Well-organised T&O departments are fundamental to delivering safe, effective and sustainable patient care. Understanding departmental leadership structures, management responsibilities and the roles undertaken by consultant colleagues enables consultants to contribute effectively to service delivery, clinical governance and ongoing dept development.

There have been major changes in hospital infrastructure and in clinical areas over the past two decades along with changes in ways of working. Much of this has been driven to maximise the use of beds (reducing bed numbers) and minimising patient’s time in hospital

Adequate theatre capacity for both elective and trauma orthopaedic surgery is essential. Insufficient theatre capacity and staffing for emergency and trauma cases can contribute to delays in treatment and disruption or cancellation of planned surgical activity.
