Well-organised T&O departments are fundamental to delivering safe, effective and sustainable patient care. Understanding departmental leadership structures, management responsibilities and the roles undertaken by consultant colleagues enables consultants to contribute effectively to service delivery, clinical governance and department development.

It is important that we produce evidence of our success to promote and support our practice locally and nationally. This also needs to include Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). We regard it as essential that patients are followed up and data are collected both in terms of appropriate clinical measurements and what matters to patients.

Education and training remains a central part of consultant practice. Modern postgraduate surgical education is capability-based: progression depends on demonstrated professional judgement, clinical and technical performance, and the ability to work safely with appropriate levels of supervision.
