BOA Ortho Update Course

Rajesh Nanda is a keen educationist working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospital of North Tees & Hartlepool since 2010. With Subspecialty interest in Shoulder and Elbow surgery. He is, affiliated as an Honorary Professor to the Teesside University. A member of BOA Education & Careers committee.

Has a postgraduate certificate in Clinical Education, Fellowship of Northeast Leadership Academy and completed Education Leadership programme for surgeons (RCS England). He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RCS Edinburgh. He is on the panel of Examiners for the FRCS(T&O).

Organises annual orthopaedic basic science course; shoulder and elbow symposium for physiotherapists and allied health professionals; joint injection courses for GP’s; invited faculty to Orthopaedic courses. He has been a member of BESS Education committee and a present member of BIOS education committee. Organises the MCh Orthopaedics course from Teesside University.

Rajesh is a college tutor and trainer for ST / CT trainees and offers SSC for medical students. He is involved in local and regional teaching programmes, ARCP panels and regional STC. Rajesh is the Guardian of safe working for doctors in training at his trust and he has an active research interest and is reviewer for BJJ and Shoulder & Elbow Journal.

Paul is an active member of several orthopaedic associations and societies including the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), British Hip Society (BHS) and British trauma society (BTS). He is fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow

He has a strong commitment to teaching, training and education. He is a member of the regional STC panel; fully accredited ST3+trainer; regularly attend the ARCP process for ST3+ trainees and a regular interviewer for the national appointments process at ST3 level. In addition, he is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators and have a Masters degree in Medical Education.

Paul has been an ATLS instructor for 8 years and regularly instruct on various courses both at a local and regional setting. he is also the main editor and author for three FRCS (Tr&Orth) related exam books. These are international best sellers and were highly commended at the BMA book awards in 2017.

He runs an annual 6-day intensive FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course at Northumbria University and QEH Gateshead and an annual international revision course

Paul is also a visiting professor at Northumbria University which acts as an interface between the academic roles Northumbria University provides and his own clinical oriented background that provides a practical focus for research.

Ajay Malviya joined Northumbria Healthcare as a Consultant in 2011 after completing his orthopaedic training in the North East. His area of specialty is in the treatment of disorders of the young adult hip and has helped Northumbria become a tertiary referral centre for young patients with hip disorders. He is heavily involved in training and is an examiner for FRCS T&O. He is in the BOA Education and Careers committee as the national lead of the UK and Ireland orthopaedic in training examination (UKITE).
He has an active interest in research, with many publications to his name. He is Deputy Editor of the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery (OUP) and the Chair of UK National Non Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR).

I qualified from Bristol University Medical School in 1999.

I was lucky enough to work with the Exeter Hip team and then at the Nuffield Orthopaedic centre, Oxford for my fellowship training.

During my consultant position I have developed an interest in Infected Arthroplasty management.

I have worked in Portsmouth since September 2020 having previously worked in Chichester, Western Sussex where I led the department in the QIST collaboratives.

I have been involved in education and the training of the next generation of surgeons since I started as a consultant in 2011 including the role of training programme director.

I am an active member of the British Hip Society and am currently involved in the newly formed Culture and Diversity committee as well as working groups for revision hip complexity classification and guideline development in revision procedures.

I am also regularly invited to teach on educational arthroplasty courses.

Matthew is currently a hand & wrist fellow at Wrightington Hospital. Matthew was recently appointed to the Lothian Hand Unit in Edinburgh, where he will practice solely hand and wrist surgery from 2022. Having grown up in Oxford and attended his local comprehensive school, Matthew graduated from Guy’s, King’s College & St Thomas’ Hospitals School of Medicine in 2007. He completed his orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital training programme in London and passed the FRCS (Tr&Orth) examination in 2018. Earlier this year he was awarded the Diploma of the European Board of Hand Surgery.

Matthew has held the Presidencies of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Trainees’ Committee (2015-16) and the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association (BOTA, 2018-19). He has a keen interest in surgical training and trainee wellbeing and has represented surgeons in training on the Joint Committee for Surgical Training (JCST) and the Councils of the BOA and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Currently, Matthew chairs the UK Young Hand Surgeons’ Committee for the IFSSH/FESSH London 2022 Congress. Philip Henman has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Newcastle upon Tyne since 2001. He graduated from St Andrews and Manchester Universities and roamed around the country during his training, loosely based in Dundee for specialist training in orthopaedics.

Fellowship training in children’s orthopaedics was divided between Montpellier, Metz, Paris, Adelaide and London before he finally settled to steady employment in the Northeast of England.

His consultant post has been a hybrid commitment to orthopaedic trauma care and children’s orthopaedics which come together in an interest in treating children’s musculoskeletal trauma and infections. He became involved in teaching with AOUK over ten years ago and has been active in teaching on children’s trauma in the UK and overseas since then.

Radhakant Pandey is working as a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery at University Hospitals of Leicester since 2001. His special interest is shoulder and elbow surgery, which forms most of his elective and trauma  work. He has particular interest in fractures around the shoulder and has published and presented research at various forums on this subject. He has over 40 publications and is one of the organisers of the yearly Leicester shoulder trauma symposium.

2026 – 2028 (Elected Trustee 2026 – 2028)
Professor Harvinder pal Singh is a Consultant orthopaedic surgeon at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust with a special interest in shoulder and elbow surgery. He holds an Honorary Associate Professor position at University of Leicester and has a PhD in Health Sciences. He serves as a Communications and Digital Officer in BESS Council. He is also a Surgeon Member of the BESS Journal Steering Committee for Shoulder and Elbow journal.

He is the Chief Investigator for NIHR funded DIDACT Distal Clavicle trial and is a Shoulder Panel member for the ODEP Orthopaedic Data Evaluation panel. He was part of the UK contingent which was part of the International Consensus Meeting on Infection (ICMI) 2025 Istanbul and helped formulate the International Guidelines for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of prosthetic joint infections and other orthopaedic-related infections.

As a Trustee, he will support the BOA’s work in enhancing clinical research infrastructure across trauma and orthopaedics, promoting diversity, inclusion, and sustainability within the workforce, strengthening our role in implant safety and regulatory policy and encouraging early career engagement and equitable opportunities in training.

He is passionate about improving patient care and delivering strategic impact through collaborative leadership. It is a privilege to contribute to the BOA’s future direction as a Trustee.

Fazal Ali did his MBBS in Jamaica and Orthopaedic training in Sheffield, UK with a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York. He has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee, both in adults and in children. He is a consultant at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he has helped set up a national referral service for knee problems in children which is the only service in the UK that regularly manages sporting injuries and  congenital knee disorders.

He is a former OrthopaedicTraining Programme Director (TPD) for South Yorkshire and is presently the President of BOSTAA (Britsh Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association).

He has published more than 70 scientific papers and chapters and given numerous invited lectures on training issues and knee surgery both nationally and internationally. He has edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ (Cambridge University Press) which is a best-selling orthopaedic text in its 3^rd edition and was recently published in Chinese. He is co-editing two further textbooks, ‘Postgraduate Orthopaedic Clinics’ (CRC Press), due to be released in 2026 and ‘Child and Adolescent Knee Surgery’ (Springer) which is in progress.

Fazal Ali was voted ‘Trainer of the Year’ on six occasions across 2 training rotations. As such, he was given a life-time award for training by South Yorkshire in 2014. In 2017 he was again honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation with the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

He serves as a senior examiner and assessor for the FRCS(Tr&Orth) examination. He is past-Chair of  Section 1 exam of all ten surgical specialities and sits on the JCIE and T&O Boards. He is also Chair of the International FRCS exam and serves on the board of examiners in multiple developing world countries with the view that this would help advance the standard of orthopaedic training and care in those countries.

Mr. Patil completed his orthopaedic training in the Northern deanery. He undertook orthopaedic trauma fellowships at the Royal Infirmary,Edinburgh and St. Michael's and Sunnybrook Hospitals, Toronto. His main interests include management of the multiply injured patient, peri-articular fractures, pelvic and acetabular fractures and rib fractures. He is also the MSK lead for MBChB at Warwick University.

Miss Bucknall trained in Birmingham before further graduating from the University of Dundee with honours in Orthopaedic Sciences. Following this, Miss Bucknall joined the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Programme where she completed her higher surgical training. 

Miss Bucknall went on to complete her fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Alder Hey where she joined the team as a consultant. 

During training, Miss Bucknall received a number of national prizes for research and education and was awarded the Scottish national prize for best trainee. Miss Bucknall has served as President to the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and has sat as council on the boards of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Intercollegiate Royal Colleges of Surgeons and the Joint Committee of Surgical Training. 

Miss Bucknall is avid about surgical education and delivers both international and national conferences and teaching as well as being a nationally invited guest speaker. As a member of the Selection Design Group, Miss Bucknall continues to organise national recruitment to orthopaedic training. 

Miss Bucknall has a specialist interest in paediatric hip surgery from birth to adolescence.
