As a Professional Member of the Research Ethics Committee for the Health Research Authority (HRA), she holds a nationally significant role in safeguarding the ethical and scientific integrity of clinical research in the UK. Mustafa Alnaib

Dr Mustafa Alnaib is an orthopaedic surgeon, MSK doctor, digital health consultant, and software developer with a strong focus on applying AI in clinical practice. He has been involved since the first AI in Orthopaedics conference, contributing to both presentations and practical workshops. A founding member of the Orthopaedic Research & AI Association (ORAIA), he co-organised “AI in Orthopaedics” workshop in and contributed to EFORT and SICOT sessions on AI applications in orthopaedics. He develops AI-powered tools such as clinic-letter assistants, triage and research solutions apps, in addition to developing medical databases. He is an advocate for advancing work on FHIR-based data integration, governance frameworks, and clinician-led innovation in healthcare technology. 

Clinically, Dr Alnaib works as a general trauma surgeon and musculoskeletal doctor in the  NHS across London and Kent and is the founder of ACTIVATE Musculoskeletal private clinic, where he provides ultrasound-guided injection therapies and patient-focused MSK care.

Katie is a fourth-year medical student, studying at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Between her third and fourth year, she undertook an intercalated programme at King’s College London where she was awarded a First Class Honours in Anatomy, Developmental and Human Biology.

Her research interests include technological applications to orthopaedic surgery. Previously, she has researched the use of artificial intelligence in upper limb radiology and computer navigation in reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Bekim Arifaj

Dr Bekim Arifaj is a resident doctor with a strong academic foundation, a passion for innovation, and an emerging focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into orthopaedic practice and research. A graduate of King’s College London (KCL), he achieved multiple academic excellence awards during his medical training, reflecting his commitment to clinical excellence, research, and leadership in medical education. He currently works at Princess Alexandra Hospital, in Harlow.

 

Since graduating, Dr Bekim has developed a broad and dynamic portfolio that bridges clinical practice, research, teaching, and technological innovation. He has presented at numerous national and international conferences, including the ARP Sports Medicine Conference in Las Vegas, focussing on asymptomatic bradycardia in athletes. His research contributions have been published in peer-reviewed journals, and he remains actively involved in ongoing studies exploring clinical outcomes and innovations within musculoskeletal medicine and orthopaedic surgery. 

 

Beyond his clinical and academic achievements, Bekim is deeply committed to medical education. He has organised and led multiple surgical teaching programmes for both medical students and resident doctors, at local and regional levels. These initiatives have supported junior clinicians in developing essential surgical skills and clinical reasoning, often incorporating simulation and practical workshops to enhance experiential learning. He has also designed and delivered outreach programmes for schools with historically low medicine application rates, aiming to improve access to the medical profession and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Catherine Armstrong

Consultant Physiotherapist, Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust (LUHFT)

Catherine's initial qualification was a BSC Hons in Physiotherapy from University of Ulster. Following junior jobs in most specialty areas in physiotherapy, Catherine returned to University of Manchester as a Research Fellow, funded by the Humphrey Booth Trust, to complete her PhD in Electrical Muscle Strengthening. Catherine has worked as a Research Physiotherapist at LUHFT since 2002. She has specialised in Lower Limb Orthopaedics for the last 21 years. Catherine has a special interest in Arthroplasty and in particular Metal on Metal Total Hip Replacements and long-term surveillance of hip replacements. She became involved in the Arthroplasty Care Practitioners Association (ACPA) at its inaugural meeting in 2005. In 2015 she was elected onto the committee of ACPA which resulted in a number of committee roles such as Education Secretary, Vice President and finally President 2020-2022. In undertaking this role, Catherine has become involved with The BOA and the Implant Retrieval Service providing advice on behalf of the ACPA members. She was also involved in writing part of the BOA guidelines on Total Knee Replacements. As ACPA president she organised two parallel conferences alongside the BHS and BASK. As part of the lengthy process of becoming an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner, she had to prove competency in many areas of Arthroplasty care, including image interpretation. Catherine now runs a biennial image interpretation course for Health Care Professionals in Arthroplasty Care.

Richard Armstrong

Director, Registries and Real-World Evidence, NEC Software Solutions

Richard heads NEC’s Registries business.  Having worked extensively in the field of healthcare informatics, he managed delivery of national programmes associated with the collection and reporting of clinical and administrative healthcare data.  His previous roles have included Programme Director of Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and the national Patient Reported Outcomes (PROMs) service.  He is NEC’s Programme Director for both the National Joint Registry (NJR), and the European Spinal Registry (SpineTango). 

Through his work in registries, Richard has defined and developed information services for surgeons, healthcare managers, industry, regulatory authorities and patients.

Richard represents NEC on the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP) and Beyond Compliance, an initiative focused upon supporting the risk-based introduction of new devices to market.

Vipin Asopa

Consultant hip and knee surgeon, SWLEOC London

Mr. Vipin Asopa PhD FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a consultant hip and knee surgeon based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre. He has completed a PhD in Articular Cartilage Biology at the Kennedy Institute, before completing his higher orthopaedic surgical training in North West London and fellowship training at Sportsmed.SA, Adelaide and The Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has received Orthopaedic Research UK funding to investigate the optimal conditions for harvesting stem-cells from adipose tissue. Additionally, Mr. Asopa is a Python coder and primary investigator for a study titled, ‘The use of Machine Learning in the early detection of failing total hip replacements.’. This is a project that is also being supported by ORUK.

Philip Breedon

Philip Breedon is Professor of Smart Technologies at Nottingham Trent University. Philip is the NTU lead for membership of the UK-Robotics and Autonomous Systems (UKRAS) network and is a member and lead assessor for the UK’s Department of Health National Professor Philip Breedon leads the Medical Engineering Design and Robotics and Intelligent Systems Engineering Research groups at NTU. His PhD is in robotics and AI and he is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered IT professional. Helen Compton

Stakeholder Engagement Manager, NIHR coordinating Centre

Helen joined the NIHR CC in 2016 to lead on stakeholder engagement activity with the charity and MedTech communities and provide leadership and delivery across several high profile strategic and operational projects across NIHR.

Helen engages with SMEs, clinicians and charities to support MedTech innovators access the NIHR and wider life sciences ecosystem.

Helen gained an extensive background working at the science-policy interface in Defra (>9 yrs) across several high-profile government programmes. She commissioned R&D programmatic evidence that supported changes in both UK policy and international cooperation and has experience synergising research activity across government departments for domestic and international reporting. Mr Feroz Dinah is a Consultant Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgeon, currently based in the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre. Ahmed Elgebaly

Ahmed Elgebaly, MD, PhD An Aspiring Clinician Scientist Ahmed Elgebaly is a medical doctor and data scientist whose work focuses on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to address practical challenges in healthcare and clinical research. He earned his MBBCh degree from Al Azhar University in Egypt in 2018, where he developed an early interest in evidence generation and the use of quantitative methods to improve patient outcomes. Following his clinical training, Elgebaly pursued research opportunities that combined his medical background with emerging computational approaches, ultimately leading him to undertake a PhD at the University of East London. During his PhD, Elgebaly specialised in the practical implementation of artificial intelligence within sports injury research. His work examined how machine learning and predictive analytics could support the detection, assessment, and monitoring of musculoskeletal injuries. This included developing predictive models for injury risk in athletic populations and exploring AI-driven approaches to enhance clinical decision-making in sports medicine contexts. Mr Luke Farrow is a Clinical Academic and Senior Orthopaedic Trainee based in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is currently taking time out of his clinical training to undertake a CSO Funded Clinical Academic Fellowship exploring how to make improvements in the clinical care pathway for those awaiting hip and knee replacement through the use of artificial intelligence techniques.

Dr Nicholas Fuggle

Nick Fuggle is an Associate Professor at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre (MRC LEC), University of Southampton and an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at University Hospitals Southampton. He researches musculoskeletal ageing with a focus on the deployment of computer vision to predict musculoskeletal outcomes. Anisa is a medical student intercalating in a Master’s in MedTech, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at King’s College London. My name is Ali, and I’m a Core Surgical Trainee year 2 in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Basildon University Hospital. I graduated from the University of Jordan in 2021 and have been practising medicine in the UK for the past three years. I was first introduced to orthopaedics during my fifth year of medical school, and since then, it has been the only specialty I’ve wanted to pursue. I will be applying for ST3 recruitment this year, with the hope of continuing my training and building a long-term career in orthopaedics.

I’ve always had a strong passion for academia and have kept myself consistently involved in research — I’ve co-authored two papers and first-authored one. Alongside that, I’ve completed multiple audits, oral and poster presentations, all of which have helped me understand how research translates into improving patient care and surgical outcomes. Recently, I’ve developed a genuine interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and how it’s starting to shape the medical field. When ChatGPT was launched, I was fascinated by its level of reasoning and problem-solving, and it pushed me to explore how similar models could be used in orthopaedics. I’ve since completed a quality improvement project comparing management plans generated by an AI model to those actually decided in trauma meetings. I’ve also worked on a study comparing AI and human answers to examination questions. Both experiences gave me a glimpse of how AI could support clinical decision-making, but also reminded me how important human judgment and context are. As its an evolving field, efforts aimed at studying the current models and outlining the potential benefits and risks of implementing such models into practise, will greatly influence the level of involvement of  AI in the future. I think this is an area that will have a huge impact on how we work as surgeons in the near future, and I want to be involved in shaping how that transition happens. Curiosity drives everything I do — surgery, research, and learning alike. The overlap between orthopaedics and AI excites me because it brings together precision, creativity, and forward thinking.

On a personal level, I’m a big sports enthusiast — I follow and play various sports, particularly football and padel, my go-to activities to unwind and recharge. I also enjoy cooking and watching wildlife documentaries, which remind me of how diverse and fascinating life can be.

Salah Hammouche

Dr. Salah Hammouche is a orthopaedic surgeon, biomedical engineer, and clinical AI innovator whose career seamlessly integrates medicine, engineering, and artificial intelligence. Currently undertaking an ACGME-accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship at MedStar Health – Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Dr. Hammouche has performed over 3,000 orthopaedic procedures across five Level 1 trauma centers and prestigious institutions. He holds triple board certifications from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS T&O), the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (FEBOT), and the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT Dip. Peter Harris

Peter Harris is the Director of Research Science at NielsenIQ, where he leads a global team of Artificial Intelligence researchers. NielsenIQ is a multinational company dedicated to understanding consumer behaviour worldwide. In addition to his role at NielsenIQ, Peter serves as an AI consultant for the NHS, leveraging advanced AI techniques to predict medical conditions from x-rays before they are visible to the human eye. Salma is a Senior Benefit Risk Evaluation Assessor within the Musculoskeletal, Trauma and Cosmetics team at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). With over 13 years' experience of EU & UK medical device regulations, she's led investigations of orthopaedic implant outlier devices, managed manufacturer Field Safety Corrective Actions and worked with key clinical stakeholders such as the orthopaedic Expert Advisory Group to issue updated advice for people implanted with metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties. Outside of orthopaedics, Salma managed the MHRA clinical Investigation process working with other healthcare agencies to pilot and deliver streamlined review processes; enabling faster access to innovative devices, and led the Agency's investigation into BIA-ALCL, a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma associated with certain implants. Salma also spent three years at BSI conducting technical reviews and managing the conformity assessment process for clients from onboarding, to preparing recommendations for CE and UKCA certification and managing the post market activities.

Professor Mohamed Imam

Professor Mohamed A. Imam MD, MSc (Hons), D.SportMed, PhD, FRCS (Tr & Orth) is Clinical Lead for Trauma and Consultant Upper Limb & Complex Trauma Surgeon at the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Centre, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, and Professor of Digital Health and Medical Director at the Smart Health Centre, University of East London.

Dr John Jeans

Dr John Jeans is a consultant anaesthetist and a director of healthcare transformation agency 33n. He leads the NHS CLEAR (Clinically-Led workforce and Activity Redesign) Programme nationally. Following his father’s experience of care in 2013, he turned his attention to healthcare modelling and system redesign, aiming to translate data into better patient care.

Working with like-minded colleagues, Dr Jeans helped establish the National CLEAR Programme as a work-based learning initiative delivered by 33n and hosted by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. Deiary Kader

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC)

Professor Kader is  a surgeon, researcher, academic, educationalist and humanitarian. He is fellowship trained knee and a sports injury surgeon with extensive experience in knee ligament reconstruction, primary/revision knee arthroplasty, patellofemoral joint instability and multiligament reconstruction.

After finishing the specialist registrar training in Scotland and knee fellowship in Sydney/Australia and Newcastle in 2005, he was appointed as  a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at the QEH NHS trust in Gateshead and became the team doctor for Newcastle United football club. This gave him an opportunity to care for professional athletes and obtain the membership of the faculty of sport and exercise medicine in the UK. In August 2015 he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in complex knee surgery at South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) where he is now the acting director of research. Professor Kader is the current President of BOSTAA. Since 2010 professor Kader has been dedicating a significant amount of his time to humanitarian work with NGMV medical Volunteers and Life Academy (www.ngmvcharity.co.uk) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at their war wounded trauma reconstruction centre in Tripoli/Lebanon. Recently he has become the advisor and surgeon for Swisscross Foundation in Kurdistan/Iraq. His passion for research and postgraduate training has earned him a visiting professor position , since 2007, at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in Northumbria University/ Newcastle. In the past 15 years he has published more than 130 scientific papers, book chapters, articles and the co-author of two of the best-selling Postgraduate Orthopaedic books in the UK. Dr Claudia Lindner is a Senior Research Fellow and Sir Henry Dale Fellow in Translational Medical Imaging at The University of Manchester. Claudia uses methods from computer vision, machine learning and data science to develop automatic systems for analysing structures in medical images, with a particular focus on musculoskeletal applications. Mr. Palmer was a graduate of Imperial College science Technology and Medicine many years ago. He completed his medical education at Oxford , Bath and Sydney. Prof Amar Rangan holds the Mary Kinross Trust and Royal College of Surgeons Chair at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Department of Health Sciences, University of York.

Alice is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at St Mary’s University and a recognised figure in digital health and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in physiotherapy education and practice. Professor Mark Wilkinson

Professor of Orthopaedics, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Chair, NJR Research Committee

Professor Wilkinson's principal research interests are in the genetic and metabolic aspects of joint replacement, osteoarthritis, and other associated diseases. Professor Wilkinson is a key clinical collaborator in the Genetics of Osteoarthritis initiative. He and his collaborators have been instrumental in determining our current understanding of the genetic architecture of osteoarthritis. He conducted the first genome-wide scan into hip dysplasia, and into osteolysis and heterotopic ossification after hip replacement, He published the first study in humans to show that bisphosphonates may suppress bone loss after hip replacement and the first clinical trial to show that the human monoclonal antibody denosumab can inhibit osteolysis lesion activity. Other areas of research include exploration of the molecular mechanisms that underpin osteoarthritis development and identifying potential novel pharmacological strategies for its treatment. He has worked on the genetics of osteoarthritis has uncovered novel gene associations with severity and pattern of hip and knee OA, bone remodelling responses to disease, and hip shape. He also studied the systemic health effects of metal ion exposure after hip resurfacing has demonstrated effects on bone cells, cardiovascular, and other systems.
