JTO - September 2025
Volume 13 Issue 3
From the Executive Editor
I hope you have had a good summer, and welcome to the September issue of JTO. There are several items of news and announcements, and I would like to extend Hiro my personal welcome to the BOA Presidential Line!
In view of the proximity to the BOA Annual Congress, we have included features covering topical issues to stimulate discussion and debate. Analysis of implant retrievals is an important area of current debate. Whilst it provides a deeper understanding of the cause of failure, should all implants that are revised be retrieved and analysed? Would a more targeted approach be more logical? How could implant retrieval and analysis be resourced and delivered as a nationally coordinated service? Dominic Meek and Jonathan Phillips have led the authorship of two features in this issue. They summarise the recommendations of the BOA working group on implant retrievals and provide context by outlining how previous analyses have identified problems with implants and by covering the international perspective.
The National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) is evolving and gathering momentum. Deborah Higgs, Robert Smith and Sir Norman Williams provide an update on its current usage and future plans, highlighting the importance of wider engagement and benchmarking to improve clinical performance. One of the current themes for NHS reform is the move from analogue to digital. Catrin Morgan, Bibhas Roy, and Rajarshi Bhattacharya provide a helpful overview of Electronic Patient Records (EPR), their advantages and disadvantages, and a full tips and tricks section available online via a link in the article covering two commonly used EPR systems. Early career engagement and talent acquisition are BOA priorities, and it is great to see the evolution of BOMSA to become BOMFA including Foundation Doctors, which is outlined by Sophie Heppenstall, Nadir Nazar and Niel Kang.
I would also like to draw your attention to the features that highlight exemplars in service, education, and professional development. Matthew Gray’s feature on skillset diversity that may be gained from time out of training (TOOT), particularly in developing clinical leadership and management provides food for thought. The opportunities and potential for personal and professional development from a TOOT are worth considering. Our BOTA contribution focuses on training opportunities in the devolved nations, highlighting the positives as well as the regional challenges impacting surgical education and the trainee experience. Naomi Davis and Ros Owen report on the impactful and impressive work of the Global Clubfoot Initiative Programme. Learning from adverse events without fear of blame by confidential sharing and learning from adverse events via CORESS is being used by many colleagues but wider engagement is desirable.
The subspecialty section, guest edited by Mark Bowditch covers the current focus of NHS reform on prevention and aligns with this year’s Congress theme.
Happy reading and I hope to see you in Liverpool for the BOA Annual Congress!
