a substantive consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital from where he deployed on Herrick 18 with 33 Field Hospital. Upon his return, he applied for a transfer of commission and returned to RMAS in 2015 before being posted to 33 Field Hospital and was posted to Brighton for his clinical placement, where he remains today. He has been deployed subsequently on Op Trenton, Op Shader and Op Pitting during this time and spent the last 6 years at 16 Medical Regiment in 127 Medical Squadron. He posted this summer to JHG SE

His interest in burnout was triggered by the foundation of the Chavasse Clinic in Brighton for Service Personnel and Veterans, and his subsequent exposure to numerous patients with PTSD, anxiety and depression, and a realisation that a similar but subtly different issue was affecting his colleagues and himself. Upon further research, he discovered the literature around burnout and moral injury in healthcare workers and has published and presented his work both nationally and internationally in this field. He has just completed work with colleagues from the Compassionate Leadership Academy and Mindalpha delivering a research driven programme, Compassion for Healthcare Workers, which has demonstrated statistically significant improvement in participants Compassion Index (CI) and statistically significant decreases in their Brighton Burnout Inventory (BBI) scores, which he co-developed, which is unique in including psychological safety as part of its analysis of burnout.

James Calder OBE

James Calder is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Fortius Clinic London and Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College. His main area of interest is the management of foot and ankle injuries in athletes. He looks after the English Premier League Clubs, many of the European football clubs, England and Irish Rugby, Indian and England cricket team and the GB Olympic teams. Donald Campbell

Donald Campbell was born in Vancouver Island, Canada and emigrated to Scotland where he spent his formative years. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1993 and trained around most of Scotland, including his Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) rotation in the East of Scotland. He completed two years of fellowships in paediatric T&O in Glasgow and Sheffield. He was appointed as a consultant in Ninewells Teaching Hospital in Dundee in 2007, where he treats a broad range of paediatric conditions with a particular interest in the foot and the ankle, including some adult F&A work. He has a keen interest in training and was the East of Scotland T&O Training Programme Director for 6 years. He is now the TPD forum chair for the UK and Ireland and a FRCS T&O examiner. Salma is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Cambridge University Hospital Trust who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow trauma, sports injuries and shoulder replacements. She is triple fellowship trained from international recognised centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, and spent a year during training at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She was awarded the BESS Travelling Fellowship. Her Trauma and Orthopaedics higher surgical training was completed in Oxford, and she studied medicine at Cambridge University. 

Salma is committed to producing the highest quality research to offer patients the best evidence-based, compassionate care. She was awarded a PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery from Oxford University, for her studies of rotator cuff failure and repair strategies to improve healing. To date she has been awarded £450,000 in research grants, including an ORUK early career research fellowship, and has published widely. She is the associate editor for Bone and Joint Journal 360, and was previously the social media editor for Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently sits on the British Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Research Committee and was previously Executive Committee member for British Orthopaedic Research Society. 

Teaching has always been important to Salma and she was the co-director of orthopaedic teaching for Oxford University undergraduate medical students for 4 years. She has taught widely on courses such as the Oxford University Orthopaedic MSC course, shoulder and elbow cadaveric courses in Cambridge and ORUK FRCS Revision courses. She has regularly lectured internationally and nationally, including teaching in China and Palestine.

Nick Clement

Mr Nick Clement is an orthopaedic consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (UK), and his clinical practice focuses on hip and knee arthroplasty.

He has been awarded a PhD for his work looking at the outcome of total knee arthroplasty, and an MD for his research defining fracture epidemiology and outcomes in elderly and super-elderly patients.

He has recently been appointed as the Clinical Lead for orthopaedics for the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland, and is Chair for research for the Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma (SCOT). In these positions he hopes to help to promote and support research projects across Scotland, and to establish national and international collaborations.

He is the author of over 350 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters, and believes that only through collaboration can true orthopaedic science progress.

His recent publications in relation to robotic assisted surgery suggest that patient outcomes following hip and knee arthroplasty may be improved with the adoption of such technology. Whether this is a cost effective intervention in the NHS is however not clear.

Jugdeep Dhesi is a consultant geriatrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Kings College London. She is currently President Elect of the BGS, (from November 2022) and will take on the role of President from November 2024.

Jugdeep’s clinical work focuses on improving outcomes for older people undergoing elective and/or emergency surgery. Her clinical interests include: hip dysplasia and young adult hip conditions, metal on metal hip replacements and rehabilitation post-hip surgery.

Holly is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer on the ‘Physical Therapy in Musculoskeletal Healthcare and Rehabilitation’ Msc at University College London. She has contributed to the writing of “Early Rehabilitation in Conflicts and Disasters Field Handbook”, commissioned by the World Health Organisation, Humanity and Inclusion and AO Foundation and in 2022 she co-authored a chapter on Hip Dysplasia in the book: HIP AND KNEE PAIN DISORDERS: Integrating manual therapy and exercise.

Having qualified as a Doctor in 1993 I have over 25 years of Orthopaedic experience. I trained in at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where I was the Senior Surgical Officer and awarded the Seddon Society Medal for research. There I trained with some of the leading hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK. My fellowship year was spent in London training in minimally invasive techniques and rapid rehabilitation.  In 2008, in Fife, we set up one of Scotland's first Enhanced Recovery Programmes. Since then we have visited several national and international centers, learning new techniques of enhanced recovery including Day Case Arthroplasty Programs. This learning culminated, in August 2018, when we performed the first Day Case Hip Replacement in Scotland. The Day Case Arthroplasty programme has gone from strength to strength and now 25% of all my Total Hip Replacements are successful Day Case discharges. The median LoS for all of my patients is one day and the average LoS <1.5 days.

From 2016 to 2020 I was Chair of the Scottish Committee of Orthopaedics and Trauma and sat on the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association. 

Since 2017 I have been the Clinical Lead for Major Trauma in South East Scotland. 

Since 2019 I have sat on the council of the British Association of Day Surgery.

Professor Lars Engebretsen

Professor Engebretsen is currently the Professor Emeritus of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Oslo University Clinic and stepped down Dec 31 2024 as Head of Medical Sciences in the International Olympic Committee. Professor Engebretsen has published over 500 articles and book chapters, with a citation index (H-index) of 118. He is among the world’s most productive in clinical, epidemiological and basic science research in the areas of general sports medicine, knee ligaments, cartilage and prevention of sports injuries and illnesses. He has received research grants and awards from many agencies and associations, including the National Institutes of Health, the Norwegian Council for Research in Science and Humanities, the Norwegian Ministry of Health, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the International Olympic Committee. He and his group have won several research awards around the world, and he was inducted into the AOSSM Hall of Fame in July 2015 and became an ESSKA Honorary member in 2016 and ISAKOS Honorary member in 2017 and EFFORT Honorary member in 2022. He received the Nordic Prize in Medicine in 2016.

Engebretsen is involved with three research groups: Knee ligaments together with May Arna Risberg in Oslo and Robert Laprade in Vail, Colorado, now in Minnesota, the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center co-chaired with professor Roald Bahr and emphasizing prevention of injuries and diseases in sports, and the Oslo Cartilage Group, which encompasses research from the cell to rehab after surgery, involving molecular biologists, pathologists, radiologists, physiotherapists and orthopedic surgeons. In 1997, the cartilage group performed the first knee joint chondrocyte transplantation in Norway. Since then, the group has had major emphasis on translational research. The group works closely with the Stem Cell group led by dr Brinchmann and has optimized chondrocyte and stem cell cultivation while at the same time developing surgical techniques for implantation. Professor Engebretsen has been the President of the Norwegian Sports Medicine Society, the Scandinavian Foundation of Sports Medicine and European Society of Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). Dr Engebretsen is or has been a board member of many other societies including, but not limited to, the Norwegian Society of Sports Medicine, the Scandinavian Foundation of Medicine & Science in Sports, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the Orthopedic Research Society and International Knee Society. He is an associate Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine (IPHP edition), former Associate Editor of Journal of Bone and Joint and on the editorial board of American Journal of Sports Medicine, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology (KSSTA), and The Knee and is a regular reviewer for all the major orthopedic and sports traumatology journals.

Alberto has been involved in LMIC activity since he worked as a Mission General Officer in Zimbabwe in 1985. He worked in Lebanon during the 2nd Camp War in the 80s and in Zambia on Fellowship before a career as an NHS Arthroplasty and Trauma Surgeon. In his NHS post he taught and helped develop both navigation and robotic knee surgery and has over 27 years experience in the field with many books and papers. Professor Xavier Griffin spearheads academic orthopaedics at QMUL and Barts Health, having joined in August 2020 as the inaugural chair of Bone & Joint Health. Xavier has been awarded over £12m of research funding and over 100 peer reviewed publications. He is a recognised research leader in the management of hip fracture and is excited to have launched the WHiTE PLATFORM study with colleagues at University of Oxford. Xavier is Chief Investigator for a number of National Institute Health Research funded clinical trials, having led 9 in the last 5 years and supported a further 5.

Xavier’s clinical expertise is orthopaedic trauma surgery specialising in pelvic and acetabular fractures. He enjoys working as part of the team at the busiest orthopaedic trauma hospital in Europe – The Royal London. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1999 before attending medical school at the University of Oxford, Xavier trained in orthopaedic surgery as a National Institute of Health Research integrated clinical academic fellow. Xavier completed a world-renowned clinical fellowship in Melbourne, Australia specialising in complex fractures of the pelvis and hip. Prior to joining Bone & Joint Health Xavier was Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital major trauma centre.

Chinmay Gupte

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Imperial College London

Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London, which encompasses St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.  Chinmay is a member of the BASK executive committee and BASK lead in research, as well as NIHR clinical research network NW London lead. He is also clinical director of the 30 yr established Wellington knee unit and CEO of Sportshealing ltd.

His main clinical interests are in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus root repairs, multiligment injuries, adolescent knee injuries, patellofemoral instability, osteochondral injuries and robotic knee unicompartmental and total knee replacement.

As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section. He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005. He has published over 100 papers in his research interests which include lateral tenodesis in ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair, MPFL reconstruction, joint fluid analysis, chondral replacement and  simulation training of knee surgeons.

His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer in 1995/6 has given Chinmay added insight into the unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice.

Enis Guryel

Shahnawaz Haleem

Zaid Hamoodi

Mr Zaid Hamoodi is a Trauma and Orthopaedics Specialty Registrar (ST8) in the Northwest (Mersey) Deanery with a specialist interest in upper limb surgery. He is a former NJR/RCSEng Research Fellow and a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester, where his research explores the predictors of failure in total elbow replacement.

He led the NJR Data Quality Audit (NJRDQA) for elbow arthroplasty alongside Professor Adam C Watts. This was a national collaborative initiative involving the NJR, BOTA, BOA, BESS, and RCSEng. This work improved the completeness and accuracy of elbow data within the registry, and involved engaging with orthopaedic trainees across the UK to drive meaningful improvements in national data quality.

James Harcus

James qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer from University of Leeds in 2002.  He began his postgraduate education and specialism in radiographic reporting and image interpretation in 2004 and completed his MSc in 2011, followed by a PgCert in musculoskeletal ultrasound in 2012.  His clinical roles in both primary and secondary care included the reporting of radiographic examinations of the MSK system, chest and abdomen as well as performing MSK ultrasound up until 2020. 

Since moving into higher education in 2012 his main role has been in leading image interpretation education for a range of health professionals, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including radiographers, physician associates, advanced nurse practitioners, and doctors.  Between 2017 and 2019 he was seconded as a clinical educator to develop and manage the UK’s first clinical academy for radiographer reporting.

James’ main research and scholarly interests are in the development of image interpretation skills and methods of education, with a particular focus on the systematic approach to image interpretation and communicating findings.  He has presented his work at both international and international conferences and has authored two books on anatomy and radiographic image interpretation of the skeletal system, the most recent being published this year and entitled Image Interpretation; bones joints and fractures.

Bilal Jamal is a trauma, foot, ankle and limb reconstruction surgeon who is based out of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow where, alongside his plastic surgical colleagues, he leads the orthoplastic service for the west of Scotland.

Ajay Malviya

Ajay Malviya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in the North-East of England and at Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital. He trained in the Northern Deanery and has done specialist fellowships in hip preservation and joint replacement surgery in Cambridge, London and Switzerland.

He specialises in periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia using a minimally invasive approach and hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement. In his routine practice, he deals with sports injuries of the hip and has published and presented widely on the results of hip arthroscopy and pelvic osteotomy in athletes and the general population. 

He has completed a PhD on the role of hip arthroscopy in femoroacetabular impingement. Preservation of the hip joint is his principal philosophy but he has a wide experience of joint replacement surgery catering to the young population, if necessary.

In his routine practice, he does more than 150 hip and knee replacements annually for all age groups. He also performs around 150 hip arthroscopies and more than 75 pelvic osteotomies for hip dysplasia annually; making him the highest volume hip preservation surgeon in the North East and amongst the top in the country.

Andrew Manktelow

Trained at the Royal Free and the RNOH, Andrew headed to the East Midlands and to Nottingham in 1999. Part of a busy trauma group for many years, his practice is now based around hip surgery. His clinical interest started in London and developed during a year in Boston, at MGH. Away from his hips, the scope of his unit has allowed Andrew a continued understanding of the issues that excite and confront other areas of orthopaedic practice.

His clinical work provides research opportunities and forms the basis of his educational activities. Andrew has travelled widely to lecture and demonstrate his practice, and he set up the Nottingham Revision Course in 2007. His recent work with the Revision Surgery Network, which provides a weekly framework for surgeons from different hospitals to meet ‘virtually’ to discuss complex cases, has received attention nationally and internationally.

Andrew has been on the Executive of the British Hip Society for a number of years and became President in March 2018. His year gave him a better appreciation of the challenges of today’s health economic environment. He saw how the BOA facilitates discussion and provides a cohesive response to support what good orthopaedics achieves for our patients.

Married to Claire, a GP and with four beautiful and tolerant daughters aged between 21 and 14, Andrew has little time to spare away from my work. When quiet he enjoys travelling, music, gardening, (watching) sport and planning future revisions.

Steve Mannion, MA MChir DTM&H DMCC FRCS (Tr & Orth) RD is Head of the Department of Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine at St George’s, University of London, combining this with a part time appointments as an NHS consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Blackpool and Preston. For up to 6 months a year he also undertakes orthopaedic education and training projects in the less developed world and has extensive experience in humanitarian surgical projects in conflict areas, including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Professor Lyndon Mason

Professor Lyndon Mason is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, specialising in major trauma and foot & ankle surgery. He trained in Wales and completed BOFAS travelling fellowships at the University of Utah and Carl Gustav Carus University in Dresden. In Liverpool, he was awarded the BOFAS Gold Fellowship.

Prof Mason is internationally recognised for his research, having won over 30 regional, national, and international awards. His work has led to several high-impact discoveries, including the identification of a new foot ligament. He was awarded the Hunterian Professorship (2020), the Robert Jones Gold Medal (2017), the EFORT Jacques Duparc Prize, and the BOFAS Chan Chen Memorial Prize on four occasions. In 2023, he received a National Clinical Impact Award for improving the safety and quality of NHS services.

He is Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool, where he leads undergraduate musculoskeletal and orthopaedic education in the School of Medicine. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (RCSEd).

Prof Mason is a respected national educator and has been invited faculty for the BOA, Royal College of Surgeons, AO, RSM, and BOFAS. He served as BOFAS Clinical Practice Committee Chair until 2025 and now leads the National Foot & Ankle Registry, having previously chaired the Outcomes Committee.

Professor Andrew McCaskie is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Interim Deputy Head of the School of Clinical Medicine (following this he will resume the role as Head of the Department of Surgery) at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant at Addenbrookes’ Hospital.

His clinical interest is lower limb, particularly hip disease in young adults. His translational research is focused on cell and regenerative therapies relating to bone and cartilage repair. This encompasses work to understand the role of cells and molecules in repair, alongside advanced imaging, related clinical trial work, precision health approaches and patient stratification.

He is Director of the Versus Arthritis Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Therapies Centre, which brings together several UK institutions and is a Principal Investigator at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute.

He is a past president of the Association of Professors of Orthopaedic Surgery and the British Orthopaedic Research Society and has served on the British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery Council of Management. Professor Andy Metcalfe

Andy Metcalfe is a Professor at Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). His clinical practice is in knee surgery including patellofemoral problems, sports surgery, osteotomy and arthroplasty.

Andy graduated from the University of Sheffield and undertook his basic and higher surgical training in Cardiff and the All-Wales rotation. He completed a PhD at Cardiff University at the Versus Arthritis Biomechanics and Bioengineering Research Centre. His fellowships were in Bristol with Mr Andrew Porteous and Mr Jonathan Eldridge and in Sydney with Dr David Wood, before starting in Coventry in 2015.

I have been a physiotherapist for over 20 years, and a clinical specialist in trauma and orthopaedics since 2008. I have completed my Orthopaedic diploma and an MSc in Musculoskeletal Science. I have worked alongside Mr Goldberg and published a systematic review on the use of mesenchymal stem cells, and more recently been part of the stakeholder group working on weight bearing terminology and the NAFF pathway.

 I am currently the Clinical Services Manager for community therapies, a challenge I sought after completing a secondment as the AHP Faculty Lead in the HIOW ICB. In these roles I have a focus on workforce and service development and have used my networks and skills to enhance the experience our patients receive.

 I am the current co- chair of the CSP South Central Regional Branch and the co-Chair and treasurer of the physio professional network, Association of Trauma and Orthopaedic Chartered Physiotherapists.

Nick is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Andrew is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee surgery.  He trained in Liverpool, and took up my consultant post in 1996, initially at a district general hospital but later moved to Liverpool University Hospitals, which has an orthopaedic department consisting of 55 consultants.  My fellowship training was with Prof Mike Wroblewski at Wrightington. Mr Phillipson's unit is the regional hub for revision surgery.  Whilst he does approximately 60 hip replacements per year, his main focus is on knee surgery.  His practice now consists of soft tissue ligament reconstruction knee surgery, osteotomy around the knee using patient specific instrumentation as well as knee arthroplasty.  Andrew introduced the Velys robot assistance system into his hospital in January 2025, and currently uses it for the majority of my primary total and unicompartmental knee replacements. When not working, Andrew enjoys cycling, climbing and skydiving.

Frédéric Picard

Mr. Frédéric Picard, MD, MSc, FRCS a.k.a Fred Picard has been Orthopaedic Consultant at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow since July 2005 and served as its Director of Orthopaedic Research for 10 years. He worked in Orthopaedic units in Grenoble, Lyon, Paris in France and Chicago, Pittsburgh in the United States of America and has been involved in Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) since its inceptions. He is member of several national and international orthopaedic societies and is past president of the CAOS UK society. He has more than 180 peer reviewed publications, more than ten book chapters, was editor of two books on Computer Assisted Technology and registered six patents.

The basic research of Dr. Picard at the University of Grenoble in the nineties have been the fundamentals for the technical constructions of the first routine CT-free knee navigation system for Total Knee Arthroplasty. On January 21, 1997, he performed the first ever knee replacement in the world with this technology.  He has been recognized as a “Lead User Developer of Radical Innovation in the Field of Medical Equipment Technology”. He is Professor Associate at the biomedical engineering department of Strathclyde University of Glasgow. Dr. Picard received multiple awards including the Muller award, the highest recognition in Computer Assisted Surgery, in 2009 in Boston, MA (USA) and the NHS 70 heroes award in Scotland.

Anand Pillai

Mr Pillai is Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with University Hospitals South Manchester, Wythenshaw with a specialist interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery, Sports Injuries of the Foot and Limb Deformity Correction. He trained in Orthopaedic and Foot surgery in the West of Scotland, and has undertaken further sub-specialist fellowships in Adelaide, South Australia and Oxford. I served with the Royal Navy for 33 years, frequently leading health care delivery in isolated and extreme locations with limited resources. I understand how education, and the effect a good mentor has on an individual, and this has continually driven me to encourage trainees of all levels to seek their potential. I have undertaken roles as Surgical Tutor, Training Programme Director at both core and higher specialty level, and as Defence Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I have undertaken several unusual leadership roles, as a Deployed Medical Director (Camp Bastian Hospital) in Afghanistan, Consultant Advisor in Trauma and Orthopaedics to the Royal Navy and as the UK Representative on the NATO COMEDS futures advisory panel. I have also sat on the National Selection Design panel for ST3 interviews which has been a challenge during the COVID pandemic for all and still interview regularly for both levels of trainee.

A member of the BOA since I was a trainee, I have sat on the Education Committee, as a Council Member and now as the Council member for BADS. I am the co-opted BADS council member from the BOA.
Since Covid Trauma and Orthopaedics has had to change, particularly with refence to in-patient stays. The huge backlog of “non urgent” MSK surgery and the limited beds available throughout the NHS has required the specialty to move forward and look at pathways to shorten hospital stays even further. As a consultant with a subspecialty of hand surgery, I have been fortunate enough to undertake most surgeries as Day cases for the last 20 years. Very few patients have had to stay overnight. Along with the multidisciplinary teams it is possible to engage further and widen the breadth of intervention that can be delivered. This is now one of my areas of interest as well as maintaining my education roles for registrar training.

Professor John Timperley

Prof. John Timperley is an experienced surgeon whose specialist practice now is focused entirely on hip replacement surgery using a tendon-sparing approach (minimally invasive SPAIRE technique) with robotic assistance.

He works in a team that helped develop a hip that is one of the most implanted types of hip replacement in the world and one of the most successful in all national Joint Registries.

John has developed an advanced surgical techniques called SPAIRE which he has used in all cases of primary hip replacement for nearly ten years.  This technique involves division (and subsequent repair) of only one small tendon (Saving Piriformis And Internus Repair Externus). The SPAIRE technique allows patients to mobilise without any post-operative restriction to their activities and to return to all activities, without restriction. Alex is actively involved in education locally, nationally and internationally. He regularly teaches and lectures in his specialist areas. Jerry is an Consultant Academic Orthopaedic Surgeon, who co-leads the RePAIR (Research in Preservation, Aging, Infection, and Regeneration) group in the Centre for Bone & Joint Health at QMUL. The RePAIR group focuses on improving musculoskeletal outcomes through targeted translational investigation into preservation of bone and muscle in ageing populations, infection, and fracture healing.

He completed both his undergraduate medical training (2009) and postgraduate surgical training (2022) in Edinburgh. During his Orthopaedic training, he was awarded an MSc Surgical Sciences (2013) and the Cutner research fellowship (2016) from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd). He received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh for his thesis on implant-related infections (2021).

He is dual-fellowship trained, having completed world-renowned Limb Reconstruction and Trauma fellowships at the Oxford Bone Infection Unit (2022) and Tygerberg Hospital, University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town (2023).

He has received research prizes from the British Limb Reconstruction Society, Scottish Committee on Orthopaedics and Trauma, Pan-Celtic Orthopaedic Societies, South African Orthopaedic Association, and Orthopaedic Research Society-International Section for Fracture Repair (ORS-ISFR). He is a dual recipient of the JIP James Medal and has been awarded travelling fellowships from the British Orthopaedic Research Society and British Limb Reconstruction Society

He is a consultant reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed microbiology and orthopaedic surgery journals, an Associate Editor for Journal of Orthopaedic Research and Frontiers in Surgery, as well as a Specialty Editor for Bone & Joint Research. He sits on the Executive Committee, as Chair for Data Analysis, for the Bone & Joint Infection Registry; Research Committee for the Bone and Joint Infection Society; and Specialist Advisor for the African Bone and Joint Infection Database Working Group. Professor Phil Turner

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon

Professor Turner has been a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport since 1990 having trained in Manchester and spent time studying in centres in America and Europe. He was the senior surgeon in the department and specialises in all aspects of knee surgery, having established a tertiary referral unit for complex knee problems from across the North West and beyond.

His clinical practice includes caring for elite athletes including Premiership football teams, professional rugby league and union players and Olympic athletes.

Professor Turner was a Council and Executive Member of The British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and was President from 2018 to 2019. He was previously the North West Orthopaedic Training Programme Director, Head of the North West School of Surgery, founding Chair of the Confederation of Post-Graduate Schools of Surgery and Chair of the BOA Training Standards and Curriculum Committee.

He has been a key member of the Joint Intercollegiate Committee for Examinations where he has been an examiner, assessor and quality assurance lead for the final examination before surgical trainees can be appointed as a consultant. He has been involved in surgical education throughout his career and was awarded the fellowship of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCS Edinburgh in 2016.

Professor Turner has been domain clinical lead in the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and founding Chair of the Greater Manchester Orthopaedic Alliance. He holds an Honorary Professorship in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Salford and was elected as a Council Member and Trustee of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2019, where he chairs the Professional Standards Committee.

Professor Michael Whitehouse

Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics, University of Bristol

Mike is a Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics at the University of Bristol. His research focuses on the treatment of osteoarthritis, outcomes of joint replacement, adverse events such as the treatment of PJI, hip fracture, open fractures and cartilage damage. He employs a wide range of research methodologies including multicentre randomised controlled trials, first-in-human trials, analysis of large routinely collected healthcare datasets, evidence synthesis, qualitative methods and health economics. He leads the NJR lot 2 contract for Statistical Analysis, Support and Associated Services and a range of NIHR funded studies investigating bearings in THR, optimisation for surgery, intra-articular injections, novel devices and treatments for cartilage damage and infection. Mike has published over 250 peer reviewed papers, 9 NJR annual reports, and obtained grant funding of £5.9 million as lead and a further £16.4 million as co-applicant. He sits on the British Orthopaedic Association and British Hip Society research committees.

Mark Wilkinson

Professor Wilkinson's principal research interests are in the genetic and metabolic aspects of joint replacement, osteoarthritis, and other associated diseases. Professor Wilkinson is a key clinical collaborator in the Genetics of Osteoarthritis initiative. He and his collaborators have been instrumental in determining our current understanding of the genetic architecture of osteoarthritis. He conducted the first genome-wide scan into hip dysplasia, and into osteolysis and heterotopic ossification after hip replacement, He published the first study in humans to show that bisphosphonates may suppress bone loss after hip replacement and the first clinical trial to show that the human monoclonal antibody denosumab can inhibit osteolysis lesion activity. Other areas of research include exploration of the molecular mechanisms that underpin osteoarthritis development and identifying potential novel pharmacological strategies for its treatment. He has worked on the genetics of osteoarthritis has uncovered novel gene associations with severity and pattern of hip and knee OA, bone remodelling responses to disease, and hip shape. He also studied the systemic health effects of metal ion exposure after hip resurfacing has demonstrated effects on bone cells, cardiovascular, and other systems.

He undertakes approximately 100 ACL reconstructions per year and a multi-ligament reconstruction every 2-3 weeks. This latter work represents one of the World’s largest experiences.

He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles: some award-winning, as well as many other publications. A study of knee motion employing weight-bearing, ‘dynamic’ MRI was awarded The Hunterian Professorship by The Royal College of Surgeons of England for 2005-2006. Current focus is on the MCL after a period of work on the anterolateral soft tissues with relevance to ACL injury, and published improved clinical outcomes in elite athletes by applying the lessons learned in the Andrew Amis lab at Imperial College. He was a lead editor of the 39th Edition of Gray’s Anatomy. A cadaveric study on ramp lesions of the medial meniscus is the 11th most cited meniscus research article per year 1976 – 2019, and another on chondral treatment techniques is 35th  most cited publication ever in orthopaedic knee research. His h-index is 46.

He sits on the Board of Directors of ISAKOS and serves on their finance and knee: sports and preservation committees. He is second vice-president of The ACL Study Group and so will be president in 2030. He sits on the Editorial Board of The American Journal of Sports Medicine, and previously the Editorial Board of The Bone and Joint Journal, as well as The ESSKA Sports Committee.  He was previously on the executive of The British Association for Surgery of The Knee. Tim Wilton

Tim Wilton trained at Oxford and at UCH medical school and in Orthopaedics at Nottingham, Harlow Wood, Derby and South Wales with travelling fellowships in N America, Strasbourg, Bern and Ljubljana. He has an entirely elective practice in lower limb arthroplasty and has specialised in knee replacement and knee revision surgery for the last 30 years.
